    (12) 55 --- 8-2 (6-1)

    20 --- 2-8 (2-5)

    FROSH AIR

UConn pulls away in second half thanks to Swift, record-tying five TDs; Newton snags career-high three interceptions; UConn returns to Hartford for Notre Dame showdown next week

Ashanti Swift broke out in a big way, powering in for five rushing touchdowns.

Ashanti Swift's performance in his tenth career college game was one that many of UConn’s greatest running backs never had. In a season that has often showcased a lackluster rushing attack compared to seasons past, the freshman attempted to put all of that to bed in one day. The blue-chip prospect from last year’s recruiting class tied a UConn record with five rushing touchdowns en route to a 55-20 rout of ACC cellar dwelling Louisville and CAC offensive coordinator Brian Woodard (user: mattynokes) on the road.

Another first half challenge for UConn proved no problem, as the Huskies rode a 38-10 second half scoring differential to the win after leading by just one touchdown at halftime. Four of Swift’s touchdowns came after the break to help the surge.

Today’s game looked quite similar to the Virginia contest last week, as some sloppy offense and a handful of turnovers for both sides kept the game close early. Each time either side had a chance to take advantage, an interception or fumble ruined a drive.

Swift’s first touchdown helped put UConn up 7-0 midway through the first quarter, and the teams traded short field goals from Anthony Ricciardi and Broderick Burse to make the game 10-3 after a quarter. The second quarter would find both teams trade touchdowns; Jordan Brown threw his only touchdown of the day to Devin Brown from eight yards out, while Brian Vinson connected with Tommy Wright for a six-yard score for Louisville. However, for the success both teams had moving the ball downfield, there was adversity to overcome as well.

Vinson threw three interceptions to Kent Newton in the first half (a career high for the senior, who now has seven robberies on the season). UConn lost two fumbles by way of defensive end Randarrius Barrea (11 tackles, two sacks), and LaMarcus Gordon intercepted Jordan as the Huskies were moving downfield in the second quarter. UConn also missed a field goal right before the half; a 35-yarder from Ricciardi pulled right, and though he went 2-3 on field goals, another miss from last year’s freshman All-American continues to cause concern. He is now just 10-for-17 this fall.

Kent Newton’s astonishing three first-half interceptions helped keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard early.

While the hapless Cardinals were able to hang in for a while, just as Virginia did last week, eventually UConn proved to be too much. Jordan Brown (22-34, 301 yards and a score) moved UConn downfield time and again with seemingly surgical precision, and each drive culminated with power near the goalline. Devin Brown, who led the team with seven grabs and 142 yards, contributed a big first down reception on each drive as well, while receivers Marcus Rodgers, Alex Paige helped move the ball continually in six-to-nine yard increments before Swift would drop the hammer at the goalline. He accounted for three of his short touchdown runs in this stretch.

Meanwhile, Louisville, possessing the worst offense in the entire nation, struggled to get anything going after the break. At one point, the Cards went three and out on three straight drives, while failing to convert on fourth down another time. The Cards gained 281 yards of offense, and Vinson threw two touchdowns in total (a toe-tapping touchdown pass to Isaiah Pighetti put Louisville on the board late). However, the choice to not get a run game going hurt their chances. Marqueese Smith was their leading rusher with just 58 yards, while their impact tailback Damon Bucolo did not gain any yards. Pighetti was perhaps Louisville’s best player on the day, racking up ten catches and 99 yards plus the score, but he also dropped five balls thrown his way.

Two of the only highlights for Louisville’s offense - Isaiah Pighetti’s nice toe-tapping touchdown catch (LEFT), and Tommy Wright’s touchdown catch (RIGHT). Note recently benched Tony Rush in the background (#6) - he’s been playing dime safety packages the past two weeks.

As a result of the inconsistency on the other end and a strong showing in the second half, UConn ripped off three Swift touchdowns with the first-team offense compared to just another field goal for Burse and the Cardinals in a span of ten minutes. The 41-13 lead UConn built was enough for Coach Stephen Belichick and he promptly pulled the starters for most of the fourth frame. Just as they did last week, many of the youngsters played inspired ball and kept the scoring coming at a rapid pace. Kelly Carlson threw his first career touchdown pass, a 40-yard bomb to Rodgers, while freshmen Avan Goulding and Ethan Buckingham teamed up for a forced fumble and recovery. Converted linebacker Kion East also recorded his first career interception.

The closing act was Swift, however. Taking the ball at the Cardinal 13, Carlson scrambled for seven before Swift bulldozed his way through the Louisville front and stumbled over the goalline for the record tying fifth touchdown, capping off a 55-21 mauling. Swift’s performance ties Luke Williamson’s five that he posted against Boston College in 2020 - Williamson is the leading rusher in UConn history.

“I felt great all game”, Swift commented. “Our boys up front have been improving the last two weeks and I feel a lot more comfortable now. This is only the beginning”. In addition to the five touchdowns, Swift added career highs with 35 carries and 143 yards.

"They're a tough team to prepare for", noted offensive coordinator Woodard during Louisville's post-game presser, head coach Dave Steckel by his side. "They've been running more multiple packages lately but their 3-4 front is still suffocating. They're talented up and down the depth chart." Steckel went on to single out praise for the youngsters, including redshirt freshman corner Kelvin Cooke, who recorded his first career sack today after an interception last week, and senior Mike Hill, who led UConn in tackles again and will likely cross the century mark next week.

UConn defensive coordinator Don Pellum succeeded at mixing up packages and catching the Cardinals confused and fatigued at times. Still, he lauded the Cardinals for not giving up, and mentioned he liked the play of their young skill players and sophomore linebacker Justin Osbjornson, a rising star who recorded a sack of Jordan Brown along with six tackles, a stat he currently leads his team in.

Despite the goodwill being shown by the former Big East rivals, in his true pessimistic fashion Coach Belichick wanted to pay attention to his team's poor start. The second-year head coach noted that UConn needs "to play four full quarters if we want to win next week”.

On the topic of next week, UConn’s win sets up a primetime showdown against Notre Dame that will help determine who plays in the ACC title game in three weeks’ time. The Irish have been looking and playing like a playoff team in recent weeks; this week they clinched a berth in the ACC title game after dismantling fifth-ranked Pitt. Miami and UConn sit tied for second place, both sporting a 6-1 ACC record.

UL looked good defensively early on, but couldn’t keep it together late in the going. LaMarcus Gordon (LEFT) intercepts Jordan Brown, while star sophomore Justin Osbjornson records a sack (RIGHT). Randarrius Barrea chipped in two forced fumbles and two sacks as well.

Devin Brown (LEFT) and Marcus Rodgers (RIGHT) on touchdown receptions. Rodgers has begun to look like the legitimate deep threat we like to see, and a solid fourth option in the pass game.

You're absolutely right it was, and as it turns out your prediction of Swift's breakout was just a week early.

While the "cupcake" section of the schedule proved to be a little harder than we expected at times (see, Boston College), our guys showed good resolve. My hope, however, is that we are well-prepared for Notre Dame, who is by far the best team on our schedule, in the ACC, and maybe the entire country. I hate Notre Dame for everything they're worth (I'm a USC and Boston College fan, two of their biggest rivals), but they could and should be repping the ACC when the Playoff bracket releases.

We'll look closer when the game preview goes up, but they are very young, very deep, especially at spots where we don't match up well, and extremely talented. I'm legitimately worried about getting destroyed, seeing as how they're red hot and just whacked Pitt by 35 points. Luckily, though, that's just my pessimistic opinion and we get to settle things on the field instead.

*Disclaimer that I have not played the game yet and am not spoiling anything. Promise.

Thanks as always for checking in bud! For a long time, the run game has been the heart and soul of our offense, so the turmoil and injuries we've had at that spot this year has certainly hurt our offensive output. It's nice to see Swift step up, as now we have someone we can rely on when next season rolls around, assuming J.P. Byers turns pro as I think he will.

I've been taking an extremely pessimistic approach to the ND game. The way we've played at times has not always been indicative of an ACC Title team, so I think we could be in trouble against a team that simply looks more talented than we are top to bottom. I also believe that this Notre Dame team is much better than the one we destroyed last year. However, it's always a joy to prove oneself wrong; I'm going to sit down and play the game tomorrow morning, so fingers crossed!

            * ED NOTE: The MAC Michigan Trophy is split for (I believe) the third year in a row - each team went 1-1 against the other: Central beat Eastern but lost to Western, Western beat Central but lost to Eastern, and Eastern beat Western but lost to Central. Brownie points if you managed to keep up with that .

If the series ends in a tie like that, I believe the cup stays with the school who won it the previous year. At least until basketball seasons rolls around, and then whoever wins the series in basketball gets the trophy until football season the following fall

                  100% Chance of Snow

The Hartford Courant's top headline this morning screamed "SNOWPOCALYPSE!" and for good reason. The Hartford region is about to be drenched with up to a foot of snow on Friday night in a fun little storm before Thanksgiving. Expect a lot of white stuff on the floor of the Property come gametime!

                  Senior Day

Somehow, we only have eight seniors on our team this year, and as such, Senior Day festivities will be short! The following will be recognized before the game:

                  LT Kevin Jones
                  C Lawron Leak
                  DE James Mandrell
                  LB Mike Hill
                  LB Alex Brown
                  LB A.J. Paxston
                  CB Kent Newton
                  CB Sam Barnett

Thanks! As long as you stick with your dynasty you can do it anytime - I added the first CAC guys in season 3 - we're in season nine now. It's a lot of extra work to track it as in-depth as I do but I LOVE following the entire dynasty universe, not just UConn.

I reposted the CAC sign up form about three pages back if you're interested in entering the pool; I think you'd enjoy following along even more if you had a part in the report. Of course, that's your call, but it's fun (and sometimes nauseating) to follow the successes (and mostly failures) of your CAC.

I don't think there is anything more rewarding for a small school than smashing their Big Boy Bowl (TM) dreams. Especially if it's a rival!

That's interesting on the trophy.. I think this is the third season in a row the trophy has gone unclaimed. Also, because we have users at all three directional schools, I'm surely going to offend someone if I pick a school at random, so let's just say the trophy is hiding in an abandoned warehouse until someone actually does win, like UConn's Civil Conflict Trophy.

Big matchup between two high powered offenses. I get a feeling this could honestly be a situation where 1-2 stops is a deciding factor. Take down the Irish, climb back up the polls!

This is looking like it could be a game for the ages man. Two highly ranked teams this late in the season playing in a game with 100% chance of snow, if nothing else this should be super fun.

This will certainly be a great game, and you make a great point SB. Two good defenses square off in a game where each possession will matter, and the weather could certainly play a big role as you mentioned, dfs. The snow means that passing the ball could be tougher, and if that's true then the game reverts to a pair of ground chuck offenses, and it's a battle of the brutes.

If the game goes to the running backs, I feel that we could be at a disadvantage. This is solely because the Irish have two studs in McDuffie and Bainbridge while we trot out a true freshman in Swift and a decent but not spectacular backup in Molden. While our defense can certainly hold up against anyone, look no further than the UCF game to expose some struggles we've had defending the run game this season. I'd be willing to bet that Coach Belichick has done his homework between then and now, though.

Beating ND will put us right back into the playoff race that I had previously thought we were out of, so hopefully we can take care of business and move back into the top ten. If we lose, our season is pretty much over, so a lot is on the line. Just know, though, assuming we make the ACC Title Game, we'll have to see these guys again!

Regardless, this matchup was indeed EXTREMELY fun - nothing beats playing in the snow!

It's been an odd season for a lot of CACs to this point. Thankfully, Saulsberry (86 OVR) is still just a sophomore, plus you return tailback Courtney Townsend (84 OVR) and all of your receivers next year sans tight end Andre McCutcheon. Junior JaCorey Sullivan (77 OVR) and sophomore Tyrin Johnson (77 OVR) are guys I'd look out for in coming years.

You've got a small recruiting class to this point, but you've got an interesting running back (Khalil Weir) and local tight end prospect (Chase Parr) that are worth keeping an eye on - both 3-star guys. A bowl game should be the expectation for you next year, and hopefully that will get you moving up the coaching ladder sooner rather than later. The advantage for you is that playing in the Big 12 gets you more exposure than many others, especially if you win.

The Notre Dame game was a lot of fun to play, and I've gotten the Wake Forest game played as well to get me up to champ week. Let's just say I absolutely cannot wait to post the rest of the season up here.

                            THANKS GUYS!

                              BEST IN SNOW

Swift adds 100 more yards, three touchdowns as UConn guts out victory over ACC-leading Irish, step closer to ACC Title Game; Husky D allows just one touchdown to talented Irish offense

Swift continued his fine running as of late with another 100-yard performance.

Somehow, improbably, UConn is back in the College Football Playoff race. Facing effective elimination from the ACC race and the CFP, UConn tallied a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns and triumphed 28-20 over the third-ranked Irish. UConn is now in the driver’s seat to play in the ACC Title Game in a few weeks’ time. The best team UConn has faced this season by far, the hype preceding the game was justified as the Irish gave the Huskies a classic, old-fashioned defensive duel in a snow-soaked Rentschler Field, which was even more raucous than usual on senior day.

And as with most duels, no matter how good the fight, the heroes always emerge victorious when it's do or die.

Evidence to the stellar defensive performance both sides put on, each team only cracked the scoreboard once in the first quarter. New starting safety Aaron Brook set the tone early, intercepting Irish signal caller Derek Taylor on the fifth play of the game, a duck thrown to the right side and returned for a short gain. Several three and outs followed before the Irish finally put together a thirteen-play, 83-yard drive ending in a 28-yard Parker Standridge field goal. With only eight yards of offense to that point, UConn used the triple option team to spark the offense as they have many times this season. Freshman two-way dynamo Linzell Tyson moved the Huskies downfield effortlessly, eventually scoring on a 17-yard run from freshman star Ashanti Swift.

Aaron Brook helped justify his inclusion in the starting lineup with a nice interception early in the going.

The quiet offense continued into the second quarter. Swift added another touchdown from the goal line to cap off a fifteen-play drive, while the Irish only mustered another pair of field goals from Standridge; that would be all for the first half. UConn held a 14-9 lead and the game had been set for a defensive barnburner; we weren’t disappointed.

UConn’s lead would be short-lived, however; after UConn went 3 and out to start the half, Darrick Sanich did a nice job returning a Kyle January punt to the 50 yard line; two completions to freshman tight end Trevill Branson pushed the Irish near the red zone before taking the lead back. Taylor, not exactly known as a dual-threat, fooled the entire UConn defense on a read option, dodged a few ill-advised dives from Husky defenders and ran for a 25 yard score. Sophomore wideout Eboniray Potter caught the two point try on a slant route to give the Irish a 17-14 lead.

Reserve DT John Wilson helped Notre Dame make some stops in the second half with a series of TFLs.

Thanks in part to some timely stops from reserve senior defensive lineman John Wilson, UConn stalled out a promising drive and Notre Dame continued to move the ball well. Pulling out a fourteen play drive this time, Notre Dame marched downfield on the strength of ten-plus yard pass plays to tailback Thad Bainbridge and the Irish’s leading receiver Duke St. Clair (six catches for 97 yards on the day). However, once again they could only manage a field goal from Standridge, and retained just a one score lead at 20-14.

With the third quarter winding down, UConn approached midfield when Jordan Brown threw into a one on one looking for Lonte’ Speier. Though the sensational sophomore receiver made a season high eleven catches for 98 yards, the defender on this play was Notre Dame’s best, senior corner Garvin Handley. Handley, fending off a pectoral injury, applied tight coverage, intercepted the pass and gave the Irish the ball just past midfield.

Notre Dame took the lead in the third quarter with a rushing touchdown from Taylor (LEFT) and held it with an interception from Garvin Handley (RIGHT).

Despite the good field position, though, the UConn defense held firm. After an eight yard Taylor completion to Tavon Rice, two straight incompletions left the ball at the 38 yard line and on a 4th and 2 situation. Instead of going to Standridge, an All-American kicker, for the long field goal, the Irish elected to go for it. The fullback dive play to freshman Lance Tanner was held short by Alex Brown and a group of Husky defenders. UConn had the ball back.

They responded into the fourth quarter with a nice drive; Speier caught two first down passes while Swift and Mike Molden helped move the ball into the red zone. Instead of them finishing up the drive, however, it would be Jordan Brown, he of the statue legs, who ran in the five yard score on a scramble to the right sideline. With the successful PAT, UConn held a one-point lead.

Jordan Brown is not known for his legs, but is certainly capable for a few yards to catch the defense off guard, as shown here. He also passed at a decent clip once again.

The defenses began to dig in once again, and made for some exciting football, if you’re into that sort of thing, as several key players came up with key stops. Defensive end James Mandrell added two sacks to up his team lead in that stat to 11, while Kiel Hughes came away with TFL’s as well to snuff out two Notre Dame drives. On the other side, defensive backs Michael Temple and Jabari Lamarque made third-down stops of their own as a compelling finish began to brew.

Finally, in the back half of the fourth, UConn extended their precarious one point lead and tacked on another score. The Brown-to-Brown connection was in full swing that drive, as slotman Devin Brown sprinted open and up the seam for a 47 yard gain before Swift punched in a ten-yard score, his third of the day, to give UConn a 28-20 lead. UConn was far from out of the woods, however.

Sanich, showing why he is an impact player as a return man, brought the ensuing kickoff back to midfield, and Taylor went to work. A pass to Potter for 13 yards kicked off the drive, but Notre Dame only gained eight yards on the next three plays, forcing another fourth and two.

The Irish elected for the speed option again, but this time it backfired. Had Taylor pitched to Bainbridge on the left side, they would have had the first down without any issue and perhaps scored, considering he was a solid 30 of 45 for 273 yards on the day. However, A.J. Paxston, one of UConn’s senior linebackers being celebrated for a great and completed career, blew up the play and Taylor was down for a turnover on downs. UConn ran out the rest of the clock and locked up a critical win that keeps their season and playoff dreams alive. UConn will remain at second place in the ACC, needing only a win next week against Wake Forest or a Miami loss against North Carolina State to advance to the ACC Title Game for the second straight year.

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here”, commented Coach Stephen Belichick. “We played well and got a good win, but we still have Wake Forest next week”. Offensive coordinator Bill Cubit laughed and added “Well, we heard the man!”

In the mirror, this game was interesting as neither side threw for a touchdown. For the Irish, that likely spelled the difference as they elected to go with short passes and screens in space instead of plowing up the middle with their star tailbacks. Perhaps that is to be expected in snowy conditions where the ball is harder to hold, but nevertheless unexpected for two teams that have good quarterbacks and a lot of talented receivers. Even so, Notre Dame and UConn displayed versatile attacks and put up a fight that showed why either could be a tough out in the College Football Playoff. With any luck, we’ll get another classic showdown in a rematch for all the money in an ACC Title Game. Though it’s not definite, we’re certainly headed that way.

Two key stops helped UConn on to victory; Alex Brown’s stop of Lance Tanner (LEFT), and A.J. Paxston’s stop of Derek Taylor on 4th and 3 at the end of the game (RIGHT).

Remaining Schedules for Conference Title Contenders:
                                NOTRE DAME: @ Stanford (CLINCHED)
UCONN: @ Wake Forest - Clinch with win
MIAMI: vs. NC State - Clinch (likely) with win AND UConn loss

Notre Dame has clinched their spot in the ACC Title Game. If UConn wins against Wake Forest this week, they will clinch the second spot. Should they lose, Miami needs only to win to jump to the second spot and play the Irish. Though we would be tied in this instance, I’m not sure what the tiebreaker would be; I just let the game do its thing.
