Not a great win against Kentucky. One of those games that feels way closer than it actually is or should be. Still, win and survive. Tony going down is a loss, though, especially with Bama next. They have given up 44 points in 8 games! 5.5 per game. That's insane.

IRL, you have to go back to Bama's 2011 team that gave up 8.2 to find a team below 10 points allowed per game.

That's how I felt with my win over Iowa State. It was a win, but so ugly it felt like a loss. Tough break on the injury too.

This team needs to step up and start playing more consistent football!

Thanks Iron Dragon. Great to see you back in action around here.

Pierce, for whatever reason, despite his 81 ovr rating, has struggled mightily during his time here (maybe it's his 39 ELU rating?). He has only averaged 3.0 yards per carry prior to torching the weak Kentucky defense, so I'd like to see him getting it done against a better defense before considering him the solution. He'll certainly get the opportunity to though.

I've been trying something similar with trying to raise up programs in my 07 Clemson dynasty by changing offensive and defensive systems to match personnel. FSU is 8-2 as we fly to Tallahassee to play them and South Carolina has two wins after going 0-24 the last two years, but I haven't figured out how to engineer a winning season at LSU from afar.

Anyway, I can't wait to see what happens. Hope you hang on for the upset.
Yeah I can't lie either...this matchup looks very difficult on paper, especially with Tompkins now out. We're going to have to play a near flawless game to come away with a win in Tuscaloosa.

This one is huge. A win for Alabama essentially clinches the SEC West for them, and would mean a third straight year without an SEC title for the Green Wave. This is as "must win" as "must win" gets, especially for Coach Geezy, whose seat may be starting to get a little warm.

I feel the same way. Hopefully the close finish versus Kentucky was merely a product of the wind being taken out of our sails with Tony going down.

Yeah Bama has not played against the best schedule, but the most points they have given up in a game so far this season is 10 on three separate occassions. Every other game has been either 7 points allowed, or a shutout. In fact, their defense has not given up a single point in its last three games.

Their defense, especially in the secondary, is absolutely incredible on paper, as you'll see in a few days when I post the preview. Their entire starting defensive backfield would probably go in the top 10 of the NFL draft as well as a couple of their front-7 players.

You said it...we have had a good year overall, but games like this one really leave a sour taste in your mouth. We just haven't been the same team ever since the Vandy game it feels like.

Junior RB Tony Tompkins has been wearing a protective sleeve on his oft-injured shoulder as a result of reoccurring injuries.

Tulane | Tompkins to miss "at least" remainder of regular season
          Mon, 21 Oct 2024 07:14:12 -0700

report courtesy Erin Andrews, FOX Sports

Erin Andrews of Fox Sports reports that Tulane junior RB Tony Tompkins (80 ovr, 97 spd) sustained a Grade 3 separated shoulder in the team's 34-15 win on Saturday versus Kentucky, and is expected to miss the remainder of the Green Wave's regular season, and possibly even the postseason. Tompkins, who has had problems with his right shoulder throughout his time in New Orleans and wears a protective sleeve for added protection, is facing a recovery period of approximately two months according to Andrews' source.

"Tony has had problems with the shoulder since his freshman season in New Orleans, and has had to exit several games with the injury during his career, but it finally gave way," said the source, who Andrews conspicuously did not name.

"We will move forward with sort of a 'running back by committee' approach the rest of the way. But there's no doubt that this is a crushing blow for us to lose such a playmaker at a crucial time."

Tompkins, a former 4-star recruit out of Florida, was having a career year before the injury, rushing for a team-high 810 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns while boasting an incredible 8.5 yards per carry average. Last year's "Return Man of the Year" award recipient also has 6 kick return touchdowns in his career, including 1 this season.

One thing I am curious about is the low overall ratings of your running backs. What's that about? Did he just have a low potential rating coming in?

Talk about limping into the Alabama match up. That was about as ugly of a win as it could be. Losing Tompkins really puts a damper on the season. I would expect that Brown Jr.'s role will increase substantially as Coach Geezy looks for that much needed playmaker. While I think Pierce can be a solid 1-2 down back I just don't see him with a lot of big play potential.

It really sucks to see Tompkins go down just as his season was starting to come into form. His time into Tulane is turning into a "what could have been" moment I feel like.

Can't wait to see the Alabama preview. Oh Deuce...how we miss you even more given the current state of the backfield. Good luck my friend!

It will be interesting to see if Tompkins comes back for his senior season, or simply does what my star did and says "not worth it."

His speed is so valuable, its rare to come across a guy that quick, especially at RB.

We can thank one Mr. Deuce Monroe for this.

He was the stud back of our recruiting class back in 2022 and is currently an 88 overall, however he sold us out and transferred to Alabama after his freshman season.

If he doesn't leave us, and that nice 88 overall junior is sitting at the top of the depth chart, all of a sudden our backs don't look so average on paper.

Tony Tompkins was a part of that same recruiting class, but he was just a 70 overall 4-star where as Deuce was an 80 overall 4-star in year 1.

No doubt, this is a huge blow and really changes the way we can approach games. I was really planning to run Tony a lot versus Bama, likely 25+ carries, but we will now have to revamp our game plan, anticipating a less effective running game.

Michael Brown Jr.'s role, as far as the running game, likely won't change a ton. We may give him an extra 3-4 carries maybe, but his increase in touches will likely come from more screens and dumpoffs. I know this probably doesn't matter on the video game, but to keep things realistic, I don't want to overuse by 6-0 168-pound running back as a heavy volume ball carrier; I mean he is pretty much DeSean Jackson's size. Pierce and the FB J.J. Williams will be the guys that pick up the slack in the running game. It'll really be a committee approach from here on out, with whoever has the hot hand getting more carries week to week.

I hope Tony can salvage a strong senior season next year, but you're right; his time with us has been a mild disappointment. That said, not every player's story has a happy ending, so I am enjoying that part of it from a story-teller's perspective. But his story may not be over yet.

Yeah I never even considered that possibility. I hope he stays, because he will be a very important part of an offense set to lose a ton of talent after this season.

I'd really like to see him have a signature, 1400+ yard season next year. I thought this was going to be that year, but obviously things have changed.

If he comes back, he will pretty much be the focal point of the offense as we will likely be run heavy.

Thanks for checking in my friends!

Senior QB Bryce Allen convinced head coach D. Geezy to let him come back ahead of schedule.

                      report courtesy Dianna Russini, ESPN

In a somewhat surprising development, Dianna Russini of ESPN reports that Tulane junior QB Bryce Allen (94 ovr) will make today's trip to Tuscaloosa and will start Saturday night's game versus #4 ranked Alabama. Previously thought to still be at least a week from returning, the decision to start Allen was made late Thursday night, per Russini's report. Allen, a senior, has not played since week 1 of the season after suffering a mild labrum tear in his throwing shoulder for the second time in the past 10 months during the team's 27-10 opening week win at Boise St.

"We met in my office - Bryce, myself, our team doctor, his independent doctor, and his parents, - literally for about 3 hours going over everything: the pros and cons of him returning, the chances of the injury reoccurring, pain threshold, game strategy based on his limitations, etc." said Tulane head coach D. Geezy via text message to Russini.

"In the end, it was determined that at this stage of his recovery, it is more so a pain-tolerance thing, and Bryce personally is really pushing to get back onto the field, so we will give him the opportunity."

According to Russini, Allen will wear a protective brace on his shoulder that extends all the way down past his elbow, to help restrict bending and over-extension of the labrum area. He has practiced with the contraption for the past two weeks, and is now eager to re-join his teammates on the field.

"My team needs me right now, and I just wasn't going to take 'no' for an answer," said Allen.

"I'm a team captain in his senior year and this is the biggest game of our year. I can handle the pain, and, especially after the way our last trip to Tuscaloosa went, I just want to get out there and help my team win this one. I'm tired of standing on the sideline."

Redshirt sophomore RB Deuce Monroe, now sporting a #2 jersey with Alabama, has been the same jack-of-all trades weapon he was with Tulane during his first season on the field with the Crimson Tide.

Alabama | Monroe eager to face his old squad
                      Fri, 25 Oct 2024 06:17:12 -0700

                      report courtesy Samantha Ponder, ESPN

Samantha Ponder of ESPN reports that former Tulane and current Alabama star RB Deuce Monroe (88 ovr) is anxious to play versus his former team in the two teams' huge SEC matchup on Saturday night. Monroe, who spent his true freshman season with the Green Wave, transferred to Alabama following his rookie season, despite having a strong 1,310-yard 9-touchdown performance that year. Not happy with his overall usage and also described as "homesick" by some Tulane officials, the Alabama native made the switch to the Crimson Tide.

Playing as Alabama's #2 running back behind senior Heisman trophy candidate Cameron Miller (95 ovr), the 5-8 177 pound Monroe has already rushed for 551 yards and 9 touchdowns, exceeding his rushing total of 364 yards and 3 touchdowns in 2022 with the Green Wave. Monroe also plays as the Crimson Tide's #4 wide receiver, and has 20 receptions for 228 yards and a touchdown while adding 797 combined kick and punt return yards.

"They've said a lot about me over the past year about me leaving, some of it true, some if it not true, but I heard it all, and needless to say I've been looking forward to this one for a long time now," said the redshirt sophomore Monroe.

"I read Coach D. Geezy's comments about me last week after their game against Kentucky and I didn't really appreciate that either. It is what it is; like he said, may the best team win.....and we will."

Monroe was a member of the Green Wave's 2022 recruiting class, coming in as a 4-star player out of Boaz, Alabama. Playing as the versatile backup behind former Wave RB Buck Johnson III, Monroe was an all-purpose phenom and, as a true freshman, recorded the first punt return touchdown by the Green Wave during Geezy's tenure in New Orleans during a 24-17 week 2 win over Virginia Tech that season.

The two teams have a history of players swapping sides in their Tidal Wave Party rivalry. Most recently, former standout DB Garrett Shuler transferred from Alabama to Tulane in 2020. Also, in 2015, the Green Wave acquired former star RB Brett Curtis and CB Ethan Cantrelle from the Crimson Tide, two players that were instrumental in the Wave's BCS titles runs from 2016-2018.

Monroe's full interview with Ponder is set to air Saturday morning on ESPN College GameDay, live from Tuscaloosa.

Allie LaForce of CBS and the sideline reporter for this weekend's contest between #11 Tulane and #4 Alabama reports that Green Wave first year defensive coordinator Karl Dunbar is looking forward to the challenge of facing his old team. Dunbar coached the Alabama defensive line for 8 seasons under head coach Nick Saban, and hopes his insight can help his new team on both sides of the ball.

"I know how Nick game-plans, I know their personnel very well on both sides of the ball, so I would hope that gives me and our team an advantage this weekend," said Dunbar in the feature story set to air during CBS' pregame show Saturday evening before the game.

"It's going to feel a little weird walking into that building as a visitor; I know all to well that things can get a little hostile for away teams, but I am looking forward to the challenge."

QB Obi Clemons stepped up when his team needed it the most. After a playaction fake to RB Tim Powers, his 72-yard touchdown completion to WR Jason Mason provided the game-winning points for Tulane, who is now one win away from an SEC West division title.

Last Meeting: Last season, then-#10 ranked Tulane scored 17 unanswered points en route to knocking off then-#4 ranked Alabama 27-24 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. QB Obi Clemons, making his first career start, threw a 72-yard touchdown to WR Jason Mason in the fourth quarter to give the Wave its first and only lead of the contest. Mason finished the night with 8 receptions for 165 yards and the Green Wave also got a huge performance from former RB Tim Powers, who finished with 152 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns to help improve his team's record to 7-2.

2022: Tulane CB Tyler Harrison mistimed his jump as QB Jimmy Sutton's pass landed in the hands of freshman WR Adam Bell who took it the distance from 80 yards out for what would end up being the game-winning points with 2:51 remaining.

Last Meeting at Venue: Two seasons ago, then-#1 ranked Tulane marched into Tuscaloosa to face #9 Alabama riding a 7-game winning streak over their SEC West Division rivals along with an undefeated 8-0 record on the year. That all came to a screeching halt that night, as the Crimson Tide made big plays late to come away with a 42-31 victory which eventually led to the Tide winning the SEC West Division for the first time since 2014. After Tulane grabbed a late lead via former Wave FB Eric Harrell's 1-yard touchdown run with 3:26 remaining, Alabama re-claimed the lead via an 80-yard touchdown pass from QB Jimmy Sutton to WR Adam Bell that made the score 35-31. On Tulane's ensuing possession, Alabama DB/LB Derek Rutledge's interception with just over two minutes remaining led to a game-clinching touchdown pass by Sutton with 1:48 remaining, putting the game out of reach at 42-31.

                        Head Coach D. Geezy's Take

Tulane head coach D. Geezy addressed the media Thursday afternoon after practice.

There's not a whole lot to say about this matchup. We all know what's at stake here. We win, we control our own destiny with winning this conference. We lose, Alabama essentially clinches the division, and Tulane doesn't win the SEC for a third straight year.

I feel like I say this every year, but this Crimson Tide team is the most talented team we'll face this season, and speaking candidly, have my vote for #1 right now. They're great on both sides of the ball and really do everything extremely well, as evidenced by the score results all season. They haven't scored less than 40 in a game or allowed more than 10 in a game, and that's absolutely incredible.

They have a defensive backfield that has given us a lot of problems these past few years, and the last projection I saw had all four of their starting DBs going in the top 15 picks of next year's draft. FS Derek Rutledge (95 ovr), CB Quinton Bentley (92 ovr), and CB Lewis Jones (92 ovr) are three players in particular that I deem as special, and all three are guys that got away from us during recruiting a few years back. Those three guys will all be starring on Sundays, and have hurt us in the past, and we will have to be careful about challenging them and throwing their way.

Their offense all flows through the great running of Cam Miller (95 ovr), who has given us some problems these past couple of years, and also that Deuce Monroe guy (88 ovr), who I am sure will give his best effort this weekend, for obvious reasons. The quarterback and their top wide receiver aren't too shabby either.

We will have our hands full, but I think if we come out and play good, sound football, much better than last week, then I truly believe we can come out of there with a win.

Oh my God. I know Alabama only played one "tough" team based on record but good Lord. Averaging 52 points a game and only allowing just over 50 yards rushing a contest? And their lineup is stacked! Man this is going to be a tough one, but it's exciting just to look at the preview. All of the luck in this one, Alabama looks poised to keep Tulane away from the SEC Title for another season.
