Pound The Rock - The San Antonio Spurs

The Stonecutter's Credo

When nothing seems to help, I go and look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before.

-Jacob Riis

I play a lot of offline 2K every year, and this year I have decided to play a MyLeague and post updates on OS.

I only ever play as one team in 2K - my beloved Spurs. I was born and raised in San Antonio (although I call Dallas home now) and I'm a lifelong Spurs fan.

At 42 years old, I've watched the Spurs through a number of eras – the end of Gervin's career, the excitement and disappointment of David Robinson, the Tim Duncan dynasty, the Kawhi saga and now this- rebuilding around DeRozan and Aldridge.

Over the years I have been to a ton of games, regular season, playoffs and a number of Finals games. So I consider myself an expert on this team, and I'm excited to get started with my interpretation of the Spurs story going forward.

My primary focus for 2018-19 is to begin picking up the pieces after the Kawhi trade and rebuild the team into a championship contender. That means evaluating players, building an offense and defense around the talent we have, and developing the young guys. I want to mix elements of the Spurs tradition while adapting to this era of pace-and-space and super teams. Based on my feel for the roster, I will probably make a realistic trade after 20 or 30 games.

Welcome to the thread! Any and all comments, questions, etc. are welcome!

Settings

Platform: PC/Steam version
Difficulty: All Star default
Season Length: 82 games
Quarter Length: 12 minutes
My League Settings: Barnsey's MyLeague Sliders
ACE: ON
Roster: I used the early January update, for the playbook and ratings updates, and rolled all the transactions back to Opening Night. I plan to make the trades that have been made since then, but I reserve the right to exercise a little artistic license.
30 Team Control: ON, so I can keep trades/signings/drafts as realistic as possible

NOTE: I plan to play every game. So when you see recaps, highlights, etc., that's a game I played, unless otherwise noted. Even in "unimportant" games, I can use those as a lab to try new players, new plays, new defensive schemes, etc.

Coltrane's 2018-2019 NBA Preview

Rather than break down the conferences or do a ranking, I decided to focus on tiers of teams. I’m going to cover all 30 teams and provide a brief summary of where I think each team stands as we enter the regular season. I may update these rankings in a mid-season or end-of-season report, let’s just see how it goes.

The Cellar-Dwellers
These teams aren’t just bad. They have seriously stripped down rosters that are built not just to be in the lottery, but to win it. Heaven help the fans of these moribund franchises.

Spoiler

Praying for Ping Pong Balls
Yes, I know the Lottery doesn’t use ping-pong balls anymore, but some of these rosters may be better suited for competitive ping pong than for NBA basketball.

Spoiler

First Round Fodder
These teams will make the dance, but shouldn't get too comfortable. They'll be headed home before any of the slow numbers are played.

Spoiler

The Noise Makers
These teams are virtually locks for the postseason, and if things break correctly could win 2 rounds.

Spoiler

The 2nd Tier
In any other year these guys would be a threat to win the title. But this year, they're all fighting for the silver medal.

Spoiler

The Champs
These guys aren't playing for a Larry O'Brien trophy, they're playing for a place in the record books as the best team of all time.

Game 1: Timberwolves at Spurs

SAN ANTONIO
– DeMar DeRozan made his debut in Silver and Black and got the Spurs off to a winning start with a 99-92 win at the AT&T Center. DeRozan scored 30 points for San Antonio, who were down 10 early. “After 9 years, it felt a little strange wearing another uniform, but the fans were fantastic. I'm looking forward to the next phase of my career here.” The Spurs overcame an off night from LaMarcus Aldridge, who struggled scoring against Karl-Anthony Towns all night and finished just 4-11 from the field for 9 points and 10 rebounds. KAT lead the team with 22 points and 20 rebounds, and Andrew Wiggins chipped in another 20 for the Wolves, who were without the services of Jimmy Butler, who has demanded a trade from the team.

Up Next:The Spurs travel to Portland to take on Damian Lillard and the Trailblazers.

ARTISTIC LICENSE ALERT: Because I wanted to start from the beginning, I have uninjured DeJounte Murray and he is starting in my backcourt with Derrick White. For my own enjoyment, I didn't want Murray sitting out a year with an ACL tear that occurred in the preseason.

Game 2: Spurs at Blazers

PORTLAND– San Antonio beat the Blazers 111-109 in a thrilling game at the Moda Center that went down to the buzzer. Damian Lillard scored 14 of his 33 points in the 4th quarter but saw his 3 at the buzzer hit back iron. DeJounte Murray and Derrick White provided stellar defense, including a late steal by Murray on Lillard that lead to a dunk by White, giving the Spurs a 109-105 lead with 1:07 left. DeMar DeRozan lead the Spurs with 30 points, his second consecutive 30 point game for the Spurs. Patty Mills added 18 off the bench.

Up Next:The Spurs take on LeBron James and the LA Lakers at Staples Center.

Breaking News: Jimmy Butler traded to Philadelphia for Covington, Saric

The Minnesota Timberwolves have reached an agreement to trade disgruntled All-Star forward Jimmy Butler to the Philadelphia 76ers, league sources told ESPN.

The 76ers are trading forwards Robert Covington and Dario Saric, guard Jerryd Bayless, and a 2022 second-round pick for Butler and forward Justin Patton, sources said.

The 76ers hope to agree to a long-term deal with Butler this summer. They would be able to offer Butler a five-year max contract worth $190 million, while other teams could offer four years and a projected $141 million.
