    Your Offensive Strategy

Just wanted to get a feel of how fellow OSers execute offensively in 2k10.

For me, I like to run set plays only off made baskets. I feel I have more time to think about what set I would like to run and select it quickly. Because the play calling in 2k10 can be slow depending on the play called and how your team is spaced on the floor, this helps me avoid playing late in the clock a lot; which was the case when I was running plays on almost every possession.

Off misses I like to obviously first look for an opportunity to score quickly in transition. If nothing is there and I have a big man trailing the play, I like to call for a quick pick for the ballhandler in hopes to break down the D before it gets completely set.

I also make sure to see if any mismatches were created in transition and look to exploit them, be it in the post or on the perimeter.

Lastly, if I'm forced to work in the half-court off a miss, I like to look for shooters coming off screens, run PnR's and PnP's, and look for my post players.

I know this is all basically Basketball 101 but just thought I'd share.

There is a big misconception about how running plays is "sim" when in reality most NBA teams don't run set plays every time down the floor. In fact I'd go far enough to say it its almost a rarity unless its out of bounds after a timeout.

That being said very rarely do I run plays. I run a pick and roll/pop game, with a dribble drive offense to collapse the defense and stretch the defense on kick outs, or attack the rim.

I usually set my coach profiles to something close to:

    75-80 offensive tempo
    60-70 defensive pressure
    65-70 fast break
    70-80 crash boards
    50 help defense

Most teams run plays or sets it's just most of the plays in 2k aren't realistic.

Where is a horns set for example? (Most NBA teams run this where the 4 and 5 are at the pinch posts ready to set screens for the ball handler)

Plays involving stagger or double screens on the ball?

Off ball movement by your teammates also needs to improve quite a bit.

I also wish that you could run double and staggered screens. Every once inawhile ill call for a quick screen and another player will be coming to set a screen at the time but its rare.

I like to run a lot of 1-4 sets. Once in a while I'll dip my finger into the triangle. But for the most part I stick to the 1-4. Also I like to drop my crash boards to pretty much zero to start the game. I care about defense more. I like to selective run or push the ball. I mix it up so much on the fast break. From 3's to pull med range jumpers to layups....But my favorite thing to use is the give and go. My opponets really don't know whats coming next. Even when I play the CPU...it second quesses itself on fast breaks.

For example, I might have a 3 on 1 break. And I will lead pass my shooting to the 3 point line. Use the give and go feature. And if the CPU comes out to contest the shot. I quickly press X to get the ball back to the passer for the easy layup. Next possession I will must likely pull up for a med range jumper. Because most opponets think I will be throwing alley oop or pass for a layup.

            Re: Your Offensive Strategy

Depending on what team I'm using, I try to mimic their offensive strategies. If I use Phoenix, I sometimes push it to look for easier opportunities for the offense. Off of made baskets, if I don't push it, I set up Nash and Amare on the screen roll most of the time to get some opportunities there.

If I use a team like Orlando, I often, but not always, push it off of defensive rebounds to find the transition three. If in the halfcourt, I try to run the screen and roll to either open up shooters or get Dwight good post position.

If using just a basic offense, I like to go mostly freelance. If the "Run Plays" slider actually worked, I'd turn that on Auto, but it runs plays every damn time down the court.

I also like to try to play a style that reflects the way teams/players play in real life....

When I use Boston I try to get KG on a smaller defender so he can bully him and push him around, but do nothing against a guy his size..

With Orlando, I try to get Dwight in foul trouble as fast as possible.

And when using the Cavs, I try to choke by losing as many games as possible to opponents that I should beat, especially in the playoffs....

              =)

No but seriously, I like to take what the defense gives me early, and not try to force anything at any point of the game. I take 3's when they're there, and make sure I don't switch players on defense until the cpu crosses half court so that I don't make any switching mistakes that are not my fault because I can't see the whole floor. Cpu will take advantage of that every time with a lane left open to attack the basket, or a wide open three.

Typically, I usually play run and gun, but I will run plays if I'm going for the final shot in the quarter/half or if I just need to slow the pace down a little.

                    Re: Your Offensive Strategy

With the Celtics, I like to do lots of pick and rolls with Garnett, catch and shoot deep jumpers with allen (usually after penetrating with Rondo or getting a doubleteam on Pierce or Garnett). With Pierce, I like to take mid range jumpers and get pump fakes to get the defenders in the air. Perkins gets most of his points off of doubleteams on KG and offensive rebounds. Rajon Rondo doesn't score much, but if I see that he is matched up on a poor defensive point guard (like Steve Nash, the last game I played) I will call for isolation and have Rondo get a one on one layup. If I see that Pierce or Garnett has a size advantage, such as a two guard on Pierce or a small forward on Garnett, I generally force the ball down low and use post movies.

With my bench is in, the game is a lot differently. With Robinson, I like to give it to a wing player and pop back outside for a (hopefully) open jumper. Tony Allen is the beneficiary of my second units faster play, getting lots of fast break points and driving to the hoop. Wallace is very good at taking quick jumpshots before the defense has set up, and for some reason Glen Davis is hard to stop with mid-range jumpers (which is unrealistic, because in real life he has poor touch, in this game he seems to make way too many).

whats the deal with people taking alot of transition 3 pointers? people want to attack the basket in halfcourt but throw up a 3pointer with an open lane????

I don't mean in situations like 3 on 1, 2 on 1. I take those to the rim. But I mean transition as in where the defense hasn't set and there may be a trailer or someone spotting up at the three point line with defense still in the back court. Magic do this alot and I try to emulate it in the game but I don't do this with every team.

Attck the rim to see what the defense is playin, then in 2nd quarter start running sets

In my current Knicks Association, I have Carlos Boozer & Mike Miller as my starters(along with Lee, Chandler & Douglas). I don't like D'Antoni's style at all - I play a traditional, half-court/inside-out game with Booz & Miller(or Douglas). Carlos is a beast inside, and Miller has a sweet release. Chandler's my slasher. I use my bench the same - inside with Darko/Curry, outside with Gallo, Sergio & J.R. Giddens. Giddens is a great slasher too, with some sick dunks

I play w the spurs and play a slow pace, but in transition i do like to hit a spot up shooter in transition for 3 if its open.

I have plays set to auto but i have a bunch of realistic plays set up in my playbook so i usually wind up w screen amd roll plays or post plays w duncan.
