Re: Whatever Happened to the Patriot Way - A Madden NFL 25 New England Patriots CFM

Earlier in the season, it was stated that things were beginning to take shape in the NFL. Now, it appears as though things are starting to solidify themselves. While it's still too early to say who will or who won't make it into the playoffs, there are teams that haven't help themselves in the process of getting there. A few teams, such as the Cleveland Browns, Philadelphia Eagles, and the Detroit Lions have done surprisingly well compared to where they were at this point last season. It's only week seven and there's a long way to go. A Super Bowl champion has never been crowned after the first seven weeks of the NFL season.

With another rookie quarterback playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars, there will be some forgiveness when talking about their 2-3 record. After a terrible 0-3 start with a lot of players out because of injuries, the Jaguars have bounced back. With a two game winning streak, the Jaguars will host their division rival the Houston Texans. With the defense that the Jaguars have this season, they could make some trouble in the league. That's trouble that first year head coach Stephen Crandall will want to avoid. With a 3-2 start to the season, the rookie head coach will hope to keep riding his success into the playoffs.

Speaking of new head coaches that have been successful, Demetrius Turner should be feeling good right now. After losing to the Packers in the season opener, the Detroit Lions have gone on a five game winning streak. The naysayers will point out that they've only faced two teams with a winning record so far, but the Lions can only play the teams on their schedule. Not only do the Detroit Lions have a top ten offense, their defense is ranked 11th in the league. This will be put to the test when they travel to Sports Authority Field to take on the Denver Broncos. While the Broncos aren't scaring anyone with their 3-3 record and 27th ranked defense, the Lions would be doing themselves a disservice by overlooking them. With their only two wins coming against teams with a combined record of 2-8, the Broncos would like to prove they are a contender by stopping the Lions's winning streak.

        New England Patriots Scouting Report

The emergence of Josh Boyce in The New England Patriots offense was supposed to settle their offense. However, Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson seem to have fallen into their sophomore slump. Also, rookie Ivan Cross hasn't had much playing time either. While this has contributed to looking at potential wide receiver prospects, scouts have to check out players that maybe declaring for the draft. Along with wide receivers, the Patriots scouts have also looked at tight ends. While the current group of receivers looks promising, the same couldn't be said about the tight ends. Kalum Tyler out of Houston looks like he could bring additional help to the return game, while tight end Zachery Lloyd has been worth watching as well.

While the Green Bay Packers getting back Casey Hayward only helps an already good defense, both the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants need all the help they can get. Luckily the Vikings get back Matt Kalil back and the Giants will have Jason Pierre-Paul.

          Media Reaction
Skip Bayless - @SkipBaylessEA: M. Kalil has been practicing all week so no reason to believe he won't play this week.
Ross Tucker - @RossTuckerEA: It's always all hands on deck in the NFL so getting back Casey Hayward will help this week.
Mark Schlereth - @MarkSchlerethEA: Giants will have one less active roster spot to fill with Jason Pierre-Paul returning this week.

              Game Notes
The New England Patriots are back from their bye week to host the New York Jets. This game looks like it could be a struggle for the Jets as their offense has been deplorable all season. However, the Jets have been able to lean on their 4th ranked defense to get them two wins so far. Facing the Patriots with this offense will make getting the win a monumental task for the Jets. If the Jets' defense can force some turnovers like the Buffalo Bills did, they may have a better chance of winning the game.

There's always some uncertainty when playing a division rival. Since they're in the same division, those teams play against you more often, and that means they start to recognize some of the tendencies you have. For the New England Patriots and New York Jets, these teams have become quite familiar with each other. Over the last decade, that familiarity hasn't translated into success for the Jets. The only familiar feeling that the Jets and Patriots had was of the former getting blown out. In fact, just last season in their week 7 game, the Patriots beat the Jets 52-10 in New York.

The Patriots made few mistakes in the game against the Jets and capitalized on the mistakes that the Jets made. The Jets not being able to convert their third downs was one of those mistakes. With only a quarter of their third downs converted, many of the Jets' drives stalled prematurely and their defense had to come back onto the field. However, the Jets did a good job of stopping the Patriots offense, holding them to just 31% on their attempts. Besides holding what was once a potent running game in check, the Jets had found little success in other parts of the game.

New York Jets rookie defensive tackle Roman Stream sacks quarterback Tom Brady early in the game.

The game was basically dominated by the Patriots. On defense, the Patriots consistently got off the field and forced turnovers. Along with Geno Smith's three interceptions, the Patriots also forced a turnover. The Jets' receivers did their part in helping the defense by dropping passes during the game. While Patriots receiver Danny Amendola had some drops during the game, the fact that the Jets receivers dropped passes on third down didn't help.

A jarring hit by second year linebacker Jamie Collins forces running back Bilal Powell to fumble the ball. Safety Stephen Gregory quickly picks up the ball and returns it for a touchdown.

To make matters worse, the Jets played the game without right tackle J'Marcus Webb. This left backup Ben Ijalana as the starter in the game against Rob Ninkovich, and the matchup didn't end with Ijalana the victor. Ninkovich recorded three sacks in the game and gave up another to rookie defensive end Jamie Abreu. In all, the Jets allowed five sacks in the game.

Both Rob Ninkovich and Chandler Jones contributed the the New England Patriots five sacks in the game against the New York Jets.

There's no doubt that having a game like this against a division rival will be a boost for the Patriots, even though the Jets aren't considered a contending team. The Patriots can only beat the teams on their schedule and they'll have to take the same approach heading into next weeks game against the Oakland Raiders.

                Game Ball/Extra Reps
                Game Ball:
Tom Brady: The veteran quarterback has a spectacular game throwing for 294 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Kyle Arrington: In his first game back since being injured, Arrington takes an interception back 17 yards for a touchdown.

Rob Ninkovich: Ninkovich makes pass rushing look easy, recording three sacks in the game.

                Extra Reps
Danny Amendola: Despite having two touchdown receptions, Amendola continues to have issues with dropped passes, as he has three in the game.

Offensive Line: Not only do they not open many running lanes for Stevan Ridley, but the offensive line allows Brady to be sacked five times.

                Media Reaction
Adam Schefter - @AdamSchefterEA: What a whipping. This is the kind of home win against a rival that makes the Patriots feel like they can win out.
Skip Bayless - @SkipBaylessEA: It's not G. Smith's 3 INTs that cost the Jets the game, it's the poor decisions.

Trey Wingo - @WongozEA: Everyone knows how crucial it is to pick up any road wins you can. #Texans #Jaguars
Mike Hill - @MikeHillEA: Big win at home for San Francisco. Like how the team came out after to applaud the home fans.
Matt Miller - @MattMillerEA: Long flight home feels way shorter after a win. Well played by the Bills.
Robert Flores - @RoFloEA: Chargers had some good home cooking this week it seems, had some pep in their step.
Susannah Collins - @SCollinsEA: Hope Mike Hill was watching that -- big win for the Saints.
Matt Miller - @MattMillerEA: Browns will be dissatisfied to say the least after coming up short at home.
Ross Tucker - @RossTuckerEA: Really was a hot crowd in Chicago this week but no storybook ending for them.
Susannah Collins - @SCollinsEA: Ravens never flinched!! That was a hard-fought victory against a bitter rival.
Mark Schlereth - @MarkSchlerethEA: Another day at the office for E.J. Manuel, took 3 TDs to win the game for the Bills.
Skip Bayless - @SkipBaylessEA: If the Colts defense wants to be elite, there's work to do. They had 5 sacks, but could have been more.
Adam Schefter - @AdamSchefterEA: 2 TDs for S. Johnson was obviously enough to help push his Bills past the Giants.
Susannah Collins - @SCollinsEA: Does A. Foster have cooties? The D let him waltz into the endzone for 2 TDs.
Chris Mortensen - @mortreportEA: If the #Seahawks defense can keep this up, their D will be hard to deal with.
Lavar Arrington - @LArringtonEA: 3 TD tosses for Drew Bees as he leads Saints to W.
Chris Mortensen - @mortreportEA: Many felt Joe Philbin would have a better game plan coming into that game against the Eagles.
Mark Schlereth - @MarkSchlerethEA: You earn road wins, but you have to just go out and take home wins. #Broncos win.

The halfway point of the 2014 season has arrived and it doesn't look like it's taken a toll on teams in the NFL, yet. Most teams around the league hve most of their squad healthy and ready to go. Other teams are limping along with either most of their offensive line or defensive line out with injuries. Injuries haven't stopped the Philadelphia Eagles from winning, even though they are starting a rookie quarterback. Whether or not you are a healthy team or an injury-laden the opponent won't have any sympathy. Teams around the NFL will have to make the best out of what they have.

The last time the Cleveland Browns were above .500 at week 8 was back in 2007, so it's safe to say the team hasn't seen much success recently. With the success of rookie Chadd Waisome, there appears to be a quarterback controversy brewing in Cleveland. As of right now, Brandon Weeden will be back in his starting role. Weeden hasn't played since he injured his ankle in week one. However, none of this matters to the Pittsburgh Steelers as their primary objective for this game is to beat the Browns and retake the AFC North.

Two of the top teams in the NFL meet in Lambeau Field on Sunday as the Kansas City Chiefs will face the Green Bay Packers. From the looks of things, the Packers are a team that can't be slowed down. One of the previously alluded to teams that has had injuries along the offensive line are the Packers. Even so, they have won the first six games of the year. Kansas City would like to be the team that ends the Packers' winning streak, just like they did back in 2011.

                            New England Patriots Scouting Report

An often overlooked part of the game of football are the players on special teams. If scouts and player personnel overlook these positions, it could have a negative effect on the football team. This week, the scouts have focused on a group of pretty good punter and kicker prospects. The most notable among them is Boston College kicker V.J. Stumph. With Stephen Gostkowski in the final year of his deal, this may be a position that sees some change. In case that happens, the Patriots should be prepared to possibly have a rookie kicker playing for them in 2015.

Knowing that a player is returning from injury is always good news in the NFL. While Rob Gronkowski, Mario Williams, and Jamaal Charles will be returning to teams that are in contention for a playoff spot, Jay Cutler, Jake Long, and Julius Peppers won't be so lucky.
