Coaching Career of James Frizzell (NCAA 11)

Howdy, folks. Well, after further thought and a couple weeks of pondering, I decided to go the route of a coaching career rather than simply taking over at West Virginia.

I have decided to take over at San Diego State. SDSU is a one-star program, but is not terrible. Also, they play in a large stadium, which is nice. Add to that good uniforms and the fact that they play in the best non-AQ conference (the Mountain West) and I felt like they were the best choice available. SDSU went 4-8 (2-6) in 2009, their four wins being against Southern Utah, New Mexico State, Colorado State, and New Mexico.

2010 San Diego State Aztecs Season Preview

San Diego, CA - This year begins a new era in San Diego State Aztecs football history as brand new head coach James Frizzell was hired this past offseason to take the reigns of the Aztecs. Frizzell has no real head coaching experience, but he has played numerous NCAA Football games on his Xbox and Xbox 360. Perhaps his most vaunted coaching accomplishments are his College Hoops 2K8 career legacy in which he has made three trips to the final four in 13 years, including a trip to the Title Game against Maryland.

But that was basketball and this is football. The new head coach will have the benefit of a decent team and a soft non-conference schedule, however. San Diego State appears to be a rather middle-of-the-pack Mountain West team this season, so a 4-4 conference record is to be expected. However, the non-conference schedule is rather delicious with three pasties in Nicholls State, New Mexico State, and Utah State. All of these games San Diego State should win. The other non-conference game is at Missouri. While it is unlikely that the Aztecs will top the Tigers on the road, it is certainly not out of the realm of possibility. Even with a loss to Missouri, however, it seems very possible that the Aztecs will make a bowl game in Coach Frizzell's first season. In fact, it would be a disappointment if they fail to make a bowl game. The pressure is on; there is no honeymoon period for this new head coach!

The offense is led by junior quarterback Ryan Lindley. Lindley is a very solid passer with some running ability. His favorite target this season will be senior wide receiver Vincent Brown. Ronnie Hillman is only a true freshman, but the halfback has already made an impression in fall practice and should make his presence felt as the starting running back for the Aztecs this fall.

The defense was burned often last year. While the defense should be somewhat improved this year, it still continues to be the question mark for this team heading into this season. It is likely that the offense will have to outscore many of the Aztecs' opponents as the defense will have trouble getting stops in all likelihood. Junior linebacker Miles Burris leads the Aztecs' defensive unit.

All in all, our projection for this season is a 7-5 (4-4) season for the Aztecs, finishing fifth in the Mountain West behind TCU, Utah, BYU, and Air Force.

Aztecs Gets off to the Right Start Under Coach Frizzell

San Diego, CA (AP) - The San Diego State Aztecs (1-0, 0-0 MWC) opened up their season against the Nicholls State Colonels (0-1, 0-0 Southland) and proceeded to pound them into the ground, just as any FBS school should do against an inferior FCS squad.

The Aztecs did nothing out of the ordinary, but anytime a brand new head coach can taste a 48-9 victory in his first game as head coach, that has to be a good thing.

This game was never close as the Aztecs piled up 425 yards of total offense and 320 passing yards. Ryan Lindley showed that he deserved the hype he had been getting this offseason as he threw for 288 yards and three touchdowns on only 19 passing attempts.

"We went out there and did our thing today," said first-year head coach James Frizzell. "I'm not sure how much we really found out about our team today, but being 1-0 is always a good thing. However, I think I could have stayed home and coached this team from my couch and we still would have rolled up a huge victory. Bottom line, we'll wait until next week to judge how good we really are. For now, we'll enjoy the all-important 'W'!"

The Aztecs will travel to Las Cruces, New Mexico next week to take on the New Mexico State Aggies.

Aztecs Run Away With a Win in New Mexico

Las Cruces, New Mexico (AP) - In shootout fashion, the San Diego State Aztecs (2-0, 0-0 MWC) outscored the New Mexico State Aggies (0-1, 0-0 WAC) 56-30 to earn their second win of the season and move to 2-0. Both teams surpassed the 400-yard barrier in total offense, but ultimately the fourth quarter decided the game.

This game was really closer than the score indicates. The Aztecs entered the fourth quarter with a 42-30 lead and held that lead until 3:42 left in the game, when Ryan Lindley completed a 42 yard touchdown pass to Dominique Sandifer to put the Aztecs up 49-30 late in the game. To add insult to injury, third-string running back Walter Kazee scored on a 25 yard touchdown run with under two minutes left in the game to make the final score 56-30 in favor of San Diego State, despite the Aggies being within striking distance until the final four minutes.

Defensively, both teams had their issues. Both teams surpassed 425 yards of offense and passed for over 275 yards. In fact, New Mexico State racked up 315 passing yards, a fact which could serve to expose the Aztecs secondary a bit.

Whatever the case, the Aztecs move to 2-0 on the season and will take on Missouri next week on the road. Missouri will prove to be a tough task, particularly because Blain Gabbert and the Tigers' spread offense loves to throw the ball around the yard. If San Diego State's secondary fails to show up again, Missouri will win in a rout.

                  San Diego State Upsets Missouri

Columbia, MO (AP) - Turnovers often decide who wins and loses a game. One couldn't find a truer example of the power of turning the ball over than what happened this afternoon in Columbia, Missouri.

The Missouri Tigers (2-1, 0-0 Big 12) racked up 620 yards of offense, including 557 yards of passing by Blaine Gabbert. However, 620 yards of offense does you no good when you turn the ball over seven times, which is just what the Missouri Tigers did this afternoon. When you compare that to San Diego State's (3-0, 0-0 MWC) one turnover, then the Tigers had a -6 turnover margin this afternoon.

The Aztecs only amassed 422 yards of offense, but it was enough to pull off a 55-45 stunner over the Missouri Tigers in a game that saw both teams combine for 100 points.

Turnovers in the fourth quarter especially hurt Missouri. San Diego State went into the fourth quarter tied at 31 apiece with Missouri. However, after a bevy of turnovers and some offensive success, the Aztecs suddenly held a 55-31 lead with 3:31 to go.

The Missouri Tigers made a run in the final three-and-a-half minutes to cut the lead to 10 points, but after a failed onside kick with 1:05 to go, the Tigers suddenly came under the realization that they were going to lose.

Ryan Lindley led the way for the Aztecs with 315 passing yards and a trio of touchdown passes. Vincent Brown caught one of Lindley's touchdown passes as he led all receivers with six receptions for 104 yards and a touchdown.

However, disaster struck late in the game when Ryan Lindley went down with an abdominal strain. He is expected to miss three weeks or so with the strain, which means he will miss next week's game against Utah State and more than likely the BYU game on October 2nd. Freshman backup quarterback Jake Bernards will fill in for Lindley for next week's game against Utah State.

"This is a huge win for us and this program," beamed Coach Frizzell after the game. "Surely, the primary reason we won is because [Missouri] decided to give us many Christmas presents in the form of turnovers, but we'll take it and move on to 3-0."

With the victory, San Diego State will move to 3-0 in its non-conference slate. The Aztecs will take on their final non-conference opponent at home next Saturday as they will take on Utah State, who at 1-2, should be an easy victory for the Aztecs to move to 4-0 going into Mountain West Conference play.

                  San Diego State - 55, Missouri - 45

                    Aztecs Slip Past Utah State

San Diego, CA (AP) - The Utah State Aggies (1-3, 0-1 WAC) gave the San Diego State Aztecs (4-0, 0-0 MWC) all they could handle, but in the end the San Diego State Aztecs managed to escape by without staring quarterback Ryan Lindley.

The Aztecs did not get their first touchdown until 5:32 left in the game when Jake Bernards tossed a 73 yard touchdown pass to a wide open DeMarco Sampson for the go-ahead score.

Prior to the touchdown pass, San Diego State had scored 12 points, all coming on field goals. The Aztecs held a 9-7 advantage at halftime and a 12-7 advantage after three quarters of action, but a Utah State score early in the fourth quarter combined with a two-point conversion gave the Aggies a 15-12 advantage. Another field goal a few minutes later extended the lead to 18-12.

But Bernards' previously mentioned touchdown pass gave the Aztecs a 19-18 advantage with 5:32 remaining. Utah State would make things interesting late in the game, however, setting up for a 48 yard field goal with under two minutes remaining. However, the field goal landed wide right, securing a San Diego State victory. Ronnie Hillman topped off the effort with a 66 yard touchdown run in the closing seconds to make the final score 26-18.

Filling in for the injured Ryan Lindley, Jake Bernards struggled at quarterback for the Aztecs. Bernards only completed eight of his 24 passing attempts and outside of his 73 yard bomb late in the game, he was ineffective passing the ball all day long. Fortunately, Ronnie Hillman was excellent carrying the football for the Aztecs, as he amassed 147 rushing yards this afternoon.

With non-conference play over, the Aztecs will get a bye week before taking on Brigham Young and Air Force to open up Mountain West Conference action.

                    San Diego State - 26, Utah State - 18

Thanks. I probably won't add any picture or graphics, though. I'm trying to do make these reports not take so long since I can only play/update on weekends and adding those things takes up a lot of time in some cases.

Also, I have saved some of my reports so that I can post them during the week, but the only playing I can do occurs on the weekends.

Brigham Young Holds Off Aztecs' Rally

The San Diego State Aztecs (4-1, 0-1 MWC) outscored the BYU Cougars (5-1, 1-1 MWC) 24-8 in the second half of this afternoon's ball game, but it was not enough for the Aztecs to win their fifth game of the season.

Despite their second half success, the Aztecs were atrocious in the first half as BYU jumped out to a 20-0 halftime lead, dominating in all facets of the game. San Diego State looked to have no chance.

But the Aztecs responded with 21 points in under three minutes midway through the third quarter to grab a slim 21-20 lead. BYU would respond with a touchdown of their own late in the third quarter to make it 28-21 with a two-point conversion. The Aztecs would tack on a field goal early in the fourth quarter, but the Cougars' defense shut San Diego State down for the remainder of the game as the Cougars won their first Mountain West Conference game of the season.

Ryan Lindley returned from injury for the Aztecs, but struggled, completing only 15 of 36 pass attempts for 166 yards and a touchdown. Ronnie Hillman picked up some of the slack, however, as he ran for 101 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 21 carries.

Jake Heaps led the Cougars with 237 yards passing and a touchdown as he dissected the San Diego State secondary as he completed 26 of his 37 pass attempts.

                              Brigham Young - 28, San Diego State - 24
