Coaching carousel
Just completed my first season in game and I'm trying to understand how the coaching carousel works. I know what it is, and I know how it works in real life. Can someone jus help me understand how to navigate it in game?Check out my dynasty thread:

Re: Coaching carousel
Pretty much you get offers from schools to come coach, then once that offer is gone you can't pick it up , and if you dont pick up a new job you stay with your team. -
Re: Coaching carousel
I find it fun to start off as a OC or a DC at a small school and play through a season or two with a high success rate and then you take a stroll on the coaching carousel and work your way up to being a head coach at a UF, FSU, Michigan, ect ...Comment

Re: Coaching carousel
So once I pick "sim to next offer" I can't accept any of the current offers any longer? And I tried to accept a job at eastern michigan but there were 6 coaches and it like cycled through each of us in a random order and then picked one of the other coaches. What's up with that? Even if I accept the job I'm not guaranteed the job?Check out my dynasty thread:

Re: Coaching carousel
You didn't accept the job because it wasn't offered to you. You simmed to your next job offer, but it sounds like it's really your next "job for which you're being considered." You weren't the only one interested and EMU chose someone else. Keep going and you'll get an offer (you'll know it because they'll actually offer the job and you can either accept it, keep looking, or stick with your current contract). So once I pick "sim to next offer" I can't accept any of the current offers any longer? Re: Coaching carousel
Someone mentioned "working your way up", but I want to know if a high prestige coach can ever be offered a HC position at a low tier school. My prestige is A+ and it seems like the only opening that appear when I view the carousel are at upper tier programs. Even then, there's only an average of like 2 openings per off-season.
Recently I have become open to the thought of taking a HC position at a struggling program and try to build it up. Am I out of luck?NCAA FB 2003 - 2014 Dynasties

Re: Coaching carousel
If you have high prestige EVERY lower tier school will make you offers. If you're the top candidate, then the top schools will offer you first (since they get top choice) but if you turn down all the top schools, every school below them will offer as well.Someone mentioned "working your way up", but I want to know if a high prestige coach can ever be offered a HC position at a low tier school. I just went through the carousel after my 4th year with UNC and 1 conference championship. Here is what the coaching carousel looked like (for HC openings) in 2022. I was offered the HC job at every one of these schools, but chose to stay @ UNC.
So I was offered the Texas and Stanford Jobs, but I was also offered the New Mexico St and UL-Monroe jobs too.Attached FilesFavorite Teams:

Re: Coaching carousel
Thanks, that was helpful. I had never actually chose the "decline offer" to see the next lower teams populate the carousel list.

Re: Coaching carousel
Not sure if this is the right place for it within the Forum, but asst. coaches...
I've just finished my 1st season in '14 and as I'm scrolling through the coaching changes 'week' I see my OC and DC names on the list. So, ummmm, wow. Didn't know that could happen, coaches leaving w/o being able to do anything to keep them -- like you can with players.
Did I miss something in an earlier screen? Was there/is there anything in the game that allows for me to go out and seek out my own replacements instead of being given two guys 10+ ranking points below who left?
How far reaching are the ramifications of my coord's dropping from ranks in the 20s to a ranking of 8 for the OC and of 13 for the DC? Does this mean in-season improvements are now limited by the fact the game handed me a pair of schlubs?
And especially from my own ignorance on the carousel, how do I increase their ranks? My own HC number builds each game with stats, awards, etc., toward a given ## that I can see, but I don't see anything about how to gain points to upgrade my coord's.Comment

Re: Coaching carousel
The game chooses your coordinators, and no, you can't stop them from leaving. It sucks since it makes you feel like you aren't running your program, but I think that your program prestige dictates who you get. I have had a pretty good stretch at Oklahoma, and my coordinators leave on an almost yearly basis, but their replacements are high level former HC's that just got fired. I also have run San Diego State, where it feels like I am getting level 5 and below on new coordinators all the time. Your coordinators gain points the same way you do, just only on one side of the ball. Your OC gets points for offensive success, like touchdowns, yards gained, etc. and your DC gets points for turnovers and sacks and total yards gained. It takes a long time to develop them. Not sure if this is the right place for it within the Forum, but asst. coaches...

Saw that rolling from 1 season to the next I am granted the right to 'redistribute' the coord pts., so at least there's that.
And now I see the point totals associated with the 'upgrades' for the Coords, too. Maybe Lashlee and Steele were so high that those numbers were irrelevant last season?
Wish I'd noticed where my 2 new coords came from on that long list the carousel shows during that transitions stage. Rated 8 and 12 I'm thinking they weren't HCs elsewhere and maybe promoted from within.
Taking a bit to get used to '14 and the carousel, which I ignorantly chose not to do at the beginning of my very long '13 dynasty.Comment

Re: Coaching carousel
if you skip an offer, you can't go back and accept it later. The two big flaws in coaching carousel are:
Problem 1:
-you can't consider all offers before accepting one. You either take a job and miss out on other offers, or pass on a job to only wish you had taken it.
Solution:
When I am in the market, I often turn down ALL job offers. I write down the offers I got. That way, I see whats available. I then exit dynasty without saving, and go through the carousel again, accepting the job I decided on. The downfall to this is, from time to time, a team may offer you a job the first time, but not the 2nd time you go through the carousel. Minor issue.
Problem 2:
no retention for coordinators. I really don't know a "fix" for this.Comment

Re: Coaching carousel
When coord's leave, do there new teams 'adopt' their style?
Lost Lashlee from OC at Auburn and had the chance to go play his new team, Cal, in my next season's opener. The Cal QB had clearly been a backup from his stats, but also saw enough playing time to accumulate a fair amount of passing stats -- while racking up negligible rushing stats.
I go into the game expecting a Jared Goff-style passing attack and the next thing I know they're running read-option and this non-rushing QB is running for 1st downs and is Cals leading rusher into the 2nd quarter.
New head coach influence, or maybe I was just leaving the run game open and the CPU was taking advantage of me?
(Lost DC Steele to become HC of Kentucky, as well. Also, Bama's OC Kiffin left to take over Army which you bet your sweet a__ I put on my new schedule).Comment

Couldn't tell if Lashlee is Cal's new HC or OC, but a team will use the PBS of their HC, not their coordinators.Favorite Teams:
