Does Steve know something we don't when saying the full release is coming later this month? I am assuming you meant full reveal, but I'll take a release this month if we can get it.

Re: EA Sports College Football 25 Should Only Come Out on Current-Gen Consoles

I feel like it's been almost confirmed for the last couple years that this game will be current gen. Initially, I thought it'll be cross gen, just to maximize sales. So, when it was heavily speculated that it would be current gen only, it was a surprise. You see games like TopSpin, WWE2k, and MLb the show still be cross gen. I think a game like The Show is in desperate need of a graphical overhaul.

I feel like if it was released last year, this game definitely would've been cross gen. But, with this game releasing in the middle of the console generation, it makes sense to focus on current gen. I would understand if it was cross gen. Regardless of how we feel, College Football is a niche sport. So, going current gen only is a big risk revenue wise. That shows some confidence in the game.

My question is if CFB 25 goes current gen only, does Madden follow suit. I don't see them going current gen only with EA CFB 25 and stay current gen with Madden 25. The only reason I see them do that is to maximize sales and make up for what EA CFB to bring revenue wise. I do believe it is time for these games to leave behind last gen.

My only question was if Madden 24 beta had PS4/XBX options last year.

I know Matt Brown has been mentioning for the last year or so that it will be current gen only. This seems like it was the plan all along. I don't see it as a situation where either it was it was cross gen until it was certain the console scarcity was over or a situation where there were optimization issues.

I just it was current gen all along because of the detail that was put into the game. Just with the amount of detail that has been put into stadiums and audio alone would be an issue for last gen without Last gen holding back current gen

Yeah I thought it was kind of confirmed as next gen only. It would be silly otherwise. I feel this is very common sense thinking.

Same. I thought this was confirmed from the very beginning. I also saw that for the Madden Beta test registration, it's only for the X/S, PS5, and PC.

Madden 24 beta was the same last year. So, I wouldn't out much credence to that.

I have never in any generation understood the logic of this argument. What exactly is so horrendous about allowing a lesser version to exist for (increasingly) so many people who don't bother with newer consoles? Look, just look at the percentages, the chances are extremely high this game will be decent in a quick exhibition game but an absolute mess in the details. So where is the harm in letting previous gen get a copy when this current "current gen" has the lowest adoption rate of any console generation in video game history?

I wrote the article with the point being why it should only be current-gen (and it being a good thing), and it is only confirmed for current gen right now but nothing official from EA on platforms still technically.

That's valuable development time spent dumbing down the game they're making to work on old consoles. I completely understand why they don't want to do it. Especially because they built this from the ground up. You're basically saying that they should develop two entirely different games. It's different when it's MLB The Show, and they developed for that console already and have an existing base for which to build that version of the game on. This isn't just built on Madden. From everything we've heard it's ground up, yeah same engine as Madden and all their sports titles, but ground up. Brand new. Developed specifically for this generation of consoles, which has been current now for almost 4 years. As a consumer who has managed to upgrade in that very long time frame, I don't want this game being dumbed down to compensate for old gen. I want brand spanking new. I want high end graphics, current gen physics, 4K, 60 FPS, all of that. If they built this from the ground up with both gens in mind, the current gen would suffer for the expense of the 4 year old gen.

I think it's just the idea of current gen being held back by last gen. The argument isn't not allowing those who either can't afford or don't want to upgrade. The argument is more current gen not reaching its full potential because you have to make sure it can be optimized or just allocating resources to last gen in general. It's easy to see NBA 2k last gen and next gen aren't the same game, but that's still allocating resources to last gen

I want to add that I'm one of those folks still in the last gen. I understand I am not the target audience here.

I honestly never adopted the current generation consoles because graphics are not my selling point. I want great gameplay, innovation in storytelling and game mechanics, etc. I feel Nintendo subscribes to this concept, hence lower fidelity consoles with massively fun games.

I don't feel like aesthetics - jersey mesh being 10% more realistic or having sweat beads on an arm - are more important than a busted game engine, bugs, or gameplay that has not innovated in decades.

That being said... NCAA 25 puts me in a predicament where I would potentially enterain a console (ideally a PC) IF the gameplay is better than the Madden brand, which I can not stand.

Speaking on MLB the Show, that's game that I enjoy. But, I can't say that there has been a big graphical leap from even the PS3 era. I think the decision becomes do we want to maximize sales or maximize the scale of the game. While current gen sports games have been solid, overall its been disappointing.

It would make a ton of sense for this game to be cross gen. This is the first release in 11 years and this is a niche sport. It would've been justified to make this game cross gen to maximize revenue. If this game is current gen, they are either banking on the demand to be there or have plans on making microtransactions an emphasis. But, the beauty of this game is that it doesn't NEED to be a flagship title or to be a top seller. This isn't a situation like MLB the Show, WWE2K, or TopSpin that you want them to bring in a ton a revenue. EA Sports make a ton off of Madden and EA FC, so they just need EA CFB bring in a 3rd of Madden's revenue.
