New to FIFA, new to Football/soccer. What should I know?

I've always been an NBA/NFL fan and never played soccer growing up as it isn't that popular in Kentucky. But I picked up FIFA 14 for Xbox One and I'm having a blast with it. The biggest problem is I'm completely inept with the rules, positions, terminology and basics of proper football. Any advice or tips or resources you guys could provide would be a huge help.

I don't know any players other than guys like Messi, Ronaldo and Donovan.

I've always been a GM/Owner mode player in other games... Where should I start here?

    Things to know:
Barclays Premier League in England is the most competitive league in the world.
The German Bundesliga has 5-6 top teams, but FC Bayern are by far the best.
The Italian Serie A is also a pretty competitive league, some quality teams there.
The French league has PSG who is by far the best, then a few other decent teams.
The Spanish League has 2 of the best teams in the world (Barcelona and Real Madrid) as well as 3-4 pretty good teams.

Start a manager mode, play with a 4-4 and a half star team to learn the game. I'd pick someone in the Premier League.

When i started I started with a League 2 team. i think it helped me big time.

      to the OP:
      1. there are no drafts. To get young players set up your youth academy scouts, they will scout for young players that you sign to your youth squad then promote when you feel they are ready (I believe 18 is the age limit though)
      2. If you're a lesser team, loans are your friend. You don't have to shell out any transfer costs and you only take on the player's salary.
      3. youtube fifa guide/tips, there are a ton of great videos out there. There is a german guy that I used to watch that has some good tips about what all the positions do and such (I forgot his username).

I was about to come in here and post a thread asking the same thing.
I have never understood the rules (Not on the field but the player stuff.. "Loaning" etc...)

Also how does everyone play the game? Do you just control 1 player? The auo switching on D alwasy gets me frustrated so I just lock ojnto 1 player...

Any suggestions on setting like that are appreciated.

I play with manual switching(go to controler options). I HATE auto switching so I just turn it off. Also I'm not that great playing as one player and the teammate AI is awful.

As far as transfers, loans ect.. there is a thread on here, not sure if its NG or reg forum but it's titled career mode and a few of us go into some detail in that thread.

EDIT: found the thread I was talking about.

Player movement in Soccer is a lot different than in American sports.

Players are almost never "traded". They are, however, bought and sold i.e. "transferred". In Fifa, you will have a pot of money to do your transfer business. This can be altered between contracts (the amount you use to pay your players) and transfer funds (the amount you use to purchase players from other teams).

You also have the option of loaning players in and out of your club. A loan allows you to send away or bring in a typically young player for them to gain experience playing with another team. This is usually done when a team wants a player to gain first team game experience and can't give that to a player in their current lineup. The team taking the player will pay the players salary (in Fifa always, in real life sometimes). For low level teams, this can be a great way to add talented players for a season.

                  Sure. Thank you!

For my career I created centre attack midfielder (seemed like I could get a good mix of offense and defensive). What are his roles? How should I play to maximize his abilities on the pitch? Should he really just play end to end (within midfield)? I'm completely new to soccer. Saw Man City smash a team last week, and for the first time it clicked. I had more fun playing skills games today than I've had in awhile in a sporting game.

How come a sliding tackle is a foul sometimes but others it isn't? When is this move appropriate?

I'll save my exhibition/full match questions for another time.

For an attacking midfielder you will primarily be an offensive player. Now, there are many ways you can approach the position but your main responsibility is to orchestrate the attack. Get the ball from the midfield and pass to the forwards or dribble forward yourself. Look to move into space to get the ball and have a chance to do something with it. I personally find it to be the most fun Fifa player career position because you can be on the ball a lot and be creative.

To make it simple, a slide tackle is a foul when you get the man before the ball. It is appropriate usually from side positions in fifa when you are just out of reach for a standing tackle and have some good momentum towards the player with the ball. It is much more difficult to retain posession with though in comparison to a standing tackle.

Spot on, most fun position on the pitch if you ask me. I always see passing as the number 1 stat to look for in a CAM. I see ozil as a prototype CAM personally

All good stuff here. I watched an online tutorial, and he said the standing tackle is worthless in this game (not necessarily in real life). He says to just use the contain button--I'm guessing this provides organic standing tackles? Idk what to think. I'll play a lot and see what works for me.

I will pull up some Ozil gameplay. Thanks for the name drop. I love to play point guard in basketball so it seems I made the best choice for my natural play style.

I've got the basic controls down. A little afraid to tackle dribbling. What moves do you think are rather basic yet effective, or should be a part of an average players arsenal.

Are there any YouTube guys you like?

I don't really know any good youtubers for gameplay tips tho. Haigeyorkie is worth a watch if your interested in CM or a laugh. Masterbucks is also good for this. I don't use too many skill moves, I always forget to use them in game haha probly should start though

I would highly suggest learning to play on all manual controls. Play on the lowest difficulty if you need to while getting your feet wet, but take it from a late comer to the series, learn to play the game on all manual if possible.

Just started doing this today and 3 games in I can see how much better it will be once I get the hang of it. I just went for passing on manual but shooting is still on assisted, how much harder is manual shooting and should I get use to the passing then do shooting? or just go straight into both?
