    Was NBA 2k11 overrated?

In light of all the news coming out of 2k regarding 2k12, particularly in gameplay and game modes, is it fair to say NBA 2k11 was overrated? I mean, the game was pulling 9s and 10s everywhere, but surely if 2k12 is an improvement in so many different ways, that rating can't hold.

Admittedly, I do think that a lot of this is due to the way that the games are reviewed, in what is essentially after a day or two of playing, where the more prevalent gameplay/balance issues aren't as obvious, and I think this is always gonna be the case for video game reviews. So do you think, looking back at it now, that 2k11 deserved all the accolades it received?

Of course it deserved the ratings it got, you don't based ratings off future products.

My answer is a strong no. Lets not say because a company continues to vastly improve a game year in and year out that the product it put out in the past is not as good as it actually was.

NBA 2k11 was a fantastic game, I am sure most of us will say we've never spent even half the amount of time we spent on 2k11 that we did with any other sports games.

It is awesome that 2K sports doesn't save ideas for next year and puts everything they can into the game this year and when next year comes I have no doubt it will be an improvement.

When there are no major flaws it is easier to improve the game. They don't need to spend a year revamping modes or gameplay cause it was already solid. They can take time to add to the modes (mostly My player) and add new modes(online Association) rather than spending time trying to fix old problems.

How could a sports game franchise from the previous year be over rated because that same game improved the next year?

It's called natural progression. DeMar DeRozan wasn't over rated averaging 20 ppg last year after the All Star break just because he averaged 23 ppg this upcoming season.

Definitely not. I remember the months leading up to the release I was leaning towards Elite. Then I bought the game and I was hooked all the way until July and I have yet to play a next gen sports title that long. That game reminded me of the ps2 days when I would play games like Madden and MVP until the new one came out. It was that good. I look forward to 2k12 just thinking about all the time I spent playing 2k11.

P.S. Just like the guy above Derozan was my favorite player to build a team around. Dude was a constant highlight real and had super wet jumper. He may have not had the defense attributes but he was athletic he made plenty defensive plays.

                  Re: Was NBA 2k11 overrated?

Hmm, perhaps I worded my initial post awkwardly, but I will address some of the points you guys have raised (rather quickly too, at that!). But don't misunderstand: I'm not asking was 2k11 a good game, I don't think anyone's going to deny that. I'm asking was 2k11 a good a game as the reviews and accolades would have you believe, now that we're at the junction where we're moving onto 2k12.

                  - I don't buy that 5.5 million sales means it warrants it being appropriately rated; it faced no competition this year, and I'd be much more interested in learning what proportion of those sales were early sales compared to mid-to-late sales in the product life cycle. A good positive review and good initial hype will generate sales in their own accord; case in point, I've bought 2k on launch day for the past 5 years now. Admittedly, this won't account for all of the sales though, but the reality is the only way sales would really get hampered is if the game bombed.

                  - I agree you don't base the ratings of a game on what the future incarnations will possess, which will invariably be improvements. However, at the same time, doesn't a game get a pass on simply being an improvement of a previous installment of the title? In essence, would any game get as high regard if it didn't have the failures of its predecessors to improve? Flaws only become apparent after prolonged playing of a game (unless its a really poorly designed game), hence why I am asking the question retrospectively.

                  - Michael Jordan didn't carry this game; the Jordan Challenges were actually, from a gameplay perspective, quite poorly designed, as time constraints and such basically required you to be a ballhog, which detracted from the greatness of the real thing. His addition carried a lot of fanfare, but in the end was more gimmick than a valuable addition (although I suppose it did evolve into the Legends Mode, which I am excited about).

I guess another way of asking it is a year from its release, now that we've played the game extensively and learnt the intricacies of its gameplay, what would you give it? I guess part of the problem is with how games are reviewed, where basically the worst you'll ever give anything is a 5. It leaves little space for differentiation at the top, since a 9.5 implies a near perfect game, which at this point in time, is not a title I am ready to give 2k11 after playing it through.

i dont think any sports game can be perfect bcuz sports in real life is so unpredictable and has so much emotion in it, something which a sports videogame can never emulate, but with that being said, there's always room for important bcuz they can always get closer to emulating the real thing

uts on bullet proof vest and hides behind an abandonded taxi: some what overrated cuz of jordan. people was saying best ever before they had even played. it was not perfect by any means. it was cool. the more i played the more flaws that began to annoy me. looking forward to 2k12 though.

seeing how some of the code was programed to not do certains things that everone on here painfully wants . 2k knew what they was doing when they programed certain things to cover up flaws, that may be corrected this time around hopefully. didnt play "my player" but i heard loots of people had problems.

                          no........

In my opinion, it is not overhyped at all. The game was amazing even with the so called bugs and glitches everyone seemed to find. The only problem I had with the game was with the draft when teams would select the same player every pick. Other than that, the game played great! I am mostly an offline gamer so that might be why I didn't have that many issues. It seems like the majority of people that had issues with the game were those that played online due to cheese moves.

I'm guessing EA, the makers of that wonderful hit, NBA Live (Elite?) or whatever it was called, didn't think 2k11 was overrated.

Revising the question to the perspective of "11 months later is this yearly sports title over rated?" doesn't make it any different. That's flat out an unfair way to judge a game that comes out every 12 months.

Under no circumstances is 2k11 over rated. There are certainly aspects that, after months upon months of playing through them become tiresome (ie. psychic pass lane steals), but it doesn't amount to the game being over rated at the time of its release.

                              Period!
