NBA 2K10: Defense and Offense Guide

    Hey guys,

I took a stab and posted a blog about playing offense and defense on NBA 2K10. I really hope this helps other guys here to play offense or defense on 2K10 the right way. Check it out, please be nice..

I've seen Pared say to put defensive assist at 100 and now I see you say to put it at 5. I've only tried it at 20 and 100. At those settings, I feel like the auto vacuum suck in animation effect is still pulling me to whatever defender I'm closest to or assigned to on a switch rather than letting me move where I want to go. I hope your setting of 5 is good. I'll try it out.

They higher the value, the more the CPU will control your guy.. Defensive assist at 5 gives you 95% of control over your guy, plus you can use the L trigger for pressure/tight defense..

i keep mine at 0 and the game feels great to me. figuring out how to get your players to move the way you want them to takes a bit of practice though...it isnt very intuitive.

The thing is, when you put it on 0 you wouldn't be able to use the L-trigger for pressure D...

False. I too play with it on 0 and use pressure D when needed.

Nice guide Green Flash.I don't agree with the use of the shot button(square). This is not realistic. It's like using buttons for punches instead of the analogue stick in Fight Night Round 4.
You can also use intense D with controller at 0 but you must be at the right position facing your matchup.I don't know though if it drains stamina as when set to 5 and above. That's why i prefer it at 5 because i can see the red meter flashing.
Using plays is a must for me too and i also use the floor pattern and be patient.I'm obsessed with realistic stats and i want the game to be played as real life basketball. The 2nd patch is a must for me (i don't care about roles/chemistry.Trades are off and i allow them for 2 weeks only). With help d strength at 100,on ball steals at 30 for cpu and shooting at 41,43,45,47 for both cpu/hum this game is just perfect for me.

They are a few things up there...I just don't agree with....I thought I was the only that thought shot stick and the defense assist thing were out of wack. I can shoot in the high 50-60%....I make more shots with the shot stick.

Using the shot stick isn't very realistic either. In the end, you're still using the same controller to shoot the basketball. So, it will never be realistic, unless they give us a motion sensor controller that's shaped like a basketball. Using the X button doesn't make the game any less sim.

While the shot stick is not for everybody, I think the face button is much easier to master for beginners. I recommend the face button for the people who are having trouble with jumpshots.

                        Thanks for the feedback guys!

Appreciate the guide, but I have to respectfully disagree about playing defense as only your PF or C. The only way you can get a fair, realistic game is to guard the ballhandler. If I play a guy who is camping as their bigs...first they immediately lose all respect, secondly I am trying to play against the other player, not the CPU, so my offense is going to start and end at whoever the defense controls.

The only way you can get a truly sim game is if both players are confident that their opponent will be guarding WHOEVER the offense passes the ball. Otherwise the offense is being forced to go to one player, by something as simple as the defense opting to let the CPU guard particular players.

It's not a basketball strategy...it is a strategy to hide weak defensive skills. If a player (gamer) is not good at defense, which is half the game, why should they win? The best strategy is to play the right way, take your rightful losses until your defense improves and you can compete legitimately without taking advantage of off the ball defense.

I'm going to sound rude and snappy here, but seriously, this whole "OMG THIS IS NOT SIM I'M DISGUSTED AT YOUR CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP TACTICS AND YOU SUCK AT THE GAME" thing is getting ridiculous.

Well, you see, the thing is that playing on-ball defense is needlessly difficult, because the ball handler usually skates all over the court and the defensive controls don't respond nearly as well as they should. Additionally, there is no real footplanting and momentum in 2K10, which gives the attacking player even more of an unfair advantage. You can offset that advantage by letting the CPU player guard whomever is controlling the ball, because the CPU does not have to rely on broken defensive controls in order to defend effectively.

And guess what? You're playing a -video game-. That's right. You're not playing real life basketball, so to say that you will lose respect for somebody just because they don't have the twitch reflexes of a seasoned FPS veteran that are required for perfect on-ball defense is just baffling to me. Are you seriously telling everyone that it's not "sim" to play off ball defense? I ask, how is that relevant? What does that have to do with playing sim? It's not like we're talking about lunging into passing lanes everytime or something.

We're "taking advantage of off ball defense", as you say. Well, in that case, you're taking advantage of the lack of a proper footplanting system. It works both ways.

Stop playing vigilante and let others enjoy their game the way they want to, if they're not spoiling online play by using exploits or playing arcade basketball. And if you're getting so upset by people playing off ball, then improve your offense, it's that simple.

I gotta agree with CX here. There's nothing sim when you guard the ball handler. Playing real basketball, you don't play the ballhandler all the time right? You play with your man on D. It's your choice if you want to guard the ball handler, it's your choice. The thing is when you guard the ball handler, they always find a way to get pass you. The control is not responsive enough for us players to counter their moves. That's why it's better if you let your other guys guard the ball handler.
