I will never forget this game. Ever. Cal was led of course by Jason Kidd, and then Buckley. On this night, they were unflappable from beyond the stripe, led by Jerrod Haase.
On the other hand, everything that could go bad for Duke did. Grant was coming off of missing 2 weeks for his big toe that has been bothering him ever since to this day. Cherokee Parks sprained his ankle late in the 1st half, and did not return.
I think the worst part was the week after, SI had a huge story on the game with the headline something like ..."Kidd dominates Hurley as Cal upsets Duke!"
What?
Hurley had his best scoring game ever that game ( I am going off of memory, and I have watched the game several times since.) He scored like 35 points. Kidd had around 22. Both had double digits assists. Kidds' team won, but by no means did he dominate Hurley. Looking at the boxscores, even JDough couldn't write that.
The Blue Devils season was over. Bobby Hurleys college career was over. I didn't cry, but I'd be lying if a tear didn't come down my cheek as I saw him walk of the court for the last time. The dynasty was almost at its end. The next year, Grant Hill put the team on his back and took them further than even I had hoped...to the title game against Arkansas. And even then it took an all time shot by Thurman to stop the mighty Devils.
My saddest point as a fan.
