Series 13 vs Red Sox

MLB-Best Red Sox Too Much For Twins

After taking 2 of 3 against AL Central leading Detroit, the Twins got a chance to play the best team in baseball. The Red Sox, coming into the series at 22-15, were more than Minnesota could handle and delivered the 3-game sweep. Highlights for the Red Sox including continued mashing from early AL MVP candidate David Ortiz and a 7 for 13 series for youngun Xander Bogaerts.

Game 1 pitted Jake Peavy against Phil Hughes, and although Hughes had his strikeout pitch working and K'd 5 consecutive Red Sox at one instance, Peavy came out on top. Peavy went 7 innings, scattering 7 hits, and induced 11 swing-and-misses on low changeups out of the zone.

Game 2 was the most competitive of the series and saw the Twins nearly come back from a 4-0 1st inning deficit. It was truly a nightmarish 1st inning for Sam Deduno. There was a throwing error by Trevor Plouffe, getting badly squeezed in Mike Napoli's AB, a double clutch on an unsuccessful double play turn attempt, a wild pitch (off Kurt Suzuki's glove), and a dropped 3rd strike to the backstop that allowed A.J. Pierzynski to reach despite fanning. In spite of the bad start, it came down to a pinch hit fly ball by Chris Colabello falling 10 feet short of a walkoff HR to deliver the win for Boston.

The series finale was a display of offense against a weak effort from Kyle Gibson. Gibson managed just 30% 1st pitch strikes and was hammered in deeper counts. The Red Sox scored 8 times on 14 hits and Xander Bogaerts had a 4-hit game.

Game 38: Red Sox 7, Twins 1

Game 39: Red Sox 5, Twins 4

Game 40: Red Sox 8, Twins 4
