Why Did EA Castrate Their Custom Classes

Key attributes are completely below what is acceptable for a vast number of players in the EA custom classes - Receivers with 74 speed and tackles with 66 strength.

Was this intentionally done and if so, why?

On a related note, Custom Draft Class Builder could be a golden gem for the future of Connected Careers.

IF I had to guess, I think they made the draft classes with being able to edit all positions in mind. Like that slow as molasses receiver has more TE like stats. But since they limited the position changes so much it kills the point of having some rating that are completely off for a lot of drafted players. That's just my guess. Also adding in the ability to edit build or at least change weight would help with realism with some of those really wonky drafted player sizes.

Remember when Chad Johnson/Ochocinco started kicking XPs as a lark? And they gave him enchanced kicker stats on Madden? Only you could never sub him in as a kicker, so it was as useless as tits on a bull?

      Good times?

These draft classes are absolute trash. I used to covet draft picks in leagues. Now, unless it's one of the few studs in the draft, I'm trading for actual players.

Madden 10, All-pro, fast, speed threshold at ZERO... 30 custom classes that have a life of their own, in a 32 team WFL/USFL/AFL league with generated players and created stadiums, conferences, rivarlies.... Yeah like every short wr/rb I see is slow as hell. In real life the are usually the fastest.

yea, i don't understand this. this was my first time with a madden class. the story line was alright, but looks like i'll be just importing from ncaa from here on out. with their plethora of white corners and receivers and black punters and kickers, LOL.

Yeah, they took those draft classes from the Head Coach 09 game into Madden 10. Pretty awesome. Most balanced draft classes in all of Madden so far...

In an online league you almost have to import draft classes. One person uses a guide, then every person uses a guide, and at that point there's no purpose to any draft pick beyond the first round because practically every player with talent is off the board within 32 picks. Import a class and in my experience the depth is a lot better, the variety is a lot nicer & you don't have a handful of great players and a ton of busts. The online leagues I'm in end up "name drafting" after round 2 where you just skim the list for what you believe to be the funniest-named player remaining & take him.

It'd be simple to fix: take that huge list of players, and randomly assign names to them. Sometimes Player X is a quarterback, sometimes he's a kicker, sometimes he's a linebacker. Draw players from the giant list to build a unique draft class, with parameters so that no draft is going to have 20 great QBs, no draft will have 0 draftable linebackers, etc. just like real life. Some drafts have clear #1 prospects, some drafts are more of a mess.

Keep the storylines, but instead of assigning them to set players with set ratings, pull a random player from the storyline's position (again, you can set up parameters so that the track star turned WR isn't an undraftable slowpoke, or the long-range punter doesn't end up with 50 KPW).

For example: say season 1 Madden runs a storyline where a former offensive lineman moves to kicker due to a severe arm injury that ended his career at tackle; instead of having that kicker always be Jim Bob McBlocker, 74 KPW 81 KAC, sometimes it gets assigned to Patrick Footer, 84 KPW 93 KAC. Another person might get it assigned to Charlie Clubfoot, 97 KPW 51 KAC.

You could eventually work out the parameters of the storylines ("Hey the kicker with the storyline about a 70 yard field goal always ends up with 90+ KPW") but it wouldn't really be worth making a guide over, if you did it properly.

Makes me want to learn programming to set up a proof of concept, because I love the draft.
