Nope, I did not schedule these on my own. Apparently the LSU-Tulane game is the place to be in Louisiana on a fall Saturday night in 2024.

Could you imagine just how insane our state would be if Tulane was indeed a good team in the SEC in today's college football world like they were back in the day? Wow...everybody and their mama would want to be at that game!

Game 4, Year 15 (2024 season): #9 Tulane Green Wave at LSU Tigers

RIVALRY GAME: THE BATTLE FOR THE RAG

      #9 49 -- 4-0 (1-0)
      NA 21 -- 2-1 (0-1)

Tulane star DB Jonathan Smith has some fun with the cameraman after taking his first ever career attempt at a punt return 63 yards for a touchdown that made the score 21-7 in the first quarter. | Not to be out-done, RB Tony Tompkins also made his mark on special teams, blazing past Tigers defenders for a 92-yard kickoff return touchdown that made the score 35-14 and blew the game wide open in the second quarter.

#9 Tulane continues to click on all cylinders, smashing rival LSU 49-21 in rainy Baton Rouge | Special teams delivers as both DB Smith and RB Tompkins score return touchdowns to help pace Green Wave to its 8th straight win over their in-state rivals | Despite turnovers, QB McBride has strong day, throwing for 303 yards and 4 touchdowns | Road date at Vanderbilt up next for red-hot Tulane

Baton Rouge, LA -- A little over the decade ago, behind the play of former Green Wave stars like QB Curtis Byrd, RB Orleans Darkwa, and LB Mark Richards, then-heavy underdog Tulane played LSU at Baton Rouge and defeated the Tigers 38-21 in a game played in rain-soaked conditions. It was their first win over LSU since 1982, and it served as an omen of what was to come of the series. Fast forward 11 years, and the Green Wave continued to show that they're the new bully in this rivalry series suddenly flipped upside down, as the Wave flexed their muscle and came away with a convincing 49-21 victory in another torrential downpour at Tiger Stadium. Two special teams touchdowns along with big days from QB Jimmy McBride and WR Jason Mason helped guide Tulane to its 8th straight win over their in-state bretheren, as they continued to show the state and the nation that they are the top football team in Louisiana.

Emerging Heisman candidate Jonathan Smith took his first career attempt at a punt return to the house from 63 yards away, and seemingly took all the wind out of LSU's sails early.

After LSU held Tulane to a quick three-and-out on the game's opening possession, the Tigers took an early 7-0 lead when redshirt senior WR Trevor Daugherty took a handoff on an end-around and broke two tackles on the way to a 63-yard touchdown that gave his team an early 7-0 lead. And that was about all she wrote as far as LSU momentum.

Tulane would quickly respond with a 6-play touchdown drive of its own, culminated by a 1-yard touchdown run by freshman FB J.J. Williams to tie the game up at 7-7.

On LSU's first offensive play following Williams' first career rushing touchdown, disaster struck for the home team. Green Wave junior MLB Sean Williams' big hit on Tigers RB Eric Robinson caused the ball to pop loose and MLB Mario Young pounced on it, setting the Wave up with possession at the Tigers' 29-yard line. One play later, McBride found freshman WR Adam Lawson wide open for a 29-yard touchdown that gave their team a 14-7 lead. The touchdown was the 6-6 190 pound former 4-star recruit from Breaux Bridge's first as a member of the Green Wave.

After holding LSU to a quick three and out, the Wave got another momentum boost from its special teams. Junior star DB Jonathan Smith, inserted into the lineup as the team's punt returner for the first time in his career, dazzled in his debut. Showing off amazing vision and speed, Smith took the punt back 63 yards for a touchdown that made the score 21-7 and continued to make his mark as a legit Heisman contender.

LSU (2-1) would go on to lose starting QB John Blount to a knee injury after he was sacked by DE T.J. Pearson on the final play of the first quarter, but it ultimately would not matter, as the Green Wave scoring onslaught never let up.

McBride's 71-yard touchdown to Mason made the score 28-7 before Robinson would quickly answer back with a 69-yard touchdown run off his own that cut the Tigers' deficit to 28-14. Robinson finished the contest with a game-high 142 yards on 17 carries, but any hopes of a comeback were quickly dashed.

Junior RB Tony Tompkins, who came into the game with 5 career kickoff return touchdowns and won last year's "Return Man of the Year" award, showed why he is considered by many to be the most dangerous return man in the nation. The Tigers' coverage unit was no match for Tompkins reported sub-4.3 speed, as he blazed past everyone in his path for a 92-yard touchdown that blew the game open once again, making the score 35-14.

"We couldn't get Tony rolling on offense today, but he still found a way to make his mark today," said Byrd, now the Green Wave's offensive coordinator.

The Tigers were able to pull to within two touchdowns when backup QB Lance Craft found TE TE Josh Edwards for a 1-yard score that cut their team's deficit to 35-21, but that would be the last time they dent the scoreboard.

WR Jason Mason was fed quite well Saturday night, grabbing 6 receptions for 169 yards and 2 touchdowns.
After a scoreless third quarter, McBride's 8-yard touchdown pass to TE Ronnie Parsons concluded a 14-play 86-yard drive that lasted 4:43 and made the score 42-21 with 8:56 remaining.

Then later, McBride's second touchdown hookup of the day with Mason, this one coming on a wide receiver screen, made the score 49-21 and essentially put the game away with 5:49 remaining. Mason, who last week was the subject of controversy after he tweeted frustrations about his role in the team's offense, had one of the best games of his career, as the former blue chip prospect ended the game with 6 receptions for 165 yards and 2 touchdowns.

McBride finished the game 16 of 27 for 303 yards with 4 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.

"This was an outstanding win, but we still have a lot to clean up. We're still giving up too many explosive plays defensively, particularly in the run game, and on offense, our turnover rate is still concerning." said Tulane head coach D. Geezy.

"All that said, our pass protection tonight was outstanding and enough can't be said about the way Tony, Jonathan, and our return units looked today. We have things to clean up, but you can't help but be excited that despite our sins, we are still putting up a lot of points. We have a chance to be a very good team if we can fix our mistakes and continue to score the way we have these past two games. This is a special team in the making before our very eyes, and now we just need to fortify a few trouble areas if we want to take that next step."

Tulane (4-0) will travel to Nashville to face Vanderbilt (2-2) next week week. The Green Wave blew away the Commodores 42-17 last season at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Notes: Tulane's 49 points scored Saturday night were their most ever versus arch-rival LSU, besting their 48 point effort in a 48-7 win in 1981 at the Superdome...Tompkins left the game on two separate occasions, as he suffered both a sprained elbow in the second quarter as well as a thigh contusion in the third quarter. Geezy indicated after the game that neither injury is considered serious, however his workload next week will likely be "monitored"...LSU's offense was only able to muster 1 third down conversion on Saturday, which came in the fourth quarter on an 11-yard pass from Craft to WR Dustin Cameron with five minutes remaining.

Tulane senior RG Jay Bonner and true freshman RB Michael Brown Jr. celebrate as the final seconds tick off the clock at rainy Tiger Stadium.

LSU Mascot "Mike the Tiger" leads LSU onto the field during the wet pregame festivities.

True freshman WR Adam Lawson found himself wide open on a post route and hauled in his first career receiving touchdown, giving Tulane a 14-7 lead in the first quarter.

LSU RB Eric Robinson did a lot of damage on the ground, finishing with 142 rushing yards on 17 carries, including this 69-yard second quarter touchdown that cut the Tigers' deficit to 28-14.

Redshirt freshman QB Jimmy McBride continued to show that he is more than capable of leading the Green Wave, finishing the night with 303 passing yards and 4 touchdowns in his first ever SEC road start.

Seen flexing here after a big tackle for a loss, Tigers redshirt junior MLB Nathan Smith was a one man wrecking crew, and ended the day with 10 total tackles along with an interception.

Despite this 20-yard second half reception, RB Tony Tompkins had a somewhat quiet night offensively, as he was in and out of the lineup due to reported elbow and quad injuries sustained during the contest.

After nearly taking a second punt return to the house but getting tripped up by a shoelace tackle, DB Jonathan Smith grinds his teeth in frustration following a 25-yard punt return early in the second half.

Green Wave sophomore DE T.J. Pearson continued to thrive in first year defensive coordinator Karl Dunbar's system, accounting for 2 sacks on the night, giving him 4 sacks on the year.

Senior WR Jason Mason hauled in this pass and weaved his way through traffic, taking the perfectly-executed receiver screen 41 yards for a touchdown that made the score 49-21 in the fourth quarter and put the game away.

CB Ryan White leaves the playing field in anguish as he is yet another LSU player that will graduate having never defeated the Tigers' top rival.

Big win over the in-state little brother! Your return game looks like it's great hands with Smith and Thompson. Great to see J-Ma$e show up after mouthing off on Twitter last week. About damn time!

Charles Wood.. I mean Jonathan Smith continues to go off. Sensational year he's having.

Really nice to see the team rolling like they have been.. Tulane back into Natty contention has been long overdue after the last couple seasons.

Liking the addition of the pictures in the Around the NCAA posts as well.. looking quite sharp.

Thanks Rizzo...I should have made note of this in my game report, but that was the first time I have ever returned both a kick and punt for a touchdown in the same game. It took me literally 13 seasons to finally return a punt for a touchdown, and now it seems like we're getting 1 or 2 every year. I have a feeling Smith isn't done in that department just yet.

I had to show by boy J-Ma$e some love in this one. He had a nice matchup versus their #2 CB Tony Christian (77 ovr, 82 spd), and sometimes it gets overlooked that he is a 92 overall WR that would be most teams' top guy.

LOL...Yeah, they're just plowing through their schedule. Their team really is just on a completely different level. It also doesn't help that Washington St. has sunken to being a lowly D- rated team.

If we are fortunate enough to make it to the title game this season, my money would be on USC being the opponent. Looking back at the past three seasons, they really should have been in the national title game in each of those years, but only managed to get 1. They're the team to beat in this dynasty right now.

Thanks brother...Smith really made a statement when he took that punt return back for a TD; that guy is just absolutely in the zone right now. If he keeps this up, he certainly has a great opportunity to put his name alongside Woodson's on the Heisman list.

Our national title drought has gone on way longer than I ever expected. We are now 6 years removed from our last title. I have said this before, but this drought has really made those teams of mine from 2016 to 2018 feel more revered than ever. That run of two national titles in three years was special.

Appreciate the compliment on the pics. I've come to realize that it literally only adds 3 minutes to my process, and it is worth the extra step to help bring life to the rest of the happenings around the nation.

I know you can't add custom sounds for when specific players pick up first downs, so in my head each J-Ma$e first down is followed by some clip from Mase's "Feel So Good." That intro instrumental would be killer for some event in game.

Haha...I wish there were player specific sounds because that idea is genius.

I plan to change my song lineup every season just to keep things fresh and sort of give each season its own unique feel; you're right, the start of that song is definitely football-event worthy. That would be awesome to hear before a big third down on D. I will add it to my list for 2025.

                    Great stuff my friend!

Game 5, Year 15 Preview (2024 season): #8 Tulane Green Wave at Vanderbilt Commodores

                      GAME 5 PREVIEW

Latest Line (courtesy Bovada - Las Vegas):

                      ....................27 1/2....................

Then-sophomore RB Tony Tompkins dove into the end zone after returning this kickoff for a touchdown to open the second half; it was his second return touchdown of the game.

Last Meeting: Then-#13 Tulane had no problems at all disposing of over-matched Vanderbilt, defeating the Commodores 42-17 last season at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Then-junior QB Bryce Allen threw for 351 yards and 4 touchdowns, while then-sophomore RB Tony Tompkins contributed 302 all-purpose yards and 3 touchdowns, including 2 kickoff return touchdowns. The game was close at halftime (14-10, Tulane), but the Wave would go on to outscore Vandy 28-7 the rest of the way to improve to 3-2 on the season.

2019: On the game's final play, Tulane then-freshman CB Nate Hall intercepted Vandy QB Bernard Robinson and promptly lateraled the ball to then-sophomore SS Troy Cowan while being tackled. Cowan would catch the lateral and return it 27 yards for a touchdown as the clock expired, making the final score 62-26. The play gave Tulane 62 points, the most points scored ever by the Wave under head coach D. Geezy.

Last Meeting at Venue: Then-#1 ranked Tulane's backs were against the wall, up just 24-20 late in the third quarter versus heavy-underdog Vanderbilt. However the Green Wave would go on to outscore the Commodores 38-6 the rest of the way on their way to a 62-26 blowout victory at Nashville in 2019. Former Green Wave QB Preston Fields threw for 370 yards and 4 touchdown passes while redshirt senior RB B.J. Johnson accounted for 243 all-purpose yards during the big victory. Then-true freshman star WR Ryan Jean also torched the overwhelmed Vanderbilt secondary, hauling in 4 receptions for 196 yards and 2 touchdowns, as his team's 62-point scoring output that day was the most points scored ever by the Green Wave under head coach D. Geezy.

just got caught up on everything I missed from my typical january/february-july offseason disappearance. I only missed about half the last season, and the beginning of this one, so it's nice you don't move too fast! lol

Tough ending last year, great start so far this year. Although I can't say I'm particularly happy to see you beat Boise State, it's good for this dynasty! Keep this momentum going, never sleep on Vandy.

Welcome back to the board SilverBullet19. Your input here has certainly been missed. I definitely understand why one would lose interest once football season ends.

Last season was very rocky, mostly due to my starting QB and top WR being out for the second half of the year. Knock on wood, but this year is off to a great start and feels "different."

Vandy has given us some problems the last couple of times we played them. Sure, we ended up blowing them out both times, but they kept things close with us for 2 1/2 quarters and made us work. Hopefully we can breathe a little easier in this one, but I could see anything happening.

Thanks for the reply brother and again, welcome back!

Time to kick off this game!

Game 5, Year 15 (2024 season): #8 Tulane Green Wave at Vanderbilt Commodores

                            #8 35 -- 5-0 (2-0)
                            NA 10 -- 2-3 (0-3)

Tulane LB Chuckie Coley (#47) makes the safety signal and FS Brian Malone claps after sophomore DE T.J. Pearson (#44) took down Vandy QB Bobby Edmonds in the end zone to make the score 12-7 midway through the second quarter.

#8 Tulane needs total team effort in order to pull away from pesky Vanderbilt squad in second half for a 35-10 victory | Green Wave defense tallies 8 sacks, 2 safeties, and a fourth quarter pick-six in a game that was much closer than the final score indicates | Up just 12-10 at halftime, Wave outscores Commodores 23-0 the rest of the way | Team will host Auburn next week at Mercedes-Benz Superdome

Nashville, TN -- History often has a way of repeating itself. Each of the past two times Tulane and Vanderbilt have met, the Commodores gave the Green Wave all they could handle for almost three quarters before the Wave took control late. This year, it was more of the same, as 8th ranked Tulane eventually turned a 14-10 lead with just over two minutes to play in the third quarter into a 35-10 victory Saturday night over heavy-underdog Vanderbilt in Nashville. It was almost an exact replica of last season's game between the two teams, which saw a 14-10 third quarter Wave lead eventually turn into a 42-17 win at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Blue chip true freshman OLB Sean Williamson (#9) had his way with Vandy's offensive line all night long and took down QB Bobby Edmonds three times during the contest.

The story of this year's battle was the immense pressure the Green Wave defense was able to put on Vandy QB Bobby Edmonds, as they sacked the fifth year senior 8 times on the night, the most ever sacks generated by the Wave defense during head coach D. Geezy's 15- year tenure. The previous record was 7, first set in 2013 and matched on two more occasions in 2016 and 2017. True freshman OLB Sean Williamson, the nation's #2 overall available high school prospect last year, absolutely terrorized Commodores RT Joey Perkins and finished with 3 sacks on the night.

"I tried to tell ya'll we will be harrassing quarterbacks this season," said first year Tulane defensive coordinator Karl Dunbar, whose defensive unit's 24 sacks this year has already surpassed last season's total of 22 and is also well on pace to break the Geezy era record of 46 sacks, obtained during the 2020 season.

After falling behind 7-0 early following a 1-yard touchdown run by Vandy RB Nick Gorman, the Wave went on to outscore the Commodores 35-3 the rest of the way in almost a mirror-image of last year's aforementioned meeting between the two squads, when an early 65-yard touchdown run by Gorman gave his team a 7-0 first quarter lead in that contest before the Wave took control in the second half. The Green Wave also needed all four quarters in 2019 in order to turn a 24-20 third quarter lead into an eventual 62-26 victory in Nashville 5 seasons ago.

Following an unsuccessful 47-yard go-ahead field goal attempt by Vandy PK Gemara Shelton with 6:58 remaining in the third quarter, redshirt freshman SS Jo Jo Price's sack for a safety two possessions later was the Wave's second safety of the night and increased his team's lead to 14-10. Sophomore DE T.J. Pearson also had a sack for a safety in the second quarter.

QB Jimmy McBride's 14-yard touchdown pass to WR Brandon McIntyre with 2:03 remaining in the thrid quarter was his only touchdown pass of the night and put the Wave up 21-10. McBride finished the game with only 150 passing yards versus a surprisingly-game Vandy defense while McIntyre finished with 8 receptions for 53 yards.

The game was put away when Edmonds drove his team deep into Green Wave territory but saw his pass attempt to TE Willis Brown get picked off by FS Brian Malone and returned 77 yards for a touchdown that made the score 28-10 with 8:06 to go. Wave freshman FB J.J. Williams' provided the final cherry on top with a 38-yard touchdown run that made the score 35-10 with just over two minutes to go. Williams finished the night with a game-high and career-high 75 yards on just 4 carries.

Tulane (5-0) will host Auburn (2-2) next week at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Green Wave defeated the Tigers 48-16 last season at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Freshman FB J.J. Williams high-fives RT Matthew Cole following Williams' 38-yard touchdown run off of Cole's right edge that made the score 35-10 and essentially put the game away with 2:23 remaining.

Do-it-all defender Jonathan Smith's first quarter sack was the first of eight on the evening for Tulane's defense and set the tone for the rest of the night.

Freshman QB Jimmy McBride's 36-yard scramble for a first down was a career-long run and helped set up a 40-yard field goal early in the game.

Sophomore DE T.J. Pearson's team-leading 5th sack on the season resulted in a safety which made the score 12-7 in the second quarter.

WR Jason Mason, fresh off one of the best performances of his career, hauled in 4 receptions for 55 yards on the night.

Tulane WR Brandon McIntyre was a big part of the Green Wave's offensive game plan and finished with 8 receptions, including a third touchdown that made the score 21-10.

QB Jimmy McBride celebrates following his only touchdown pass on the night.

With Vandy driving down 21-10 early in the fourth quarter, FS Brian Malone's interception was returned for a 77-yard touchdown that resulted in a 14-point swing and increased his team's lead to 28-10 with 8:06 remaining.

True freshman FB J.J. Williams' career-long 38-yard touchdown run made the score 35-10 with under three minutes remaining and was the final nail in Vandy's coffin.
