2014: Week 12
Kansas City Chiefs @ Oakland Raiders
Raiders' Cost High in Defensive Battle
The Raiders lost the game and their starting Quarterback Thursday night.
Under the prime-time spotlight of Thursday Night Football, one of the best teams in the NFL came to Oakland to face the Raiders on their home turf, and the Chiefs were looking for an important win to stay in an increasingly tight race for the division with the Denver Broncos. The Chiefs needed the win to stay in contention for the AFC West crown, and the Raiders needed the win to keep their slim wildcard hopes alive and continue the hunt for their all-elusive winning season.
And from the first snap, it seemed like Oakland had found the rhythm to make that happen. James Jones, who has generally sacrificed the spotlight to his fellow receiver Denarius Moore, caught his Cornerback over-pursuing on a curl route, and broke sharply down the field for a 46-yard touchdown run, and Sebastian Janikowski followed up with a field goal to put the team up 10-0 early on.

Kansas City seemed to be searching desperately for momentum, but they found it quickly. After Janikowski's field goal gave the Raiders a two-possession lead, HB Jamaal Charles took the kickoff that followed out of the end zone and broke several tackles, tearing down the sideline and answering with a 102-yard kickoff return that quickly deflated Oakland's high spirits.
The second quarter only saw a single field goal to tie the game at 10-10, but Oakland suffered a devastating blow when QB Matt McGloin left the game after re-injuring his shoulder while being sacked. McGloin has had a rough time with injuries this season, missing part of the season opener with an ankle injury, and sitting out a game and a half thanks to a dislocated shoulder suffered against the Broncos. Dennis Allen kept him off the field last week against San Diego to give him extra time to recover, but it proved fruitless as McGlioin suffered a torn shoulder labrum, which took him out for the remainder of Thursday's game.
With McGloin's season looking likely to be over and Jamaal Charles taking the wind out of their sails, the Raiders struggled to produce drives in the second half, and a fumble on a wide receiver screen set up a Jamaal Charles touchdown run to close out the game, leaving the Raiders to lick their wounds and eagerly await word on McGloin's condition.
A fumbled screen to James Jones set up the game-winning touchdown for the Chiefs.

Now, the Raiders will have to decide whether to place their season in the hands of rookie Derek Carr or veteran Matt Schaub as they attempt to make it through the rest of their season with a winning record. The playoff picture is grim and extremely unlikely for Oakland, and at this point an above-.500 record is the team's only realistic season-ending goal. Next week they face the NFL's worst team in the St. Louis Rams which should be an easy win, but they will need to do some significant regrouping in order to close out the season on a winning note.
