29 and Tryin' | Coach Hansen

Hello folks, thanks for giving this thread a look. This franchise will follow Basketball coach Noah Hansen, as he tries to establish himself as an NCAA coach.

After highschool, Hansen, instead of playing basetball in college, started coaching a local highschool team at the age of 19. Using his 6'6" frame to make himself seem older than he was, he quickly became a phenom of coaching in his hometown of Minneapolis. He lead Watershed high school to a state appearance at the age of 22. By age 27, he had coached Watershed to two state tourny appearances, and De La Salle Highschool to three 20+ win seasons. At 28 he was offered the assistant coaching job at NJIT. The team started out to a 2-19 record, with the coach being fired, and Hansen being named interim coach. Hansen took the reins and whipped the team into shape, as they finished 9-19, with a 7 game win streak to conclude the season.

Hansen recieved a few small school job offers after the season, and after much thought, decided to accept a 3 year contract with Kennesaw St.

And thats where the story starts....

    -----Kennesaw State Owls-----

    A picture of Kennesaw, GA

Kennesaw State is a public university in Kennesaw Georgia, located 20 miles north of Atlanta, in a mountainous region. The mens basketball team has not been nearly as serene and pictureasque as the Georgia Mountains that suround the campus. The last winning season this team had, was in 2004 when the Owls won the Division II National Championship game, on their home court. Since then, it has been an ugly fall from grace, ammassing a 55-97 record over 5 years since joining the ranks of Division I hoops. They have yet to register a winning season, and have recorded just one season with over 10 conference wins, ammasing a 10-30 conference record over the last two seasons.

In August of 2010, The Owls were hit in the gut when one of the teams all time point leaders Shuan Stegall, who played from 2004-2008, was killed when he sacrificed his life to save his father from two gunman.

Kennesaw has seen attendence rates dip as low as 500 fans per game, and has seen its once great basketball program be obliterated into a shell of its former self. Now Coach Hansen has come to take the reighns and lead the Owls to respect in the D1 ranks.

    -----The Team----

PG- Tasmin Schwartz- 5'11", 180lbs, 72 Overall, Senior
Schwartz could be a make or break for this team. Either he will be the quick, sure shot guard that Coach Hansen needs to run his uptempto offense, or Schwartz will be a turnover prone, mistake heavy player. Hansen desperatly needs Schwartz to be a solid played for his defensive style gameplan.

SG- Raoul Trammell- 6'3", 185lbs, 67 Overall, Senior
Trammell is coming back as a starter for the third year, he has averaged 9.8 PPG so far in his career, and in Hansens heavy defense/fastbreak style gameplan, Tremmell has an opprotunity to shine. He's not much from downtown, but he can hit open shots and make free throws.

SF- Gregg Bouma- 6'7", 220lbs, 61 Overall, Junior
Bouma is a huge piece to the puzzle for Kennesaw State. He needs to manage enough offense to be an effective cog in the machine, but more importantly he needs to be a mainstay on the boards and a problem for other teams inside the box.

PF- Austin Bey- 6'7", 225lbs, 55 Overall, Freshman
One of two freshman starters, Bey is going to have to make some plays. Starting mainly because of his hieght and his ability to rebound, Bey will more than likely be a huge problem on offense.

    C- Trey Ballinger- 6'11", 220lbs, 52 Overall, Freshman
This guy is a twig. Tall and skinny, Ballinger is going to be used for one thing; rebounding. Not too many guys in the A-Sun conference can rival his hieght, and if he can find a way to unleash some blocks here and there, he could be a very effective player for Hansen.

    ______________BENCH________________

SG- Deji Smalls- 6'3", 195lbs, 66 Overall, Sophomore
Smalls is not a great shooter, but he showed in his Freshman campaign that he can score. He is gunna be a player that Hansen must focus on developing if Kennesaw is too have any future.

SG- Harvey Ewing- 6'4", 185lbs, 66 Overall, Junior
The teams designated marksman, Ewing has the most game from downtown of anybody on the roster, and this will be exposed as the season goes on. Ewing is looking at a starting spot for next season, but he needs to beat out Smalls for the spot.

    SF- Kerwin O'Brian- 6'5", 210lbs, 55 Overall, Freshman
The dropoff for the bench is pretty steep. O'Brian will most likely share time as the spell SF with Ewing, but he is going to have to make an impact. Another one of the players that Hansen needs to develop, O'Brian needs to hit a growth spurt.

SF- Sheray Alpay- 6'6", 215lbs, 55 overall, Freshman
Alpay will more than likely be the backup PF and will probably get a lot of playing time, splitting court time with the other Freshman, Bey.

PF- Lanny Borges- 6'7", 215lbs, 53 overall, Freshman
See the trend? This is a super young team, and Borges is another one of those young guys who needs to step up and take advantage of his playing time. Borges will be entrusted with the 5 spot when Ballinger is off the court, and he needs to be able to haul down rebounds when asked.

    C- Kason Granger- 7'1", 220lbs, 52 overall, Freshman
Granger is tall and skinny and raw and probably won't get much playing time, as his showing at midnight madness was pretty poor.

PF- Perry Sessoms- 6'9", 255lbs, 53 overall, Sophomore
Sessoms is a tall, built sophomore who might be asked to play some role playing minutes, but sadly will lose a lot of playing time to his freshman counterparts.

      ----The Philosophy----

Coach Hansen stresses one thing above all. Defense. When he first arrived at Kennesaw State, he let this be known. The whole first week of practices were grueling defensive camps. Hansen's mentality is too create shots off of the defenses stops. This means than Kennesaw will be a fast break heavy, smashmouth team.

"Our main goal is to clog passing lanes, confuse teams with unique zone schemes, and double team on the perimeter as often as we can. The inside players in this conference are weak enough to the point where we can bring guys from the paint to the perimeter to keep other teams guards off balance." Said Coach Hansen.

      When asked what his main goals coming into the season were, Hansen Replied with this;

"We need to be a competitive team, and by competitive I mean we need to win games. I would love to have a team full of flashy players, and tell them go out there and dunk it every time, and thats how we're gunna people in the stands, but thats not what we have. My job is to get people into the arena to watch the games, and winning games is the only way to do that."

      Official Goals:
      • Win at least %50 of our games
      • Win at least 12 conference games
      • Win the Tyler Oglusby Tournament

(My first few game reports are gunna be choppy 'cus I'm already a ways through the season.)

          Kennesaw St- 67
          Stony Brook- 59

Noah Hansen started his coaching career off on the right note with a solid victory over Stony Brook. At time Kennesaw struggled to find its offensive groove, but PG Tas Schwartz scored 20 points, while Greg Bouma and Deji Smalls each added 10 points. The Freshman center Ballinger reeled in 12 rebounds while scoring 6 points.

          Kennesaw Top Players:

          Tasmin Schwartz- 20 points, 3 reb, 3 ast, 5 stl, 8/17 FGs, 2/5 FTs

            1-0 Kennesaw State- 58
            0-0 Princeton- 48

This game was actually a lot closer than the score depicted, with both teams battling back and forth for most of the game. Kennesaw really struggled offensively, shooting 25/63 from the field, and just 5/12 from the free throw line. Raoul Trammell lead the Owl's in scoring with 20 points on a paltry 9/23 shooting display. Bouma and Smalls each scored 11, and Sheray Alspay lead the team with 4 rebounds. Ballinger had a dissapointing follow up to his freshman debut with just 3 rebounds and a pair of blocks.

            Kennesaw Top Players:

            Raoul Trammell- 20 points, 3 reb, 6 stl, 9/23 FGs, 1/4 3pts, 1/4 FTs
Greg Bouma- 11 points, 3 ast, 4 stl, 5/9 FGs
            Deji Smalls- 11 points, 2 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl, 4/11 FGs

              2-0 Kennesaw State- 49
              0-3 W. Kentucky- 51

This game was a huge dissapointment for the Owl's, a game they let slip away in the final seconds. The game was hard fought with both teams struggling for control right down to the final possession. The Owl's had the ball with less than 15 seconds to go and the score tied at 49. However a costly turnover resulted in a fast break for WKU, which in turn resulted in an and one opprotunity for WKU with 1.4 seconds left. The free throw would be missed and Kennesaw would get the ball back with .9 left. The Owl's would use an inbound and timeout manouver to get the ball within range of a shot with .7 seconds left. The inbound pass went to Trammell who would miss a three attempt to end the game. The Owl's poor free throw shooting bit them in this one, as they shot a horrid 7/20 from the discount line.

              Kennesaw Top Players:

              Gregg Bouma- 10 points, 3 reb, 3 ast, 4 stl, 5/11 FGs
Sheray Alpay- 9 points, 4 reb, 3 stl, 4/4 FGs
Trey Ballinger- 8 points, 12 reb, 3/9 FGs

                2-1 Kennesaw State- 73
                2-0 Saint Peters- 53

Kennesaw State finally knows what its like to have a decent basketball team. With the teams biggest win margin in 6 years, the Owl's dismantled Saint Peters in the first round of the Columbia Classic tournament. Gregg Bouma led the charge, literally, scoring easily on several fast breaks on his way to a season high for any Owl player, with 25 points. Harvey Ewing came off the bench for the first time this year and scored his first two points of the year... then he scored 17 more points on his way to a 19 points game. Ballinger scored 4 points and grabbed 5 boards.

                Kennesaw Top Players:

Gregg Bouma- 25 points, 6 reb, 4 stl, 12/17 FGs
                Harvey Ewing- 19 points, 2 ast, 4 stl, 5/16 FGs, 2/7 3pts
                Tasmin Schwartz- 6 points, 1 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl, 2/3 3pts

                  3-0 Columbia- 54
                  3-1 Kennesaw State- 53

Kennesaw State suffered yet another heart breaking loss as they dropped the championship game to Columbia in the Columbia Classic. Columbia got off to a 14-2 start, and never trailed in a game that Kennesaw should have won.
The Owl's looked flat coming out, however Raoul Trammell scored 13 points in the first 3:30 of the second half to get the Owl's back in the game and Gregg Bouma scored 11 second half points, but a series of late fouls and crazy shots came up just short. Tasmin Schwartz managed to hit a crazy three ball with 3.2 seconds left to make it 53 to 54, but the Owl's failed to get a foul on Columbia and the game ended there. The Owl's allowed Columbia to dominate the inside, which resulted in the Lion's sky high shooting (27 of 43).
Kennesaw was able to stay in the game via 18 points from beyond the three point line.

                  Kennesaw Top Players:

                    2-3 Florida International- 49

Kennesaw was able to rebound off the Columbia loss with a solid victory over FIU. The road was rocky to start for the Owl's falling behind early, trailing at halftime 30-29. However Raoul Trammell and Greg Bouma were able to kick in the offensive pressure again in the second half as the Owl's ran away with this one. Kennesaw is still struggling from the line however going 2 of 12 in this game.

It was another dissapointing performance from the Kennesaw State offense that cost them a game that coach Hansen say "they should have won". After falling behind 25-13 early on, the team struggled to put together any points, shooting just .292 from the field. The team made a late surge, including a shot to win the game on the last shot of the game, but fell short, as Harvey Ewings three ball went in and out as the buzzer blared.

"We played a terrible game. No inside presence, no fire, we played with our heads and arms down, we played like we were beat up." said coach Noah Hansen.

After the game, audible yelling could be heard from the Owl's locker room. The Owl's drop to a 4-3 record now with the loss.

                              0-5 Stetson- 54
                              4-3 Kennesaw State- 75

Coach Hansen let the media know after mondays embaressing loss, that his team would look different the next time out. It did. The same Kennesaw State team that could't hit a shot to save its life earlier in the week, put on a brilliant showing, shooting 61% (33 of 54). Point Guard Tasmin Schwartz racked up 11 assists, most going to Harvey Ewing, who had a game high 23 points. Gregg Bouma did his usual work in the transition game, scoring 19 points off of 5 steals. Trey Ballinger held down the inside with 8 points and 7 rebounds, but failed to record a block. Sheray Alpay even got in on the act, scoring 9 points on 3/3 shooting, including 2/2 from 3 point range and another 3 point play off of an and-one play.

"We played good basketball tonight, we created points off of the defense's work and we hit shots. The only thing I was dissapointed in was rebounding." Said Coach Hansen

The Owl's recorded just 20 rebounds in the game, giving up 7 offensive boards to Stetson.
