Part I of V: 2013 Year In Review
The New England Patriots completed a successful 2013 campaign, depending on how you ask. Although the Patriots had an up and down season, the team finished with an 11-5 record. It wasn't easy getting there. Quarterback Tom Brady's play was probably the most inconsistent it has been in his career. Although Brady finished the year with 30 touchdown passes, he also threw a career high 26 interceptions. That's 12 more than the second most interceptions he's thrown in a season. Despite that, strong play from Stevan Ridley and Danny Amendola on offense helped keep the team on top.
Ridley followed a successful 2012 season by rushing for 1,489 yards and eight touchdowns. Ridley wasn't the only back to contribute. Both LeGarrette Blount and Shane Vereen did there part to make New England's rushing attack a potent one. Vereen rushed for 500 yards with four touchdowns, while Blount had 575 yards and two touchdowns. Vereen's contributions to the offense didn't just come on the ground however.
Both Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen were a huge part of why this offense was ranked near the top of the league.
With Danny Woodhead signing with the San Diego Chargers, Vereen took a bigger role in New England's passing attack as well. Vereen would be needed greatly to aid New England as the team had revamped the wide receiver position in 2013. New England drafted Aaron Dobson and Josh Boyce with the 59th and 102nd overall picks in the 2013 draft. Also, with the team acquiring Danny Amendola and rookie receiver Kenbrell Thompkins, there was a lot of catching up that needed to be done. While it wasn't always easy, the offense managed to make it work. Amendola's 126 receptions were second in the league. Undrafted rookie Thompkins exceeded expectations, starting all 16 games and recording 766 receiving yards. Most of this was done without the services of Rob Gronkowski who had missed a majority of the season because of injuries. When he did play, he did make an impact. While the offense did good, the defense also played a significant role in helping the team get to the Super Bowl.

Although they were new to the New England Patriots offense, Danny Amendola, Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson still made big plays.
While the defense made a lot of huge plays last season, the pass defense was still a huge liability. The teams run defense was great all year long, but it didn't translate to being able to defend quarterbacks. However, linebacker Jerod Mayo did his part to keep the defense running smoothly. Mayo recorded 140 total tackles and six sacks. Mayo's stats are something that stood out with New England's defense last year. While the defense didn't play well together, individually, there were players that had outstanding stats. Rob Ninkovich recorded a career high 17 sacks, while defensive backs Kyle Arrington and Talib each snagged eight and nine interceptions respectively. Despite their efforts, the pass defense still suffered, as New England's pass defense was ranked last in the NFL in 2013.

Jerod Mayo showed why he is still one of the best linebackers in the NFL and his effort earned him AFC Defensive Player of the Year.
Last but not least, the one aspect of an NFL team that gets overlooked is special teams. While there wasn't much excitement to come out of this unit, they played well enough to not be a part of the troubles that plagued New England last year. While rookie Boyce didn't receive many snaps at wide receiver, he got the chance to show off his speed as a kick returner. Unfortunately, Boyce didn't have many big plays and averaged only 24 yards per return. Despite Boyce's inability to make plays, he did take good care of the ball. On the other hand, Julian Edelman was sensational as a punt returner. Not only did Edelman have the most return yards in the NFL, he also ran two punts back for touchdowns in back to back games. Other notable contributors to New England's special teams unit were Dane Fletcher and Nate Ebner. Fletcher's contributions stand out as he recorded 10 special teams tackles.
Despite the success individual players had last season, their issues with the pass defense and Brady's horribly inconsistent play reared it's ugly head in the Super Bowl. With an offseason of planning, the New England Patriots hope to not only make it to a Super Bowl this year, they hope to win it all.
