Formation Subs: How will you utilize it?

There are many new features this year for NCAA 11, but I think the one thing that is going to make one of the biggest impacts throughout the life of the game is the inclusion of Formation Subs.

Some fear that it will be exploited to the point of cheating. But is that really possible?

It's like saying that the forward pass is "cheese" if the forward pass was a feature that was just added to video games. It's a part of the real life game and just because it's new to the video game, doesn't make it an instant exploit. It's just not understood completely.

While many will see this as cheating, it's actually real football. The equalizer for the defense is the new feature that tells you the personnel after the offense has selected its play. You'll know if there are three QBs on the field.

It's what teams do in real life and there's no reason to think it's cheating. Of course, if there is a way to exploit it, someone will find a way.

The game of football, like any game, hinges on the ebb and flow of adjustments made by both teams. Using the example of a personnel group with multiple QBs on the field; key on the pass and call your best pass defense.

It will be absolutely essential that most everyone learns how to utilize formation subs, how to defend against certain personnel packages, or learn how to complain when the guy you're playing is actually beating you by playing better football.

Some of us have some good ideas of how to use formation subs; some with playing and coaching experience in the real world, and some who are just creative minds.

We all could stand to add a weapon or two to our gaming repertoire, that and I want to know what I'm up against if I ever face any of you online

Re: Formation Subs: How will you utilize it?

I'll use it mostly for HB's if I have two HB's that are rated about the same. I'll put my power HB in on I-formation and my speed back in for some Shotgun- single back formations. If I have a clear cut starter at HB I will just pick out a few formations and put the backup in so that way I can easly give my starting HB a rest.

For WR I won't use it as much, but If I have a young player I wanna get some playing time I'll stick him into a few of the formations.

Like Brandon Smith for UGA played some off last year and is the fastest player on the team. I will add him into some diffrent formations/trick plays to take advantage of him.

For QB's If I have a backup QB thats fast like I do this year I will add him into a formation for a options.

I may also pick out one whole formation I dont use much and put in all my backup skill players.

I think that the main formation sub that I will do is replace the WR that is involved in the WR option play with my fastest WR.

Get freshman playing time if I promise them it...

Bring in impact defenders on offense (CB's with speed and good catch/carry ability i.e. Greg Reid, Lemarcus Joyner).

I can't wait to mess around with the game!

I will be using it a lot on defense for my pass rushing/defense formations. Putting my pass rushers on the line for 3rd and longs, and coverage guys over the middle and in the secondary.

For offense, mainly with Tight Ends and Wide Receivers. Put my pass catching tight ends in sets I am going to pass out of mainly, and put my run blocking Tight Ends in formations where I am going to be pounding the ball. It's also nice to put your possession receivers in the Slot.

Re: Formation Subs: How will you utilize it?

Yes I know am cheesy....but if possible I am planning on doing the following for formation subs....

Putting my QB in at punter on Max Protect Punt Pass

Fast running back or reciver in at full back on direct snap fake punts.

Also, will probably put my QB as a WR on WR Double Passes that aren't already in the wild cat formation.

I'll also put my starting QB in on Fake Pass Field Goals...

I will also put a fast WR at Tight End on some formations that use slant routes

Sometimes on HB Pass, I may put my backup QB as my running back, or fix the depth chart so that I can bring my backup QB in as my HB on some plays (I did this every once in awhile in NCAA 10)

In NCAA 10, I would sometimes run a 3 QB system by doing the follwing...Hopefully the formation subs make this easier...Here's what I had to do in NCAA 10 to make it work...

            From the Wild Cat formation...
            1) Leave your 1st string QB where he is.
2)Put your 2nd string QB as your starter at HB
3)Put your 3rd string QB as your 2nd WR
In Wildcat do the Package:QB(this way the other guy dosen't know it's Wildcat formation)
4)Make sure your real starting HB is your 2nd string HB for when you need real running plays.

Re: Formation Subs: How will you utilize it?

I love playing defense, so I'm going to have a ball mixing things up on that side of the ball like never before. I'm going have a pass rush package of 4 DE's. I'm going to find what my guys do well and take advantage. If I have a young guy who's got 90 PMV, but doesn't have the overall to be a starter, then he's my pass rush specialist. If I have a multi-skilled LB, I'll drop him to DE similiar to how the Ravens used Peter Boulware. If I have a DT that's multi-skilled, then I'll create packages that move him up and down the line to create mismatches.

I love the control that NCAA is giving this year.

Re: Formation Subs: How will you utilize it?

I'll finally be able to sub in those 2nd and 3rd string guys on kickoff coverage and kick returns. It's been frustrating seeing my starting WR on kick coverage or O lineman on kick returns.

Special teams is definitely where it will be at. I will be able to get my backups plenty of "experience" through the kickoff and kickoff return teams. That way too, I don't have my starting WR's out there making tackles. Other than that, it will be something situational when I am trying to get good players in different places.

I'm gonna use it to put Travis Benjamin in the slot in 3 WR formations and have him out wide in 2 WR formations, also to put Allen Bailey at tackle in the nickle, and I'm gonna put all Miami Northwestern players in a formation.

For Florida imma gonna have a package for the incoming freshmen Qb who is almost a 90 on speed with pretty good acc. I'm gonna put him for runs an toss some passes in there to keep the Defense honest. I heard Meyer is gonna do this in real life... Should be fun

I wasn't aware that Special Teams (kick off/return) was available as well. Can anyone confirm this?

If so, that's huge, because in real life this is when the backups and freshmen get experience. Even guys that are redshirting can be on special teams and it won't count against their RS (in real life).

I'm not sure there has been any confirmation on it, but this was always available in last gen, so I guess we are assuming. It would be ridiculous if it were not an option.

I'm pretty sure that even if you play on special teams, it does count against your RS.
