Do you know baseball rules?

Anyone think they know some of these rules i am going to list...

1. tie goes to the runner

2. the ball hits the plate is fair or foul

3. the bat is part of the hands

4. foul-tip is alive or dead ball (the ball nicks of the bat and goes into catcher glove) a runner stealing does he have to go back?

5. does a batter have to make an attempt to get out of the way with a ball coming towrds him?

6. is being on the base safe if it hits you?

These our just common ones. don't be upset if you get it right or wrong.

1. True (Not technically a written rule, but more of a guideline that umps follow)

2. Foul

3. False. The hands are their own entity if not swinging.

4. Live ball if catcher catches it. Runner is free to advance.

5. Yes. If it hits him in the base path he is out.

6. Yes.

EDIT - Forgot 6 was only in foul territory. Damn.

1. Nope, can never be an exact tie, you are either out or safe.
2. foul
3. Nope, if you get hit on the hand and don't swing, you go to first. If you swing and get hit on the hands its a strike because you swung, not a foul ball.

6. No if a runner gets hit anywhere they are out

2. I'm sure home plate is in fair territory, the base lines meet at the bottom point. Since the bases are in fair territory, it wouldn't make sense for home to be in foul territory.

If you chop down on the ball and it goes straight now, hitting home, it is still in fair territory therefore the ball is still in play. Heck, if you hit the ball backwards and it spins back into fair territory without being touched, it's still fair.

6. I'm not really sure, but it would make sense to me that if a runner is on the bag and the ball hits him, he is still safe. I mean, if he is on the bag and he is tagged with the ball, he is still safe. Why would a batted ball be any different?

This usually only applies to the runner on third, but if he is standing in foul territory and the ball hits him, he is still safe and the ball is ruled foul.

1. False. The umpire uses his best judgement in these cases (one party always beats the other).
2. Ruled a foul ball
3. False. The hands are part of the arms, which are in turn a part of the body.
4. Live ball
5. Yes, otherwise this is interference
6. Safe (although I've never seen this in action)

6 is just one of those rare ones you don't see. How many times have you seen a ball been hit and the runner not be off the base? It just doesn't happen. I can't lie, I had to look it up.

As far as the plate thing goes. That makes more sense and now that I think about it I remember several instances where a ball was bunted and it stayed on the plate and was a live ball.

I love these rule interpretation threads. You can always learn something new and find out if you know what you're talking about. Then your appreciation for umpires grows. They need to know these rules right off the bat.

1. That's what they always say, but I'm sure technically this isn't true. Mostly because the umpire is only supposed to call a person out if he is sure an out has been made.

2. Home plate is in fair territory. Luis Castillo made a career out of hitting the ball down off the plate and beating it out for a single, lol.

4. Live ball, the runner is on his own.

5. Are you talking about a batted ball, or a ball thrown by a fielder? On a fair batted ball, the runner is out if it strikes him no matter where he is. If a fielder throws the ball and strikes the runner, and the runner is in the basepath, he is under no obligation to move. He cannot, however make an obvious attempt to block the ball. The umpire can call interference.

It takes a lot to be an umpire, and even if you know the rules you still may not make a good ump. When I was a kid, my dad wanted to become an umpire. He took the classes for Little League and passed them with high marks, but he couldn't stand the fans in the stands. I think he umpired two games overall.

I have a question about a rule. I was at a college game this weekend, and the runner on first started to go to second after the ball bounced to the right fielder. He decided he couldn't make it and slid back to first as the ball got there, but the ball hit him. He was given two bases. Why is that? It had me and my dad really confused.

He decided he couldn't make it and slid back to first as the ball got there, but the ball hit him. He was given two bases. Why is that? It had me and my dad really confused.

What? I assume this was on some kind of botched pickoff play? When was he awarded the two bases? Sounds to me like the ball went out of play at some point.

Sorry, he hit a single so he was on first. The next batter flew out to RF. Runner considered trying for 2nd, but changed his mind after a few steps. As he slid into first, the fielder's throw was low and hit him in the back. When he got to his feet, he was told to go to 3rd.

Sorry, he hit a single so he was on first. The next batter flew out to RF. Runner considered trying for 2nd, but changed his mind after a few steps. As he slid into first, the fielder's throw was low and hit him in the back. When he got to his feet, he was told to go to 3rd.

That makes absolutely no sense. Did a defensive player hinder his return to 1st at all? Did the ball carom off of his back into the dugout?
