Game 10, Year 13 Preview (2022 season): #8 Tulane at South Carolina

    GAME 10 PREVIEW

Latest Line (courtesy Bovada - Las Vegas):

    ....................10 1/2....................

2021: Former Tulane star CB Nate Hall's interception in the end zone midway through the second quarter kept his team's deficit at 24-14 in last season's contest. | Former Green Wave star WR Ryan Jean burned the Gamecocks secondary all afternoon, catching 6 passes for 130 yards and 2 touchdowns in last season's contest.

Last Meeting: After falling behind 31-21 to #20 South Carolina, #8 Tulane reeled off 31 unanswered points en route to a 52-31 statement victory last season at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Then-true freshman QB Bryce Allen threw for 396 yards and 4 touchdowns while then-junior RB Buck Johnson III rushed for 101 yards and 2 scores. Tulane's top 2 receivers, the now-departed legendary Ryan Jean and current sophomore Brandon McIntyre, torched the Gamecocks for 11 receptions for 256 yards and 3 touchdowns combined as the Wave rolled to 4-0 on the year and avenged their SEC title game loss to South Carolina from the previous season.

2020: Just before halftime, former Green Wave QB Jimmy Williams was unable to escape pressure from former South Carolina DE James Leak and current-senior DT Robert Guerrero. Leak hit Williams as he threw and the ball fluttered into the awaiting hands of Guerrero, putting the Gamecocks in position to kick a field goal that made the score 27-10 at halftime.

Last Meeting II: In one of the biggest upsets in SEC Championship Game history, then-#20 ranked South Carolina blew out then-#18 ranked Tulane 48-24 two seasons ago in Atlanta. The Green Wave, who had won each of the previous 5 SEC titles, were overwhelmed by the Gamecocks defense and the play of South Carolina true freshman QB Melvin Mitchell. Mitchell, who now serves as the Gamecocks' backup quarterback, accounted for 320 total yards and 3 total touchdowns as his team amassed a 34-10 lead that Tulane was never able to overcome. His performance helped hand the Gamecocks its first ever Southeastern Conference championship. The 607 total offensive yards the Green Wave gave up were the most ever given up during Geezy's 13+ year tenure at Tulane.

2017: Facing a 1st and 30 following two holding penalties early in the third quarter, former Wave QB Jamie Manning found former star RB Reggie Moore, lined up wide at receiver, for this 76-yard touchdown strike on a fly route which put the proverbial nail in the Gamecocks' coffin. The touchdown hookup by two former Tulane legends made the score 38-9 and put the exclamation point on a four touchdown performance by the eventual Heisman trophy winner Moore.

Last Meeting at Venue: In the midst of his 2017 Heisman Trophy winning campaign, former Tulane star RB Reggie Moore racked up 201 all-purpose yards and 4 touchdowns as then-#3 ranked Tulane cruised past then-#9 ranked South Carolina in a 41-9 blowout in 2017 at Williams-Brice Stadium. Former Wave star QB Jamie Manning threw for 231 yards and 3 touchdowns, as the defending national champion Green Wave scored 31 points in the first half in a game that was never really close, improving to 10-0 in a year in which they ended up the BCS National runner-ups.

Hey man - thanks for the kind words and for taking the time to respond.

I too enjoy reading other Tulane dynasties, even though they seem to be few and far in between. Will you be posting yours here?

Game 10, Year 13 (2022 season): #8 Tulane Green Wave at South Carolina Gamecocks

              #8 17 -- 8-2 (5-2)
              NR 45 -- 7-3 (5-3)

South Carolina RB Kevin Higgins brings back "The Whip" after a first down carry late in the game that capped off a career-performance by the redshirt senior.

Tulane's championship dreams suffer final, fatal blow as South Carolina cruises in humiliating 45-17 blowout loss | Offense, defense, and special teams all misfire for Green Wave as Gamecocks dominate from start to finish, led by RB Higgins' 200-yard rushing performance | Tulane loss paired with Alabama win gives Crimson Tide SEC West title, ends Wave's 7-year division title streak | After losing consecutive games for the first time in nearly a decade, team will now face Ole Miss next with nothing but pride on the line

Columbia, SC -- Two seasons ago, South Carolina ended Tulane's 5-year reign as SEC Champions, beating them in a 48-24 upset in the 2020 SEC Championship Game. Saturday afternoon, the Gamecocks were dream-killers once again, as they blew away the 8th ranked Green Wave 45-17 in Columbia, ending all hopes of a conference or national championship season for the Wave. South Carolina redshirt senior RB Kevin Higgins, playing in place of injured starting RB Cody Brittain, had a career day, finishing with 268 total yards from scrimmage and 2 touchdowns.

Gamecocks RB Kevin Higgins slashed his way through the Tulane defense for a career-high 210 yards on 29 carries and a touchdown while also adding 58 receiving yards and another score.

The game got off to a very poor start, and it remained mostly downhill from there. PK Chris Coleman's 51-yard field goal miss on Tulane's second possession, his first of two misses on the day, perhaps set the tone for the day.

Following the miss, South Carolina went on a 9-play 66-yard drive which culminated with a 4-yard touchdown run by goal line RB Johnnie Williams which made the score 7-0 late in the first quarter.

Literally seconds later, following a fumble by Tulane RB Buck Johnson III which was recovered by South Carolina at the Wave 23-yard line, Higgins got in on the act. His 7-yard touchdown run with 0:20 to go in the first period capped off a quick two-play drive and made the score 14-0.

On their ensuing drive, the Green Wave finally answered back with a rare score of their own. True freshman RB Deuce Monroe's 27-yard sprint into the end zone completed a 6-play 80-yard drive and made the score 14-7.

Tulane would get another boost of momentum by its defense on South Carolina's next possession. Senior CB Garrett Shuler intercepted QB Brian Davis' option pitch attempt to Higgins early on the Gamecocks' next drive, setting the Wave up in prime position to tie the game or cut more into their deficit. It would not work however as their drive stalled and Coleman missed his second field goal of the day, this time from 46 yards away, and once again, South Carolina took advantage of the resulting momentum shift.

Two touchdown passes by Gamecocks QB Brian Davis - one to WR Eric Hamilton and the other to WR Joel Harley, both in the final minute of the first half, made the score 28-7 and were sandwiched in-between by an interception thrown by Wave QB Bryce Allen to SS Cortez Allen deep in Tulane territory. Davis finished the day 21 of 31 for 268 yards and 4 touchdowns while Hamilton finished with 6 receptions for 104 yards.

South Carolina QB Brian Davis and WR Eric Hamilton both gave the Green Wave fits all game long; here the pair hooks up for a 2-yard touchdown that made the score 21-7.

On a day in which seemingly nothing would go right for the Wave, the team did get a gift when sophomore WR Jason Mason got behind the defense on a busted coverage for an 80-yard touchdown with just 0:05 to go in the first half. Mason, who was the nation's #1 high school wide receiver prospect two years ago, finished the game with a career-high 102 receiving yards and his touchdown cut his team's deficit to 28-14. It would be Tulane's last time penetrating the end zone however.

Early in the third quarter, South Carolina (7-3, 5-3) would score on a booming 56-yard field goal by senior star PK Abdul Morse to extend its lead to 31-14. Then later, following an interception by Gamecocks FS Alex Butler, his first of two on the day, Davis hit Higgins on a fly-pattern for a 33-yard touchdown.

Higgins, who had motioned out on the play to the receiver position and burned Shuler on the play, finished the game with 4 receptions for 58 yards and his touchdown made the score 38-14.

After replacing Allen late in the third quarter due to poor performance, Tulane senior QB Sam Weaver came in for a play and threw yet another interception to Butler and was quickly yanked back out of the game in favor of Allen. Butler's second interception led to a game-sealing 9-yard touchdown pass from Davis to true freshman WR Gary Ward, who like Mason, was the nation's #1 high school wide receiver prospect this past off-season.

ESPN's microphones picked up Gamecocks DE Luke Alexander telling Green Wave reserve RB Tony Tompkins to "go home" after being stuffed behind the line of scrimmage late in the game.
"I'm not going to even lie to you, my head is still spinning; we feel like we ran into a buzz-saw today," said Green Wave head coach D. Geezy, whose team finished just 1 of 9 on third down conversions.

"I thought our work week was solid, but obviously we just didn't get up enough to play today, and that's on me. This was just an unexpected, thorough beat-down."

The loss for Tulane marks the first time since 2014, the year they rejoined the Southeastern Conference following a 48-year absence, that the Green Wave has suffered multiple regular season conference losses. Their dreadful loss on Saturday coupled with Alabama's 17-16 victory over LSU clinches the team's first year without an SEC West division championship since that same 2014 season. The Crimson Tide will now face Florida in the 2022 SEC Championship Game.

The Green Wave's loss also marks the first time since the 2013 season, their final season in Conference USA, that they've lost back to back games - a 30-27 overtime loss to Marshall followed by a 39-34 loss to Georgia Tech, both at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Just like following its loss to Alabama last week, Tulane (8-2, 5-2) now once again goes into a bye week following a loss, giving them two weeks to think about their issues prior to traveling to face Ole Miss (4-5, 1-5) at Oxford. The team knows that at this point however, that they've failed at their two main annual season goals.

"Every year we go into this thing wanting three things - to go unbeaten, to win the SEC, and to ultimately win the national title," said Geezy.

"It’s an eerie feeling knowing that you won't be a part of those conversations anymore this season. We've put ourselves in some unfamiliar territory by piss-poor execution in all phases each of these past two games.

"We really need to look ourselves in the mirror here and figure out how to correct things because this isn't the type of football we're about."

Tulane senior CB Garrett Shuler was the last Green Wave member to walk off the field after watching his team's conference and national title hopes get permanently dashed.

Tulane RB Buck Johnson III was blasted by MLB Reggie Wright and the big hit caused him to fumble, turning the ball over to the Gamecocks who quickly cashed it in to make it 14-0 late in the first quarter.

RB Deuce Monroe darted through the Gamecocks defense for a 27-yard touchdown that made the score 14-7, giving Tulane brief hope.

On South Carolina's next possession after Monroe's score, CB Garrett Shuler intercepted QB Brian Davis' option pitch. However the turnover would not lead to points as Green Wave PK Chris Coleman missed a 46-yard field goal on the ensuing drive.

For the second time in four seasons, DT Robert Guerrero gave Tulane fits as the senior lineman finished the game with 2 sacks on the day.

True freshman CB Tyler Harrison is puzzled by his squad's defensive breakdown on this 12-yard touchdown pass to WR Joel Harley that made the score 28-7 late in the second quarter.

Sophomore WR Jason Mason's career-long 80-yard touchdown cut his team's deficit to 28-14 with just 0:05 remaining in the first half and seemed to give the Wave momentum going into the break.

The back of Eric Hamilton's jersey was a familiar sight for typically-stout Green Wave CB Josh Warren (#24). Hamilton finished the game with 6 receptions for 104 yards and a touchdown.

After going in motion to the receiver position, RB Kevin Higgins got behind confused senior CB Garrett Shuler for a 33-yard touchdown that made the score 38-14 in the third quarter.

Higgins dragged Tulane senior DE Chad McGuire for a first down in the game closing moments.

Higgins' 268 yards from scrimmage and 2 scores were enough for him to win Player of the Game honors.

Unfortunately it seems as if this team allowed Alabama to beat them twice. They never got up for this one after the loss to the Tide last week and it showed. The new goal should be to upset the rival Golden Eagles of Southern Miss to add a little excitement and give some meaning to the season.

P.S. - That small picture of Higgins on the right side of the page with the glare coming off of his visor looks gorgeous!

Didn't expect to come on to read about two loses, that last one was ugly indeed.

Let's hope you can get back on track and not be a wasted season.

Echoing the sentiments of other comments, that was expected yet still unexpected. The Alabama loss definitely caused a hangover but at the same time South Carolina has never let Tulane roll over them. The Southern Miss game is going to be huge not just for playing spoiler but for team morale as well. Photos look great though lol.

I know you've said you wanted to be more team oriented with Jean gone, but someone is going to have to take the mantle and lead this team. Bryce, Buck, Deuce, LeCharles...someone.
