South Carolina freshman QB Melvin Mitchell broke CB George Wilson's tackle and then showed off his speed on this 96-yard touchdown run on an option play that got the scoring spree started for the Gamecocks and gave them an early 7-0 lead.
Atlanta, GA -- #18 Tulane marched into the Georgia Dome, feeling right at home, having been there and winning SEC titles in each of the past five seasons, including two title game wins over Saturday's opponent, South Carolina. But the tables turned on them rather quickly this time around, as the 20th ranked Gamecocks put on an offensive scoring clinic on their way to a 48-24 upset win in Atlanta. Gamecocks true freshman QB Melvin Mitchell, who has not lost since taking over as the team's starter in week 4 due to an injury to previous starter Brian Davis, ended up the star of the afternoon. He finished the game with over 300 yards and 3 touchdowns via passing and rushing combined despite only playing three quarters.

QB Melvin Mitchell accounted for 320 total yards and 3 touchdowns while leading his team to their 10th straight win after taking over as the Gamecocks' starting quarterback.
Mitchell got the scoring started for his team early in the first quarter. On the very first play following Tulane P Danny Allen's punt that went out of bounds at the South Carolina 4-yard line, the Gamecocks called an option play and Mitchell kept it. After breaking Green Wave CB George Wilson's tackle attempt, there was nothing but green in front of him and the freshman star in the making raced 96 yards unimpeded the rest of the way for a touchdown, giving his team a 7-0 lead in emphatic fashion.
"We decided to do a double-inside linebacker blitz in that spot, thinking we had a chance at a safety and they called the perfect play call," said Tulane defensive coordinator Steve Ellis.
Two possessions later, following another Allen punt, Tulane would finally get some fortune. After a dropped pass from Mitchell to WR Charles Campbell was ruled a lateral and it was recovered by Green Wave star CB Nate Allen, Tulane finally got on the board when PK Chris Coleman made a 40-yard field goal to make the score 7-3.
The Green Wave would force a punt on the Gamecocks' next drive, but then disaster struck. QB Jimmy Williams scrambled into Gamecocks territory, picking up first down yardage and putting his team in position to take the lead, however he was stripped of the football and South Carolina recovered at their 41-yard line, setting them up in prime position to put more points up. The Gamecocks would go on a 12-play 52-yard drive that last 3:12 and got a 24-yard field goal PK Abdul Morse to extend their lead to 10-3.
Later, in the second quarter, Mitchell's 11-yard touchdown pass to WR Mark Henley extended the Gamecocks' lead to 17-3 with 4:48 remaining in the half.

South Carolina DT Robert Guerrero was a force on Saturday, finishing the game with a sack along with an interception.
In what became a theme for the day, the Tulane defense was once again unable to get off the field on third down and seemed helpless as the Gamecocks went on a 7-play 79-yard drive that lasted 1:04 and culminated with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Mitchell to TE Mark Harrison that made the score 24-10 with just 0:36 to go in the half. South Carolina finished the game 11 of 16 on third downs while Tulane failed to convert a single third down, finishing 0 of 8.
"Aside from the turnovers, that really was the story of this game," said Tulane head coach D. Geezy.
"We couldn't get off the field on third downs and since we couldn't run the ball well, we found ourselves in third and long all game and couldn't convert. They just had long drive after long drive."
Tulane's first half woes were not over following Harrison's touchdown reception. On Tulane's next possession, Williams would throw his first of two interceptions on the day when he was hit as he threw by junior DE James Leak, who finished the game with two sacks. The ball would end up being caught by sophomore DT Robert Guerrero, setting South Carolina up with the ball at the Tulane 47-yard line with 0:13 to go in the half.
Morse's season-high 64-yard field goal as the first half clock expired made the score 27-10 going into the break.

Just before halftime, QB Jimmy Williams was unable to escape pressure from DE James Leak and DT Robert Guerrero. Leak hit Williams as he threw and the ball fluttered into the awaiting hands of Guerrero, putting the Gamecocks in position to kick a field goal that made the score 27-10 at halftime.
Tulane got the ball first in the second half, hoping to cut into their deficit, but once again went three and out. And once again, South Carolina (10-3, 7-2) went on a long drive.
This time, a 10-play 79-yard drive that lasted 2:35 ended with a 5-yard touchdown run by RB Andre Andrews that made the score 34-10. Andrews finished with 20 carries for 109 yards and his short touchdown run put the Green Wave into desperation mode.
On their very next offensive play following Andrews' score, Williams hit Jean on another deep pass. This time the sophomore stud caught a pass over CB Clifton Madsen, facing Jean in place of inactive injured star CB Austin Jones, and the Heisman candidate took it 85 yards for another touchdown, cutting the Tulane deficit to 34-17. Jean finished the game with 5 receptions for a game-high 214 yards and two touchdowns.

Pretty much the only bright spot on the day for Tulane was the play of WR Ryan Jean, who finished with 5 receptions for 214 yards and two touchdowns before leaving the game at the end of the third quarter due to injury.
The Green Wave would catch a break late in the third quarter when Mitchell exited the game with a strained triceps muscle with under a minute to go in the third quarter. Following a long drive directed by Mitchell that penetrated into the red zone, Gamecocks backup QB Keith Brown threw an interception on his very first play in place of Mitchell, to Wilson.
Williams would hit Jean for a 47-yard completion on the very next play following the turnover, however Jean was injured on the play (strained triceps) and was unable to return to the game. The 4-play 76-yard drive would end with Williams' 9-yard touchdown pass to WR Jared Reese to tighten the score up at 34-24, but Jean's injury took the wind out of the Green Wave sails.
"We are down by 10 at that point but I'd be lying if I was to say the team didn't get down after seeing '81' have to go to the locker room," said Geezy.
Despite Mitchell's injury, South Carolina's offense would not skip a beat. Brown directed a 10-play 90-yard drive on his team's next possession following his turnover, concluding it with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Henley to all but put the game away at 41-24 with 6:57 to play.
Without their star receiver, Williams and the Tulane offense looked lost and never scored again the rest of the way. After Williams threw his second interception of the game, this one to FS Joe Dawson, the Gamecocks would put the game away for good when Brown hit WR Cliff Benson for a 6-yard touchdown that made the score 48-24 with 4:39 to go. Brown finished the game 10 of 14 for 128 yards and 2 touchdowns in relief of Mitchell, giving South Carolina a total of 379 passing yards on the afternoon, a season-high for Ellis' defensive squad.
In fact, it was a historically bad day for Ellis and the Green Wave defensive unit - South Carolina's 607 total offensive yards as a team is the most ever given up by the Green Wave defense in Geezy's 11 years as the team's head coach. Their previous high was 588, which was achieved by Tulsa in a 38-24 loss back in 2010, Geezy's first year with the team.

OLB Calvin McGuire and the South Carolina defense harassed QB Jimmy Williams all game long, sacking him 4 times on the day and forcing him into 3 turnovers.
"They have so much speed at receiver and had our guys running in circles with the way they ran their offense. We thought we had an advantage with (Tulane offensive coordinator) Steve (Spurrier) being on our side and helping us learn the South Carolina offense, but obviously today they did a better job with it than we did running it or stopping it."
The loss marks Geezy's first ever loss in a conference championship game as Tulane's head coach, dating all the way back to when they were members of Conference USA. The loss also marks another first - South Carolina is the SEC's first champion not named Tulane or Alabama since 2008 (Tulane had won the previous 5 championships while Alabama won the previous 6 before that).
"This was a remarkable run that you knew would end at some point but we obviously didn't see it happening today," said Geezy.
"Give South Carolina credit. They're a great, up and coming football team and haven't lost since mid-September. We play them each of these next two years coming up and we look forward to hopefully seeing them again in Atlanta at some point."
Prior to Saturday, Tulane (10-3, 7-2) had not lost more than two games in a season since 2014 when they finished 10-4. The team now awaits to hear its bowl destination, though they already know they will not be playing in a BCS Bowl for the first time since that 2014 season, when they lost to Texas 42-34 in the AT&T Cotton Bowl in Arlington.
"There is no sugar-coating this," said Geezy.
"We are upset with how this season has gone and we are upset with not winning some sort of a championship for the first time since '14. We have this bowl game to play, but I must admit, we are looking forward to the off-season and trying to right this ship.
"No disrespect to the Cotton Bowl, the Outback Bowl, or wherever we end up, but we play for championships here. We put ourselves in this position and we now face the long road of digging ourselves out of it."

Defensive coordinator Steve Ellis exits the field flanked by members of the Wave defense after watching
his unit surrender an embarrassing 607 yards of total offense in Saturday's championship game.
