It has a few small cities sprinkled in like Geneva, Elmira, Auburn and Ithaca. Some of the nice towns are Seneca Falls, Skaneateles, Canaduaga, or Victor just to name a few. Oh snap, something I can actually help with! Ummm, yeah, where about are you thinking? I've lived my entire life in Rochester and spent the past 4 years in Syracuse. I know the areas in between pretty decently. So yeah, if you wanna message me some specifics or anything, I might be able to lend a hand. Also, if you do move up here, and you like wine, I highly recommend the wine tours in the Finger Lakes. I just went back in August and it was a ton of fun.

Work would be in Waterloo, if all goes well. Ideally I'm looking to stay within a 30 minute drive, if possible. I'd like a bit of a city/downtown-ish vibe too, as I'd be coming from 100k-ish person city.

So far, Geneva seems like the closest match to what I'm picturing, since both Rochester and Syracuse seem a bit further drive than I'd like. Canandaigua, Seneca Falls, and Auburn were the other places that looked like possibilities.
