Speed Ratings - MLB The Show 16

SCEA does an excellent job assigning ratings to the players and updating them on their weekly roster updates but i think they need to do something with a lot of players that are known speedsters or players that we know have good or decent speed and yet they have low or inaccurate speed ratings. I know speed is one of the toughest ratings to get right, you shouldn't use Stolen Base numbers for speed ratings because theres a lot of factors that impact SB opportunities/success (Spot in the order, player ability to read pitchers etc) for example: Since Mike Trout was moved to the 3rd spot his SB numbers have gone way down not because he is slower but because as a #3 hitter a lot of times he is going to bat in the first inning with 2 outs, another is you can't risk being thrown out with Pujols batting. Speed is something that should be measured by time, MPH, Top Speed and Acceleration (home to first, around the bases, 1st to 3rd, 60 yards etc) but as of today we don't have easy access to a reliable source, Statcast is the perfect tool let's hope they create or release charts/lists with the speed stats of MLB players.

I have updated some players based on my knowledge, scouting reports etc, they are not going to be perfect but i feel that they are better, I will be editing this post and continue to add players to the list.

Having watched Markakis for a bunch of years in Baltimore, his 50 speed is legit. When he first came up, he would have earned a 65-70, but he's definitely lost a few steps over the years.

Buxton an 83?? He scored an 80 on the 20 to 80 scouting scale? That's a joke for one of the fastest and best young defenders.

Agreed. Buxton and Trout should both be 99.

I'd give Billy Burns a look, SCEA has him at 84 currently but according to Statcast data he's fastest from home to 1st on average in the league.

I'm not sure whats worse, Buxton's speed rating or Carlos Gonzalez's 94 for durability. Where do they get these numbers from? It's absolutely baffling to me. It's a joke year after year.

Andrew McCutchen is even faster than you have him. Not a player I've seen can turn it on from first to third on a triple like Cutch. Polanco is a low 80.. Accurate. But Cutch is definitely faster than Polanco. Cutch should be around 88, IMO. At least! That could be under.

Interesting data and thanks for posting it. But, one problem this type of data has is comparing LH and RH hitters directly as if they are on equal footing. LH batters get a slight head start, which can amount to a few hundredths of a second to a tenth of a second advantage running to 1st. As you can see, that would make a difference in the rankings.

Maybe a better way to do it would be looking at 1st to 3rd times or 2nd to home times.

Can't wait for more statcast data to become public so we can use it to better rate players.

Agreed, not the best form of comparison but it's what we got at the moment. Burns is a switch hitter, as is Billy Hamilton, so they get that benefit of coming out of the LHH batter's box some of the time. It would be interesting to see how each player's RH time compares. Anyway, I'm not saying Burns should be a 99 or anything but 80 grade speed usually means something above 84 is all, that's why I suggested someone give it a look.

"Buxton topped out at 21.39 mph on his triple, per Statcast™.
For context, Jarrod Dyson topped out at 21.03 on a triple on May 10, and Billy Hamilton topped out at 20.98 on a triple on May 13."

Buxton should be 99 based on article

Top speed doesn't say everything, Kris Bryant top speed is almost like Trout but his acceleration is way slower.

That's true...but Buxton is likely one of the fastest players in any facet of the MLB. I might edit his speed to the mid 90's.

Brandon Phillips was 23/26 in SB last year. Giving him a 55 speed rating is just brutal.
