VT Hokies 2011 Roster as Case Study on How Closely Video Game Players Match Real Ones

BELOW IS MY REVISED VERSION OF MY WORK AS OF 6/4/2011<O</O
    <O> </O>
In order to help me answer a question I raised in anther thread about a month or so ago regarding how closely players and teams in the EA Sports NCAA football video games resemble actual college players and teams, I have derived my own overall player ratings for the Virginia Tech Hokies 2011 roster and researched the team's depth chart. I have followed the team closely for many years. I have also followed this season’s spring ball as closely as one could from a distance. My depth chart does not reflect the final spring depth chart. I have instead produced a depth chart as it should be when the season starts, all those players who have been injured and missed all or part of spring ball return and players move back to their usual positions. When the game is released in July I will compare the roster, depth chart and overall player ratings that are found on the DVD-ROM to my own and post my conclusions. I will also look at some ratings other than the overall ratings, study jersey numbers, heights, weights, races, and home states and post these findings as well. It will be interesting to see whether the game reflects the final spring depth chart or the projected depth chart that should be in place when the team plays its first game of the season. I predict that in the end the video game version of the team will be far less a match for the actual team than most would suspect. I think this will be especially true as one goes further down the depth chart. The closer my predictions are to what the real players deserve in as far as overall ratings the more meaningful this case study will be. I therefore encourage all those interested to post differing opinions on player’s overall ratings. The “*” indicates a player who should not be included on a realistic 68-man roster. I have accounted for 94 players. All players who could possibly be included in the game are covered here.<O></O>

    The team still has a B+ Offense, a B+ Defense and is a B+ overall.<O</O

why does it matter any? We ALL KNOW it's good ole HB #x, who just happens to look and have pretty much the same attributes as Joe Everyplayer, who happens to play HB for the Wildcats. Just give it a rest dude. I don't see what you are trying to prove.

I saw one poll that had them at 18th in the nation. A team ranked 18th should have around a B+ Offense, a B+ Defense and be a B+ overall.<O</O

I am not trying to prove anything. I am trying to determine something for the sake of my own curiosity. Since I am not the only one who is interested in such things I have started this thread. If you are not curious about something that I am curious about then it is simply a case of to each his own. Maybe when it comes to attacking threads started by others you should give it a rest.<O</O

Can I take your post to mean that you think I am going to get EA Sports in trouble? DO I REALLY HAVE TO EXPLAIN THIS ISSUE AGAIN?

A month or so ago? Pretty sure you talked about this only a week ago in the other topic. And we all know QB #12 on Miami is supposed to resemble Jacory Harris.

I get the impression that you have no idea what you are talking about.

I'm not sure where you got these ratings from, but wherever they came from obviously doesn't know that the Hokies' top three receivers are Jarret Boykin, Danny Coale, and Dyrell Roberts. A person who has been following the team for many years should know that. Marcus Davis did play in all fourteen games and he did catch passes for 239 yards last season, but that's hardly enough to warrant an equal rating to and a starting spot over senior Danny Coale, who more than tripled that yardage output in 2010 with 732 yards receiving. Davis wasn't really a hot-shot recruit either, rated as a 3* athlete by Rivals, and he was converted from quarterback to wide receiver shortly after he arrived in Blacksburg.

Not sure how you decided that the Hokies' offense and defense will be on par with each other this season given that the Hokies offense has to replace its best three players from last season - QB Tyrod Taylor, RB Ryan Williams, and RB Darren Evans. Junior David Wilson is good, but there's nothing proven behind him. Josh Oglesby will get the first crack at reserve tailback, but he spent all of last season playing fullback.

Moving on, a person who has been following the team for many years should also know that Danny Coale is absolutely NOT the punter and isn't even listed amongst any of the Hokies specialists. He's strictly a wide receiver. There is no other player with the last name "Coale" on the Hokies.

Further, I have no idea where you got Lorenzo Williams from at SS, he isn't listed on the two-deep in the Hokies' spring media guide and hasn't recorded a single tackle for Tech in his career. The reserve rover should be Wiley Brown, who appeared in eight games last season.

I have other issues with the ratings, in particular I want to know how on earth a redshirt sophomore quarterback with all of 106 passing yards to his credit gets an OVR rating of 86 (QB Logan Thomas) and in general the generosity with ratings for other players who lack true gameday experience. Ratings are more subjective admittedly, but I digress.

Basically, the cynic in me simply thinks you took the Virginia Tech team in NCAA 11, advanced a season in dynasty, thus removing the seniors and Ryan Williams, and went from there for this "projection".

I have no idea what the point of this exercise altogether is. "Post your conclusions"... what are you even looking for? Why is this thing you are doing of any interest to anyone?

Using the information you have stated, these are my conclusions:

                        What?

I'm sorry, but I'm honestly not sure how this is supposed to prove anything. Also, if you noticed, there's a red thread on how the Player's lawsuits against EA were just shut down.

However, if for some reason your ratings are perfectly exact to the ones EA made, I'll put my foot in my mouth....

                        Baseball: Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs
                        Hockey: Allentown Phantoms
NCAA: The College of William and Mary Tribe

Why is this thing you are doing of any interest to anyone?
actually he's right on in some areas. davis ended the spring tied @ #1 on the depth chart with coale & coale is the #1 punter at this point- they are obviously waiting for one of the young punters to step up, but if no one does, coale will be punting. and oglesby was the #2 tailback his first two seasons, but was moved to fb/h-back last year to get him on the field more, so it's not like he's never run tailback. to the op- the roster on the game will look nothing like this for two reasons. #1- your apparent fandom has grossly overrated VT (cody journell an 88! really bro?!?) #2- you didn't take in account true freshmen, so at least 10-12 of the players you listed won't be on the game b/c of new recuits like lockhart, marshall, jarrett, and harley et al will be.

Dyrell Roberts has been struggling in coming back from a compartment syndrome he suffered last season in the Georgia Tech game. He did not participate in spring practices at all.

Marcus Davis led all receivers with six catches for 61 yards and two touchdowns in the Maroon-White game. He caught 23 passes for 297 yards and four touchdowns combined in the Hokies’ scrimmages and the Maroon-White game. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Davis has taken Roberts' spot come this fall.

Danny Coale led all punters with 3 punts for an average of 44.0 yards with a long of 53 yards in the Maroon-White game. His average would have been better if not for having to rush one due to an unblocked defender coming through the line. The punt was a low line drive that Jayron Hosley ended up running back for a touchdown. Without a doubt Coale looked better than any of the other punters during the Maroon-White game.

I really do hope the prediction of GW starting at LOLB is wrong. Would love to see Nick Drew or someone step up and take that spot.

Thanks for the clarification, though I didn't expect at all for a wide receiver to be playing punter, lol.

I didn't even realize about the true freshmen missing.
