Aztecs Run Away With a Win in New Mexico
Las Cruces, New Mexico (AP) - In shootout fashion, the San Diego State Aztecs (2-0, 0-0 MWC) outscored the New Mexico State Aggies (0-1, 0-0 WAC) 56-30 to earn their second win of the season and move to 2-0. Both teams surpassed the 400-yard barrier in total offense, but ultimately the fourth quarter decided the game.
This game was really closer than the score indicates. The Aztecs entered the fourth quarter with a 42-30 lead and held that lead until 3:42 left in the game, when Ryan Lindley completed a 42 yard touchdown pass to Dominique Sandifer to put the Aztecs up 49-30 late in the game. To add insult to injury, third-string running back Walter Kazee scored on a 25 yard touchdown run with under two minutes left in the game to make the final score 56-30 in favor of San Diego State, despite the Aggies being within striking distance until the final four minutes.
Defensively, both teams had their issues. Both teams surpassed 425 yards of offense and passed for over 275 yards. In fact, New Mexico State racked up 315 passing yards, a fact which could serve to expose the Aztecs secondary a bit.
Whatever the case, the Aztecs move to 2-0 on the season and will take on Missouri next week on the road. Missouri will prove to be a tough task, particularly because Blain Gabbert and the Tigers' spread offense loves to throw the ball around the yard. If San Diego State's secondary fails to show up again, Missouri will win in a rout.
