Louis Zutter gives the Swiss its first gold in the Men's Vault

Louis Zutter gives the Swiss its first gold in the Men's Vault

Gymnastics - Men's Vault - The first of what will be six gymnastics competitions Thursday, the Men's Vault featured a field that consisted of 10 Germans plus five men from four other nations. The men's vault was one of only four events in 1896 that had no Greek competitors.

Format - Each gymnast was given two minutes to perform as many vaults as he wished during that time. Little data is available for how the judges actually scored the competition.

Results - Louis Zutter of Switzerland was the top vaulter winning the gold medal, the first medal of these games for the Swiss.

Two Germans, Alfred Flatow and Hermann Weingartner placed second and third to earn the silver and bronze medals. Surprisingly the two medals are also Germany's first two medals of these games as well.

Next up: Staying with the gymnastics theme, next up is the Men;s side horse (pommeled horse).

Germany takes gold in team parallel and horizontal bar

Germany takes gold in team parallel and horizontal bar

Gymnastics - Men's team horizontal and parallel bars - The final two gymnastics competitions of the day were team events - the horizontal and parallel bars.

Format - Both bar competitions featured 10 sets of parallel and horizontal bars available to the teams. There was apparently no limit on the size of the teams, as one team exceeded 30 members (The Panellinios Grecian team in parallel). Judges scored the routines on execution, rhythm, and technical difficulty.

The parallel bar competition would see sixty-three competitors from Greece and Germany battle for the gold medal. Greece had two teams entered, one named Panellinios and Ethnikos.

In the horizontal bar competition, there was no competition as the only nation entered was a German side that was awarded the gold medal.

Results - Aside from the awarded gold medal, Germany's parallel bar team featuring gold medalist Hermann Weingärtner placed first with a dominating performance over both Greece teams.

Capturing the silver medal was team Panellinios with Ethnikos taking home bronze.

Next up: The final event of Thursday, the Men's 800 metre final.
