Awesome win man! Some 4th quarter magic is always a nice touch. It’s amazing that you’re back in the playoff race, hopefully it stays that way!

That's interesting on the trophy.. I think this is the third season in a row the trophy has gone unclaimed. Also, because we have users at all three directional schools, I'm surely going to offend someone if I pick a school at random, so let's just say the trophy is hiding in an abandoned warehouse until someone actually does win, like UConn's Civil Conflict Trophy.
Nah, it's okay, just put it in Kalamazoo. Coach Harrison and the Broncos will make sure it's taken care of.

Huge win! Swift is really coming into his own down the stretch here. That was a statement game for sure. Seemed like a fun one.

Big win and at the right time too with how the weekend turned out. I know you beat a higher ranked opponent and gave up less points, but I'm going to be the devil's advocate on those late night college football talk shows saying UCLA should be #4 and UConn #5. Either way, the last few weeks should be interesting.

Fourth quarter magic has become a staple of this dynasty LOL. All of the wacky walk-offs we've had, miracle 20+ point comebacks, this one felt more normal than most. As long as we win, though, I don't care how we get there!

I'd have thought for sure that we were done for in the playoff race considering Ole Miss is still unbeaten and a bunch of others had one loss. Obviously our game against ND was going to decide the fate of our season (really good or really unsatisfying), but little did I expect so many others to have troubles.

From here out, it appears that we control our own destiny to get back to the CFP, which is always a nice thing. The problem is, we'll have to face Notre Dame again assuming we do still get to Champ Week. The Irish are very good, and the old saying goes that it's hard to beat a team twice (three times, etc.) in any given season.

3-8 won't cut it to automatically earn a trophy through my pity. Talk to me when you reach 6-6.

You're absolutely right, it was do or die for us in terms of the ACC and CFP races, and we caught a few lucky breaks with teams around us. I'm pretty sure we're ranked fifth in the AP poll, but fourth in the Playoff poll, which is all that matters now. Even so, I agree that UCLA should be ahead of us right now. Ultimately, it might not matter after this week's game, but the fact that the committee appears to like us more than other conference leaders (UCLA or anyone in the Big 12, for example), could be big if we find ourselves on the bubble in a few weeks.

The playoff race got a lot more fun for sure with all that went down last week; at least a dozen teams are still/back in it. Having played ahead, I already know who will appear in the playoff, but I can't wait until you all know as well. As fun as last week was, there are still lots of pieces to the puzzle that you have yet to see.

Also wanted to take a minute to note that Coach Coley has a huge game against Michigan State this week - won't advance you into the Big 10 title game with a win, but with the success the Knights have had, a win may finally help this be the year where Coley gets a head coach job. I'll be keeping my eye on it closely, good luck!

The game was a lot of fun! For a team as inconsistent as ours this year, a big win against a talented team goes a long way, and especially so now that we're back in the playoff race. We know we can hang with any team in the country, it's just a matter of putting it together the rest of the way, so fingers crossed.

He sure is pulling it together, reminds me of Luke Williamson, our starting back the previous three seasons for us. Thrust into the lineup as a redshirt freshman, he struggled early but got it together for consecutive 1,900 yard seasons before going pro last year.

With Swift, I expressed concern about the feature back spot next year with J.P. Byers' status up in the air and a lot of young kids needing to step up. A few weeks later, however, I feel a lot better about making Swift RB1 come opening day next fall if need be, which helps me feel better about the future. I don't need explosive, someone steady will do it, and that's exactly what Swift has been. He may just be the key to an unstoppable offense next year, as we'll return almost all of our starters. We shall see, though, that's a ways away still.

Thanks to all of you for your comments!

What a season. It's interesting to see which schools have taken nosedives into mediocrity. Bama, Auburn, Stanford. I also love that there's a huge field of two-loss teams after Ole Miss and Wisconsin. Quite a dramatic year.

Has a CAC player won the Heisman before? Wazzu's RB looks set for it to happen.

And SDSU might end up in the conference championship. Nice. *Eyes USC job* lol. Excited to see how this all turns out.

Barnett (Abdominal) Will Start Against Wake Forest

Unexpectedly and happily for UConn, senior corner Sam Barnett will be activated and appear in the starting lineup for UConn this afternoon against Wake Forest. Barnett has missed the last five games with an abdominal tear; he missed senior day last week. He had been shut down temporarily by Coach Stephen Belichick, but Barnett came to the staff this week with clearance to play again.

“Happy to be back!”, said Barnett to the Hartford Courant this week. While he is unlikely to go pro, Barnett wanted to do everything in his power to play the final games in his UConn career. “Hopefully we can take care of business this week and play a few more games”.

A Maine native, Barnett will look to turn around a disappointing senior season to date, having not recorded an interception in his six games this year.

Broadricke back in lineup at defensive tackle

The UConn defense has been running multiple looks on defense lately, but in the 3-4, fans have noticed Jeremy Broadricke playing ahead of freshman Tarik Madison. Madison had been put into the lineup over Broadricke at midseason, but the coaching staff reversed their decision this week and put the junior from Los Angeles back into the lineup.

Nose tackles have struggled mightily for UConn since T.J. Newell graduated three years ago, so consider this one last chance for Broadricke to prove himself as a viable option to start or be a sub defender. The former four-star recruit will be a fifth-year senior next fall and Coach Belichick has some young freshmen and incoming recruits who will push for time.

                    More Snow in the Forecast

I don’t know how much snow comes to Winston-Salem this time of year, but looks like some leftover snow from last week’s storm continues to soak the eastern seaboard on Thanksgiving weekend. Expect BB&T Field to be covered in snow for the UConn-Wake game. More fun in store for us!

Has a CAC player won the Heisman before? Wazzu's RB looks set for it to happen.

And SDSU might end up in the conference championship. Nice. *Eyes USC job* lol. Excited to see how this all turns out.
Don't forget LSU, Florida State, Georgia, even Ohio State - they won a Natty three years ago but have been bad since. Conversely, it's fun to see what teams have risen up from mediocrity. UCLA, Nebraska, BYU, Minnesota and Rutgers are all perennial entries into the Top 25. I guess that's one of the many joys of dynasty mode; I love in '14 how teams can become a power and just as quickly fade back - in other iterations, the same teams get good and stay good, while others get bad and stay bad. There's no parity. I love the drama - keeps things exciting for me and you readers as well.

Coach Shea had a Heisman winner at USC, running back Lamar Holycross in 2019. Certainly pulling for Tui to pull it out, and I think it's a two horse race between him and Tryson from OU. If Wazzu wins this week to get to the Pac-12 title game, Tui has a great shot because of their consistent running attack; Tui has been averaging about 185 yards/game. When he ran his Tulane dynasty, ksw prided himself on a very heavy rushing attack and it's finally paying off here. It's been so awesome to see how well he's turned around Wazzu, if only he were here to see it for himself!

Your Aztecs have been playing very well since losing starting QB Brannon Piello. Luckily, backup Bryce Horton is a senior and has lots of experience, so it's not too big a drop off. I just realized that I actually erred slightly, as if you and Hawai'i both win, I don't remember offhand who holds the head-to-head tiebreaker (I'd guess it's you). Nevertheless, whoever emerges has a tall task in playing 10-1 Air Force during champ week; they're unbeaten in conference play this year.

Keep hoping for the USC job... you just never know. I've got a post at a later date about Coach Shea. He's had a dreadful season and it just might continue after this week. Nice to see this though as it eliminates any concern about bias or malpractice in CAC handling!

I have a soft spot for Wake Forest...one of the first dynasties I ever did in NCAA! Demon Deacon, one of the coolest team names, it hooked me. I've tried to run one with Wake without doing a thread on here, but I just can't get into it for some reason. I wish NCAA had their gold alternate helmets they have these days.

Anyway...I digress. Don't let this game trap you. They may not have a great record, but its a fairly respectable roster. They have some weak spots on their O-Line to exploit for some sacks and to jam up the run game. Otherwise, they are fairly "middle of the road" everywhere else. I'd try for some mismatches against their linebackers with your tight ends, slot men, or even a back coming out on angles etc. They look like one of those opponents that isn't amazing anywhere, but well rounded enough to compete with anyone if their coach is on his game. Best of luck!

I've always had a soft spot for Wake as well, even though they're our "rivals" in the ACC for us BC fans. I ran with them in an online dynasty briefly and they were fun to use with the black unis and their nice stadium. I remember being very upset when they lost to FSU last year, but it's awesome that they've made a couple bowls in recent years IRL.

I agree with both of you that they are not spectacular in any way except for the backfield, but solid enough to make things interesting - they're a lot better than Louisville or Virginia. Though their defense looks good all around, they've only got one real impact player on defense in Miraldi, IMO. They are also very banged up. Getting Marcus Garrett back from injury will be huge for them as they can keep some very young and untalented guys off the field and help their chances in coverage (he's actually a safety filling in for James Robinson).

SB, you laid out a great gameplan. Garrett moving down could cause problems in the second level, but I think we'll keep with the same attack we have been implementing all year. Run with Swift, throw toward Devin Brown and Alex Paige in the slot as you mentioned, try to hit Byrom and Speier when we can on the outside. As long as Jordan looks sharp and our defense plays well again, I think we'll come out on top and move on to play for a CFP berth next week.

With this being Wake's senior day and with their coach on the hotseat, Wake has a lot to play for. Nevertheless, you can bet with his dedication to preparation, Coach Belichick will be the most likely person to have his team focused and ready to roll; a game next week is still not a given just yet, as we're out if we lose and Miami wins. I'm sure he'll convey to our guys that sense of urgency to take care of business and not rely on Miami to get us in.

Thanks as always everyone! I'll have the game up tomorrow!

                            (4) 28 --- 9-3 (7-2)

                            31 --- 4-8 (3-6)

                            "DISGUSTING"

UConn loses shot at CFP, falls out of ACC Title Game after getting outplayed by Wake Forest in the snow; Waters gashes UConn defense for 145 yards as Jordan Brown sacked twice in a row on final drive to seal upset

Wake Forest hurt UConn time and again on the ground. Chris Woodard (LEFT) scores on a QB keeper, while Anthony Waters (RIGHT) ran in a touchdown in addition to 145 yards.

Just as quickly as she came was just as quickly as she went.

UConn looked to be, somehow, in position to go into Charlotte for the ACC Title Game and have a de facto play-in game for the CFP in two weeks. Reasonably so, you all got excited. Cautiously excited, but excited nevertheless. I knew better, however. All year this UConn team has been inconsistent. They would crush a ranked team one week and then turn around to get crushed by a team with a sub-.500 record. As much as we all wanted to see a repeat, this UConn team simply is not good enough. It only took Wake Forest, of all teams, in the final week of the season, of all times, to expose that fact once and for all.

Wake came in at 3-8 with head coach Dave Clawson on the hot seat. Clawson showed why he may be deserving of another shot, as he put together a superb gameplan for UConn involving lots of blitzes and systematically picking apart the zone defense UConn has begun installing of late. More importantly, Clawson got his team more motivated than UConn, who was likely looking ahead to a Notre Dame rematch in two weeks. Led by running back Anthony Waters and his 145 yards on the ground, the Deacs pulled one of the more stunning upsets of the already wild college football season in a 31-28 instant classic.

In a game where Wake surprisingly outgained UConn by nearly 100 yards (462-377), UConn looked flat from the jump. Only one play went for over five yards in the entire first quarter, and they predictably scored no points. The only time they had good field position was after Marcus Rodgers returned a punt past midfield, and that was negated the very next play when Jordan Brown threw an interception to Ruben Stroughter.

On the other end, Wake came ready to play on their senior night. They converted three third downs en route to a Chris Woodard touchdown run from six yards out, and scored again on their very next possession, a four-yard touchdown run from Waters. Wake held a 14-0 lead after one quarter.

The script flipped in the second quarter, though, as UConn responded with three touchdowns. An Alex Brown interception of Woodard got the momentum swung in UConn’s favor, then Jordan Brown connected with Marcus Rodgers for a nine-yard touchdown pass to get on the board. Following a Wake three-and-out, UConn took advantage of good field position and tied up the game on a Jordan Brown touchdown scramble from nine yards out.

The teams traded touchdowns to close the half; Wake scored on Woodard’s first touchdown pass of the day, a beautifully thrown ball in the right side of the end zone from 16 yards out to Donovan Pangallo. The junior Pangallo appeared to fall on the slippery field, but made the catch anyway for a touchdown. On the other end, UConn punched in a one-yard run from star freshman Ashanti Swift. Swift could not make it 100 yards for the third straight game, but did look solid again, running for 95 yards on 22 touches plus the score.

You know you’re in trouble when everything breaks the other team’s way. Donovan Pangallo made a sensational sliding catch around Thorpe Award contender Kent Newton for a touchdown here.

In reality, a 21-21 tie at halftime was a welcome sight for UConn, considering how poorly they started the game. One could imagine that, just like Virginia or just like Louisville, UConn would have figure it out and have enough in the tank to pull away while Wake had used up everything too early.

But it didn’t work as expected this time.

Perhaps the writing was on the wall when Anthony Ricciardi missed another field goal, this time well within his range at 37 yards away. The miss puts the sophomore right at 50% for the season a continues a dreadful second half for the New Hampshire native, and even worse when we consider the field goal could have left the game tied at the end of regulation.

The trouble for UConn continued when a first down catch from Marcus Rodgers was brought back by a holding call on sophomore right guard Korey Davis-Love, and UConn was forced to punt a few plays later. Wake tallied a 39 yard field goal from Joey Hilliard shortly thereafter to retake the lead 24-21, and just when it looked as if UConn was about to at least tie the game up again, more disaster struck. Spelling Swift to get him ready for carries at the goalline, Mike Molden got stripped of the football by corner Cedric Berry in the red zone. Seconds later, Rashaad Gray recovered the fumble at the nine yard line to end UConn’s scoring threat.

Mike Molden’s second half fumble is one of the key moments UConn can look to as to why they lost.

Wake responded with a fourteen play, 91 yard touchdown drive capped off by a Waters run from four yards out. Multiple times UConn could have stopped the drive in its tracks, but were simply unable to. Waters broke off three runs of ten or more yards, while Devoreaux Monk broke a tackle at the sticks to push Wake into the red zone before Waters ran in his second score of the day from short. Wake suddenly held a 31-21 with time ticking away in the fourth quarter. In the past, UConn would have been able to overcome such a deficit. They have in exactly the same circumstances before.

This time, things were a little different. Molden pulled UConn within three after running in a touchdown on their next drive and, caught a break after Hilliard missed a 36 yard field goal wide right. But just like in the UCF and BC games, UConn couldn’t come through in money time. Trying to swing for the fences on a deep ball inside the final minute, Wake’s brilliant play was punctuated with two blitzes, and two sacks. Undersized defensive tackle Kyle Janich put UConn into 3rd and long while Daniel Ruffor finished off the Huskies on fourth down. As Jordan hit the ground that final time with Ruffor over top of him for the second time on the evening, UConn’s playoff and ACC title hopes came crashing down with it in an epic collapse.

As coach Clawson congratulated UConn on a great game, coach Stephen Belichick was off elsewhere in anger. “This loss is disgusting”, commented an obviously peeved Belichick. “We got too arrogant. We deserve what we get”. After simming through to champ week, UConn finished third in the ACC, meaning Miami jumped the Huskies after defeating NC State this week and the ‘Canes, not UConn, will face Notre Dame in Charlotte.

Where to place blame? Maybe on the offense. UConn couldn’t get the ball into the hands of their playmakers at wide receiver, with no one catching more than three passes and, notably, star sophomore Lonte’ Speier only made one catch, a week after making eleven. Jordan only completed 14 passes.

You could look to UConn’s pass defense, which once again looked weak despite adding Sam Barnett back into the lineup. Woodard finished with a sparkling 35 completions on 51 attempts for 294 yards and a score. Four receivers caught five or more passes, led by Devin Riley’s eleven catches. Anthony Waters led with 145 yards and two scores, including several runs late in the game to keep chains and clock moving, the ball out of UConn’s hands. Five Deacons defenders recorded sacks.

Blame, however, should not be placed in only one spot. It was a total and complete failure, which is why UConn will not repeat as national champions and sit home during the ACC Title Game, left to wonder what could have been.

The Deacs brought a great gameplan that included lots of pressure. It worked. Daniel Ruffor drags down Jordan Brown twice, including on a fourth down that ended UConn’s chances.

UConn scored a little, but couldn’t do enough in the end. Ashanti Swift continued his hot streak, while Marcus Rodgers caught another touchdown pass.
