Last week's game was the first time in a long time anyone came that well prepared to play us. We've always struggled against pressure and we've always struggled against the option, and it showed. We might have won had Jordan not thrown five picks, but we still struggled in many other areas.

Your Hokies and Coach Lane Kiffin come to town after the bye with a much different offensive philosophy and many more talented defenders, so we'll see what happens then. Tech did manage to beat us last year and they are the most talented team we'll see all year, so we certainly are not trending in the right direction. Hopefully the bye can straighten things out a bit, fingers crossed in the meantime.

Thanks for checking in as always!

Re: We have a football team too... Guru's UConn Huskies (NCAA 14)

          Week 5 - Recruiting Update

Now that we are a few weeks into the season and on our first bye week, we'll take a look at how recruiting has gone for our Huskies. We do not have any commitments as of yet, but the good news is that players are on their way to UConn for visits, and hopefully our class will begin to take shape soon.

For now, here are some headlines to follow for the recruiting trail in 2022-23. Click here to review UConn's Week 1 Recruiting Board.

Top 100 DE prospect Hunt commits to Ohio State

One of UConn’s favorite prospects is already off the board. Defensive end Amari Hunt, a player UConn was heavily interested in, ended any speculation about where he’ll be playing ball early in the process. The Madeira, Ohio native announced his intent to sign and play for Ohio State and coach Urban Meyer next fall over pitches from Michigan State, Michigan and UConn. Ohio State is just 90 minutes up the road for the youngster. Hunt, graded at 80 overall, had the potential to start with UConn from day one, but ultimately home took greater priority.

Hunt was viewed as a technically advanced prospect (80 OVR, 87 PMV, 87 FMV, 84 BSH, 81 PUR, 80 PRC), but his athleticism more average, which could mean he is approaching his ceiling. Nevertheless, missing out on a day one starter might come back to haunt the Huskies later.

          Several Prospects Visiting Next Week

UConn has begun scheduling visits with their prospects, and seven are slated to come to Storrs/E. Hartford for next week’s ranked showdown against Virginia Tech, including some prospects at positions of need and a few toward the top of UConn’s board. I’ve taken the liberty of breaking these seven prospects down into groups of those near committing, those whom UConn has slight leads over, and those UConn is trailing.

Starting with two players who have UConn far and away at the top of the board, UConn welcomes Texan wideout John Pratt and Dunn, North Carolina linebacker Kerdarius Barber to the school this weekend. UConn has a 1,500+ point lead on both and, if the visits go well, both could commit this weekend. Both are prospects from popular recruiting spots in recent years - Pratt is being courted with assistance from quarterback Jordan Brown, a Beaumont native, and Barber by fellow linebacker Jevon Sapp, a Gastonia native. The extra support has certainly been helping, as evidenced by the sizeable leads in the races.

Barber, a three-star prospect rated at 70 overall, is a very good athlete, but needs some work technically. Barber would benefit from a redshirt year and should be able to contribute soon if he works hard. UConn’s rebuilding of depth at linebacker means he will be granted time to develop without being thrown into the fire. Barber would join a linebacking stable that includes other youngsters such as Avan Goulding, Marlon Bush, Marshawn Dortch and Vasean Gatewood.

Pratt is a high-profile wide receiving prospect who seems interested in playing with someone he knows (Jordan Brown) and playing in a high-flying offense with lots of passing opportunities. Pratt projects as a bit of a Chamarkelle Byrom type player with size (6’4), decent athleticism and okay hands. He would come into UConn at 78 overall and will ride the bench at first behind a deep group which projects everyone to return in 2023.

          Barber (70 OVR, 82 SPD, 75 STR, 87 ACC, 69 TAK, 77 HPW, 72 PUR, 73 PRC, 76 BSH, 78 PMV/FMV, 70 ZCV)

          Pratt (78 OVR, 89 SPD, 77 CTH, 78 SPC, 79 CIT, 84 RTE)

A few of the prospects visiting this weekend have UConn narrowly out front or beginning to pull away - a visit could help swing these races in our favor.

The first such prospect is defensive end Quayshaun Wise from St. Cloud, FL. With Hunt the top D-Line prospect on UConn’s board during the preseason, a player such as Wise becomes a bigger priority. The staff likes all of the prospects they have at that spot, Wise included. A projected 74 overall player, Wise is a solid athlete and a solid technical end. He may benefit from a redshirt year as well, but projects as a long-term, multi-year starter for UConn, especially as several of their recruits in recent years have not panned out as hoped.

Center Deontay Bumbury from Union, NJ is another such prospect. Bumbury is from the same hometown as Shav Wade and his brother, Tayvon, was a teammate of Shav's before playing college ball at Richmond as an offensive guard. Deontay is a bit undersized to play center at 6’1 and just 275 pounds. However, Bumbury is a solid fit for a balanced offense such as UConn’s. Depending on how his summer goes and who else commits at that position, Bumbury could compete for a starting job from day one, with three-year starter Lawron Leak graduating in the spring and only Travonte Glascock returning at center.

Jeremy Thompson is one of the other center prospects on the board. Continuing the recruiting pull in Big 12 country, the Oklahoman has UConn in front over BYU. Thompson is more nimble than Bumbury, but less developed. As with many other prospects from across the nation, the staff worries about Thompson possibly becoming homesick and losing patience if he can’t play immediately, something that has happened a handful of times in years past.

          Wise (74 OVR, 76 SPD, 85 ACC, 77 STR, 78 PMV, 73 FMV, 75 BSH, 77 TAK/HPW, 76 PRC)

          Bumbury (66 OVR, 52 SPD, 93 ACC, 72 STR, 76 PBK, 73 RBK, 69 IBK)

          Thompson (65 OVR, 69 SPD, 80 STR, 85 ACC, 71 PBK, 72 RBK, 68 IBK)

The last two prospects visiting have UConn hopeful that they can change deficits in the recruiting battles into leads by the end of the visit.

UConn has attacked the cornerback position heavily, and their trek into Big 12 country found LeShaun Shatner from Duncanville, TX. Shatner is only a 3-star prospect, and not a very good one at that. But he is depth, and UConn is in desperate need of cornerback help. Shatner is currently leaning toward staying home and attending Texas A&M and it does not seem Shatner is viewed as a priority prospect for the Huskies.

The final visitor is a recruit UConn sees as a must have. With elite line prospects Matt Greene and Naquan Foster leaning away from UConn, Forestville, Ohio native Cole Monroe is a ready made replacement for left tackle Kevin Jones. A 6’6, 313 pound prospect, Monroe is one of the top ten offensive tackles in this class. He possesses run blocking tendencies, but is a solid prospect altogether who could blossom into an elite player. UConn is in the middle of a tight race, needing to fend off Temple and Maryland, who has beaten out UConn for a handful of prospects in recent years.

          Shatner (65 OVR, 87 SPD, 88 ACC, 54 TAK, 76 HPW, 76 PUR, 70 PRC, 75 MCV, 70 ZCV, 80 PRS)

          Monroe (75 OVR, 61 SPD, 89 ACC, 83 STR, 76 PBK, 85 RBK, 81 IBK)

          Other Recruiting News

UConn has begun to make cuts to the original recruiting board, with blue-chip athlete prospect O.J. Orr excluding the Huskies from his final list. UConn has also taken all points out of #1 running back Darren Allen from their board as it becomes apparent UConn will not win that battle - he’s currently leaning toward Wisconsin. The same goes for four-star safety prospect Keith Stephens, who has a soft commit to Arizona State, and four-star corner Javion Hartfield, a verbal commit to N.C. State. Five-star wideout Ben Hilliard Jr. is leaning away from UConn, as is athlete Ardarius Watts, who is favoring conference rival Syracuse.

UConn’s top recruiting board target, four-star linebacker Payton Ash, has UConn still in contention, but we’re in a tight race with BYU and Florida, among others. That battle may stretch into the offseason.

UConn has lined up visits later in the season for other top targets as well, including defensive linemen Jamar Sledge, Andre Cwik and Eric Reddick, #1 quarterback Alex Ferguson, tight ends Evan Jeppesen and Tate McCall as well as three-star corner Marquice Lenon.

We will continue to provide updates about commitments, and we’ll check back in with another formal update in Week 10.

Tough loss for you guys against UCF. Hope you can bounce back.
Very true! And the good news for you is that A.) there is another CAC in the Big 12 whose team has skidded out of the gates that you'll likely play later on and B.) you have another CAC game in Week 6 against Coach Francisco and UMass. Fingers crossed, and maybe you'll get to three wins before starting Big 12 play. Hopefully you'll get Saulsberry back too, I'm not sure what caused him to miss the last game.

As for UConn, we're entering our toughest stretch of the season. We already had UCF, we've got VA Tech up next, and then a ranked Pitt team after that. A win against Tech could certainly get us back on the right track, but a loss likely ends our season. Big, big game.. thanks Nick!

                UConn Flashback

2021: Virginia Tech did their part to rudely welcome UConn to the ACC last season, handing the Huskies a rare defeat at home. Kevin Mark came up with the crucial fumble six that gave Virginia Tech the upset victory, which also spurred UConn's improbable ten-game win streak and national title. Relive the game here!

                  The Redemption Trail

UConn, down to fourth string running back Shaffer, staves off Hokies to make up for last year’s upset

Pressed into action in the fourth quarter, fourth string tailback Jonathan Shaffer helped ease UConn to victory with a few late conversions and first downs.

Last season, Virginia Tech tested UConn’s football team and dealt them a rare blow at home.

This season, Virginia Tech tested UConn’s football team again with what will likely go down as one of UConn’s closest games of the season. This time, though, UConn pulled through despite some additional adversity.

The fourteenth-ranked Huskies eked out a 31-26 victory over the visiting, number-11 Hokies, despite playing most of the fourth quarter with fourth-string, redshirt freshman tailback Jonathan Shaffer on the field after minor injuries to J.P. Byers (ankle), Ashanti Swift (elbow), and Mike Molden (undisclosed) took all of the top three running backs out of commission for the day. All should be good to go next week. Nevertheless, the Oklahoman Shaffer was forced to come in, wrap up an ugly game offensively with a few late conversions, and send UConn home a winner again. Not pretty, but effective anyway.

“Ugly games like these showcase how much depth and perseverance our team has. That will go a long way”, commented quarterback Jordan Brown after the game.

UConn managed to build up a scant 17-9 halftime lead on the strength of two short runs from option quarterback Linzell Tyson and fullback Dallas Freeman, answered by three Jeremy Cameron field goals for the Hokies. The option run game with freshmen Tyson and Swift under center has thrived in recent weeks, as Tyson ran for 60 yards today on just eight carries, while genuinely looking more comfortable controlling the offense.

Tech had some scoring opportunities early, but could not convert. On their opening drive of the game, nearing the end zone, senior star quarterback Jay Fuqua threw toward the end zone in the direction of Mekarri Benes. Benes had just made a tremendous one-handed grab a few plays earlier, but the second pass was more ill-advised as Jevon Sapp ended up snagging an interception on a weak throw over the middle. While seemingly minor early, that stop would prove to go a long way later on.

Jevon Sapp’s interception - which saved a touchdown - proved very critical to the outcome despite occurring in the first quarter.

The defenses came to play right from the jump, as UConn forced three turnovers while Tech sacked Jordan Brown five times on the afternoon. Sophomore Shane West tallied three while classmate Martin Filer added one of his own. Safety Davondre Wooten added a dozen tackles to show the way. Tech’s success up front amplified UConn’s continued offensive line woes, despite inserting JUCO transfer Nate Dotson into the starting lineup this week over Michael Clark at right tackle. Tech tallied a dozen TFL’s in total, West (four) and Filer (three) leading the way. Moving forward, head coach Stephen Belichick denied the need to address starters along the offensive line, but it became clear that something may need to be switched up. “They’ve got some good players up front”, complimented Belichick.

Jordan Brown was under pressure all day long, here from Terrance Danoff (LEFT) and young Martin Filer (RIGHT).

Despite the pressure, UConn did enough to hang onto control of the game most of the way. Into the third quarter, UConn continued to stifle Tech offensive drives. Though Fuqua threw 49 times for 368 yards, he only tossed one touchdown, while running back Willie Merritt only gained 58 yards before leaving with a shoulder injury of his own. Tech’s usually solid running game managed just 95 yards against the UConn front seven.

Jordan would later toss a touchdown to Devin Brown to increase UConn’s advantage to 24-12. Devin would once again lead UConn receivers with six grabs for 107 yards and the touchdown; the redshirt junior continues to be the surprise leading receiver from the slot as defenders have begun to put more focus on Chamarkelle Byrom and Lonte’ Speier while the offensive line has been struggling as of late - Devin’s routes over the middle are easier for Jordan to target with little time.

Devin Brown continues to make big plays and lead the UConn receivers.

Later in the third, freshman tailback Quavean Arnold closed the gap for Tech with a short rushing touchdown of his own. This let UConn nurse a 24-19 lead into the fourth quarter, and begun to get to work putting the game away. Early in the period, Jordan fired a touchdown pass to Byrom to give UConn a two score lead. From there, it was up to the defense and Shaffer to help nurse UConn to victory.

A couple of gutsy runs from Shaffer, including a fourth-and-short conversion around midfield, and a few stops including a Tory Greening interception off a tipped ball helped UConn outlast a late Tech surge. Greening’s interception served a big shift in momentum and was a fantastic play regardless. Fuqua somehow evaded a swarm of UConn pass rushers and fired the pass off to Trandon Yancey, who couldn’t quite hang on to the bullet pass. With the ball floating to the ground, Greening bent over and corralled the ball before it hit the ground to give UConn possession.

This entire play was spectacular, but paid off for UConn. Fuqua escaped danger somehow and got the pass off, but Yancey could only tip it and Tory Greening (RIGHT) picked the ball off before it hit the ground.

Fuqua would recover to toss his only touchdown of the day to Jake Hall on the next drive to close the gap, but that would be as close as they got. Despite getting the ball back again late and pulling to within range for a hail mary, dime safety/corner Aaron Brook intercepted Fuqua to wrap up a UConn victory, the third takeaway of the game for the Husky defense. While Tech can look to Merritt’s injury as a turning point, Fuqua threw three interceptions compared to just one touchdown, offsetting his impressive 368 passing yards.

Virginia Tech’s offense was impressive, as shown by Jake Hall’s touchdown and Mekarri Benes’ awesome one-handed grab, but that did not do enough for Tech to win.

“We’ve got to do a better job converting our scoring opportunities”, commented Tech head coach Lane Kiffin. “Props to UConn, they have a lot of ways to beat teams and proved it today.”

UConn, with the win, runs their record to 4-1 overall, and a solid 2-0 in ACC play. They may be able to move back inside the top ten of the AP poll this week, just two weeks after fading following the loss to UCF. Virginia Tech suffers their second straight setback in ACC play, having lost to North Carolina last week. They fall to 3-2, 1-2 in conference.

Next week, the Huskies welcome Pitt, their third straight ranked opponent, to The Property for the first time since the two were Big East members in 2012. UConn won that last meeting.

Though it was a narrow win, and certainly not one of UConn’s best performances, a win is a win and Coach Belichick realizes this. “We’ve had better days. We’ll try again against Pittsburgh”, the always-quiet coach stated in his post-game presser. There is reason to be concerned as the offensive line looked overwhelmed again, the run game once again failed to find continuity and the offense struggled to score late in the game.

But in this business, sometimes doing just enough in a tough test is satisfactory.

Look for more Linzell Tyson in the coming weeks? He ran for a touchdown today, and looks a lot more comfortable running the option offense designed for him.

                        ------------------------------------------

DT Madison, OT Dotson in starting lineup against Pitt

UConn has made some noteworthy changes to the starting lineup for their upcoming contest against Pitt, labeled as "experiments" by coach Belichick and is not to be taken as permanent.

The most unexpected change comes at nose tackle, where true freshman Tarik Madison is slated to get his first career start over fourth-year junior Jeremy Broadricke, who has been the starter since the middle of last year. Broadricke, a former four-star prospect from Los Angeles, has gotten off to a slow start in 2022, recording just seven tackles in the first five games, three for loss, while recording no sacks. The 6-foot-5, 280 pounder has only recorded one sack in his career and has been a liability in run defense at times. Madison and Broadricke will flip spots on the depth chart, while redshirt freshmen Ethan Buckingham and Matt Tellers will remain third and fourth.

Meanwhile, Nate Dotson will get his chance to start at right tackle, replacing Michael Clark on a temporary basis. A junior college transfer from Connecticut, Dotson will be tasked with patching up a right tackle spot that has been disappointing for a few years. Clark has allowed seven sacks in the opening five games this season and has struggled mightily in run blocking. Clark gave up 14 sacks in 15 games last year.

Junior Joe Sykes will remain third on the depth chart; he has not played much since a memorable implosion against Penn State in last season’s opener, allowing five sacks in three quarters of work. Clark certainly has not been terrible - he was able to stabilize the right tackle spot slightly - but Coach Belichick is clearly looking for more consistent play.

                        ------------------------------------------

                        LB Brown on injury report

Senior linebacker Alex Brown has been placed on the injury report this week with migraines. Brown was blindsided during a scrimmage and has been held out for most of the week as a precaution. Brown has been listed as probable and he said he will make every effort to be out there for his team. Should Brown be unable to go, Kion East would be the most likely fill-in, and I’d expect him to earn additional snaps in today’s contest regardless.

                          The Kids Are Alright

Up 31-3 at halftime, UConn blows out Pitt to wrap up homestand, move to 5-1

You could argue that everything fell UConn’s way in the rainy Property; sophomore Tory Greening makes a circus interception for the second straight week.

After a loss three weeks ago and a narrow victory last week, the third time was the charm for UConn against ranked opponents.

Jumping out to a 24-0 lead and a 31-3 halftime advantage, UConn cruised to victory over eleventh-ranked Pitt by a final of 38-17 at Rentschler Field and The Property. The game wraps up a four game homestand, and the third consecutive game for UConn against a top-15 opponent.

Pacing UConn in the winning effort was sophomore quarterback Jordan Brown, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for another while completing 23 of his 28 passes. He threw both of his touchdowns in the first quarter, a 14 yard pass to Alex Paige and a 13 yard pass to Lonte’ Speier. With a quick 14-0 lead, that would be almost all of the offensive cushion UConn needed.

UConn forced Pitt to the air, playing to the strength of their defense. While Pitt quarterback Jacob Daughtry is certainly a solid quarterback, by no means is he Tom Brady and naturally made some mistakes as Pitt’s offensive deficiencies were magnified playing from behind. As such, Kent Newton helped pad the lead by returning a Daughtry interception for a short touchdown to put UConn up 21-0 early in the going.

Senior Kent Newton is starting to look more like a #1 corner each week - he added another pick six on Saturday for his fourth robbery of the season.

Brown added a rushing touchdown to complete the trifecta in the first half, and coupled with a 37 yard Anthony Ricciardi field goal, UConn built a 31-3 halftime lead that signaled the end of the game early on. Pitt tacked on two touchdowns on a Daughtry run and a pass to redshirt freshman Quennell Bell, but Marcus Rodgers helped put the game away with an electrifying, zig-zagging 60 yard punt return touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

While the UConn offense was unspectacular, they were extremely efficient in the win, tallying only one turnover while also gaining 100 yards on the ground in addition to Brown’s day through the air. Today’s game marked the first 100-yard output for star tailback J.P. Byers this season, a sight for sore eyes after a very slow start to 2022. The contest was also nice to demonstrate that UConn is capable of scoring in a variety of ways, as evidenced by the defensive and special teams scores we saw.

Furthermore, there are a lot of positives to take away from UConn’s defensive performance. Daughtry was just above 50% through the air on 54 attempts, but UConn forced four turnovers. In addition to Newton’s pick six, Tory Greening recorded another toe-tapping sideline interception and Aaron Brook added another, making two straight games with interceptions for both.

Running back Jontre Welles and tight end Hakim Stiller were the main receiving targets for Pitt. Welles had ten catches, primarily on screen plays, gaining 90 yards, while Stiller caught eight balls for 79 yards. Welles caught more balls than he had rushing attempts, a ten to six split, as Pitt’s playing from behind forced the Panthers to shift their focus to the air on offense.

The Pitt offense found their bearings, but much too late. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Quennell Bell (LEFT) looks to have a bright future.

One of the main concerns UConn was hoping to address entering the game was the play of the offensive line, poor to say the least. Though Pitt’s defense was on the field for over two-thirds of the game, the results were not encouraging. Randy McMaster was easily Pitt’s player of the game, recording nine tackles, seven for loss, along with three sacks. Senior nose tackle Wade Paolera added two sacks while linebacker Liam Hornsleth recorded the lone interception of Jordan Brown.

McMaster played primarily on the side of temporary right tackle starter Nate Dotson, while Paolera did his damage against senior center Lawron Leak and sophomore guard Korey Davis-Love, who has noticeably struggled in pass coverage lately.

“We’ve still got some work to do”, noted head coach Stephen Belichick, and while there is always work to be done, an impressive win over a top-15 team is certainly a step in the right direction to the end goal of repeating as national champions.

Pitt falls to 3-2 with their loss, while UConn improves to 5-1, 3-0 in ACC play. The Huskies sit second in the conference right now, just behind Notre Dame, whom the Huskies play in November at The Property. UConn travels to Syracuse next week to take on the Orange, always a dangerous matchup with head coach Bryan Cook and the triple option. The Orange upset #18 Washington State (CAC HC Kaelyn Willingham - kswgrad2012) today and now sit at 4-2.

Both quarterbacks were under pressure all day. Jordan Brown (LEFT) was sacked many times once again, including thrice by junior end Randy McMaster. Here, Wade Paolera gets to the sophomore. Jacob Daughtry (RIGHT) goes down for Pitt courtesy of sophomore end Kiel Hughes.

Good rebound game after almost losing last week. The schedule should get easier from here out as well.

My boy Cutler receiving player of the week honors? I’m liking that, even if he’s on the opposite side of the ball from what I coach. As a Bears fan, it’s weird giving someone named Cutler praise #feelsgoodman

I've never been a fan of that funky "husky face" helmet lol...the sides are too plain for me!

Good bounce back so far from the loss, a playoff spot could still be on the line and maybe a return trip to the title game. There's plently to play for this season still.
