Game 1, Year 15 Preview (2024 season): #14 Tulane Green Wave at #12 Boise St. Broncos

    GAME 1 PREVIEW

Latest Line (courtesy Bovada - Las Vegas):

    ....................6 1/2....................

2023: Tulane fans were left wondering "what the heck happened" as Boise St. players celebrated on the Superdome turf following an unexpectedly easy opening day win for the Broncos last season in New Orleans.

Last Meeting: In what was the first ever meeting between the two schools, then-#9 Boise St. pulled off an opening week upset in rather convincing fashion, blowing away then-#6 Tulane 44-17 last season at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on opening day. Following then-sophomore DE Thomas Gordon's 12-yard interception return touchdown less than two minutes into the game, the visiting Broncos stormed out to a 21-3 first quarter lead and never looked back. Green Wave QB Bryce Allen had what many would call the worst game of his collegiate career, as he threw 4 interceptions and a lost fumble before being benched in the second quarter. The loss ended a 10-game opening week winning streak for the Green Wave, who prior to the contest had also won 57 of their last 58 games played on their home turf.

    2023 Season Recaps:

: After coming into last season with national championship aspirations, Tulane finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 10-4 record and ranked #20 in the final Coaches Poll after defeating Iowa 47-31 in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando, Florida. The team got off to a horrid 0-2 start last season, their worst start in 13 years, and injuries to starting QB Bryce Allen and #1 WR Brandon McIntyre at mid-season further derailed their year, which included a 36-17 blowout loss to eventual national champion Florida in the SEC Championship Game. Looking to get back into the national title picture this season, the team returns 8 starters on offense and 7 on defense.

: A consistent double-digit win team, Boise St. finished last season with a 10-2 record. Despite the impressive record, the Broncos' year ended in disappointment, as they failed to win the Mountain West Conference due to a 26-19 overtime loss to TCU in week 5 of last season, and would go on to get shutout by USC 31-0 in the Rose Bowl to close out the year. Boise St. returns 6 starters on offense, including starting QB Joel Shaw, its top RB Ben Moore, and its top WR Michael Meyer, along with 6 starters on defense.

    Schedules/Results:

    Head Coach D. Geezy's Take

You'd always hate to admit this as a head coach, but last year, in hindsight, I felt like not enough emphasis was placed on this game. We allowed ourselves to get too comfortable and took an opening week home win against a non-BCS conference opponent as a given, even with them being ranked in the top 10 coming in last year. We now know not to ever make that mistake again, and we are preparing for this game, and all others, as if our whole season is on the line. Every week is a playoff game in this business and you'll never see us come in complacent again like we did a year ago.

This bunch returns a lot of their star power, and that starts at QB with Joel Shaw (96 ovr). Our primary focus defensively will be disrupting him and hopefully coming away with some sacks and turnovers.

For us, we really didn't do a good job of protecting the quarterback or protecting the football a season ago, and correcting that's going to be key not only this week, but all season long. We want to establish the run early in this one and also get Bryce (Allen) rolling with some short, high percentage passes. Thankfully, DE Daniel Muhammad is no longer on their roster, as he really gave us fits last year, racking up 5 sacks.

This is a hostile environment we are stepping into this weekend and we know that this Boise St. team is out to prove that last year was no fluke.

Both teams look very even on paper and after what they did to you last year in The Dome they must feel like getting you on the Smurf Turf should be an easy win. Here's to hoping you guys can start the season on the same note Boise State started their's last year!

Thank goodness Muhammad decided to leave early. That game last season against you might have launched his NFL career. Their offense looks very talented lead by Shaw and Ben Moore. Is Willie Irvin a distant relative of Michael Irvin sporting that #88 jersey?

Their defense looks very solid as well, with Gordon being the most pressing concern. I think being able to control the pressure and keeping Allen upright will go a long way to deciding this one.

I am very excited to see the new defense and players unveiled. Let's get that win!

I always feel sad when I see the old ncaa games. They have that nice preview feature with the "Tulane has a tough test on the road this week in #12 Boise State." This is something I wish they put into madden.

This game should be super exciting. Let's go Wave!

Strong words from Coach Geezy to admit Tulane was complacent going into the Boise State game last year. Looking at the rosters, you guys are pretty even. Allen has the better weapons in my opinion, but it's going to be hard to throw over the top of Brown and Dawson. If I had to make a prediction, I'd say 34-30 Tulane.

Wow, seems like I have A LOT of catching up to do! But that can't be a bad thing, I'm sure there's a reason this has been going on for so long and I'm excited to be able to read all these reports and catch up.

I'll be sure to follow this, looks amazing! Good luck against Boise State!

Yeah...it's only a video game, but those guys definitely brought a different sort of swagger to our game than other teams did. I am not going to lie, I am a bit intimidated, knowing what they did to us last year and us now going into their house with their unique blue playing surface.

I am expecting a close, hard fought game though. I can't tell you just how pumped I am for this one, especially after not playing a game in several weeks.

I was relieved after seeing Muhammad left school early while at the same time disappointed. I was looking forward to a shot at redemption/revenge against him. Oh well. Gordon had a nice game versus us last year too though, including the play that pretty much took all of the air out of us just seconds into the game (a pick-six that we never recovered from).

Nice catch on Willie Irvin. We're on the same page there (as usual). He was originally #87, but with a name like that I just had to changed him to 88, so good eye there! Don't overlook Jonathan Ginn sportin' his cousin Ted's #7 either! lol

I think not turning the ball over and getting Tony Tompkins going early will go a long way in deciding this one. Nothing would make me feel better than to return the favor and blow these guys away like they did us, but I am expecting a good, close game and will be grateful for a 'W' in any way that it comes.

You're right man; those in-game headlines add so much immersion to dynasty mode. These latter-year NCAA games are timeless, and that's a big part of the reason why.

I prefer college football for my video gaming, but I am definitely an all-NFL guy as far as real life and miss Madden. I'd say my favorite game menu presentation of all-time was the Madden that had the Tony Bruno radio show that updated based on what's happening in your franchise.

And who could forget this bad boy from Madden 2000:

Yeah I had to put that part about being complacent out there; I remember that game like it was yesterday. I just didn't put the same level of preparation for it that I typically would, especially for a game 1. I think I underestimated them as a worthy opponent, with them being from the Mountain West Conference. I needed to prepare for that game as if it was a playoff game and didn't.

I am with you and see a high-scoring game. Defensive coordinator Karl Dunbar has a tall task ahead of him in his debut as this Boise team is loaded.

I have definitely accounted for those stud safeties in our game plan. In this one, it will be all about the short passing game, unless we catch them slipping and can get one of our wide receivers matched up one-on-one downfield versus their slow nickel back Ricky Broussard (79 spd).

I must say that this dynasty has gone on far longer than I could have ever imagined. There's no way I would have ever thought, back in July of 2010, that I'd still be playing this thing 7 years later (albeit with a long break for a few years). Before this dynasty, I think my longest one was 6 seasons, and here we are heading into year 15.

I truly found the perfect team to play with (a team from my hometown, where I can recruit in cities I have heard of), a perfect, unique stadium to play in, and I got invited to the perfect conference to keep things competitive long term. With all of the history built up, this thing has turned into its own fantasy universe. I wish all of my dynasty reporting brothers can make it this deep into a dynasty, because I can't express enough just how much more rewarding it becomes this many seasons in.

I must also say that I feel very honored that you registered to this site and a reply to my dynasty thread was your first post here. I appreciate you taking the time to check and I am glad to have you on board.

And with all that said...time to turn on the XBOX and kick off Coach Geezy's season #15!

Editor's Note: As many of you already know, apparently Photobucket is having some major problems and that's why my images and several other posters' images haven't shown up in the past several days. However the show must go on, so I will be using IMGUR for my reports moving forward until the issue is resolved. Unfortunately we will just have to live with the fact that all of my previous work in this thread is pretty much unreadable for the time being.

                    #1449
Game 1, Year 15 (2024 season): #14 Tulane Green Wave at #12 Boise St. Broncos

                    #14 27 -- 1-0
                    #12 10 -- 0-1

Tulane QB Bryce Allen was hit dead-center on his throwing shoulder by Boise St. DE Thomas Gordon, knocking him out of the game. The shoulder was the same one which caused him to miss the majority of the second half of last season due to a torn labrum.

#14 Tulane gets payback versus #12 Boise St. in 27-10 opening day win, but celebration subdued as senior QB Allen re-injures throwing shoulder; Geezy says update on status should be available later in the week | New DC Dunbar's debut successful as Green Wave collects 4 sacks and 3 turnovers in strong defensive performance | DB Smith has monster game in hybrid safety/cornerback role, finishing with 19 tackles and several impact plays | Team may have to turn to redshirt freshman QB McBride for next week's tilt at #11 TCU, and perhaps beyond

Boise, ID -- Last season, Boise St. DE Thomas Gordon's 12-yard interception return for a touchdown less than two minutes into the game set the tone for the then-#9 ranked Broncos to blow away then-#6 Tulane 44-17 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on opening day, and in effect, set the tone for the Green Wave's season. One year later, Gordon's play on the field was not enough for Boise St. to overcome a dominant performance by Tulane which led to a 27-10 victory by the visiting team Saturday night at Albertson's Stadium, but a hit he delivered late in the second quarter could very well alter the course of the Wave's season once again.

Redshirt freshman QB Jimmy McBride, who many believe is being groomed to start once senior Bryce Allen leaves after this season, may now be thrust into the driver's seat of the Green Wave offense sooner than expected.

Following the Wave's opening week victory on Boise's famed "Smurf Turf," the mood in the visitor's locker room was subdued as the team awaits word on once-again injured QB Bryce Allen (94 ovr). Allen, who missed most of the second half of last season with a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder, was injured late in the second quarter when Gordon hit him right on the same shoulder just as the now-senior former blue chip prospect threw a short completion to WR Jason Mason. Though the team is being mum on details of the injury, the blow forced the Colorado native to leave the game, and Tulane head coach D. Geezy was captured grimacing by Fox Sports broadcast cameras as trainers reported the news to him.

"Obviously Bryce took a pretty good shot on the shoulder and he'll be evaluated in the next 24 hours or so to determine the severity. We'll know more hopefully soon and we'll have an update later in the week." said Geezy of Allen, who started the contest red hot, finishing 7 of 8 for 60 yards before exiting the game.

Prior to Allen's injury, the two teams traded blows early.

Boise St. opening drive went 13-plays and penetrated all the way to the Tulane 40-yard line. However, facing a 4th and 3, the Broncos decided to go for it and Wave S/CB Jonathan Smith broke up QB Joel Shaw's pass attempt to FB Isaac Harris in the flat, resulting in a turnover on downs while also serving as a preamble for a huge game by Smith.

The Broncos defense would return the favor following the turnover on downs however, as the Green Wave's ensuing 9-play drive, led by Allen, would result in a 4th and goal from the 1-yard line. After being stuffed outside the goal line on three consecutive run plays prior, Allen's fourth down pass attempt to Mason was broken up in the end zone by Broncos senior SS Tyrell Dawson, resulting in Allen's lone incompletion of the game and a turnover on downs with 2:20 to go in the first quarter.

It wasn't until the opening quarter's final minute that one of the two teams would finally put a dent into the scoreboard, and it came via another play by Smith.

In a complete reversal of last season's aforementioned early momentum boost provided by Gordon for the Broncos, Smith's 55-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the first quarter on Saturday broke a scoreless stalemate and gave the Green Wave a 7-0 advantage. The second big play of the night by Smith was one of many by he and the Tulane defense, playing under first year defensive coordinator Karl Dunbar while also needing to come through with a big game with their team down to its backup signal-caller.

Unlike last season when now-redshirt junior QB Obi Clemons (75 ovr) took over as the team's starter when Allen got injured during the Green Wave's mid-season 33-32 road win at Tennessee, the Wave this year turned to redshirt freshman QB Jimmy McBride (79 ovr) to relieve Allen. McBride, 5-11 203 pounds, is considered by many to be the heir apparent to Allen after this season, but he had an incredibly rough debut on Saturday, finishing just 3 of 10 for 17 yards along with 1 interception.

The lone highlight of the game for McBride came early in the third quarter when his perfectly-executed option pitch to true freshman RB Michael Brown Jr. resulted in a 71-yard touchdown that increased Tulane's lead to 17-3 just two plays into the third quarter. To go along with his first career touchdown, Brown Jr. finished the game with 92 total yards, including 3 receptions for 21 yards.

Freshman QB Jimmy McBride pitched the ball at the perfect moment which allowed RB Michael Brown Jr. to run for an untouched 71-yard that made the score 17-3 early in the third quarter.

After getting yet another turnover from its defense, this time via a fumble recovery by senior FS Brian Malone near midfield, the Tulane offense got another big play from its running game. This time, junior star RB Tony Tompkins took a handoff up the middle, spun past two would-be tacklers at the second level, ran through the arm tackle attempt of Broncos CB Brian Carter, then out-raced the rest of the defense before diving into the end zone for an emphatic 54-yard touchdown that blew the game wide open, making the score 24-3. Tompkins finished the night with 12 carries for 90 yards, and his long run all but put the game out of reach.

The Broncos would finally get into the end zone when QB Derrick Rivas, subbing in for a struggling Shaw, led a 10-play 53-yard drive which resulted in a 2-yard touchdown run by RB Chris Dorsey to make the score 24-10 with 2:15 to go. However Malone would recover the ensuing onsides kick attempt by the Broncos, and moments later, Wave sophomore PK Aaron Larson's 45-yard field goal made the score 27-10 with under two minutes remaining.

Tulane DB Jonathan Smith's big day concluded with this forced fumble with less than two minutes to go. His 19 tackles on Saturday were the most by a member of the Green Wave defense since former Wave FS Lee Palmer notched 23 tackles in the 2021 Sugar Bowl.
Boise would try to put together one last desperation drive, but on the very first play of their final possession, Smith stripped Broncos WR Josh Brooks of the football and Wave senior OLB Chuckie Coley recovered, turning the ball back over to the offense and officially putting the game away. Playing as the team's strong safety in its base 3-4 defense and as a sub-package slot cornerback, Smith was an absolute monster on Saturday, finishing the game with a career-high 19 tackles to go along with his early pick-six as well as a sack.

"This certainly wasn't always pretty, but we'll take wins any way we can get them," said Geezy, whose team finished just 2 of 10 on third downs while also only gaining 5 first downs in the contest compared to Boise St.'s 19.

"I thought we did an outstanding job of eliminating some of their best players from having an impact both offensively and defensively and guys like Jonathan really stepped up for us when we needed it most.

"Last year I called (former Broncos DE) Daniel Muhummad's 5-sack performance against us the most dominant game I have ever seen by a defender. Well, Jonathan may have very well changed that tonight."

Tulane (1-0) now awaits word on how long they will be without Allen. Geezy indicated after the game that should the senior miss time, McBride would start.

"I think the nerves got the best of Jimmy in this one," said Geezy.

"I don't want to make too many excuses, but this was his first game, it was opening weekend, on the road, on the blue turf, and against a great defense. If we have to roll with Jimmy for a bit, I have full confidence that with a good week of preparation and with the weapons at his disposal, this young man can get it done for us if we need him to."

The Green Wave will face #11 TCU (0-0) next week on the road. The Horned Frogs are 8-4 all-time versus the Green Wave, and the two schools have not met in football since 2004.

Notes: The Green Wave defense set out to put more pressure on opposing quarterbacks this season under Dunbar, and finished the game with four sacks (2 by sophomore DE T.J. Pearson) along with multiple hits and pressures, including one that directly resulted in a turnover. Freshman OLB Sean Williamson's hit on Shaw resulted in an interception by similarly-named junior MLB Sean Williams that led to a field goal that made the score 10-3 in the second quarter...Boise St. RB Ben Moore finished the game with 115 rushing yards on 20 carries, but was forced the exit the game late in the third quarter due to an elbow injury...Saturday's win marked only the third time ever under Geezy that Tulane won a game in which it passed for fewer than 100 yards. In fact the team's 77-yard performance on Saturday barely beat out the team's previous lowest passing total ever under Geezy, a 68-yard game which came in a 27-24 opening day win at Army back in 2011, Geezy's second season with the Wave and also the debut game of former Wave quarterback and now-offensive coordinator Curtis Byrd's playing career in New Orleans.

Tulane sophomore DE T.J. Pearson flexes after one of his two sacks on the night. The former blue chip prospect is hoping to improve on his team-leading sack total of 6 last season.

A sellout crowd watches the pregame festivities on the "Smurf Turf" of Albertson's Stadium.

Boise St. sophomore WR Michael Meyers and the rest of his teammates wait to run onto the field on opening night.

Tulane defensive back Jonathan Smith picked off this pass attempt to WR Jonathan Ginn and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown that gave the Green Wave a 7-0 first quarter lead.

Broncos RB Ben Moore had a strong performance, running the ball 20 times for 115 yards before leaving the game in the second half due to an elbow injury.

WR Michael Meyers' dropped touchdown on a third down play just before halftime resulted in the Broncos having to settle for a field goal.

RB Tony Tompkins finished the game with a team-high 90 rushing yards which includes this 54-yard diving touchdown that made the score 24-3 early in the third quarter and took the wind out of the Broncos' sails.

Green Wave CB Tyler Harrison played a role in holding much-hyped Boise St. freshman WR Willie Irvin without a catch, swatting away this fourth quarter pass attempt.

Jonathan Smith finished the game with 19 tackles, 3 tackles for losses, a sack, a forced fumble, and an interception returned for a touchdown, earning him Player of the Game honors.

Boise St. fans hit the exits early after seeing their team go down 27-10 with less than two minutes remaining.

19 tackles?! By the DB? Usually that would be worrisome but you handled the Broncos with ease. I don't think I've ever seen so many tackles in one game before. Impressive W to open the year and revenge last season. Sucks about Allen though...that's a tough loss if serious enough. Hopefully good news out of the trainers in a few days but if not then hopefully McBride can sack up and lead the squad.

I've been considering incorporating players from some of the more popular dynasties into the draft classes for my Rams franchise (some of my UTSA guys are already there). Would you be OK with my using some of your Tulane guys?

Hate to see Allen go down like that but what a performance by the hybrid CB/S Jonathan Smith! Must be that new defensive coordinator working wonders already!

Sad to see Allen struggle to stay healthy, but those are the struggles of contact sports. Good to see the defense open the season on a strong note, from the stats it looks like they forced Boise State to have to go to the underneath options in the passing game. They did do a number of the front seven in the running game though - if Tulane's going to only put up 250 yards of offense the defense is going to be on the field a lot longer than they were in this one.

Just caught up today. What a great victory to start off the season with the caveat being Allen being injured once again. This time around the offense is still a scary one without him.

Defense did extremely well given the circumstances, holding a ranked Boise squad to only 10 points. Sure, you gave up nearly 200 yards rushing but your guys stepped it up.

(Had to comment on the little Kay Adams snippet: she's the reason I watch Good Morning Football aside from my boy Nate Burleson defending my Lions)

                              Good luck against TCU!
