Re: Whatever Happened to the Patriot Way - A Madden NFL 25 New England Patriots CFM

Part I of V: 2013 Year In Review

The New England Patriots completed a successful 2013 campaign, depending on how you ask. Although the Patriots had an up and down season, the team finished with an 11-5 record. It wasn't easy getting there. Quarterback Tom Brady's play was probably the most inconsistent it has been in his career. Although Brady finished the year with 30 touchdown passes, he also threw a career high 26 interceptions. That's 12 more than the second most interceptions he's thrown in a season. Despite that, strong play from Stevan Ridley and Danny Amendola on offense helped keep the team on top.

Ridley followed a successful 2012 season by rushing for 1,489 yards and eight touchdowns. Ridley wasn't the only back to contribute. Both LeGarrette Blount and Shane Vereen did there part to make New England's rushing attack a potent one. Vereen rushed for 500 yards with four touchdowns, while Blount had 575 yards and two touchdowns. Vereen's contributions to the offense didn't just come on the ground however.

Both Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen were a huge part of why this offense was ranked near the top of the league.

With Danny Woodhead signing with the San Diego Chargers, Vereen took a bigger role in New England's passing attack as well. Vereen would be needed greatly to aid New England as the team had revamped the wide receiver position in 2013. New England drafted Aaron Dobson and Josh Boyce with the 59th and 102nd overall picks in the 2013 draft. Also, with the team acquiring Danny Amendola and rookie receiver Kenbrell Thompkins, there was a lot of catching up that needed to be done. While it wasn't always easy, the offense managed to make it work. Amendola's 126 receptions were second in the league. Undrafted rookie Thompkins exceeded expectations, starting all 16 games and recording 766 receiving yards. Most of this was done without the services of Rob Gronkowski who had missed a majority of the season because of injuries. When he did play, he did make an impact. While the offense did good, the defense also played a significant role in helping the team get to the Super Bowl.

Although they were new to the New England Patriots offense, Danny Amendola, Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson still made big plays.

While the defense made a lot of huge plays last season, the pass defense was still a huge liability. The teams run defense was great all year long, but it didn't translate to being able to defend quarterbacks. However, linebacker Jerod Mayo did his part to keep the defense running smoothly. Mayo recorded 140 total tackles and six sacks. Mayo's stats are something that stood out with New England's defense last year. While the defense didn't play well together, individually, there were players that had outstanding stats. Rob Ninkovich recorded a career high 17 sacks, while defensive backs Kyle Arrington and Talib each snagged eight and nine interceptions respectively. Despite their efforts, the pass defense still suffered, as New England's pass defense was ranked last in the NFL in 2013.

Jerod Mayo showed why he is still one of the best linebackers in the NFL and his effort earned him AFC Defensive Player of the Year.

Last but not least, the one aspect of an NFL team that gets overlooked is special teams. While there wasn't much excitement to come out of this unit, they played well enough to not be a part of the troubles that plagued New England last year. While rookie Boyce didn't receive many snaps at wide receiver, he got the chance to show off his speed as a kick returner. Unfortunately, Boyce didn't have many big plays and averaged only 24 yards per return. Despite Boyce's inability to make plays, he did take good care of the ball. On the other hand, Julian Edelman was sensational as a punt returner. Not only did Edelman have the most return yards in the NFL, he also ran two punts back for touchdowns in back to back games. Other notable contributors to New England's special teams unit were Dane Fletcher and Nate Ebner. Fletcher's contributions stand out as he recorded 10 special teams tackles.

Despite the success individual players had last season, their issues with the pass defense and Brady's horribly inconsistent play reared it's ugly head in the Super Bowl. With an offseason of planning, the New England Patriots hope to not only make it to a Super Bowl this year, they hope to win it all.

Part II of V: Let's Get Ready to Rumble!

The 2014 NFL season is just about ready to begin and already the excitement has permeated the entire nation. The NFL decided to throw more fuel on the fire when it scheduled eight division games to get the opening week of the season started. As if fans didn't have a reason to cheer on their favorite teams, this schedule will only make fans even more animated than they already are. It all starts with the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks hosting their division rival San Francisco 49ers. Talk about a tough way to start the season.

The Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers waste no time getting back into their rivalry this season. The Super Bowl XLVlll champions and 2013 NFC West Division champs will look to put their stamp on the division early. If the 49ers hope to make a return trip of their own to the Super Bowl, they'll have to start by doing better than they did last season. The 49ers missed the playoffs altogether after finishing the season 8-8.

After Peyton Manning retired and the Denver Broncos failed to draft a quarterback in this years draft, a palpable sense of dread hung over the city. With the Broncos trading for Tony Romo, things are at least a lot more interesting. No one would deny Romo has talent, but his shortcomings with the Dalls Cowboys have been well documented. Romo isn't the only quarterback in this game that has a reputation of not living up to his potential. After the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected him in with the 17th pick in round one of the 2009 Draft, Josh Freeman didn't meet expectations.A 4-12 record and poor play led to the Buccaneers not resigning him. Now both quarterbacks have a fresh start with which to build their NFL legacy. The only question that remains now is whether or not they'll take advantage of the situation.

Just in time for the Seattle Seahawks prime time game against the San Francisco 49ers, running back Marshawn Lynch has been cleared to play. Lynch broke his thumb in a week three preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. The injury isn't expected to hinder Lynch going forward.

The Buffalo Bills made some extra moves this week, releasing safety Da'Norris Searcy and kicker Dustin Hopkins. As a rookie, Hopkins made 81% of his kicks last year, but didn't show consistency on the longer ones. He completed only 68% of kicks 40 yards or longer. Searcy played mostly on special teams and received very limited snaps on defense, finishing the year with 14 total tackles.
Signing center Evan Dietrich-Smith gives the Bills a capable center to hold down the fort until Eric Wood returns, while Jared Odrick can come in and spell either Corbin Bryant or Marcel Dareus when needed.

        Media Reaction
Chris Mortensen @mortreportEA: Seahawks are more than a little thrilled to get Marshawn Lynch back.

            Game Notes
The New England Patriots start the 2014 season with a road game against the Miami Dolphins. The Patriots swept the Dolphins last year, narrowly winning the first game in New England 26-20 and blowing them out in the second game 48-19. The Patriots' record against the Dolphins all time is now 47-50.

In order to win the game, the Dolphins will have to rely on their stingy defense, which comes into the 2014 season ranked 12th in the league. What could be an advantage could actually be a draw, as the Patriots have the 11th ranked offense. Looking at the statistics, this game may be closer than anticipated.

The New England Patriots continued their dominance over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday with a victory in Sun Life Stadium. Not only did the Patriots get a win to open the season, they also did it in impressive fashion. Not everything went smoothly during the game and the Patriots would be the first to admit that they could play better. Despite some of the issues the Patriots had, there's no doubt they'll enjoy this victory.

Some of the issues mentioned earlier that the Patriots had were painfully obvious in the first quarter. The Dolphins received the ball first and easily marched down the field. Not only did New England's porous pass defense from last year show up, but a new issue arose. The Patriots inside duo of Vince Wilfork and Tommy Kelly looked defenseless against the run. The Patriots managed to score a touchdown after holding the Dolphins to a field goal, but the Dolphins had an answer of their own. After the first quarter, Miami had a 10-7 lead.

Boyce prepares to catch one of his three touchdown passes.

Something happened after the first quarter, as the Patriots defense began to play better. The defense got stops on some third down and put together some scoring drives of their own. The offense was helped by the efforts of second year receiver Josh Boyce who had a career game Sunday. Not only was Boyce's play outstanding, the running game improved in the second quarter. All this contributed to New England having a 17-10 lead at half time.

Rob Gronkowski makes a great one handed catch as two defenders close in on him.

With the ball in their possession to begin the second half, New England wasted no time going down the field and getting into the red zone. The whole drive was lost when Tom Brady threw an interception, putting the pressure back onto New England's defense. Fortunately, the defense stood tall, forcing the Dolphins to punt. Both teams went back and forth during the quarter with New England forcing a turnover of its own. New England would score late in the quarter on a two yard run by running back Stevan Ridley. Despite having a number of chances after that, the Dolphins failed to do anything productive on offense for the rest of the game. Another score by New England in the fourth quarter put them up by three touchdowns on the Dolphins. With a 31-10 victory, the Patriots started the 2014 on the right foot.

Kyle Arrington does a nice job of preventing Dolphins receiver Brandon Gibson from catching a pass along the sideline.

Besides a few issues like their third down defense and some inconsistent play on both offense and defense, the Patriots played well. There's no doubt that they'll be happy to get a win not only on week one, but in the division too. Now it's on to the Dallas Cowboys.

              Game Ball/Extra Reps

              Game Ball
Tom Brady: After a slow start, Brady and the offense have a strong finish, with Brady throwing for 406 yards and three touchdowns.

Josh Boyce: Boyce has a breakout game filling in for the injured Danny Amendola with 150 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

Offensive Line: Brady is able to pick apart the Dolphins' defense because the o-line keeps him clean all game as they don't allow a single sack.

              Extra Reps
Defensive Line: The defensive line, most notably Tommy Kelly and Vince Wilfork, get pushed around a bit as the Dolphins total 91 rushing yards on the ground.

              Media Reaction
Mike Hill: Feel like this Patriots team might be on to something with this winning on the road business.

Mike Hill @MikeHillEA: Spoke with Pete Carroll, and 75 wins later he still has plenty he wants to accomplish.
Mark Schlereth @MarkSchlerethEA: Seahawks did what they had to at home to pull this one in. Solid win.
Ross Tucker @RossTuckerEA: It's always the rule: protect home field. Cleveland did that.
Skip Bayless @SkipBaylessEA: Best way to win over your fan base: win at home. #Redskins didn't get that memo.
Susannah Collins @SCollinsEA: Hope Mike Hill was watching that -- big win at home for the Texans.
Adam Schefter @AdamSchefterEA: Cardinals couldn't stop a nosebleed today, and no way they were going to stop the Vikings from winning.
Trey Wingo @WingozEA: Never discount the value of winning a gsme on the road. Never discount the pain of losing at home.
Matt Miller @MattMillerEA: Long flight home feels way shorter after a win. Well played by the Chiefs.
Susannah Collins @SCollinsEA: Packers never flinched!!! That was a hard-fought victory against a bitter rival.
Ross Tucker @RossTuckerEA: The game in Denver this week is how a great rivalry should play out. Clean football but heated football.
Robert Flores RoFloEA: Matt Schaub just exuding confidence this week. 4 TDs before he reigned it in. #Texans
Lavar Arrington @LAringtonEA: 6 sacks for Mark Anderson today, probably want to cover that guy.

Week 1 of the 2014 NFL season got off to a hot start. With many of the teams playing within their division, that energized the games even more. Now that the dust has somewhat settled, we'll get to see how teams adjust to their circumstances and the opponent they'll face in week 2.

The Billy Perez era is underway in Philadelphia and the fans are already in a frenzy. A convincing week 1 win against the Dallas Cowboys has the fans eager for more wins. Perez is still a rookie and there is a lot more football to be played. Will this week be the week that Perez is bought back down to earth or will he and the city continue to ride high off another win?

The San Diego Chargers haven't had much hope in the last few seasons. The last time the team finished with a record better than .500 was in 2010. With an 0-1 start, fans in San Diego have to be on edge again. Things won't get easier for San Diego this week as the Minnesota Vikings and their sack happy defense are coming to town.

                          New England Patriots Scouting Report

Although it's only week 2 of the 2014 season, it's not to early to start looking at players for the 2015 season. At least for scouts it isn't. This week, the scouts have focused their attention on potential 2015 quarterback draft prospects. Tom Brady isn't getting any younger and Ryan Mallet and Rocco Harpole haven't proven themselves yet. Also worth noting is the fact that Mallet is in the last year of his deal.

Ross Tucker @RossTuckerEA: Georgia? Please. I'm not buying them or this Stroman standout.
Ross Tucker @RossTuckerEA: If you're starting a d-line from scratch, Stacy Nicholas is a mound full of awesome as a starting point.
Ross Tucker @RossTuckerEA: Keep a close eye on Oregon's Keyon Bates. Mobile QB who has tons of upside.
Ross Tucker @RossTuckerEA: Players are maturing faster than ever these days. Remember Jadaveon Clowney? Malaki Paris is him on repeat.

Being healthy during the season is key to keeping everything on schedule for NFL teams. This week the San Francisco 49ers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Philadelphia Eagles will have a better time staying on schedule when they get back Anthony Davis, Carl Nicks, and Evan Mathis. There's no doubt that having your offensive line healthy and ready to play can be beneficial to the success of the team. The Eagles especially need Mathis back with the number of injuries they have had along the offensive line so far this season.

Ross Tucker @RossTuckerEA: It's always all hands on deck in the NFL so getting back Anthony Davis will help this week.
Skip Bayless @SkipBaylessEA: E. Mathis has been practicing all week so no reason to believe he won't pay this week.
Mark Schlereth @MarkSchlerethEA: In the locker room, you get a little boost seeing somebody like C. Nicks come back.

The New England Patriots will look to take advantage of how the Dallas Cowboys have stumbled out of the starting blocks. Also look for New England to take advantage of Dallas's depleted defensive line as well. Currently, Dallas has three players that won't be able to play. This puts a lot of pressure on the starters as they'll have to stay in for a longer period of time. With New England not generating much of a pass rush in the season opener, that may give Dallas the opportunity to strike with their passing attack.
