Trappers offer a few more, get first commit in school history

Portland and Coach Johnny Shaw got great news on Friday afternoon, as defensive end prospect Jeff Hill called to announce that he would be transferring in the spring to play football. The 1* prospect Hill is a 6'3" defensive monster who is playing this season at Div-III Plymouth State University in New Hampshire. Hill will only have one year of eligibility left to play at Portland, but he should help anchor the defensive line for the Trappers.

In addition to nabbing Hill, the Trappers offered a couple more scholarships to potential commits;

Cecil Smart, JUCO 1* HB, Graniteville, VT
Just like Hill, Cecil is also a junior, meaning he will only have one year of eligibility when and if he commits. At 5'10" and 170lbs Smart is not a big running back at all, and will have trouble running the ball up the middle. He is a pure speed back who excels on sweeps and quick pitches to the outside.

Thomas Boyd, 2* FB/HB, Winslow, ME
At 6'1" and 243lbs Thomas easily fits the mold of a fullback. Run blocks well, but has trouble with his pass blocking. Boyd is a guy he sees the holes well and could easily fill in as a goal line and short yardage back for the Trappers.
Scouts Initial Rating: 66

Jason Johnson, 1* DT, Windsor, CN
Jason has the size of an NFL nose guard at 6'6" and 315lbs and should have no trouble filling the middle of the defensive line in a 3-4 or 4-3 system. He's a step or two slower than most guys at his position, but is a sure tackler with strong arms and legs. Coming from Canada he'll have to adapt to the 11-man game, but is a smart kid and it shouldn't be much of an issue for him.
Scouts Initial Rating: 54

Sam Tyree, 1* DT, Sayville, NY
At 6'3" and 288lbs Sam is a true pass rushing defensive tackle. He has good hands and a nose for the football. This is a guy that could play inside easily, but also has the speed to shift outside and play defensive end.
Scouts Initial Rating: 53
