Sabercat Weekly

Red River Ready to Begin Season

With the schedule released and camp closing up, the Red River Sabercats are ready to begin their season. They are looking to build on their sensational season last year after going 10-3 with an upsetting last-second loss in the Hawaii Bowl. But in building on the success of last year, Coach Nicholls will need to replace several key starters who have graduated. Plus Coach Nicholls will have to fill the shoes of his predecessor who, after the memorable season, bolted to become the offensive coordinator at South Florida.

The toughest game on the schedule is the trip to Death Valley to face #4-ranked LSU in the middle of the season. The Sabercats start off with a pair of in-state rivals, Texas A&M and Texas Tech in the "Panhandle Shootout."

Looking forward at the season, the Sabercats underclassmen are going to have to step up for any kind of success. Only four key players remain from last year's squad while the rest of the remaining upperclassmen saw little action on the field.

"We're not worried about our youth," freshman halfback Colt Heathers remarked. "That just means were still in our prime. But honestly though, we're ready for the season. We had a great camp and now we're ready to show that last year wasn't a fluke."

For that to be true, these young players need to play above their experience. The C-USA has a lot of under-the-radar talent and the Sabercats need to be ready for it.

Marauder Press

Marauders Season ready to Start

The Marauder Athletic Department released the 2011-2012 football schedule earlier in the week. Valkyrie has an opening week date with the Wildcats from Kansas State, then meetings with Del Ray, #6-ranked Ohio State, and UConn before jumping into ACC play against front-runner Miami.

The name Soren Erikssen may be familiar with Marauder fans. He was the quarterback of the last Valkyrie team to win a championship. In 1991, the Marauders won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference under his lead. Now Erikssen returns to coach his alma mater.

"I'm grateful for the Athletic Director and the school President to give me this shot," Coach Erikssen responded. "I'm looking forward to leading this team to another championship, this time as coach."

With Valkyrie having moved up the food chain to the Football Bowl Subdivision, and now replacing Maryland in the ACC, Coach Erikssen has his work cut out for him.

"Coach is good," halfback Adam Christian remarked. "He's a throwback style coach. It took us a few weeks to get the hang of the flexbone/veer-style offense but we are running it like the service academies do."

Coach Erikssen brought back the old three-back sets he played under during his tenure as a quarterback.

Quarterback Steven Whitaker added, "Coach has been a wealth of knowledge for me and the option. I ran the option very little in high school as most of runs were either to the back or designed QB runs. But after working with him for a few days, reading the option man has become easier."

Defensively, Valkyrie has to replace nearly everyone. Coach Erikssen and his defensive coaches have to work with a quick but very under-sized defense.

"We have a fast defense," Coach Erikssen commented. "Because of our size, we have to fly to the ball on 'D' or else we'll get punished. So you'll be seeing quite a few crimson jerseys around the ball."

The Marauders will have to be on top of their game come the start of the season. They start strong and then finish with a tough road through the ACC. Can Coach Erikssen work his magic one again, this time from the sidelines?

Shark Bites

Del Ray Ready for 2011-2012 Season, SEC

Del Ray made a move in the off-season to boost their program. They jumped on the opportunity to move into the SEC East. There they find themselves in the middle of a top conference.

With the move into the SEC, the Sharks also ushered in a new coach. Joe Moore takes over for the retired David Johnson. With Moore, he brings in a new staff as well as new offensive and defensive schemes.

"I come from Texas and we love to throw the ball," Coach Moore imparted. "I'll throw it on any down and pretty much any time really. Our wide receiver core is very deep and our quarterbacks have some cannons. That's the best way to utilize that strength. On defense, the skill set of our players lends it to a 3-4 defense. But don't be surprised to possibly see a little mix in there as we sub around some personnel."

With the move into the SEC, the Del Ray players, defense especially, will need that rest during the grueling season. With the likes for Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee on their schedule, grueling seems like an understatement.

"We're ready for the challenge of SEC football," Coach Moore responded. "Our players are pumped up for the season and we're ready to go."

Del Ray has a date with UCLA to Kickoff Weekend before facing Valkyrie in a clash of offensive styles. Valkyrie has been reported to have switched to an option run offense while Del Ray is eager to pass every down. After two weeks off, the Sharks host Louisiana Tech before opening up SEC play with Mississippi State.

Roar of the Pride

So Long Sun Belt, Hello C-USA and 2011-2012 Season

The Smoky Mountain State Athletic Department released their 2011-2012 football schedule recently. Much has been made about the step up the Pride made by moving to the C-USA East from the Sun Belt. While the Pride was a contending team in the Sun Belt, we have yet to see if that will transfer to a higher level.

The Pride open their season with a tough road game against a quality BCS opponent in Louisville. Traveling to BYU is their other marquee game on this year's schedule.

Another off-season move made was the promotion of Caleb Vincent from Offensive Coordinator to Head Coach. Vincent has history with the school. He was a wide receiver and had a prominent role on special teams here during his playing days before becoming a Graduate Assistant, then Receivers Coach, Special Teams Coach, and finally Offensive Coordinator/Asst Head Coach.

"I grew up with this school," Coach Vincent remarked. "When I was a kid I dreamed of playing here and that came true. After I was finished playing here I wanted to coach here and now I have reached that pinnacle of my time with this school."

Coach Vincent will have his hands full as he loses sixteen starters and a handful of key players to graduation. On the brighter side, a great crop of new talent has arrived to replace the graduated seniors. Success with this new talent is right around the corner, if not already here.

Coach Vincent has been mum on who will start. In the annual Smoky Mountain State BBQ Classic (for you incoming freshman, that's the inter-squad scrimmage and BBQ cook-off held at the end of camp where you can watch a game and eat some of the best BBQ around), many players rotated around with the first team.

"We had a good showing at our classic," Coach Vincent responded. "Us coaches are going to sit down and review the films to see who will take the field to start the season. But with how well a lot of them did, it looks as if we have plenty of depth to our team so we can easily sub around players to get good match-ups on both sides."

Smoky Mountain State has a promising outlook. With the talent they have, a run at the C-USA East title is not a stretch for this season and a good chance in the near future.

College Football Live

Kickoff Weekend Arrives

ESPN - This weekend marks the kickoff of the 2011-2012 college football season. In the off-season, many of the conferences were reshuffled and the Mountain West Conference garnered a probationary BCS berth to any of the BCS bowls. Lately rumors have been spreading that if the Mountain West exceeds the high standards of the BCS committee, the Big east may lose their automatic-qualifying berth. The BCS has been quiet on these rumors except to release a statement saying that they "will evaluate BCS automatic-qualifying berths at the conclusion of the season."

As we move from the off-season to the current outlook, we have a slate of games on tap for this weekend. But before we get into previewing this week, let's take a look forward at some games that can have huge implications.

Week Two

TCU at West Virginia
Hawaii at Boise State

The TCU and West Virginia game is an early-season match-up of the two teams from conferences with a BCS berth on the line. The winner of this game can make a statement that the other does not belong at the BCS table.

Hawaii and Boise State meet up and a clash of MWC powers. Hawaii is on the rise while Boise State's performance of late has earned the MWC a chance to step up with the BCS big boys. It also may be a possible preview of the inaugural MWC Championship game in Denver, CO

Week Four

Miami at Clemson
Stanford at Auburn
Mississippi State at LSU
Boise State at Florida State

Both the Miami/Clemson game and the Mississippi State/LSU game provide an early look into how the SEC West can shake up and also the ACC. LSU is an early favorite in the SEC West but Mississippi State has put together a solid effort last season and looks to build on it.

Stanford/Auburn and Boise State/Florida State are are marquee match-ups between BCS conferences. Stanford had an amazing run last season and are looking to continue climbing. Auburn has to rebuild some but there were deep last year and now that depth is at the top of the charts. For Boise State, they have another chance to showcase their skills on the national level as they face off with Florida State, another team bent on returning to glory.

Week Five

Iowa at Ohio State
South Carolina at Virginia Tech
TCU at Nevada
Florida State at Clemson

Iowa/Ohio State and Florida State/Clemson are both divisional battles that could shape the standings. TCU and Nevada are in the same boat. Last season, Nevada knocked off Boise State, can they do that here against TCU to gain control of the MWC South? South Carolina and Virginia Tech is another highly-ranked battle of BCS conference teams.

Week Six

Boise State at Nevada

Boise State has a chance for revenge here in this match-up. Plus they also have the opportunity to put a crimp into Nevada's MWC South title hopes. Or this game could be a preview of the MWC Championship game should Nevada get by TCU the previous week.

Week Seven

Texas at Oklahoma in Dallas
Fresno State at Boise State
Miami at Virginia Tech

The Red River Shootout is always a classic game and sets the stage for the eventual Big XII South Champion. Even though Texas A&M and Oklahoma State are on the rise, the Big XII South is all Texas and Oklahoma.

Boise State has one more tough conference opponent in Fresno State on their way to a MWC North title. Should Boise get to this point unscathed, a win here will mostly assure them of a spot in the title game.

Miami and Virginia Tech marks a huge ACC battle that can damage the title hopes of the losing team.

Week Ten

Boise State at Cincinnati
Ohio State at Wisconsin
Nebraska at Michigan State

Boise State and Cincy is another MWC/Big East battle for bragging rights and an inside track to the BCS AQ slot. This is a save-face/nail-in-the-coffin game of marquee conference teams fighting for the BCS AQ berth at the end of the season.

Ohio State/Wisconsin and Nebraska/Michigan State are two of the big B1G match-ups of potential title contenders. A loss here could dash the hopes of a B1G title for any of these four schools.

Week Eleven

Alabama at LSU

This is a game for the SEC West crown. Both schools are talented and deep and being ranked at #2 and #4 respectively at the start of the season is no fluke.

Week Twelve

Oregon at Stanford
LSU at Notre Dame
Washington State at Boise State
Penn State at Nebraska
Florida State at Miami

LSU and Notre Dame is a rematch of the 2007 Sugar Bowl and a tough test for the Irish on the big stage. This is also the second tough game for LSU in a row as the head to the cold of South Bend.

Washington State is the last team to come close to the talent of Boise State and it should be an easy hurdle for the Broncos to get passed on their way to the MWC title game.

Oregon/Stanford, Penn State/Nebraska, and Florida State/Miami all have divisional title implications. The winner of Oregon/Stanford would have in inside track to the Pac-12 North. In-state rivals Florida State and Miami square off in a game to decide the ACC Atlantic while Penn State and Nebraska fight for control in the B1G.

Week Thirteen

Oklahoma at Oklahoma State
Penn State at Ohio State
Notre Dame at Texas

Bedlam in Oklahoma is Oklahoma's final hurdle to a possible Big XII South title, Big XII title, and possibly national title shot. Should Oklahoma defeat Texas, this game has a lot of meaning but an early loss to Texas could render this game to state bragging rights.

Another B1G power match-up pits Ohio State hosting Penn State. At this point both teams could be in the hunt or left out to dry by the time they meet in this game. Either way, both schools play each other hard and tough.

Notre Dame faces another top opponent in traveling to Austin to face the Longhorns. If Notre Dame has improved under this new system, this would be a good game to see as both schools are powers in the midst of making a small rebuilding effort.

Week Fourteen

Arkansas at LSU
Hawaii at TCU
Notre Dame at Stanford
Ohio State at Michigan
Auburn at Alabama
Iowa at Nebraska
Wisconsin at Penn State

It's rivalry week for some major schools as these games draw a great deal of interest. Hawaii and TCU could be in the midst of a showdown for the MWC South title and a potential shot at Boise State in the North.

Stanford marks Notre Dame's third top opponent in as many weeks. Stanford could be in line for a national title shot after having defeated Oregon earlier in the season but if not, this would be another classic rivalry game.

Games in the B1G mark either divisional titles or a hated rivalry. With the top seven teams in the conference so close, a great deal could be riding on these match-ups.

Week Fifteen brings us the conference championship games. For two of these conference championships, a national title hope is alive. This singular week can make or break a team's success for the season as a handful of top teams can come into this week undefeated. The other notable game this week is Army and Navy. Every year these academies meet and give every one a great showing on the field and a glimpse at some future leaders of America.

Looking forward to this weekend, #5-ranked Oregon hosts Algonac Friday night in the Kick-Off Classic. Oregon returns many key starters from last season's team and they are looking to finish the deal this season. Algonac is their first step to completing that task.

Action on Saturday includes Del Ray hosting UCLA in the early game. Our mid-afternoon games include Boston College at #2-ranked Alabama, Valkyrie hosts Kansas State, and North Texas is at Vanderbilt to open C-USA play. In the early evening, Hawaii hosts #25-ranked Arizona State in what should be an aerial showcase and Colorado travels to Florida to face the U. The late games this weekend pit Idaho at #14-ranked TCU, Nevada at top-tanked Oklahoma, and #11-ranked Wisconsin at Cal. Western Kentucky hosts Colorado State on Sunday evening to close out the Kick-Off Weekend.

Each one of these games should be fairly exciting as football fills the airwaves once again. Stay with us as we broadcast every game this weekend in high-definition. Check your local listing for channel and game information.

ESPN College Gameday

College Football Kicks Off Tonight with #5 Oregon, Algonac

ESPN - What a way to open the 2011-2012 College Football season with last year's runner-up and current #5-rank Oregon Ducks at home in the Autzen Zoo against the Algonac Warriors.

Oregon returns the backfield tandem in Washington and Roberson from last year's squad and they are looking to finish the deal this season. We had a chance to talk with Roberson before the game about this year's team and their chances.

"We return a lot of key players this year," Roberson remarked. "We're fired up to go all the way this year but we're only going to take it one game at a time. We have a target on our backs and if we overlook someone, we can falter."

The #5-ranked Ducks are an odds-on favorite to win the Pac-12 this season and contend for the National Championship once more. The first step towards the road to the championship begins here for the Ducks as they host Algonac.

Algonac is a bit of a stranger to high-profile games like this. Playing in The Autzen Zoo is quite an introduction to the big time. The Warriors boast a very young and inexperienced team with a rookie head coach.

This past off-season, Bryan Payne stepped in to take over the coaching duties. Payne is no stranger to coaching though as his father is a legend at nearby New Holland University. Payne also brought in his older brother to coach the defense and his brother-in-law leads the has the offensive coaching duties. Before the game we caught up with Coach Payne to discuss opening up his head coaching career against a prime opponent in one of the toughest, if not the toughest, place to play.

"Autzen Stadium is loud," Payne spoke. "We had our A/V department pumping music and crowd noises all practice long in preparation for this game. Hopefully we can limit our mental errors from the crowd noise and focus on our gameplan."

In response to questions about Heisman-hopeful Roberson, Coach Payne added, "We have no athlete on our team who can compare to his athleticism. He can go through you or around you. If he gets a hole and turns it upfield, he's gone. We worked this week on trying to corral him defensively. Whether we are able to do that is about to be seen."

Roberson is not the only worry the Warriors have on defense. Washington can run as well so keying on Roberson can leave Washington open to run. This could turn into a very ugly game for the Warriors if they aren't careful.

This leads us to the keys of the game. Will start with Oregon first.

Key One: The spread-option. Oregon has shown the nation how the spread-option works. Simply put, the Ducks just need to execute this well today and they will see victory.

Key Two: Oregon's defense needs to step up to stop the run. Algonac has a pair of good halfbacks who complement each other in Paisley and Simpson. Douglas, the fullback, and also quarterback Hargrove can see some carries as well in this downhill rushing offense.

Key Three: Pass defense. Algonac has some physical receivers who aren't afraid to go over the middle. These corners and safeties for Oregon need to play tight to the receivers and not get out-muscled for the ball.

Algonac's keys to victory are simple.

Key One: Contain Roberson and Washington. This will be a tough task for the Warrior defense as both players has breakout speed and great vision to find seams in the defense. They can't key on one without getting burned by the other.

Key Two: On offense, Algonac needs to control the clock with their running game. By chewing up ground and clock on long possessions, they can limit the high-tempo Duck offense.

Key Three: Crowd noise. The Warriors have never been in an environment like the Autzen Zoo. Many quarterbacks in the past have had issues with checking off at the line and with snap counts. False starts and missed audibles are a common issue many teams face when they come in here. Algonac is no different in that regard and they need to focus on their task at hand without letting the crowd take them out of sync.

With our keys to victory covered, we'll now see how our experts see this game playing out.

Chris Fowler: With Roberson and Washington in the backfield, Algonac has no answer for them. This game will get ugly fast for the Warriors as there is no way to really prepare for this spread-option attack and the crowd. Oregon 42, Algonac 10.

Desmond Howard: That's right Chris. I see both Washington and Roberson having a field day out here while the Warriors are out of it by the first quarter. Oregon 48, Algonac 7

Kirk Herbstreit: This spread-option attack for Oregon is so potent, it's just scary. Roberson is a breakaway back who can find seams in the running game, he's dangerous out of the backfield as a receiver. If you send eight or nine in the box to counter the run, you leave so much room still for the offense. Oregon runs away with this one, 56-10.

Lee Corso: It's an easy decision here, sweetheart. Oregon has too many weapons on offense and there's no way to tell who is going to get the ball and when. Key on Roberson and Washington runs or passes around you. Key on Washington, Roberson has a field day. Oregon takes home an easy win in their opener 55-14.

And now we'll head inside the stadium as we get ready to kick off the season with #5-ranked Oregon hosting the Algonac Warriors.

Re: A 12-team Teambuilder Dynasty

The Battle Cry

Warriors Knock Out Roberson, Steal Game

Eugene, OR - The #5-ranked Ducks had high hopes for the season coming into the opening game with the Warriors. All was shattered as Roberson lay on the turf after a big hit from linebacker Trace Britt. On this occasion, Roberson left the game with what is listed as a concussion. This would be Roberson's second time being sent to the sidelines. Roberson left for a pair of possessions in the third with a shoulder injury.

With Roberson on the sidelines in the third quarter, Algonac forced two quick Oregon possessions to turn a close game into a big lead.

"When Roberson went to the sidelines in the third," linebacker Chase Dodd remarked, "Coach told us to take advantage of it."

Take advantage they did. Without Roberson in the backfield, the Warrior defense was able to pin their ears back and come after Washington. This resulted in two sacks and 1-for-4 on passes for just three yards.

"You hate to see a player go down like that," Coach Payne remarked after the win, "but I hope he's able to return soon. He's a tremendous athlete and he showed it with his two long runs."

In a game that started slowly, Algonac took a 3-0 lead on a 42-yard field goal by Heath Adkins late in the first quarter for the only points in the opening frame. Algonac could have had more, but the Duck defense made a critical early redzone stop on Paisley to keep the game scoreless.

Oregon would come back to tie it with a 47-yard field goal of their own on the next possession with over twelve minutes in the half. Roberson would handle most of the workload on the four-plus minute drive that took eight plays to go fifty yards.

The second would continue as slow as the first until the final minute of the quarter. With just under a minute, Hargrove would dump it off to Paisley on the screen pass where Paisley followed his blockers in for the touchdown, giving the Warriors a 10-3 lead.

Photobucket

After a Washington scramble was stuffed after a yard, Roberson would show why he was a Heisman candidate. Roberson caught a block and found a seam where he exploded for a 79-yard touchdown run with only :36 left on the clock.

Photobucket

Hargrove would take over at his 33-yard line after a decent return and move the ball 47 yards in three plays to give Adkins a chance to nail the second 47-yard field goal of the quarter as time expired.

To start the second half, Hargrove would lead the Warriors on a 14-play, 80-yard drive chewing up just under six minutes to put the Warriors ahead 20-10. Paisley found the endzone once again, this time on the ground from a yard out.

Then the wheels fell off of Oregon's offense. On their first play of the half, Roberson was tackled hard after an eleven-yard gain. He got up favoring his arm and was whisked off to the locker room.

Algonac used this to their advantage as the defense became very aggressive, sacking Washington on the next play and forcing two errant throws. Hargrove and the offense took full advantage of the shorter field to add ten more points to their total on a fifteen-yard pass to halfback Brad Simpson and Adkins' third field goal, this one from 56 yards out.

Photobucket

Hargrove takes a hit as he dumps off to Simpson for the TD pass

With under a minute left in the third, Roberson would return to the game. After another Washington sack, pushing the Duck offense inside their own ten, Roberson would break through a pair of tacklers on his way to a 93-yard touchdown run. This would bring the Ducks back to a 30-17 deficit heading into the fourth quarter.

Early in the fourth, the Ducks would have another chance to pull closer, taking over near midfield. Roberson would take the dump-off pass from Washington and as he turned upfield, he was met by Britt. Roberson was helped off the field and remained on the sidelines with what was determined to be a concussion. He will be evaluated this week and his time away from the field is undetermined at this time.

The Warriors would add a field goal and Hargrove would put the game out of reach with a fifteen-yard touchdown pass to Lambert with under five minutes left.

Photobucket

To seal the win, Kyle Fields and Brett Weaver made key interceptions of Washington on forced passes. These two interceptions came on consecutive possessions for Oregon in the final minutes of the game.

Roberson was the main key for the Ducks in this game as he rushed for 241 yards on 18 carries in less than three quarters of work. He also caught three passes for 24 yards in the loss.

Jeff Hargrove was named the player of the game after going 20/27 for 211 yards and 3 TDs. He also added 24 yards on five carries. Right behind him offensively, Eric Paisley carried the ball 27 times for 116 yards and a touchdown. Paisley also had a touchdown reception of eleven yards.

"It feels good to get the win against a great program like Oregon," Hargrove responded. "It's a shame that their back had to leave with an injury. Hopefully he gets healthy soon and maybe we'll meet again in a bowl game and we'll really see how this will play out."

Coach Payne also added after the game, "I'm proud of this team. They played hard and didn't give up. There are some things we need to work on. There's no way we should give up 241 yards rushing to one back but that kid is a Heisman front-runner for a reason. We're going to put this one behind us and focus on next week."

Next week, the Warriors open their home season with Syracuse coming in. Syracuse is coming off one of the better seasons they've had in a long time and they are looking to keep the momentum going.

Injury report: No injury news for the Warriors and everyone made it through the game without any major damage. Roberson is listed as week-to-week. He will be evaluated the coming week and his timetable for return set then.

Valkyrie Ready for Kansas State

Saturday afternoon marks the beginning of the 2011-2012 football season for the Marauders as they begin their season hosting Kansas State. This will be the first test of a tough non-conference schedule for Valkyrie before they open up play in their new conference, the ACC.

"These first games will definitely get us ready for the ACC," Coach Erikssen remarked. "Kansas State is a tough team, even though they have fallen an hard times of late. Their quarterback is very mobile and can beat us with his arm or legs. They have big, physical receivers and can push us around if we're not careful."

Kansas State is coming off a sub-par season last year where tough breaks lead to many losses. This season, the Wildcats are looking to change their fortunes as they have eyes for Big XII North crown. With Nebraska departed for the B1G, the Wildcats are expected to contend for the title with Missouri.

While Valkyrie has lower expectations having moved into the ACC, they are still looking to pillage their way to the top.

"We want to win," halfback Adam Christian remarked. "We're working hard everyday to get this new system down and it's paying off in practice. Even though we run an old-school offense, we're ready to confound our opponents. K-State is just one of many steps on our way to the top."

The confidence of the offense will only get them so far. They need to execute against bigger opponents as the offensive line is one of the smallest at the FBS level. On the defensive side, the same is true as this is an undersized team.

"We make up for our lack of size with quickness and tenacity," outside linebacker Jeremy Stanford boasted. "There may be a hole opened up for a split-second but we close them fast and we fly to the ball. We've been hitting it hard in practice and we get a group of crimson to the ball as it gets there."

Without a doubt, Valkyrie is going to come to play every week. The Marauders start their 2011-2012 campaign for glory this Saturday at Valhalla Stadium with a 1:30 kickoff time. We hope to see you there cheering on the mighty Marauders.
