I think I called it The Hive originally actually, way back in the original report from last summer. I'll pick a name before the season starts, probably end up using one of these, I haven't had any ideas.

Tough losing your best player, but it looks like you got a solid recruiting class! A decent chunk of 3 star guys there, especially with a lot of them coming in at the skill positions. Hopefully a few of them can even make an impact on Day 1, plus maybe one of your QBs will emerge from the pack with solid growth and can really take the reins this year.

I did my rolls for manual progression and I did get some favorable results. I also had some big reductions, but there's a couple guys that will really help us out. Thomas Green should be dynamic, but let's hope he can stay out of trouble. Really talented player, you'll see when I do the roster.

        Preciate you following bro.

2014 Westlake State Swarm Football Preview

HC: Dion Barkley (2-10, 2nd year)

          OC: Roger Bean (2nd year)

          DC: Michael Freeman (2nd year)

          2013 record: 2-10

          Roster

Wendell Hearn had an amazing offseason. Put on about 15 pounds, got more explosive, watched film, improved his arm. He looked good in spring ball, but can he lead this team. Remember, he was benched last season because of his attitude, Jeremy Ostrander wasn't much better on the field. Hearn could be the difference between another 2-10 year, and bowl eligibility.

Transfer Ricardo Marble is a great athlete, and will be a capable backup at the very least when he's eligible. We now have a backup that fits the offense. Daniel Cummings didn't work very hard, accuracy and awareness worsened. Doubt he'll ever see the field with Hearn still here for 2 years, and Marble behind him.

This group is pretty mediocre compared to what we had last year. Trent Brantley is probably the starter. He has a bit of power, and has good top end speed. But he doesn't really show anything unless he can get to the second level. Louis Dowdell isn't fast, strong, or super elusive.

Dionte Norton is supposedly this team's fastest player, but he doesn't evn show off his speed. All he does is run into guys, and he can't break a tackle for his life. He's fast and agile but lacks the wiggle to get that yard of daylight.

Tristan Cox and Darren Smith will both redshirt. Smith is someone I don't see ever contributing, Cox has some upside.

Nothing to say here. We don't even use a fullback.

Now this is an intriguing group. Stanley Wayne returns, he'll play in the slot again. Thomas Green is a JUCO transfer who is talented, and can break a game open, but he has temper issues. Had to go to JUCO after he beat up a student at his old high school. Calvin Foster will start over senior Brodie Norman. The 6'3 wideout has good speed, and pretty solid hands. He also has a 40 inch vertical.

Freshman Daniel Thompson is a big bodied wideout, another guy with solid athleticism. After him, the other guys will play sporadically. Kory Meadows was primed to see playing time but came into camp in bad shape.

Tight end is once again a thin position. Only guy we recruited was T.J Thomas, but he'll just be long snapping. Expect a lot of 4 wide sets.

The line looks pretty solid. Guy Olsen and freshman Joe Edwards worked their butts off all summer, and it shows. They'll start on either side of the line. The weak spot is probably center Jovon Crowell. He's only 284, and not in great shape, he gives up a lot of pressure up the gut. Transfer Chris Beech will help us a lot there next season.

As of right now, Raishuan Swan has outperformed Reggie Blanco. He'll start at left end. Right end will be held down by Jamal Mangum, who hopes to build on his 4 sack season from a year ago.

Derron Swan and Jerrell Cutler worked out together all summer, and got a lot stronger and better conditioned. For now, Santonio Valentine will be relegated to a rotational role. Justin Miles progressed as expected, but Gerard Britton, who started last year, is 30 pounds heavier and looks like a snail out there.

Sergio Keith moves inside, as Arnold Godfrey improved a lot. Korey Townes should be valuable for us once again. This is an athletic group, with some young backups who could grow into good players.

Note: ROLB Brian Mooney's awareness and acceleration are switched, made a mistake.

Corner is very shaky. Our best corner, Isaac Robinson, is a guy who will almost certainly be our starting free safety next year, as he's just a touch too slow to be a 5'11 corner. Darnell Woods does better, he has a quicker first step, but we will definitely avoid man coverage this season. Abdul Coles is a hard hitter, decent in coverage, but not the athlete you need a 5'9 corner to be. He gets killed in press because he's just too small and lacks length.

Safety is our best position group, on offense or defense. Donte Oliver can do whatever you need. If he can stop dropping picks, he'll be a game changer. Transfer Khari Anderson will compete with Isaac Robinson for the free safety job next season. Terrance Owens was promising as a true freshman, but all he did all summer was hit the weight room. Got more athletic, but his skills waned. He'll redshirt.

Deonte Abrams is our most dynamic player on defense. Can blow up plays, he's an elite athlete.

Grant Marquardt and Leslie Motley both improved. Solid special teamers.

          2014 Schedule

We have a really weird schedule. Bye in week 1, then we play every week until week 14. Byes in week 14 and 15. Our non-conference games look pretty tough, with 3 solid teams, and then preseason #11 Kansas State on the road. Bill Snyder and the Wildcats are consistently a good team by P5 standards.

In our first year in the MAC, we're pretty easily the weakest team in the conference on paper. I think we have a good shot at beating Akron and UMass at home.

          General Thoughts

The offense will make or break the season in my opinion. Our defense was bottom 5 in the country last season, and while I don't think it'll be as bad, we haven't really addressed any weaknesses. Our corner situation is bad, we're gonna get burnt if we play man. Our front 7 is mediocre on a good day, only real positive players are our safety tandem, but they're both seniors.

Hearn is the bright spot, but man he doesn't have much help lol. I think Brantley could be a breakaway guy with his speed though, I like him. He could wind up earning the starting spot. At receiver, Green could be the best bet with his speed but Wayne should be the most reliable.

Defensively, the backers aren't a bad group. The safeties are good and have a ton of closing speed, so that's a bright spot too.

              Training camp Newsflash

Hearn impresses -- Who's Hot, Who's Not -- Injuries -- 2 players ruled academically ineligible

              New year, new Wendell?

Wendell Hearn was probably the worst starting quarterback in the entirety of the FBS last year. He was under 45% completions, and threw for under 120 yards a start. He also had twice as many interceptions as he did passing touchdowns. His problems continued off the field, as he clashed with several teammates after losses, eventually losing his starting spot to the better liked Jeremy Ostrander.

Then I get here, I'm built like a DB, I wasn't ready physically or mentally to play D1 football. So after the season I just got to working, put on weight, put some time in on the field, in the film room, and y'all will see the results this year.
Hearn isn't exaggerating. He looks like a whole new player so far. He's noticeably bigger, faster, and mentally sharper. He makes reads and throws that he couldn't make last year. He's had an attitude shift. While last year, he blamed others and sulked when mistakes were made, this year, mistakes seem to motivate him.

Hearn's hard work has also transferred over to his other sport: baseball. Hearn was a light-hitting centerfielder with a good glove last year. This baseball season, he batted over .400 and had 21 home runs, plus 19 stolen bases in just 52 games. His breakout year saw him appear on the MLB draft radar, and he likely would have been drafted this year had he not expressly stated that he wants to play at least one more year of football.

              Who's Hot, Who's Not

Hot: Wendell Hearn. He's looked like he can be a good quarterback in the MAC, shredding this defense all throughout camp.

Not: CB Isaac Robinson. The 3 star corner received high praise from head coach Dion Barkley when he signed here. But he's been getting picked on in man coverage for weeks now, with Calvin Foster and Thomas Green blowing past him and racking up big gain after big gain. It's worrying, because while Green is a pretty good deep threat, Foster is a 4.5 guy at best. What'll happen when we face guys with elite speed?

Hot: RT Joe Edwards. The 6'2. 322 pound freshman has looked excellent, seldom allowing a sack. He should be an anchor for this line over the next 4 years.

Not: Tailback Dionte Norton. The speedy back was in line to split carries with Trent Brantley this year. But Norton can't seem to find a crease, and has developed a fumble problem.

Hot: WR Calvin Foster. Foster came into camp #4 on the depth chart. Now, he's the #2. He's shown better speed than we expected, and a great ability to snatch the ball out of the air, especially in the red zone.

Deonte Abrams got Mossed on this one

Not: DT Santonio Valentine. Valentine led the team in sacks last year, but was surpassed over the offseason by both Jerell Cutler and Derron Swan. He still held the #3 spot on the depth chart, but failed a course in the spring semester and won't be eligible to play this season until bowl season rolls around, provided he has his required credits.

              Injuries/suspensions

HB Trent Brantley - 4 weeks, Achilles strain

RE Malcolm Roberts - 6 weeks, dislocated ankle

LT Dane Chavez and DT Santonio Valentine were ruled academically ineligible and will not play football this season. Should they not complete their required credits this semester, they'll be kicked off the team.

Hearn improved a ton, let's hope he can be a leader this year. I like Brantley too, sucks he got injured in camp. Redshirt freshman tho...

Green is talented as hell but character questions, reason he was a JUCO. Wayne wasn't that great in camp to me, Foster and Green were our best guys, but I think Wayne should be the most consistent.

Thanks for following, gonna get the year kicked off right now.

I've always created these little backstories for players in my head, so now I just put them in the report. They will come into play for sure. Also really helps me immerse when I create a story that attaches me to a player. Like Hearn in my mind had a bad year, but worked his butt off and is trying to redeem himself, so now I'm pulling for him.

If you start losing interest in your Sonoma dynasty cause your team is too good (I love following powerhouse teams, but I know it can get boring actually using them), pick some guys and give them a backstory. Or, something I plan on doing if I ever have a crazy juggernaut Swarm team for too long, give yourself some heavy sanctions and make up a recruiting/NCAA rules scandal.

Whole reason I do this is to share my dynasty universe. Wait till I slow the pace way down when we're a better team in a better conference. Gonna gradually get to previewing every game, breaking it down, weekly wrap ups etc. I like storylines more than the actual games tbh.

If I get the editor going... I could do some crazy stuff there with grad transfers, forcing unsigned recruits to commit places, all types of stuff really.

I plan to go more in depth myself. With my injury, I've had so much free time and its more fun to play the games. I expect to be cleared by my doc this week and back to work next week, so at that point it will slow down to 1 game a week. So basically I've figured I'll get through this season (2022) before I pump the brakes lol. With that, I can put in more recruiting updates and stories from outside the game. It should be fun.

As far as the editor, I know we can change uniforms. Last I read, there's not nearly as much you can edit into a teambuilder dynasty compared to a normal one, so I'd say don't get the hopes too high. I'm usually wrong though lol, and I haven't read into the editor much as my main thing is just wanting new uniforms.

Westlake, OH -- Westlake State opened their 2014 campaign today, the program's second at the FBS level. The game against FIU also marked the first game in "The Hive", the name the Swarm faithful have quickly given Westlake Stadium. Sadly, the fans will have to wait a while for that first home win, as the Swarm fell 26-15 to the Florida International Panthers.

This game started really poorly for both offenses. Westlake State would punt to open the game, and FIU would punt it right back. Then the Swarm saw a promising drive stall around midfield, and punted again.

FIU got all the way to the Swarm 5, before QB Maurice Alexander missed an open man in the back of the endzone, and tailback Shawndarius Phillips was stuffed twice, setting up a short kick. But Jose Borregales missed the chip shot, giving the ball back to Westlake State. They couldn't do anything with it, and FIU went on a solid drive, but Borregales missed again, this time from 37 yards.

A couple more slow drives ending in punts saw FIU with the ball, and halftime nearing. They were finally able to score, with a good punt return setting up a short field. Despite that, the offense had to settle once again. This time, Borregales made no mistake, putting a 34 yard kick right down the middle.

Westlake State tried to make something happen, with about 90 seconds and 3 timeouts left. Thomas Green got out to the 40 on the kick return, and the Swarm tried to make something happen, with about 90 seconds and all 3 timeouts remaining. Wendell Hearn fired a strike to Green, the speedy wideout's first catch of the game, before trying to fit a touch pass in between 3 FIU defenders. He underthrew it, and it was picked by Richard Dames. FIU put together a 42 yard drive in the 53 seconds they had left, and kicked another field goal as time expired to put them up 6-0 heading into the half.

But this one was far from over. Westlake State forced a punt, and Hearn led a good drive that ended in a 5 yard score from Louis Dowdell. Advantage, Westlake. But FIU came straight back, and tailback Napoleon Maxwell capped a long drive with a 1 yard TD run. FIU went for 2 to try to go up by 7, but failed.

Westlake State went down the field and scored again, with a drive sparked by Hearn beating the blitz on a 3rd and 12, finding Louis Dowdell on an open checkdown. Dowdell saw green ahead, and ended up getting 30 yards. Another 3rd and long, this time from the FIU 41, and Hearn found Stanley Wayne up the seam for another 30 yards, with Wayne making an impressive contested grab. Dowdell finished the drive 2 plays later, running it in from 6 yards out.

Stanley Wayne makes a tough grab

Those proved to be the last points Westlake State would score. After Dowdell's second TD, FIU moved right down the field, and the drive culminated in a Zach Armour catch in the endzone, 4 seconds into the final quarter.

FIU were up 4 points, and this next drive was crucial. It started well, with a couple first downs courtesy of Hearn and Dowdell running well. Then, an incompletion, followed by Dionte Norton getting stuffed on a stretch saw the Swarm facing a 3rd and 10. Hearn found a wide open Calvin Foster... and he dropped it. Punt.

FIU had all the momentum, and were storming down the field until an overconfident deep shot was picked off by freshman corner Isaac Robinson. Robinson tried to return it with space ahead, but was tripped up and unfortunately judged down at the 1.

                            Isaac Robinson's first career pick

Not to worry, as Hearn found Thomas Green on a crossing route after a play-fake for 25 yards. Hearn then picked up a first down himself, running for 14 yards. Feeling confident, he took a shot downfield to Green on the next play. It was slightly underthrown, but dropped by the defender, falling right in front of Green, but the sophomore wideout couldn't hang on. Next play saw Hearn get sacked, setting up a 3rd and 18.

That drop proved costly, as with time running down, facing 3rd and forever, Hearn tried to do it all for his team. Another ill-advised throw over the middle was picked off, this time by Olin Cushion III, and that did it.

The Swarm had to burn timeouts, and after Phillips found a crease and ran for a 24 yard score with 1:32 left, had no options but to try to make a play through the air. Hearn couldn't find anyone, completing none of the 8 passes he attempted on the final drive.

Despite a rough 12/27, 2 INT statline, head coach Dion Barkley was proud of Hearn.

He can do things that other guys on the roster can't, athletically. Him finding guy for 25, 30 yard plays 2 or 3 times today really impressed me, I can count on one hand our big passing plays last year.

The one thing I'll say is that he's gone too far into pocket mode. But, I was on him last year about running too much so that's kind of on me. Imma let him know he has the green light from now on for sure.
Westlake State will go to Idaho and play 0-1 Boise State on the blue turf in week 3.

Really tough to allow them to take the 4th quarter like that. It's hard to be put in passing situations late with so few targets to go with. It will be rough next week too with Boise State, but hopefully the Swarm can keep making strides.

Swarm take defensive battle on the Blue Turf

Swarm hold Broncos to 34 passing yards -- Norton the X factor, boosts Swarm -- Thomas Green knocked out, will miss 1-2 weeks

Grant Marquardt scores the game's only points

Boise, ID -- When you see a 3-0 scoreline, you might think it's a dominating win by Manchester City in the Premier League, or a gem from Clayton Kershaw. But this was an FBS football game, and what a game it was. Wendell Hearn threw for just 92 yards, but controlled the game and came up big when he needed to. Dionte Norton came off of a 6 yard game to post 64 yards, and very nearly break away for a long score.

The Jaylon Henderson-led Broncos looked strong on their opening drive. They moved down the field slowly, getting to about the 35 yard line before Henderson decided to take a shot into the endzone. Swarm corner Isaac Robinson was there, and it was an easy pick, Robinson's second in as many games.

Then it was Westlake's turn, with the ball at their own 22 after a good return from Robinson. Wendell Hearn completed his first throw on the day to Thomas Green, who caught it on a curl route. He turned and was immediately rocked by a Boise defender, going out cold. He left on a stretcher, and will miss at least next week with a concussion.

But the drive continued. Louis Dowdell and Wendell Hearn had some good gains on the ground, and after a Calvin Foster catch for 8 yards at the Boise 29, the Swarm looked primed to take the lead in this game. But Westlake State tried to get cute, faking a handoff to try to go deep, and Hearn was sacked for a loss of 11 yards. Now out of field goal range, Hearn made a good throw on 3rd and 13 to an open Daniel Thompson, but it was dropped by the freshman. Punt.

The second quarter was more of the same, with Boise State and Westlake State exchanging a few punts to take it to the half. The Swarm would receive to start the 2nd half, and Dionte Norton started to do some work, gaining 14 on a stretch, before exploding for 25 yards 2 plays later, missing out on a score due to a crucial shoestring tackle.

                                So close to breaking it

That drive would stall, but nevertheless, Westlake State were lined up for a 36 yard field goal. Gimme for an FBS kicker, right? Well, Grant Marquardt missed it. The Broncos started moving down the field, and broke off a good gain on a Jaylon Henderson keeper, but he was stripped by Sergio Keith and the fumble was picked up by freshman end Raishaun Swan, who got all the way to the Boise 28.

The Swarm couldn't make anything happen, gaining just 7 yards on 3 plays, but that set up another fairly short kick for Marquardt, and he missed another one.

That took us to the 4th quarter. Boise State had been bad against a team that they were expected to beat, but could still pull it out, and had all the momentum in the world. Tailback Alex Mattison started gashing the Swarm defense, gaining 42 yards on 6 consecutive carries before exiting the game.

Mattison was good all day, 23 carries for 103 yards

After backup Pat Tyler couldn't get anything on 1st down from the Swarm 37, Boise State dialled up a shot play. The play fake worked brilliantly, and wideout Khalil Shakir was open deep, no one within 10 feet of him. But Henderson saw it a fraction of a second late, and free safety Donte Oliver came over, deflecting the ball at the last second. (I couldn't get a picture of this, game didn't have the replay available at the end, was an incredible play)

3rd and 10. 10 yards seemed like an eternity to have to get via the air in this one, but some more shoddy coverage saw a man open, wideout Akilan Butler. Henderson saw him near the sideline, pass on the money, no one around... and it bounces off his hands. 4th down, and the Swarm survive.

After the punt, Westlake State knew they could likely kill the clock and win it as time expired if they played their cards right. That's exactly what happened.

The run game took control, with 3 rushes gaining the Swarm 18 yards to start the drive. Then Hearn found his guy Calvin Foster for 11 yards. At their own 49, Hearn then found Stanley Wayne for 15 yards.

Then Boise woke up a bit on defense. They stopped Louis Dowdell after just 2 yards, then sacked Hearn to force a 3rd and long. Hearn dropped back, stepped up in the pocket to avoid the rush, and fired to senior receiver Brodie Norman for 13 yards and the first, Norman's only catch on the day.

After that, another run from Norton and a scramble from Hearn put the Swarm firmly into field goal range with under a minute left. Boise State burned their timeouts to no avail, as the Swarm got a first down, centered the ball and Marquardt made no mistake from 29 yards.

There was one second left, but there would be no miracle in Boise. The Swarm took the game 3-0, for their first win on the season.

Wendell Hearn thinks that this win will serve as a catalyst for the Swarm's 2014 campaign.
