    LSU Dismisses Tyrann Mathieu

LSU has dismissed Heisman Trophy finalist Tyrann Mathieu from its football program for violating school and team rules.

BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU has dismissed Heisman Trophy finalist Tyrann Mathieu from its football program for violating school and team rules.

"We extended ourselves personally and professionally to him," LSU coach Les Miles said at a news conference Friday. "He has really improved and has a chance to take some steps as a person.

"We extended ourself to the full length of the policy."

Miles would not specify the reason Mathieu was kicked off the team.

"We'll miss the guy," Miles said. "The football team's got to go on. We'll have to fill the void."

A source told ESPN's Joe Schad on Friday that Mathieu has been looking for a new school to play for this season.

Last season Mathieu was a finalist for the Heisman and won the Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation's best defensive player.

The junior defensive back nicknamed Honey Badger was the surprising Heisman Trophy candidate last season as the Tigers won the Southeastern Conference championship and reached the BCS title game. LSU lost the championship 21-0 to Alabama.

LSU enters this season ranked No. 1 in the coaches' poll. The AP college football poll will be released Aug. 18. The Tigers opened preseason camp last week as one of the favorites to reach the national championship game again.

Mathieu was the team's big-play machine at cornerback and on special teams. The All-American scored four touchdowns -- two on punt returns and two on fumble returns -- intercepted two passes and caused six fumbles and recovered four.

He was also suspended for a game last year for failing a drug test. The Tigers beat Auburn 45-10 without Mathieu.

Mathieu has two years of eligibility left and could transfer, but he would have to sit out this season if he went to another school in major college football. If he moved down a level, to FCS, he could play right away.

"I can't imagine he would be here and not want to transfer and go play football," Miles said. "We will help him in every way we can."

LSU isn't quite as deep at cornerback as it was last season, when it had All-American Morris Claiborne and often used Mathieu as a nickleback. Tharold Simon is the other starter opposite Mathieu. Second on the depth chart are redshirt freshman Jalen Collins and freshman Jalen Mills.

I can't say I'm surprised. He always came off very cocky to me, like he was above everyone else. Sad to see such a good athlete waste his talent though, but LSU will plug another guy in there and they'll be fine. In coverage he was marginal, always going for the big play. Returning punts is where he'll be missed most.

I'll be honest I at first I thought Les walked into the LSU locker room and Tyrann was playing NCAA football with RGIII on the Tigers

Or hoped that was what happened.

Yet people say weed isnt addictive. If this is because of a failed drug test (his 3rd) he cant play for a NCAA school because hed be ineligible. Looks like NAIA or a HBCU, hell, maybe a JUCO.

Mathieu's ball skills are just stupid crazy. Near impossible to teach it. But what he gained notoriety for was that he was a decent cornerback who was really good at blitzing off of the edge. That was his game, and Chavis pretty much set him up to do just that. IDK if LSU has the talent in DB to replicate his blitzing ability, but from what i've read, everybody in line after Mathieu was just as good at coverage, but needed some work on playing to the LOS.

However, I expect Chavis to just switch to a more traditional scheme and drop this cornerback blitz stuff, unless he thinks Simon is capable of doing it.

Being completely honest, If this was Alex Hurst or Dworaczyk, I would be devastated. This is a hit to the defense, no denying it, but's it's just a dent.
