Argh! Didn't get my analysis in before you kicked things off but good luck as always my friend! Don't get caught sleeping in this one. It is still Auburn at the end of the day!

Game 6, Year 15 (2024 season): Auburn Tigers at #8 Tulane Green Wave

        NR 47 -- 3-2 (1-2)
        #8 24 -- 5-1 (2-1)

Redshirt freshman QB Jimmy McBride displayed his frustration following one of his whopping 5 turnovers in Saturday night's upset loss.

Green Wave's SEC, national title hopes dealt a devastating blow as unranked Auburn takes #8 Tulane to the woodshed in 47-24 stunner at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome | Redshirt freshman QB McBride implodes, turning the ball over 5 times and dooming Green Wave to their first ever loss to the Tigers under Geezy | Wave has no answer to Auburn's spread option rushing attack as RB Chase burns defense for 247 yards and 4 touchdowns | Perhaps caught peeking ahead, team now limps into its bye week with crucial matchup versus defending national champion Florida on the horizon

New Orleans, LA -- Going into this season, head coach D. Geezy's Green Wave had compiled a perfect 40-0 record in SEC games played at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome since the school's return to the conference in 2014, including a 10-0 overall record versus Auburn. That all changed Saturday night, as the upset-minded Tigers established early momentum and amassed a 34-point lead before going on to shock the home-standing Wave in a 47-24 blowout that was by far the biggest upset in the nation so far in 2024. The Auburn defense forced 6 turnovers, including a pivotal one early in the contest, and RB Corey Chase played the game of his life, as the Tigers finally got the monkey off their backs, being the only SEC West school to not have defeated Tulane over the past decade.

With Tulane set to go in for an early score, Auburn DE Jason Crawford stepped in front of RB Michael Brown Jr. to snag an interception that was returned for a 96-yard touchdown that completely changed the complexion of the game early and the Green Wave never recovered.

The game seemed to be under control for the Wave early in the second quarter. With the score tied at 3-3, redshirt freshman QB Jimmy McBride drove his team deep into Auburn territory, all the way down to the Tigers' 3-yard line with a chance to take the lead. However, McBride's short pass attempt to RB Michael Brown Jr. was read perfectly by Auburn senior DE Jason Crawford and got picked off and returned 96 yards for a touchdown that gave the Tigers a 10-3 lead.

On literally the very next offensive play from scrimmage, McBride threw yet another interception, this one to CB Greg Arnold, setting up the Tigers deep in Wave territory. And just one play after that, Chase's 20-yard touchdown run with 5:59 remaining made the score 17-3. Chase was not done.

Late in the second quarter, the senior running back's 10-yard touchdown scamper increased his team's lead to 24-3 with 1:38 remaining in the half, then his 65-yard run early in the third quarter made the score 31-3 less than two minutes into the third quarter, and the route was on.

"Our run fits were poor all night and we just couldn't figure out how to get stops," said Green Wave defensive coordinator Karl Dunbar, who appeared to catch the wrath of Geezy as the two men were caught on camera in a shouting match on the sideline in the third quarter.

"Their running game, the offensive line and backs, just were far superior today and we just played piss poor defense."

Being forced to play one-dimensional football most of the game due to the lopsided score, Tulane's offense just could not get going on this night, struggling to move the football and also struggling to hold onto the football. McBride, playing in place of injured starting QB Bryce Allen since week 1, had by far his worst outing of his career, finishing the night with just 157 passing yards to go along with 4 interceptions and a lost fumble. He would get replaced by redshirt junior QB Obi Clemons in the fourth quarter.

Clemons, who started six games for the Wave last season when Allen was injured before being surpassed on the depth chart by McBride this past off-season, had a fine performance even though it was too little too late. The Sulphur, Louisiana native led three successive touchdown drives upon his insertion into the lineup to pull the Wave to within a 37-24 deficit with 2:41 to go. Clemons finished the game with 167 passing yards and 3 touchdowns along with 88 rushing yards in just one quarter of action and gave his team a brief belief that they could pull off a miracle comeback.

Tigers RB Corey Chase ran through the Wave defense all night long, finishing with a career-high 247 yards and 4 touchdowns as Tulane just could not figure out how to stop Auburn's spread no-huddle rushing attack.
That belief was short-lived however, as Chase's 87-yard touchdown run with 2:25 to go made the score 44-24 and virtually put the game away. Frequently used on shotgun handoffs and zone-read option plays, Chase had a career-night, rushing 21 times for 247 yards and 4 touchdowns, and left Tulane players, coaches, and fans stunned.

"We heard all week how we had no chance of winning this game and had no chance whatsoever of ever coming into this building and winning," said Chase.

"We used that to fuel us all week long and we got sick and tired of hearing about Tulane's 10-0 record against us."

Following their off week, Tulane will host defending national champion and #3 ranked Florida at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The last time the two teams met, the Green Wave got blown away by the Gators 36-17 in last season's SEC Championship Game in Atlanta. The two-time defending SEC Champion Gators would later go on to defeat Michigan 20-16 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome weeks later to earn its first BCS title since 1997.

"Certainly after a game like tonight, you leave feeling like you got punched in the gut. This one is going to hurt for a while," said Geezy, who refused to elaborate on who his starting quarterback would be should Allen be unable to return in two weeks.

"We'll need to use this bye week to lick our wounds and get right again, because things don't get any easier from this point on.

"Unfortunately, we just got a harsh lesson that if you don't bring your 'A' game each and every week in this conference, you can get your butt beat. Hats off to Auburn but we just didn't look ready for this matchup, and that's all on me."

Auburn QB Antonio Nicholson and OL Jason Love celebrate during the game's closing seconds in what was a half-empty Mercedes-Benz Superdome most of the fourth quarter.

Auburn DE Jason Crawford's 96-yard pick-six gave his team a 10-3 lead and completely swung the momentum into the Tigers' favor.

QB Jimmy McBride turned the ball over 5 times Saturday night and was stripped of the football by Auburn freshman MLB Fred Palmer at the tail-end of this 20-yard scramble.

Tigers CB Todd Porter has had a rough season, constantly being picked on weekly by opposing #1 receivers, however he was solid on Saturday night and came away with this second quarter interception as well as a fumble recovery.

Tulane redshirt junior QB Obi Clemons replaced McBride in the fourth quarter and threw 3 touchdown passes while possibly re-earning the backup quarterback job moving forward.

QB Antonio Nicholson didn't have to do much Saturday night as he finished with only 149 passing yards, however his streak without an interception this season surprisingly remained intact.

Auburn DT Byron Garrett was a force up the middle for the Tigers and finished the night with 2 sacks.

The Green Wave defense had no answer for redshirt senior RB Corey Chase as he gashed them for 247 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns on the night. Here, he pounds his chest following his game-clinching 87-yard touchdown carry late in the game.

In a rare event, Green Wave fans hit the Mercedes-Benz Superdome exits early after Chase's final touchdown run made the score 44-24 and essentially ended all hopes of a miracle comeback.

Knowing his team's national title dreams are now in grave danger, Tulane senior WR Brandon McIntyre was the last man to leave the field following Saturday night's crushing defeat.

Yowch.. that hurts .. and in a lot more ways than one. Smith's Heisman hopes.. the Natty.. maybe the SEC too are now a lot less certain than they once were. Yikes. And it sucks to lose in a blowout like that too when you just get completely outplayed. Hopefully that bye can help get you guys regrouped.

Glad the Trojans won. The Monday morning quarterbacks will say it's Clemons's time.

I knew Auburn was better in reality than on paper. Best of luck against Florida.

Tough loss. QB controversy in New Orleans, now.

Alabama looks like they're on Florida's level from last year. Look at those points scored/allowed!

wow...tough to lose as it is but a blowout like that? That's a real gut punch. A rebound against the Gators can salvage a lot, but given last year's result, I won't hold my breath.

I disagree on a QB controversy though, everyone has off days. He's young, it will happen, but keep him confident by letting him retain that starting role. It'll show some faith, which can pay off down the road.

Haha...Yeah man, you laid it all out there. All of our hopes and dreams may have just been flushed down the toilet, just like that. I especially feel bad for my boy Jonathan Smith. I feel like we've let him down.

We pretty much have to run the table now in order to win the SEC - a loss against anyone pretty much ends our chances, because there is no way Bama drops two. I'm not even going to think about a national title game right now.

Yep, tough loss, but games like that every so often are ultimately what keeps us coming back. The 2016 and 2018 seasons are feeling more and more special as the years of this dynasty go on.

USC is just a machine in this game. I'd say they're the odds-on favorite to win it all right now, hence the #1 ranking.

Yes, this stretch suddenly looks absolutely brutal. What was once a part of our schedule where I thought we'd prove to the world that Tulane is back, it is now looking like a death trap for our conference and national title dreams.

At the end of the day, you can't turn the ball over 6 times and expect to win against ANYBODY.

I'm honestly undecided about what we'll do at QB. Clemons did look good, I ain't gonna lie. He provided a spark for us, albeit against soft coverage.

You absolutely nailed it with your pregame analysis. I really don't think I took them as seriously as I should have, and I paid dearly for it.

To answer your question, Mississippi St. is who we replaced. This version of the game actually required a conference invite in order to change conferences, and we got one back at the end of the 2013 season:http://www.operationsports.com/forum...&postcount=243

Yes, Alabama to me is on a collision course to face USC in the title game (unless of course we do something about that).

I'm hoping this QB controversy drama gets nipped by a return of Bryce Allen next week. I'm anxious to sim past the bye and see what his status becomes.

At this point, I am just going to focus on one game at a time and enjoy the season. In a way, the pressure is off of us to stay perfect and hopefully we play better as a result. We won our first national title with a one-loss record, so all hope is not lost.

You raise some great points about the upcoming decision I may have to make at QB should Allen not heal enough during the bye week. There are pros and cons to both. I literally, at this moment, have no idea what I am going to do, but man, you've made a great argument.

                        Thanks fellas!

I used to redshirt even my juco recruits until I realized that wasn't there purpose. I suppose there's no law against it, but it isn't entirely practical, unless they're just not like to contribute..

That was when I had USC dynasties and recruiting was like shooting fish in a barrel.

I redshirt them sometimes, depending on the situation. It actually does happen in real life from time to time.

A lot of junior college players are developmental-types in real life, and sometimes they take the year to redshirt and further hone their skills while they still hold on to their ultimate dream - playing in the NFL.

Yeah I am pretty pumped about the addition. There is decent chance of Tony Tompkins bolting after this season, so it is good to get this insurance policy just in case. The Brown cousins will compliment each other very well down the road, with Michael Jr. being the third down/pass receiver type and Anthony being more of the lead-horse type.

After a brief talent drought in the state early on in this dynasty, Louisiana is getting back to pushing out top tier talent. Now we just need to figure out how to stop LSU from snatching up our top targets.
