That's not how it works. Defensive assist is the AI helping control YOUR player, it doesn't affect your teammates at all. It'll, for instance, help you stick to your man, go after loose balls, contest shots, pick up the roll man on a PnR etc. It creates alot of warping, makes playing defense sluggish and less responsive, sometimes hinders smart D, prevents you from getting good position on the block to grab a rebound etc. I haven't removed it completely on my end because I'm currently starting at the 3 and it's a right chore to follow quick wings around with my 6'11" PF.
