Just Win Baby! HC 09 Raiders Dynasty

Note: This one got closed out due problems with the 360. I am currently doing a Chiefs franchise. Check it out @ http://www.operationsports.com/forum...9-dynasty.html

Breaking News: Unknown to coach the Oakland Raiders

After a tumultuous off season, GM Al Davis has fired Head Coach Lane Kiffin. Owner and GM Al Davis shocked the NFL world by announcing the firing of Kiffin and his intention to hire a coaching unknown for the 7-9 Oakland Raiders.

A source inside the Raiders organization had this to say, “Al Davis is crazy!"

Coach Joslin comes from Oklahoma State University where he was an offensive assistant. When reached for comment, OSU Head Coach, Mike Gundy had this to say, "Really? This isn't some kind of joke?"

When pressed about his unorthodox decision, Davis had this to say, "As GM of the Raiders, I've built one of the most talented teams in the league. Talent isn't the problem, coaching is the problem!" "Norv Turner, Art Shell, Lane Kiffin all of those guys were idiots! They didn't know what to do with all the talent I brought in, they always wanted to fight me, they wanted their guys...but they didn't have any idea about what makes a good football player. I know! Mark my words JaMarcus Russell will be a Pro Bowl QB! This time around, I'm doing things right. I'll handle the GM side of things. I'll draft the players, I'll tell the coach who to re-sign, and who to trade for. I know talent, and I'll make sure we have the talent to win. Coach Joslin will focus on winning ball games." "I told him that, I told him, just win, baby...just win!"

It remains to be seen exactly how this will work out, but sources around the league speculate that Owner/GM Davis will have exclusive control on who to sign and who to cut. Coach Joslin will be responsible for putting together a Draft Board, but GM Davis will be the one picking the players. GM Davis will handle all the Training Camp Invites. Although some personnel people around the league believe that Davis will allow Coach Joslin some leeway when it comes to bringing in Free Agents and Camp Invites. A source within the Raiders organization, said Davis is planning on allowing Joslin $5M to sign free agents.

When reached for comment, Coach Joslin had this to say, "I'm excited by the opportunity to coach in the NFL. I feel confidant that I will be able to work with Owner/GM Davis."

Sources close to Coach Joslin speculated off the record, that Joslin jumped at the chance to coach the Raiders. It's an NFL team, what coach doesn't want to coach at that level...even if it is for Al Davis.

Coaches around the league are skeptical that Coach Joslin is ready.

Coach Joslin and the Raiders use the Franchise Tag on CB N. Asomugha. Asomugha was unhappy with being franchised as he had been hoping for a major payday and change of scenery.

Coach Joslin and DB Coach Black were in total agreement on the need to keep CB Asomugha. Coach Joslin is planning on blitzing on almost every down, and needs corners that can shutdown opposing receivers in man coverage. So this was a no brainer.
        Around the League

The Giants franchise K Lawrence Tynes.

The Bears franchise OLB Lance Briggs.

The Steelers franchise LG Alan Faneca.

The Patriots franchise WR Randy Moss.

The Titans franchise DT Albert Haynesworth.

The Bengals franchise DE Justin Smith.

Unexpectedly Arizona lets OLB Karlos Dansby explore Free Agency. Dallas decides LT Flozell Adams is getting a little too long in the tooth, and opt not to tag him. Baltimore lets OLB Terrell Suggs walk away as well.

          Oakland Raiders
Owner/GM Al Davis has laid down the law, letting Coach Joslin know that he expects him to bring in a top flight (OVR 85 or better) DE, OLB, and DT. Davis let Coach Joslin know that he doesn't care how he does it, trade for them, get them in free agency or draft them, just get them baby!

Coach Joslin looked at the options in free agency, and found them to be unavailable or too expensive. So that leaves trading for them or drafting them.

The Raiders were contacted by Mike Shanahan and the Broncos, to see if Oakland had any interest in DE Elvis Dumervil. Dumervil is a undersized speed guy, and a great fit for Coach Joslin's Attack Defense. After a few rounds of calls back and forth, a deal was finalized.

Broncos send DE Elvis Dumervil (88 OVR) to Oakland in exchange for the Raiders 3rd and 4th round selections in 2009.

Owner/GM Al Davis was reportedly happy with the acquisition.

The Raiders did acquire two players in free agency.

Coach Joslin wanted to solidify the OL with players who could run and pass block. To that end, he worked with OL Coach Tom Cobble to identify 10 prospects from the Free Agent offensive lineman (LG T. Fonoti, C J. Hartwig, C D. Koppen, RT M. Starks, LT T. Tucker, LT C. Colmer, RT M. Williams, RG J. Terry, LG J. Bell, and LG Z. Pillar.)

Working on a shoestring budget for free agents, Joslin missed out on his top rated guys, but was able to bring in LT T. Tucker and LT C. Colmer.

LT Torrin Tucker signs a 2yr deal worth $1.3M with no bonus

LT Chris Colmer signs a 1yr deal worth $500K with no bonus

Nice trade on Dumervil, I have him in my Jets career and he is great at OVR 90 making the Pro Bowl. What's the ratings for the two LTs though? From the contract they look like backup and 3rd stringers.

Re: Just Win Baby! HC 09 Raiders Dynasty

LT Torrin Tucker (OVR 82/82 POT)- Tucker doesn't look like a starter, but has mid to high 80's in pass blocking (85), run blocking (86) and decent impact blocking (74). He's a guy I've had before and he outplays his overall.

LT Chris Colmer (OVR 80/82 POT)- I'm hoping I can get him to outplay his overall like Tucker. He also has mid 80's in run blocking (86), pass blocking (84) and impact blocking (85).

The price was right and they were worth the gamble...the Raiders OL stinks (LT M. Henderson 79/84, LG R. Gallery 82/82, C J. Grove 79/80, RG C. Morris 78/80, and RT M. Wilson 87/90), so these guys have a decent shot of starting, at least in the short term.

                  NFL 2008 Draft Coverage
                  1st Round

                  1. MIA QB Matt Ryan-Dolphins draft their Franchise QB.

                  2. STL DE Derrick Harvey-a shocker here, DE is a need, but most teams had DE C. Long rated well above Harvey! Harvey can be solid, but I think everyone is always going to wonder why the Rams didn't go with Chris Long.

                  3. BAL traded with ATL to move up (8th overall, 2009 1st, 2009 3rd) HB Darren McFadden, Ravens trade up to get the most talented player in the draft.

                  4. OAK OLB Keith Rivers-GM Al Davis was wanting a force at OLB to compliment MLB K. Morrison and OLB T. Howard...he got it in Rivers who is a tackling machine.

                  5. KC DE Chris Long- Chiefs love that he fell to them at 5

                  6. NYJ QB Joe Flacco- Jets go for a franchice QB

                  7. NWE DT Glenn Dorsey- Patriots add some beef to their DL

                  8. ATL LT Jake Long- Many thought LT Long would go in the first few picks, with many teams having hims as thier #1 guy.

                  9. CIN DT Sedrick Ellis- Bengals look to solidify their DL

                  10. TEN traded with NO to move up. OLB Jerod Mayo- Solid all around player, but I'm not sold on him as a top 10 pick.

                  11. BUF LG Brandon Albert- The Bills were hoping Long would fall a few more spots, but are happy to add Albert to their OL

                  12. DEN LT Ryan Clady- Broncos look to improve their OL

                  13. TEN received from CAR as RFA compensation for RT David Stewart. CB Leodis McKelvin- with their second pick in the first round the Titans continue to work on their defense.

                  14. CHI RT Gosder Cherilus- Bears look to improve their OL

                  15. DET CB Dominique Cromartie- I'm not sold on this guy, but the Lions need someone to pair with CB Leigh Bodden

                  16. ARI LT Duane Brown- another team looks to improve their OL

                  17. KC LT, Chris Williams- the Chiefs go OL with their second pick in the 1st round.

                  18. HOU RT Jeff Otah- do you see a trend? It looks like OL was a priority for a lot of teams.

                  19. SEA traded with PHI to move up (25th, 3rd, 2009 6th) CB Mike Jenkins- love this pick! Holmgren and the Seahawks knew they'd have to move up to get their guy. For my money, Jenkins is the top CB in the draft. Great trade, great pick!

                  20. TB CB Aqib Talib- Buccaneers looking for an eventual replacement for R. Barber

                  21. SEA traded with WAS to move up (4th, 2009 1st, 2009 3rd) HB Rashard Mendenhall- The Seahawks look to Illinois to replace the departed Shaun Alexander. Solid pick!

                  22. DAL LT Sam Baker-underrated, should be a solid performer in Dallas.

                  23. PIT HB Chris Johnson- The Steelers really wanted Mendenhall, but will have to settle for Johnson.

                  24. TEN TE Dustin Keller- The Titans third pick in the first round! And what a waste!

                  25. PHI traded with Sea LE Lawrence Jackson- Andy Reid was wanting more pressure off the ends and hopes Jackson will be the guy to give it to him.

                  26. JAX OLB Vernon Gholston- talented pass rusher, considered by many to be the top OLB in the draft...he's a solid pass rusher, but some scouts do find him to be too one dimensional...it all depends on how Del Rio and the Jags use him.

                  27. BAL traded with SD to move up (2nd, 4th, 2009 4th) CB Antoine Cason- Baltimore uses its second pick to add depth in the secondary.

                  28. NWE traded up with DAL to move up (3rd, 3rd, 2009 2nd) CB Tracy Porter- not a big fan. Maybe Belicheck sees something I don't.

                  29. SF SS Kenny Phillips- great pick! Phillips has everything it takes to be a Pro Bowler.

                  30. GB HB Jonathon Stewart- I'm not sure why the Packers felt the need to go HB here, especially with Ryan Grant already in their backfield.

                  31. NYG HB Felix Jones- Some say he's just as talented as his Arkansas teammate...don't believe it, Jones is injury prone and I bet the Giants don't get 8 games from him this season.

                  32. KC traded with MIA to move up (3rd, 2009 2nd) CB Brandon Flowers- Solid man corner, and a definite upgrade. Good pick by the Chiefs.

                  10 picks used on OLs
                  8 picks used on DBs

                    Oakland Raiders Draft Recap

1st Round, 4th overall pick OLB Keith Rivers, USC- GM/Owner Al Davis wanted a top flight OLB and the Raiders got one in Keith Rivers. Rivers is expected to immediately move into the starting lineup.

4th Round, 5th overall pick WR Mario Manningham, Michigan- Coach Joslin wanted to revamp the Raider WR corps, and got a good start with this talented player from Michigan. Manningham looks to be WR1 opening day.

4th Round, 24th pick (GM Al Davis works a trade with the Steelers to move up. Oakland sends one of their 2008 7th round picks, their 2009 5th rounder, and their 2009 6th round pick) DE Tony Bake, TCU- Everyone was shocked when GM Al Davis announced the trade, and everyone was even more shocked when they found out he did it to bring in DE Tony Bake. Bake was a player off most people's radar. He's talented, but most experts predicted Bake would go undrafted.

6th Round, 3rd pick DE Eric Baker, Michigan St.-The Raiders continue to revamp their DL with the acquisition of Baker. Baker is an undersized speed rusher and will likely be a backup if he makes the team.

7th Round, 19th pick SS Bo Wilson, Beth Cookman- Word out of Oakland is that Coach Joslin didn't really want Wilson with this pick and in fact had numerous players rated higher on his draft board. Wilson will likely be a backup for Oakland.

Owner/GM Al Davis was reportedly quite upset that his team didn't get a game changer at DT.

                    Undrafted Free Agents

                    WR Dorien Bryant, Purdue
                    LG David Hale, Weber State
                    FB Carl Stewart, Auburn
                    FS Josh Barrett, Arizona State

                      Free Agent Signings

As the Raiders prepare for training camp, Coach Joslin and the Raiders sign CB Ty Law to a $1M/1yr deal.

Also signed were RT Damien Woody ($900K/1yr deal)
and HB Deshaun Foster ($1M/1yr deal)

CB Law is expected to backup starters CB N. Asomugha and CB D. Hall.

Speculation is that RT D. Woody will be moved to Center. Woody, a former 1st round pick, has played all OL positions except LT, and was drafted as center by the Patriots.

HB D. Foster is expected to compete with Justin Fargas for the starting HB spot.

Overall Roster Breakdown Rating of B

The Raiders are ranked 13th in Total Team Talent. GM/Owner Davis feels they should be rated higher, while almost every football fan, analyst, and writer feel they should be ranked significantly lower.

Training Camp Moves: GM Al Davis cut UFA CB J. Wilhite, and UFA LG D. Hale. Wilhite was a longshot to make the team, but sources say Coach Joslin was excited about Hale and many felt Hale was on track to be named starting LG.

GM Davis also parted ways with a few of his guys, namely C Jake Grove, FB Oren O'Neal, RG Cooper Carlisle, CB Stanford Routt, and DT Terdell Sands.

                          Preseason

The Raiders go a remarkable 3-1 in the preseason. Admittedly it is only preseason, but considering almost everyone thought the Raiders would lose every game, it is quite a shock.

Arguably the most shocking thing about the 3-1 record is that the Raiders did it without having any truly notable performances on the offensive side of the ball. All the QB's were terribly inaccurate throwing three interceptions for every TD throw. The halfbacks averaged a meager 2.7yds a carry. Needless to say, the fans are a little concerned.
