HEARTBREAKER IN OXFORD AS SWARM FALL 30-23

Despite 247 rushing yards and 4 first half picks, Swarm fail to hold on to the ball as Wendell Hearn throws for just 46 yards on 6/22 passing -- Alonzo Smith posts career day with 200 yards, 3 scores -- Hearn at odds with running back group after locker room spat following the loss

2 of the 4 first half picks for Westlake State's defense

Oxford, OH -- "Heartbreaking. Devastating. Infuriating." Those are adjectives Westlake State head coach Dion Barkley used to describe the team's 30-23 loss to the Miami Redhawks. There were definite positives. The Swarm led a game for the first time ever, leading as late as the 4th quarter. The offense managed to post 241 rushing yards, averaging 6 yards a rush. The defense picked off Redhawks signal-caller Greg Ragland 4 times in the first half. But there were also glaring negatives. Wendell Hearn completed 6 of 22 passes for 46 yards. Those 241 rushing yards? Likely an outlier caused by a few long runs from Dionte Norton and Hearn. That passing defense? Nowhere to be found as Ragland shredded them when it counted most.

It was the best start to a game so far for the Swarm, as after allowing the Redhawks to get into the red zone, true freshman Terrence Owens would make his second interception in as many weeks. He's playing dime corner after starter Martin Finley was ruled out for the year following concussions in back-to-back weeks. They rode the momentum, putting together a good drive that ended in a Wendell Hearn touchdown pass to Zeph Connor. That TD pass marked the first time that Westlake State had ever led a game.

Zeph Connor catches the first score of the game

But Miami were able to drive down the field and get into range for a 41 yard kick from Sam Sloman, one of the sophomore's 3 field goals on the day. They followed it up with a defensive stop and another good drive that ended with a 6 yard touchdown run from Alonzo Smith. A Swarm drive fizzled out, then Ragland threw another pick, this time to Deonte Abrams. But Westlake State couldn't take advantage of good field position, with Wendell Hearn throwing a redzone pick.

After the pick, Ragland and the Redhawks went on a long drive, getting all the way to the Swarm 17, where Ragland threw an ill-advised deep ball, which was picked off by freshman corner Abdul Coles, the first of his 2 first-half interceptions. But Westlake State couldn't capitalise, with Wendell Hearn failing to hit open receivers twice in yet another 3 and out.

Both quarterbacks were looking shaky, so Westlake State went away from the pass, using Mason Benjamin and Jaron Alfred to get yards up the middle, with Dionte Norton coming in as a change-of-pace back. Wendell Hearn attempted one pass all drive, on the drive's first play. He missed badly, and didn't throw it again. Benjamin and Alfred took handoffs between the tackles for 8 consecutive plays, gaining 38 yards, before Hearn broke a zone read for 17 yards and a big first down. After a couple more bruising runs from Benjamin, Dionte Norton came in. He took an outside handoff, spun a Redhawk linebacker out of his shoes, and outran everyone else for a 24 yard score.

Halftime came shortly after that, with the Swarm up 14-10. The 3rd quarter opened with Sloman kicking a long 50 yarder after the Redhawk offense sputtered. But Westlake State couldn't take advantage, going 3 and out. Miami went 3 and out, then the Swarm went on a drive that ultimately fizzled in long field goal range. But they opted for a punt instead, and Leslie Motley pinned Miami back at their own 1. Alonzo Smith, who had over 200 yards on the day, gained nothing on 1st down, and on second down, was brought down in his own endzone by safety Donte Oliver. The safety extended Westlake State's lead to 3 points, and with possession, had a chance to take control of the game heading into the 4th quarter. But yet again, the offense failed to deliver after the defense made a big stop. Miami got the ball back, and went on a quick drive, capped by an 8 yard score from Smith.

Smith goes down in the endzone

20-16 for the Redhawks to open the 4th. Westlake State would score. A drive that saw 2 of Hearn's 6 completions on the day went the distance, with Hearn himself scoring the TD, a 13 yard scramble. 23-20, Swarm.

But those would be the last points of the day for Westlake State. Miami's next drive started with a few good runs from Smith, but at their own 31, they faced a 3rd and 10 after 3 straight incompletions. The coverage was good, and the play broke down, forcing Ragland to throw to James Gardner, who appeared to be out of bounds. Indeed, that was the call on the field. But video review overturned it, and the Swarm were livid about it.

Certainly looks like Gardner had a foot out of bounds

That play changed the game. If Westlake State gets that stop, they have the ball, probably in solid field position, with around 3 and a half minutes left. Instead, Miami had all the momentum, and got a quick 40 yards before the Swarm defense woke up. The drive ended with a 33 yard kick, and the game tied at 23.

So once again, the outcome was in the hand of Westlake State. 1st down saw Mason Benjamin gain 4 yards. 2nd down, Redhawks stack the box and Benjamin only gets a yard. 3rd and 5. Wendell Hearn fakes a handoff, rolls right, takes off and gets only 3 yards. From their own 32, they had to punt.

Miami football. Alonzo Smith gains 28 yards on his first 3 carries of the drive. Gus Ragland then does his best Tom Brady impression, completing 6 straight passes to get all the way to the Swarm 9. 24 seconds left. Handoff to Smith, he goes 9 yards for the score, untouched.

Swarm defenders throw their hands up in dismay

Ballgame. Westlake State tried having strong-armed QB Daniel Cummings chuck it deep with 21 seconds to go, but he couldn't get a pass off on the game's last 2 plays.

Swarm head coach Dion Barkley spoke to us briefly on the field postgame, offering a few thoughts on the game.

After the game, Barkley talked to the team for a bit, then left the arena. After he and most of the coaching staff left, Wendell Hearn got into it with Jaron Alfred. Alfred criticized Hearn's performance, and Hearn took issue with that, turning on his backs and offensive line, saying they weren't protecting him well enough, before telling Alfred he should "have more than 30 yards before talking". He then left the locker room.

The Swarm will play 2-1 (0-0) Ohio in Akron next week.

I enjoyed that Miami write up. Very in depth man.

It was another tough loss, but a very competitive game. It may be even more heartbreaking to gather a lead late, then watch it slip away. Especially the drive that ended it. Back in my playing days, my junior year I only played offense as a receiver (senior year I was a tight end and outside linebacker/defensive end...I bulked a bit lol)...so from my "offense only" time I can say nothing is worse than sitting on that sideline watching the game slip away and knowing you can't do anything about it.

On another note, I'm very intrigued to see what happens with the team after the locker room drama. Hearn may not have started it, but a leader at QB doesn't throw guys under the bus. I benched a QB when he criticized his coaches and line

Most frustrating loss I've experienced on this game in a while. We had them all the way, then we just crumble after a bad call. Tough tough loss. You'll see what happens to Wendell Hearn very soon. I agree, can't be having a QB who doesn't get along with his guys, he's gotta lead.

About halfway through the post for games 4+5 (were both very boring games), and just played Bowling Green. Gonna try to get all that, Kent State, and LSU up over the weekend to take us into a bye week. Then I'll do a recruiting update, which is my favorite write up to do.

Thanks for checking in, and glad you like the Miami article. One of my better game write ups, I thought.

          Y1, G 4-5

So this is the first recap of this nature. Both of these games were extremely boring, any write up would be super short. This way I get to next season quicker. Trust me, if I do this it's for good reason. This won't continue when we're actually a decent team.

          G4 vs Ohio - L 24-34

The second quarter saw each team score 17 points. You would think that would be exciting but no, not today. Blown tackles, blown assignments, bad playcalling saw a bunch of easy scores. Not much happened the rest of this one. The first quarter was a snoozefest, and the teams looked like they were both trying really hard to lose the game. Once again, Westlake State had the chance to go up late, but a late pick while down 3 sealed it.

Mason Benjamin had a career day with 13 carries for 149 yards and 2 scores. 97 of those yards came on 2 carries: a 75 yard score and a 22 yard pickup.

Jeremy Ostrander came in for Wendell Hearn after the latter started 2 for 8 with a pick. Ostrander did well, going 16/23 for 140 yards, 1 TD 1 INT. He earned himself the start next week.

A.J. Ouellette did most of the damage for Ohio. The speedy tailback had 238 yards and 2 scores on 31 carries. Quarterback Nathan Rourke added 66 yards on the ground, and passed well, 14/22 with 2 scores and a pick, the pick coming on a first half Hail Mary.

          G5 vs Army - L 45-7

This was a horrible loss. Happens to be the first game I changed my sliders (lowered user RBA), also started using fatigue, but resetting at the half.

Army jumped out to a 28 point lead at the half, and the Swarm had managed just 3 first downs.

We gave up 420 rushing yards. They threw the ball 5 times out of 70 plays and managed a passing score. This was a winless team. QB Ahmad Bradshaw is not a former NY Giants running back, but he might as well have been. 174 and 4 scores on 19 carries. Made us look stupid all day. Jordan Asberry had 86 yards on just 11 carries.

So much for Jeremy Ostrander being a solid replacement for Wendell Hearn: he went 14/32 with 2 picks. Hearn came in with the rest of the backups and went 6/8 with our only score (I'll admit, I supersimmed after we were down 45-0). 4 of our 11 first downs came on this drive.

Brutal loss to Army. Their running game was killer, only 4 passes necessary. Westlake needs a win to just keep moral up lol. Ostrander had so much promise, but then again the whole team looked bad in that one.

Yeah we sucked. We desperately need a win, I'm trying to avoid my first winless season in a sports video game, so little extra motivation there. Got Kent State and Bowling Green recaps coming up soon, probably do Bowling Green later tonight. Gonna play LSU tomorrow most likely, I am not looking forward to that in the slightest.

                G6 @ Bowling Green - L 7-34

Gonna speed through this one cause I have an in-depth write up coming for the next game for sure. Yet another ugly loss. Kent State game was excellent though. Not gonna spoil the result, but it was a 3 point game.

Bowling Green were 0-6 coming in, and were sloppy and downright bad on offense in the first half, fumbling twice, including once in the redzone. They didn't score until halfway through the second. Unfortunately, the Swarm were even worse. We could barely move the ball, and our only score came early in the third. Jarret Doege went for 371 yards through the air, we had no answer for him. He added 57 yards rushing, to go with Andrew Clair's 80 yards on just 11 carries. It was backup Matt Domer who opened the scoring though, with a 6 yard TD on his only carry.

Jeremy Ostrander was awful yet again, and he gave way to Wendell Hearn. Hearn started off with a fumble on a scramble, that gave the ball to Bowling Green with a short field, setting up the score that opened the floodgates. He did get our only points on the day, with a zone read keeper for a short score on our only long drive of the game. Rushing wise, Jaron Alfred was good, with 84 yards on 11 carries, while Mason Benjamin was bad, with 10 carries for only 22 yards. Hearn threw well, at least on the statsheet: 12/18 for 92 yards. But he did nothing worth noting and 33 of his yards came on one Zeph Connor catch and run.

There were some bright points here against BG. No interceptions, and Alfred went for 7.6 yards/carry. That's definitely something to build on. I look forward to Kent State...fingers crossed!

                    FINALLY!

                    Celebrations after the game

First win in Westlake State history comes on the back of tailbacks Benjamin and Alfred -- Ostrander bounces back, does just enough to get the win -- Big INT from Quintin Nelson, lone TO of the game, sparks rally

They won't go winless. Westlake State defeated the Kent State Golden Flashes by a final score of 27-24, to win their first ever game. The win comes as a much-needed morale boost to a team that was reeling from back to back blowouts at the hands of Army, and a future MAC foe in Bowling Green. The combined score in those games? 79-14. This win should energize the team, and give the fans something to cheer for after a dismal start to the Swarm's inaugural season.

The driving force behind this win was the run game. Mason Benjamin and Jaron Alfred combined for a whopping 273 yards and 3 scores on just 28 carries. Dionte Norton chipped in 26 yards on his 3 carries. Jeremy Ostrander bounced back from last week's awful game to post a respectable statline of 15/30 passing, but the most important thing: no interceptions.

The Swarm started poorly. No points in the first quarter, to Kent State's lone field goal, a 47 yarder courtesy of Shane Hynes and a few seconds into the 2nd, they found themselves down 10-0, after tailback Justin Rankin capped a long Kent State drive with a 6 yard rushing score. Westlake State couldn't score on their next possession, as a long drive would fizzle out around the 40 yard line after Stanley Wayne dropped an open pass on 3rd down.

But Kent State couldn't score either, and the Swarm offense finally went to work. After a bad start to the game, Benjamin and Alfred finally started to get some yards on the ground. Westlake State needed just one completed pass to go 72 yards in 11 plays, as the drive ended in a 4 yard score from Benjamin. The Swarm looked to have gained some momentum, but Grant Marquardt missed the PAT, and Kent State's lead was still 10-6.

The Golden Flashes punted, and with 30 seconds left in the half, Westlake State had the ball on their own 21. Jeremy Ostrander dropped back and would be sacked, losing the ball, which was then scooped up by Devante Bell for a touchdown. It looked like this would be another game where a catastrophic error would sink Westlake State. But coach Dion Barkley threw his challenge flag, and after review of the play, the fumble was overturned, as Ostrander was ruled to have been down when he let go of the football. But the Swarm were still backed up to their own 15 with just 27 seconds to go in the half, and ran out the clock.

The 3rd quarter was mostly uneventful. Neither team could put together a good drive, until Kent State, up 10-6, gained 21 yards on their first 2 plays of a new drive. Had they kept that rolling, and gone up 17-6, Westlake State is probably 0-7. But cornerback Quintin Nelson came up big, jumping in front of a Nick Holley pass, giving the Swarm the ball back with a short field. And they took advantage.

                    This pick changed the game

They needed just 8 plays, all runs, before Mason Benjamin scored from the 1 to put the Swarm in front for the first time on the day. The defense proceeded to get a stop, and in a head-scratching move, Kent State opted to kick a 56 yard field goal. The kick came up well short, and the Swarm had possession, with great field position and a chance to go up 20-10. They would do so, with Alfred, Benjamin, and this time Norton taking them downfield, and Ostrander came up big in the redzone, completing 2 passes, one of them an 8 yard score to Zeph Connor.

                    Zeph Connor catches a score

Kent State wasn't going to give up yet. Holley, who was excellent aside from the interception with 221 yards on 23/28 passing, carved up the Westlake State secondary, and then backup running back Myles Washington burst past the tired defense for a 15 yard score. 20-17.

Gut check time. Up 3, a touchdown was likely needed, as Kent State's offense looked dangerous. The run game delivered a couple first downs, but then Jaron Alfred got blown up on 1st and 10 for a loss of 5. Second down, play fake, Ostrander tries to throw the ball, is hit as he throws and ends up throwing it backwards. But the football gods were smiling on the Swarm on this day, as guard Brannon Mayfield was right there to pick the ball out of the air and gain a couple yards back. He was injured on the play and replaced by Dane Chavez.

But the Swarm still faced a crucial 3rd and long. And the run game wasn't gonna be able to bail them out this time. Needing 14 yards, Ostrander found Connor on a deep curl pattern for 16 yards and a huge first down. The Swarm ran the ball, and got all the way down to the 10, forcing Kent State to use their timeouts. With 1:51 to go, Jaron Alfred ran right through a defender and stumbled into the end zone to give the Swarm a lead that they wouldn't relinquish.

Alfred iced the game on this play
Nick Holley led his team down the field in under a minute, throwing his only TD pass of the game with 51 seconds left, but the Swarm recovered the onside kick and kneeled out the clock.

Swarm players were elated after the game, with Jaron Alfred capturing the general sentiment well.

Managed to pick up a copy of Madden 25 today, so at some point I'll start running a franchise alongside this dynasty. Should be fun to see where our future superstars end up. Probably start that in year 3 or 4, when we start getting some guys that could maybe make it. Haven't been able to get the LSU game or recruiting update started yet, been busy.

NCAA 14 is the only reason I bought Madden all those years ago - import draft classes. You'll have a lot of fun playing with that. I'd suggest you look for good settings to maximize player development, that's been the one problem with my classes so far. Not perfect, but still a blast to work with.

Nice win over Kent (congrats for #1 BTW!), they definitely seem like a decent team. Awesome to see the two-headed monster at running back get going with 100+ yard days, hopefully they can keep it up in the next few weeks to give you all some momentum for the offseason.

I'm so glad I found it. Was at the mall setting up a job interview when I stopped by Gamestop, and they had M25. Thought I'd never see it again. I hope a future Westlake player makes it big in the league, be fun to control him in a big game. Not starting it right away though. What do you have progression set at? Haven't played Madden in over a year, I remember there being differences between weekly/monthly/yearly. I think adding a "real" NFL to this will be a lot of fun.

As far as the team right now goes, Alfred and Benjamin are literally our only talent right now. Norton is quick but after he had a score against Miami he's been invisible. Honestly thought I might go winless, got very lucky vs Kent. They called some very boneheaded plays and we took full advantage. I was concerned we'd go winless, honestly. But the year has gone by quite quickly, I was shocked we only have 4 games after the LSU game. Forgot how quick you can go in and out of seasons in this.

Really enjoying this so far, I've been taking it at my own pace and not burning myself out trying to push out recaps. The grind also feels really rewarding, like we suck, but I'm building towards being good. We have some very solid recruits that could be coming in, couple of complete steals that I found before the Big 10 schools got there. Unfortunately no great QB/HB to be had. If we get a good transfer at a skill position, we could win 4-5 games next year.

                              Thanks for checking in bro.

I hope a future Westlake player makes it big in the league, be fun to control him in a big game. Not starting it right away though. What do you have progression set at? My pleasure - I enjoy reading along with as many as these as I can. I'm looking forward to seeing the recruits!

I had development to set to weekly for a long time without catching it; that's likely where the problems stemmed. I've heard that monthly seems to make development better, so that's what I've set it to now. We'll see how that goes after I sim through the next season in a few weeks.
