Top 10 Safeties, according to ESPN.com

ESPN.com's NFL writers rank the top 10 safeties in the league today. Next week: top 10 owners. When it comes to rating NFL safeties, there's Troy Polamalu and Ed Reed followed by a huge gap before everyone else.

I think this is a very interesting debate after 1 and 2, personally I thought Berry was good last season, but I didn't think he was all of a sudden a top 5 safety just yet

I believe Ed Reed is hands down number 1. I agree with the rest of the top 4 but Rolle, Landry, Meriweather, and Bethea should be 5,6,7,8 how ever you wanna flip them in from of Berry, Griffin, and Whittner(What??),

I agree with the Top 4.

I think 5,6,7,8 Spots are a little bit more debatable.

I admit I didn't see any of Berry, but the one game I did catch of him (BAL @ KC Wild Card round this past season), he impressed me. I could clearly tell where he was on the field. I believe they aren't far off the mark when they say he (& Earl Thomas) will be the next dominant safety after Polamalu and Reed hang 'em up.

It's really not fair, though. #1 and #2 are pretty much all-time greats already. Tough to say any of the safeties out there currently will ever reach that level.

Even as a Steeler fan I can say I wouldn't be mad if Ed was one and Troy is two. I think as long as you have them ranked as the top two, you got it right

Meriweather should not be on any list rating good safeties. He's pretty average, and he got benched at the beginning of last season.

Edit: As I look at the rest of the list, there aren't a whole lot of impact players after the top 5 or 6.

If Eric Berry is a top five safety, the NFL is extremely weak in the safety department. Not to say I don't think he could get there, I do, but he made way too many mistakes last year for me to call him a top 5 safety at this point.

Ed should have been number one and won DMVP.

With that said, lol at Antrelle Rolle making this list.

Got no issues with the Top 5 but like others have said, everything after is debatable.

I feel Atogwe belongs in the bottom half of the top 10.

I get a feeling Malcolm Jenkins could be up there in these rankings in a year or 2

Not too bitter than TJ Ward didn't get a vote. Give him another year, though, and he'll be up there.

After #4 there isn't a single guy I would take over Eric Weddle.

                            Merriweather and Griffin are awful.

Thats definitely your opinion.. There's nobody in that top 15 I would take weddle over but you have to represent your team. I guess its nothing wrong with that because I feel Phillips will eventually become a Top 10-15 safety but he hasn't proved it yet.
