Fresno State to Accept Invitation to the MWC

" 3:56 p.m.: Fresno State will announce this evening that it has accepted an invitation to join the Mountain West Conference, sources with knowledge of the situation told The Bee this afternoon.

Fresno State's decision is independent of whether BYU leaves the Mountain West Conference. A source said that BYU is considering playing football as an independent because the Mountain West would not commit to the school over the next five seasons, while also granting the school the right to leave at any time for better opportunities."

Time to run with the bigger boys!

Fresno State is a solid program who isn't afraid to play anyone. Them going to the MWC might convince Boise St to stay there.

In related news, the MWC has also extended an invite to Nevada who is also expected to accept. The WAC could be doomed.

The Mountain West Conference announced on Wednesday it has invited Fresno State and Nevada of the Western Athletic Conference to leave the WAC for the MWC. The Mountain West is losing Utah -- and possibly BYU -- next season but gaining Boise State, another WAC school.

The MWC announcement came minutes after league member BYU acknowledged reports it could be going independent in football and joining the WAC in all other sports. The BYU statement stopped well short of confirming any of the reports, saying only that the school will explore its options.

The Fresno Bee and Reno Gazette-Journal are reporting Fresno State and Nevada, respectively, will leave the WAC for the MVC. Both plan announcements for later Wednesday night.

Wow.....who's left in the WAC now? Utah State, San Jose State, LaTech, Hawaii, and New Mexico State? Really only two of those schools should even be in FBS and even that is a stretch. I'd imagine Hawaii would want into the MWC now too.

So much for conference realignment being over...

These are interesting developments and I guess the MWC's attempt for a BCS bid just went up in smoke with BYU's departure, although Fresno St. is still a solid pickup in a very good recruiting area, so they may have potential in the MWC.

Now the MWC has Fresno State and Nevada. Hopefully Boise State stays with the MWC to help make for a larger BCS bid!

You mean BYU instead of Boise? Keeping them in the MWC would definitely increase the chance of an auto-BCS-bid.

This is my hope.

If the Mountain West can field

BYU
TCU
Air Force
Boise St.
Fresno State
Nevada

and bring in just one more decent football program I'd think people would be hard pressed to keep the conference out of the BCS. Maybe BYU wouldn't need it's independence.

Guess the next few months will tell a lot about what the 2011 college landscape is going to look like.

I hope the MWC can get stronger (now that my dogs are a member) instead of getting weaker.

Yeah I forgot about BYU hopefully they stay. Boise still has a choice to stay or go back to the WAC with no penalties. So now that MWC got confirmations from Fresno and Nevada, Boise should stay with the MWC.

Very possible. They said they were going to look into inviting up a few FCS school in the next couple years. No idea who else they'd invite up though.

Wow, Boise has went from crushing defeat yesterday to feeling like things might be ok today. I wouldn't hold my breath for a MWC BCS bid, just due to money (though if BYU stays I think the league is probably better than the Big East). The WAC should just fold imo, inviting up FCS teams that will struggle to meet the FBS requirements seems like prolonging the inevitable.
