Re: Oakland Exodus

2014: Week 10
Denver Broncos @ Oakland Raiders

Peyton Rules the Air in Oakland

Matt McGloin left the game with a dislocated shoulder in the third quarter of a losing effort against the Broncos.

Whatever momentum the Raiders had gained by upsetting Seattle last week, it wasn't enough to overcome Peyton Manning and the overwhelming Denver Broncos, who are in a tight race for the AFC West with the equally dominant Kansas City Chiefs. Manning did what he knows best -- pass aggressively and often, bringing in over 300 yards on the way to a division win in Oakland.

The Raiders brought a few new wrinkles to their gameplan this week, and it worked early on in the game. Seeking to find more ways to get mileage out of high-performing WR Denarius Moore, Dennis Allen lined him up under center in a pair of Wildcat formations, and on the opening drive he was able to use the Broncos' confusion to his advantage and make an outside run into the endzone to give Oakland an early 7-0 edge.

That steam was short-lived, though, and the Raiders couldn't find the end zone for the rest of the first half, while Denver racked up 19 points by halftime through a combination of a strong kicking game and Manning's aerial attack. The Raiders' luck only got worse in the third quarter when McGloin was hit hard while scrambling for a first down, dislocating his shoulder and sitting out the remainder of the game. Derek Carr stepped in to finish the game and capped his first drive with a short touchdown pass to James Jones, making the game seem within reach once again.

Derek Carr tallied a touchdown pass on his first drive, but struggled for the remainder of the game.

Manning didn't let that last long, as he went deep on the very next series and tossed a deep pass to Demaryius Thomas, who sped past the entire Oakland secondary for an 80-yard touchdown, deflating whatever remained of an Oakland comeback.

From there, the Raiders struggled to produce for the rest of the game, and the fourth quarter passed quietly as the team dropped a home game and fell under .500 once again. It remains to be determined if McGloin's injury will keep him out next week against the Chargers, and the team has not announced if Matt Schaub or Derek Carr will take his place if he's forced to miss a week of play.
