COACH GEEZY IN THE BIG EASY PART III: LEGACY | FROM BOURBON ST. TO THE BAYOU -
#2435 -- 9-4 (7-2)
N/R16 -- 6-7 (6-3)
TOP: Tulane junior QB Curtis Byrd finds freshman TE Joel Bowers for an 11-yard second quarter touchdown that gave the Green Wave a 14-7 lead, a lead they would never relinquish. BOTTOM: Green Wave senior RB Orleans Darkwa's 1-yard touchdown plunge blew the game wide open at 28-10 late in the third quarter.
#24 TULANE DOMINATES MARSHALL IN 35-16 POUNDING, CLAIMS SECOND CONSECUTIVE CONFERENCE USA TITLE
Tulane avenges week 9 overtime loss to Thundering Herd in emphatic fashion | Running backs Darkwa and Roberts' strong rushing performances pace Green Wave to fifth straight victory | Darkwa breaks Mewelde Moore's career rushing record, another school record within reach | Team expected to receive Liberty Bowl berth and will now await tomorrow's announcement of opponent
Huntington, WV -- The 24th ranked Tulane Green Wave played mistake-free, ball control football on their way to a 35-16 win over Marshall in the 2013 Conference USA Championship game played at Marshall's home venue. Tulane RB Orleans Darkwa carried the ball 30 times for a game-high 157 yards and a touchdown while also adding a receiving touchdown in the fourth quarter to put the game away at 35-16.
Tulane began the day by going on a 10-play 62-yard drive on its opening drive, taking up the game's first 4:09. The possession culminated with a 5-yard touchdown run by back-up RB Joey Roberts that made the score 7-0.
Roberts' second touchdown of the day came with just 0:14 remaining in the half, allowing Tulane to go into the halftime locker room with a 21-7 advantage. Roberts, a junior, finished the day with 40 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
"We've quietly become one of the nation's better teams at opening the game with a good scoring drive and also at getting points just before halftime,"" said Green Wave head coach D. Geezy.
"When you can set the tone with a long 10-play drive, it can really give your team confidence. It is something we really pride ourselves in."
Marshall (6-7) would open the third quarter by going on a long drive of their own. However they were forced to settle for a 27-yard field goal by PK Corey Woodard to decrease their deficit to 21-10.
Tulane would answer the Thundering Herd's scoring drive with another long, methodical drive. This time they went 75 yards on 11 plays, taking up 4:01. Darkwa's 1-yard touchdown run made the score 28-10 with 2:49 remaining in the third quarter.
"We led them 20-7 at halftime the last time we played so we felt it was important to come out and get points early in the second half and we did that," said Geezy, referring to the team's second half collapse in their 30-27 overtime home loss to Marshall back in week 9 of this season.
"Our game plan was to control the clock today, especially if we got a big lead."
The Green Wave would put the game away in the fourth quarter by going on a 10-play 61-yard drive that took up 4:51 and culminated with Darkwa's aforementioned 6-yard touchdown reception from QB Curtis Byrd. The touchdown pushed Tulane's lead to 35-16 with 3:52 to go in the game.
Byrd finished the game 10 of 19 for 147 yards with 2 touchdown passes and 1 interception, which came on desperation fourth down pass in the game's first half.
Marshall would go on one last-gasp drive late in the game and penetrated the Tulane 5-yard line with just two minutes remaining. However Thundering Herd QB Ed Sullivan's pass to the back corner of the end zone was intercepted by Green Wave freshman ""slash"" OLB Mark Richards with just 1:45 remaining, thwarting Marshall's hopes for a miracle comeback. The interception was Richards' third of the season to go along with his team-leading 91 tackles and 10 sacks in his rookie campaign.
The Tulane defense held Sullivan to 293 passing yards, down from the 422 passing yards he put up in their week 9 match-up.
Thundering Herd RB Aaron Slusher also had a rough afternoon, totaling just 57 rushing yards on 13 carries and only 9 receiving yards. Slusher carved up the Tulane defense with 7 receptions for 114 yards in their week 9 matchup.
"We kept a spy on #28 all game today and we weren't going to let him beat us again," said Tulane assistant head coach/defensive coordinator Charles Kelly.
"We rolled our slash-backer Richards on him and we also used FS Will Washington as an extra defender against him with some double-teams. The players did a great job of executing the game plan."
Tulane (9-4, 7-2) won last year's Conference title game 34-3 over UCF at the Superdome. This is the first time in school history that Tulane has won back-to-back sole conference titles.
The team will now wait for tomorrow's Bowl Selection Show to find out their destination and opponent for their school record third consecutive bowl appearance. They are expected to be invited to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee for a second straight season. The Green Wave defeated Kentucky in last year's Liberty Bowl in a 52-46 double overtime thriller.
Notes: Tulane senior RB Orleans Darkwa broke former Green Wave star RB Mewelde Moore's school record of 4,364 career rushing yards, surpassing him in the third quarter of Saturday's game. Darkwa now has a total of 4,383 career rushing yards, which is also a Conference USA record...Darkwa needs just two rushing touchdowns in Tulane's bowl game in order to break former Tulane star RB Matt Forte's school career record of 38 rushing touchdowns.

I think we're going to have a QB battle next year?
I think the era of Tulane dominance of Conference USA is upon us. I'd like to be invited to a better conference, but won't necessarily mind it if I end up being this dynasty's Boise State.
Great win, the team really came back this season after a rocky start. Should be a tough bowl game coming up but if you can pull out the victory (especially if its against an SEC team) it might help with a push towards a conference invitation. I won't be holding my breath though haha. Darkwa might be the best back to come through Tulane yet, he will be sorely missed next season. I think you also almost have to go with Byrd next year or at least start with him after the redemption he has led. Good luck in the bowl game! Looking forward to seeing who you get matched up against
As you'll see below, Lee and Kirk certainly think we're in for a battle. :******scratch:
I have to agree with you on Byrd. It is going to be awfully hard to sit him his senior season. He has led us to some big wins during his time with the team. I hate two quarterback systems but I may have to implement some version of it while also using Anthony High in a WR role like I did early on this year.
I haven't given a ton of thought into the QB situation for next year, but like I said before, it will be very hard for me to bench a 3-year starter in his senior season after he led us to back-to-back conference titles and hopefully 2 straight bowl wins.Click here to read my dynasty report:

TOP: During a 40-27 victory against Tulsa in week 12 this year, RB Orleans Darkwa capped off a 9-yard third quarter touchdown run with a triumphant dive into the end zone to extend his team's lead to 34-14. TULANE CONTINUES TO MAKE WAVES NATIONALLY AS PAIR TAKES HOME FOUR OF NATION'S TOP AWARDS
Senior RB Orleans Darkwa wins Walker and Camp Awards | Freshman OLB Mark Richards' fantastic rookie season lands him Bednarik and Nagurski Awards
By Erin Andrews, courtesy ESPN.com
Tulane's status on the national radar has received a significant boost over the course of the past few seasons under head coach D. Geezy. It was only a matter of time before individual players began to receive recognition. That happened over the course of this past week as senior RB Orleans Darkwa and freshman OLB Mark Richards took home four of the nation's top individual prizes.
ORLEANS DARKWA
Darkwa, who has rushed 285 times for a nation-high 1,788 yards and 15 touchdowns & and has also added a career-high 36 receptions for 563 yards and 8 touchdowns, won the Doak Walker Award (Best RB) and the Walter Camp Award (Player of the Year).
He is the school's first winner of both awards.
The Walter Camp Award is given annually to the collegiate American football Player of the Year, as decided by a group of National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I-A head coaches and sports information directors under the auspices of the Walter Camp Football Foundation; the award is named for Walter Camp, a progenitor of the sport.
The Doak Walker Award, first awarded in 1990, honors the United States' top college football running back. It is named after the Southern Methodist and Detroit Lions football player Doak Walker.
The Nashville native's senior season received an exclamation point in his team's 35-16 Conference USA Championship game victory over Marshall, when he surpassed former Green Wave RB Mewelde Moore as the school's career-leading rusher with 4,383 yards, which is also a Conference USA record. He needs just two touchdowns in the team's Liberty Bowl game this week versus Louisiana Monroe to surpass former Green Wave RB Matt Forté as the team's all-time career touchdown scorer. Forte had 38, Darkwa currently stands at 37.
Both Moore (2003) and Forté (2007) were finalists for the Walker and Camp awards during their senior seasons.
Darkwa was also chosen as a 1st Team All-American, and is projected to go in the early 2nd round of the NFL draft, according to ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper, Jr.
"I can't say enough about how much Orleans has meant to our program," said Tulane head coach D. Geezy.
"This school has had some great running backs come through throughout the years and he is just the latest addition. Hopefully we can continue this tradition because I know one thing - It sure makes me look like an offensive genius when calling plays.
"This kid, needless to say, will be missed after this season."
MARK RICHARDS
Richards, only a freshman, has racked up a team-high 91 tackles, a nation-high 79 solo tackles, 23 tackles for loss, a team leading 10 sacks (#1 amongst linebackers), 3 interceptions, and 1 touchdown in his rookie season in New Orleans. The LaPlace, Louisiana native parlayed his spectacular numbers into two top awards; The Chuck Bednarik Award and the Bronco Nagurski Award, which both recognize the nation's top defensive player.
The former 3-star prospect has been a phenom, playing as the "slash" linebacker in Tulane defensive coordinator/assistant head coach Charles Kelly's defensive scheme. Richards, 6-4, 237 pounds plays outside linebacker in the team's 3-4 defensive look and also moves to OLB or DE in the team's 4-man front sets. He typically is used as an edge rusher on passing downs, but is also capable of dropping back into coverage.
According to Kiper, based on his freshman season alone, Richards is already considered a high-first round NFL draft pick by his standards.
"By the time this kid graduates and if he stays healthy, mark my words, he will be a top 3 pick in his respective draft," said Kiper.
The Bronko Nagurski Trophy has been awarded annually since 1993 to the collegiate American football player adjudged by the membership of the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) to be the best defensively in the National Collegiate Athletic Association; the award is presented by the Charlotte Touchdown Club and the FWAA. The award is named for Bronko Nagurski, who played football for the University of Minnesota and the Chicago Bears.
The award requires all candidates to be a.) in good academic standing, and b.) on schedule to graduate within one year of students in their eligibility classification.
The Chuck Bednarik Award is presented annually to the defensive collegiate football player adjudged by the Maxwell Football Club to be the best in the United States. Voters for the Maxwell College Awards are NCAA Head College Football Coaches, members of the Maxwell Football Club & sportswriters and sportscasters from across the country. The award is named after former NFL linebacker and center, Chuck Bednarik.
Richards joins former Green Wave FS Shakiel Smith (2012) as the school's only other Bednarik Award winner, accomplishing the feat with him in back-to-back years.
Richards, like Darkwa, was also named a 1st team All-American.
"Mark is probably the most talented player I have ever coached," said Kelly.
"It is amazing to me that this kid was only a 3-star recruit. Talk about underrated.
"He is the very definition of a late bloomer and I am glad we targeted him early and got him in here. I bet there are a lot of schools that wished they had scouted this kid harder."

Goodness, Richards has had a phenomenal season.....and as a 3 star freshman, that is impressive.....the guys in the Tulane scouting department deserve a raise for that find
And Orleans Darkwa, (gotta love that name) the growth on him as been tremendous
Excellent writeup sir
Orleans Darkwa was definitely destined to play football in the Big Easy.
Originally posted by cheese2121Great write up. It will be sad to Darkwa go, but it looks like the next player on the depth chart should be ready to step in and fill the position. Richards is already scary good, can you imagine what he will be like when he is a junior or senior. Good luck in the bowl game. If you can control the tempo of the game, I feel like it should be a pretty easy win
As for the bowl game, the only worry for me is that we come out flat and let ULM get an early lead and control the tempo with the aggressive no-huddle. We need to get a good couple of early drives to set the tone and get momentum on our side.
Hey man...It's 2013. She wanted to expand herself (why did I enjoy typing that so much?).
Originally posted by CLWGeezy got the Green Wave back on track. Nice work!
Crazy....I had no idea that a 3-star could be a 78. It is amazing that we were able to get him over bigger schools.
Originally posted by Black CaesarRichards will be key to your continued success and hopeful SEC invite. If only I could download your Tulane team to replace Tulane in my LSU dynasty so I could play the Battle for the Rag.
Sorry man...Been a busy week in the Geezy household (son's playoff football game, sick daughter, son's school science project, going to an NBA game tonight, etc.). I plan to play it this afternoon maybe and the result should be posted tomorrow sometime hopefully.

TOP: Tulane QB Curtis Byrd connects with RB Orleans Darkwa on a wheel route in which the senior runner burned Warhawks sophomore MLB Darius Jefferson for a 62-yard touchdown that made the score 17-7 in the first half. BOTTOM: Darkwa made history on the first play of the third quarter when he burst through the line and used his blazing speed to get past the secondary on his way to an 86-yard touchdown that made the score 41-7. On the play, Darkwa became Tulane's all-time leading rushing touchdown scorer with 40 touchdowns, surpassing former Wave RB Matt Forté, who had 39 during his career . By the time the day was over, the new school record stood at 42 as Darkwa added two more second half touchdowns.
DARKWA'S DAY
RB Orleans Darkwa has career performance, breaks another school record in his final game at Tulane as Wave cruises past ULM 55-7 to win second consecutive Liberty Bowl | Senior rushes for a career-high 264 yards and accounts for a whopping 6 total touchdowns as Tulane rolls to a 10-4 finish | Two-time defending Conference USA Champions overpower Warhawks in every phase of the game
Memphis, TN -- The Tulane Green Wave used a 24-point second quarter to pull away from the ULM Warhawks in an eventual 55-7 blowout win in the 2013 Liberty Bowl. Green Wave senior RB Orleans Darkwa, playing in his final game at Tulane, stole the show and accounted for 342 yards from scrimmage and 6 total touchdowns, both career-highs. His 264 rushing yards were also a career-high, as well as his 4 rushing touchdowns.
The Green Wave (10-4) fired on all cylinders the entirety of the game and overwhelmed ULM (8-5) with its multiple offensive personnel packages. Tulane finished with 573 total offensive yards, which includes 320 rushing yards.
In addition to Darkwa, QB Curtis Byrd played one of his finer games of the season. The junior signal-caller went 14 of 20 for 253 yards and 3 touchdowns. His 9-yard touchdown completion to senior WR Wilson Van Hooser just before halftime made the score 31-7.
The Warhawks would fumble the ensuing kickoff and Tulane FS Will Washington recovered the ball with 0:02 left at the 11-yard line. The big play set up a 28-yard field goal by senior PK Jonathan Ginsburgh which made the score 34-7 at halftime.
"I know we won big, but I thought that the sequence there at the end of the half sort of took all of the wind out of ULM's sails, so to speak," said Tulane head coach D. Geezy.
The Green Wave would put the game away, if it wasn't already no longer in doubt, on the very first play of the second half. Darkwa took a handoff from Byrd and raced 86 yards for a record-breaking touchdown which made him the school's all-time leader in rushing touchdowns, surpassing former Green Wave RB Matt Forté (2004-2007), who had 39 during his career. The touchdown was Darkwa's 40th, and he finished with 42 career touchdowns after running in two more scores.
Darkwa, who already held the team and Conference USA record for career rushing yards, finishes the year with 2,052 yards, just 75 yards shy of Forté's single season school record.
Darkwa wasn't the only senior who stepped up in his final game at Tulane. Stud OLB Kerchal Byrd had a second half sack of ULM QB Kolton Browning and finished with 4 tackles on the day. Senior CB Kendrick Washington also contributed with a first half fumble recovery. And as mentioned before, Van Hooser had a big play, hauling in a 9-yard touchdown reception in the first half, his final catch as a member of the Green Wave.
Browning struggled to get the Warhawks' offense going and finished with only 181 passing yards, a very low total for his team's spread, no-huddle offensive attack. He had 104 passing yards in the first quarter but was stuffed the remainder of the game.
WR Hassan Tidwell, who was once recruited heavily by Geezy in 2010, his first season at Tulane, was Browning's main target and hauled in 5 receptions for 66 yards and 1 touchdowns.
In the end though, it would not be enough.
"It was great to go out with a win like this for these seniors," said Geezy.
"This is a hell of a way to finish the year and build momentum going into next season. This was our second straight bowl win, a first at Tulane. This was our second straight conference championship season, another first at Tulane. And lastly, this was our very first time having back-to-back double-digit win seasons here at Tulane.
"It won't get any easier from here on out. We'll have a target on our backs from here starting with next season and I look forward to the off-season and getting ourselves ready for what lies ahead."

Thanks man...He has set a whole new standard for Tulane running backs.
And I agree with you on Byrd. It will be difficult to sit a 3-year starter in his senior season.
Originally posted by cheese2121Amazing win man, UL-Monroe didn't even look in the same league as you. It looked like practice for Darkwa, a fitting end to his Tulane career though. I'm excited to see what the offense will bring, I can't wait to see that four star halfback reggie on the field. Hopefully the big bowl win can help you finish up recruiting with a bang. And I have to personally say, I am pretty sure we will be seeing Byrd under center next play and hopefully High with his many talents will be seen all over the field.
I haven't had a lot of success so far this dynasty with off-season recruiting. Hopefully I can nab another 4-star or two.
Orleans has set a high standard for Reggie Moore. Honestly though, I think Moore shatters his records.
Originally posted by DyNastyDarkwa! The dude is amazing. Great win, you got some big decisions to make next season in the quarterback department.
He will definitely be missed man. I wish I had used him more in the early-going of this dynasty. He was without a doubt a stud. Believe it or not though, I think my next RB will be even better.Click here to read my dynasty report:
