Husker make huge comeback to stay afloat in Big Ten West
Adam Jitterbug, ASPN
September 25, 2010
Down 28-7 early, the hometown Cornhuskers looked like a team that thought its season was done after a rousing victory over Michigan last week. But the Huskers awoke from their stupor in the second quarter and completely shut down Minnesota in every facet of the game for the rest of the way.
After giving up numerous big plays early - including the opening 89-yard kickoff return by the speedy
Larry Zolak - the Blackshirts settled in and shut the clamps down on
Mike Johnson and the Gopher offense. The sophomore was absolutely ineffective in his first game back from injury, and you sort of have to wonder why the Gophers didn't just ride the hot hand of Larry Watson.
Nebraska ultimately outgained Minnesota 534-274, and despite three costly lost fumbles, charged back to take the win. T.J. Flutie's four touchdown passes highlight the continued emergence of slot man
J.W. Swayne, who enjoyed his third straight 100-yard game and has five touchdowns on the year. It was a nice return, too, for
Flip Quander, who has had a miserably invisible year rushing the football but managed a 95 yard performance today. Senior center
Bobby Reese has been an absolute rock on this inconsistent Husker O-line. He's making a heck of a case for himself for postseason honors right now.
Some questionable playcalling there at the end, but it doesn't matter with this Husker victory. Hanging on to a 6 point lead, Nebraska kept it in the air to try to put up more points, and gave the ball away deep in their own territory. Fortunately, the Blackshirts held and linebacker
Madre Brewster blocked Eric Breaux's field goal attempt.
Minnesota's nice little run looks like it might be at an end, as they will face Wisconsin and Penn State in the following weeks and could have used some momentum from this game. Nebraska will carry their second straight victory into a showdown with #18 Purdue, who are coming off a 27-10 loss to Penn State. While Wisconsin and Penn State are running rampant through the Big 10 right now, it should be noted that two of Nebraska's 3 losses have now come against what's almost a lock to be the #1 and #2 teams in the nation - Oklahoma and Wisconsin.

TOP 25 RUNDOWN
#8 Florida (3-2) 28
#14 Tennessee (5-0) 44
UT was a fast riser last week, from unranked to 14, but they showed it wasn't just the media pumping up a matchup. Tennessee destroyed Florida, rise to #3 in the rankings, and travel to #25 Alabama this week. It's about the time of year the undefeated teams are getting serious love. Why is Texas (3-2) still in the Top 5?
Cal (4-1) 38
#1 UCLA (4-1) 20
Cal jumps back into the rankings with a handy upset of the top-ranked team in the nation at their own house. How many of us figured the Bruins to hold at #1, anyway?
Kansas (4-1) 27
#3 Texas (3-2) 24
How in the world does Texas drop just one spot in the polls after this home loss to the Kansas Jayhawks? It's a mystery, but with Colorado now gone, KU gives some nice Big 12 North representation to the - oh, right. There's no divisions in the Big 12 anymore.
#17 Ohio State (5-1) 21
Iowa (1-4) 19
The Buckeyes finally put Iowa out of its misery, dropping the Hawkeyes - who are now Officially Hapless - from the Top 25. Iowa had a tough opening schedule though, so we'll see if they can recover enough to make a bowl run.

Florida-Georgia is the crown jewel of this week's television slate and that should be an exceedingly good SEC showdown to watch. Georgia's good, but Florida is better than its 3-2 record. Let's go with senior QB
Alfonso Pickens giving his gators a much needed win here, on the road.
Florida 31, Georgia 20.
Upset special #2 comes with Kansas State over Oklahoma. That's right - you heard it here first. It's not an issue of talent, but I think OU's been somewhat overrated and untested so far this year. Look for underrated senior Wildcat tailback
De'Mond Keckin to continue add on to his 739 yards on the year.
Kansas State 34, Oklahoma 27
Utah and Colorado face off in Boulder in a battle of Pac-10 newcomers. Can't go against Utah with this one - shouldn't even be close. Colorado is really floundering right now.
Utah 33, Colorado 14
Washington State is a fast riser in the polls, and one of the remaining undefeated teams. But they haven't met USC yet.
USC 28, Wash St. 13
Boston College is about to get a huge test with Miami. Hurricanes QB
Gregg Dunaway has struggled so far this year, but he's about to get back on track.
Miami 27, Boston College 21
