This game was a crazy back and forth affair as the Rockies ended up taking this thing in a wacky turn of events. The Rockies jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a Gonzalez homer and a Rosario RBI single in the 1st two innings. But the Padres scored 5 unanswered runs off Christian Friedrich in his first start of the season. Friedrich lasted 6 innings while allowing those 5 runs, but he looked pretty good outside of the horrid 6th inning he experienced. Anthony Bass took the ball for the Padres and pitched 7 innings of three run baseball which would have been good enough for a win if the pen hadn't imploded. Gregerson gets handed the loss in this game, but if it weren't for the dropped CarGo popup...the two out grand slam wouldn't have ever happened and the Padres would have won the game. But Tulowitzki worked his magic and willed the Rockies to victory in their home opener.

Wow, Michael Cuddyer was definitely the player of the game in this one for me. He went 4-4, a homer short of the cycle with 3 RBIs and this throw he made in the 9th inning ended the game as he nailed Alonso at the plate to finish it. Chris Volstad pitched a pretty solid 6 innings of 3 run ball for me enroute to his first victory of the season. Jeff Francis nailed down 3 innings of relief to pick up a save and things are looking up now that the Rocks are at home.

This loss hurts, not because JDR pitched 5 solid innings of 2 run ball (granted he was in and out of trouble the whole time, but that isn't the point) but more because of the way the Rockies lost. They lost via a squeeze bunt...a stinking suicide squeeze is how this epic game ended. Bochy definitely outsmarted us here because I was not expecting that at all. The offense did enough off Madison Bumgarner to knock him out, but not enough to power us past the defending World Champs, whose bullpen was spectacular in this game after Bumgarner left. The thing that killed us in this one were the 2nd inning homers by the Giants, since Sandoval and Pence hit hanging sliders a long long way. If JDR could have kept just one of those down, this game would have probably gone differently.

Vogelsong Masterpiece Silences Rocks in Series Finale

Vogelsong twirled himself a beautiful complete game, 7 hitter today in the series finale against Colorado. Vogelsong punched out 4 batters and gave up a lone run in the 8th inning when relief pitcher Jon Garland laced a double to the wall driving in Josh Rutledge. Christian Friedrich allowed 3 first inning runs to the Giants who pounced on him early, however he did settle into a grove and go 5 innings of 4 run baseball. The story today is definitely Vogelsong though, who at one point had retired 17 batters in a row before Rutledge singled off him in the 8th inning. The Rocks now head to San Diego to play the very same Padres who they slammed at Coors not even a week ago
