Fight Night Round 4 vs. UFC 2009 Undisputed: The Showdown

Boxing became a modern Olympic sport in 1904. The first televised UFC event was in 1993. Their origins can't be argued, but their current popularity certainly can be.

UFC has overshadowed boxing in recent years, creating stars like Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell. Dana White also lured Brock Lesnar into the fold, a fighter who has now become one of the most talked about UFC combatants.

Boxing was once elevated by its heavyweight division, lead by boxers such as Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield. Now boxing relies on its strong welterweight and middleweight divisions. Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Kelly Pavlik are young and exciting fighters, but no one knows if they will be able to sustain the entire sport.

Fans will argue each sport’s entertainment value, equity, relevancy and history until the cows come home. It’s impossible to say which side is correct in almost every sense.

But now at least we have the videogames to judge. UFC 2009 Undisputed was released on May 15 and Fight Night Round 4 on June 25. Let’s get ready to rumble.

This Shows how good both games was and it was also impressive at how good UFC was considering how lackluster the previous UFC games was, all in all u couldnt go wrong with either game.

I disagree with gameplay and staying power they both should go to UFC which would give UFC the edge. Players dont feel stuck in mud in UFC like they do in FNR4 as far as gameplay and there are more of today's characters in UFC than there are in FNR4, plus there is more depth to UFC, so those 2 things will give it a better shelf life than FNR4.

I don't understand how UFC takes a knockdown because of a prediction.....

Not sure about that knockdown round for UFC on "Gameplay Depth". Maybe a 10-9.

UFC has both boxing and grappling/wrestling, but the depth of the boxing action is much greater in FN4. And while I haven't played UFC much outside of the demo, I doubt that it incorporates the strategy you have in FN with the corner games and how damage, stamina, and health are considered. Is there more variety as to how you can win a game in UFC? You can win by punching, kneeing, holds, etc., but in FN4 you can win by working the body, scoring a counter-punch KO, trying to steal rounds, pounding a cut for a stoppage, etc. It's the "sweet science", and it is a science which has more depth than any one single aspect of UFC. I would still give UFC the round, but only 10-9 I think it's a much closer round than one would think.

You can do the exact same thing in UFC. Your point is moot. There is plenty depth in the UFC game because of how many different styles and the ground game alone is chess-like. The only that you can't do in UFC is the Fight Night cornerman mini-game.

10-8 UFC is a fair score.

I just go with whatever game gets the most spin in my xbox. So I'll give the winner to FN4, because ever since I purchased FN, UFC has been collecting dust.

UFCs a pretty good game, but FN legacy mode is more dynamic with randomly generated AI boxers and CAB imports, so your career is different every single time.

UFC career mode has the same exact fighters in every career you start and no CAB imports, that killed it for me right there.

you make some good points about career...but I'm the opposite of you, I bought fn4, did a career, saw the ufc box and decided to play some and it hasn't left since. It's just waaaaay more fun, strategic, visceral, and satisfying. The strikes have intent to injure, I'll still wince occasionally when I get rocked, and online I'll jump up off the couch for various reasons including getting out of a submission frantically, scoring a ko, waiting for the judges.

the UFC captures the sport and the brutality much better - and I'd like to make sure it's understood my points are made by someone who enjoys watching both on TV equally. I love a good boxing match, and love me some good UFC, my post history shows this to be true.

The boxing in fn is stuck in the mud...they really need to get rid of that crappy counter system (ufc has it but doesn't make a 'sub-game' around it) and re-animate pretty much everything.

There are a few things it does better in the career (not the minigames!) but they aren't as impactful as I originally thought. photo game face and especially BoxerSHare are effing AWESOME! and I hope Yukes steals that stuff and puts it in their game.

All in all I've been thrilled with my UFC game, and the longer I have FN4, the more I kind of think I should have rented it. I think it's highly overrated accross the board. For me it's a 7.5max (which is still good) Here's hoping they make the punches matter the next time around. For me the gameplay isn't even close, UFC simply on a different (higher) level.

                    My vote's for Fight Night........

I really like UFC. But boxer share and DLC are gonna keep Fight Night playable for a long, long time in my house.

I'm already up ot 87 fighters!!!! And just WAITING for a good Holyfield to show up.

My vote also goes to FNR4

I liked both games but for me the career mode in UFC was to short and the one in FNR4 seamed alot longer to me. But like Richard said at the end of the year both games will be at the top of there sport. I want to see if UFC can stay there when EA puts it MMA title out. Guess we will have to wait and see. Richard this was a great read. Good job

Maybe if you're an aficionado of one or the other, but for a casual fan like me it's closer to comparing football to rugby. Similar skillsets and goals, just different rules and styles.

For me and I'd bet many others, these two games were considered side by side as rivals for our hard-earned $60.

I have both games, and I can sum up easily why I like FN better than UFC hands down:

Just finished a fight between Lennox Lewis and Jermaine Taylor. Lewis is a much bigger fighter, with better reach. But Taylor is quick and powerful inside. I'm playing as Lewis, and trying to keep Taylor outside, but it is a constant battle with Taylor working his way in close in nearly every round. Just couldn't stay away from him. All the same, I have the power advantage and with a few well placed hits, I have Taylor on the mat in Round 5. He gets up. 3 rounds later, I'm on the mat and bounce back up. The commentators are telling me I've lost this one bad on the scorecards. And I figure I am, since Taylor is getting alot more shots in than I am, since I have not really been able to keep him where I want him--outside. But I keep taking my shots, wearing him out with lots of body shots and hitting him square in the head when I can. And so it comes down to Round 10, after a full 29 minutes of fighting......I know if this goes to the cards, I lose. But I've rocked Taylor several times in this round, and my body shots are finally having an effect---he's slowing way down, getting sloppy even. And then it comes....Taylor comes with an
