Valkyrie Ready for Kansas State
Saturday afternoon marks the beginning of the 2011-2012 football season for the Marauders as they begin their season hosting Kansas State. This will be the first test of a tough non-conference schedule for Valkyrie before they open up play in their new conference, the ACC.
"These first games will definitely get us ready for the ACC," Coach Erikssen remarked. "Kansas State is a tough team, even though they have fallen an hard times of late. Their quarterback is very mobile and can beat us with his arm or legs. They have big, physical receivers and can push us around if we're not careful."
Kansas State is coming off a sub-par season last year where tough breaks lead to many losses. This season, the Wildcats are looking to change their fortunes as they have eyes for Big XII North crown. With Nebraska departed for the B1G, the Wildcats are expected to contend for the title with Missouri.
While Valkyrie has lower expectations having moved into the ACC, they are still looking to pillage their way to the top.
"We want to win," halfback Adam Christian remarked. "We're working hard everyday to get this new system down and it's paying off in practice. Even though we run an old-school offense, we're ready to confound our opponents. K-State is just one of many steps on our way to the top."
The confidence of the offense will only get them so far. They need to execute against bigger opponents as the offensive line is one of the smallest at the FBS level. On the defensive side, the same is true as this is an undersized team.
"We make up for our lack of size with quickness and tenacity," outside linebacker Jeremy Stanford boasted. "There may be a hole opened up for a split-second but we close them fast and we fly to the ball. We've been hitting it hard in practice and we get a group of crimson to the ball as it gets there."
Without a doubt, Valkyrie is going to come to play every week. The Marauders start their 2011-2012 campaign for glory this Saturday at Valhalla Stadium with a 1:30 kickoff time. We hope to see you there cheering on the mighty Marauders.
