Charles Runs All Over Raiders to Keep Chiefs in Divisional Hunt
As the Chiefs try to seize the AFC West, Jamaal Charles had a stellar day to help his team's cause.
When the Raiders and Chiefs met for the first time this year on Thursday Night Footall, Oakland started off strong and gave up just enough to lose a narrow game to their division rivals. This weekend, with the Chiefs still neck-and-neck with the Broncos for the division and the Raiders somehow hanging on to a remote statistical probability of a Wild Card spot, the teams met for a second time in a game that wasn't even competitive.
Derek Carr may have looked impressive last week, putting up three all-purpose touchdowns against the 49ers, but this week he looked nervous and overwhelmed by Kansas City's defense. Carr threw one interception and gave up three fumbles, helping to ensure that KC got ahead early. And for a struggling team that relies on an aggressive ground game to keep a deliberate pace, falling behind early spells disaster. As the pressure mounted for the Raiders to abandon their methodical rushing attack and shoot downfield for quick points, Carr gradually looked worse and worse.
Derek Carr had major issues securing the ball, giving Kansas City four turnovers.
Alex Smith played respectably, but it was all-star Running Back Jamaal Charles who dominated the game, rushing for 228 yards -- more than the entire Oakland offense. Charles had stout run blocking and broke tackles all over the field, presenting a relentless assault that the Raiders' front seven never found a way to reliably contain. Joe McKnight chipped in to carry the rock while Charles rested on the sidelines, but it was Charles who shouldered the lion's share of his team's victory.
The Raiders never found a way to slow down Jamaal Charles, who out-produced the whole Oakland offense.
The win proved crucial for the Chiefs in their race with the Broncos, who downed San Diego this week to stay just a game ahead in the division. The Raiders, who were already at the bottom of the barrel with a hypothetical wild card shot are now likely to be fully statistically eliminated from the playoffs, meaning the team is now playing for pride and a draft pick.
