    Leonsis takes control of Wizards

    Leonsis takes control of Wizards

    June 7th, 2002 | by NBA.COM

WASHINGTON -- Ted Leonsis received 130 e-mails from Washington Wizards fans before he had owned the team a full day. Three came from a fan concerned about the quality of the ketchup at the Verizon Center.

Yes, owning two major sports teams is going to take a lot of work.

"I hoping I'm not going to get 130 e-mails a day for both teams," said Leonsis, who opened an e-mail address for fans and is going to try to answer them all.

The 53-year-old former AOL executive stood at a podium Thursday to announce that he has formally taken control of a major sports and entertainment empire. The NBA gave its approval Tuesday, and the papers were signed Wednesday to complete the purchase of the Wizards, the Verizon Center and other assets from the estate of the late Abe Pollin.

Leonsis already owned the NHL's Washington Capitals and WBNA's Washington Mystics and 44 percent of the Wizards and Verizon Center. His group paid about $310 million for the other 56 percent to create a new entity -- called Monumental Sports & Entertainment -- whose total value is more than $825 million.

The focus, however, was solely on the man at the top. Despite his lofty position, Leonsis is not an entourage man. He walked to the microphone with no introduction and spoke for some 52 minutes, answering a wide range of questions. The contrast with the city's other major sports owners -- the media-shy duo of Dan Snyder (Redskins) and Ted Lerner (Nationals) -- couldn't have been more striking.

The immediate concern for both Wizards and Capitals fans is whether Leonsis can find enough time to devote his full energies to both teams as well as all of his other interests.

"I believe I have the personal bandwidth and the experience to be able to manage all of these assets," Leonsis said. "Yes, I do worry about it. ... I'm going to stop doing some of those [other] things and put my focus on the teams. There's only so many hours in the day."

The Wizards had a bounce back season this year led by Michael Jordan as they reached the Eastern Conference finals. The core of a good group is there already to build on. "We have a very important offseason and are already doing our due diligence on all possibilities. We can make that jump next season. We have a good mix in our roster, but we will look to add some more youth and sustain the long term viability of the franchise." said Leonsis.

Leonsis reiterated that he plans to retain general manager Wes Unseld and coach Doug Collins. He said he is now exchanging e-mails with Michael Jordan his President of Basketball Operations and star player.

"It's very important that Michael is involved in the process this summer. He has been a fantastic addition as a player," Leonsis said. "Michael knows the most important thing for him to do is to stay in shape, to be a great teammate and to be a pillar of our community."

Leonsis indicated he'd like to revive the franchise's old red-based color scheme, which would mirror a similarly popular change he made with the Capitals. But he added "there will be no name change" despite a widespread sentiment that the Wizards should go back to their old nickname, the Bullets.

"I'm shocked with all that we have to do that that's been, like, the No. 1 question, e-mail, message board conversation," Leonsis said.

      Wizards hire Ernie Grunfeld

Wizards hire new President of Basketball Operations.

      June 16th, 2002 | by NBA.COM

Monumental Sports & Entertainment owner Ted Leonsis announced today that Ernie Grunfeld has been hired as President of Basketball Operations for the Washington Wizards, effectively replacing Michael Jordan. Per policy, terms were not enclosed.

“We are so excited that Ernie will be joining us in the Wizards organization. He has a brilliant basketball mind and will bring so much to our team,” said Leonsis. “He is a proven winner and I look forward to great things from him. Hiring Ernie will also allow Michael to fully concentrate on his final season in the league and help in our quest to bring a title to Washington.”

“I am very pleased to be joining the Wizards. This is going to be an exciting challenge and with the caliber of talent on the Wizards’ team, this makes this an ideal situation,” said Grunfeld.

Prior to joining the Wizards, Grunfeld spent the previous three seasons as general manager of the Milwaukee Bucks, where the team’s 14 playoff wins during his tenure exceeded the team’s cumulative total in the 12 seasons prior to his arrival. In three seasons with Milwaukee, the Bucks posted a record of 177-151 (.540) and never finished below .500 while making the playoffs three times. Grunfeld was named general manager of the Bucks on August 13, 1999 after 17 seasons with Knicks.

During Grunfeld’s reign as the Knicks top personnel executive, New York advanced to at least the Conference Semifinals of the NBA Playoffs each season. His tenure included five 50-plus win seasons, three Atlantic Division Championships and two trips to the NBA Finals in 1994 and 1999. In eight seasons as general manager or vice-president of player personnel, his Knicks teams had a record of 397-227 (.636) and a 61-44 record in the playoffs.

With the recent major changes in the Wizards franchise, this is perhaps the most surprising one of all. What happened to Michael Jordan? Jordan was the President of Basketball Operations, technically, he relinquished that role when he returned as a player, but no official announcement was made. Jordan has also been rumored to have made a bid to outright purchase the Wizards in the past weeks. Leonsis and his group were always going to take over, but maybe Jordan has thrown a spanner in the works behind closed doors.

It's been long rumored Jordan wants full control of a franchise from top to bottom. When he was in negotiations with George Shinn to buy shares in the Hornets in 1999, he eventually called off negotiations as he wouldn't be given full control of basketball operations. Now the arrangement seemed to be that Jordan gave GM Wes Unseld his instructions, and Unseld carried them out. The chain of command seems to be broken now, with Grunfeld being hired as the new President. This offseason is about to become a whole lot more interesting.

Will Jordan opt out of contract?

Will Jordan opt out of final contract year?

        June 25th, 2002 | by NBA.COM

Michael Jordan, who gave the Washington Wizards a fantastic year of sell-out crowds while on the court, will not return to the front office, his agent David Falk said in a statement. Jordan constructed the majority of the roster which led to the Wizards clinching a #1 seed in the East and the Wizards also reached the Eastern Conference Finals. Ernie Grunfeld has been hired as the new President of Basketball Operations, essentially replacing Jordan.

The Wednesday announcement came after a week of speculation about his future with the team and followed several meetings between Jordan and the new majority owner Ted Leonsis.

"I firmly believe that Michael's time with us as a player will have a lasting impact on every player on our roster and there is no question that our fans have been treated to a very unique season," said Leonsis in a statement. "In my evaluations this season, I feel that this franchise needed to move in a different direction. By allowing Michael to concentrate on solely being a player, he will be able to maximize the effect of his last full playing season. We fully value and appreciate his worth to us as a franchise leader and All Star player. Ernie and I will look to surround him with even more talent this offseason to push for the NBA Finals."

There is speculation that Jordan tried to buy a controlling stake of the Wizards franchise through various groups, but Leonsis' group was always in the driving seat for that sale. It may have irked Leonsis that Jordan tried to force him out. It's widely known that Jordan wants to own an NBA franchise and have full control over basketball operations, but this opportunity is fading fast now in Washington.

Jordan could now look to buy into the Charlotte expansion franchise, which is open for bidding this summer. BET Entertainment owner Robert Johnson is the favorite, and is a friend of Jordan's. Jordan could buy part of that franchise which may begin play in the 2003-04 season if all goes to plan. Jordan will be retired by then, and can assume front office duties full time again.

Jordan has to do some soul searching now, as he figures out how to finish off his playing career. The Wizards desperately need Jordan the player, but not Jordan the executive. But can they have one without the other? Jordan has a special opt out option in his contract for this season. He must decide by July 1st if he is opting in or out.

Seattle number one?! Heck yeah, Sonics get Yao! He'd be a great fit in the Pacific Northwest, a thriving Asian American community in that area of the country, would almost guarantee Seattle not moving.

As for Jordan, I'd love to see him leave the Wizards and end up on a contender somewhere else who could use his particular talents. Perhaps a young contender like the Mavs or T'Wolves? Or a veteran squad looking for one last shot at glory like the Pacers? Lots of options.
            Any comments are welcome.

Yep it could be the saving grace for the Sonics! Stoudamire and Yao will get to it next season, with any luck Mo Pete and Desmond Mason continue to develop alongside them too.

Jordan opts out of final year of contract.

Jordan opts out of contract, becomes free agent.

                June 26th, 2002 | by NBA.COM

On the morning of the NBA Draft, the talk is not about Yao Ming or Jay Williams going #1. It’s about a 39 year old Michael Jordan opting out of his Washington Wizards contract and becoming an unrestricted free agent. The news, first reported by ESPN.com's Bill Simmons, means Jordan, a five-time NBA MVP, can sign with any team for next season.

This is what a lot of insiders said would happen as soon as Ernie Grunfeld was hired as the new President of Basketball Operations in Washington. It now gives Jordan the freedom to go wherever he wants this summer. It shouldn't, however, be viewed as proof that he will leave the Wizards.

Jordan’s primary concern is not money -- he opted out of his $1 million contract for next season. Jordan has made it known to team's he will sign for the minimum contract again next year and donate it to the 9/11 survivors fund. Having proven to the NBA that he can still lead a team, his only concern is winning, and further adding to his legacy.

So if the Wizards don’t make the right moves this off-season, what other teams could Jordan now be looking at? While Jordan opting out of his contract doesn't eliminate the Wizards, it does lower their chances significantly, as he would have just opted in if he was happy to stay with the status quo.

Along with the Wizards, some of Jordan's main options appear to be the Minnesota Timberwolves or the Dallas Mavericks. Those are two of the teams he was linked to who look like contenders with the addition of Jordan. At this point, however, all the buzz is pointing to Sacramento, and it seems the decision may come down to whether Jordan wants to remain with the Wizards or join the Kings, who lost in 7 games in the Western Conference Finals.

Adding to the intrigue, is the fact that the Wizards are going hard in the pursuit of other stars in order to entice Jordan to keep his talents in DC. Both Chauncey Billups and Matt Harpring have been linked to the Wizards, but according to reports earlier this week, Jordan is "hesitant" to commit to the Wizards as he is not calling the shots, and he knows what the Wizards need. He will wait to see if Grunfeld heed's his recommendations.

Of course, those players may not want to go Washington now without Jordan there, which leaves things in a bit of a stalemate. There are probably only a few people on earth who actually have a solid understanding of what's going to happen in the next week or so, but one thing that's clear to everyone is this summer's free agency period is going to be thrilling. Jordan is expected to host several teams next week as each franchise will get an opportunity to court Jordan for his final season. When we get a hold of that list, you'll be the first to now. DA.

Lot of work in this draft guys. Offseason in a retro myleague is a heck of a challenge, most of the trades and draft picks I have put some research into. Good draft sets up free agency so its vital I get it right. Good news is I have 6 trades, and 50 draft picks settled on, so almost there. Stay tuned. Will try and post by tomoro night.

Take your time, it's all good. I'm eager to see where things go, where Jordan goes, and what the potential ramifications are of the draft on free agency.

                      NBA Draft 2002

Sonics select Yao Ming with #1 Pick.

                      June 26th, 2002 | by NBA.COM

                      2002 NBA Draft.

                      Round 1.

                      Round 2.

                      Trades during the Draft.

Seattle Sonics Trade Vin Baker to the Boston Celtics for Eric Williams, Vitaly Potapenko, 2002 #22 Pick.

Seattle - The Sonics are trying to clear up some cap space with this move and try to build around new franchise center Yao Ming. They will now look to start Keon Clark at the 4, and Yao at the 5 next season, forming a promising young front court. The Sonics oldest player is now Damon Stoudemire at age 27.

Boston - The Celtics are looking to solidfy their front court after last seasons mauling in the finals against Shaq. They didn't give up much, but they have taken on a lot of salary for Baker, who could help them return to the finals again next year.

New York Knicks trade Donyell Marshall and 2002 #2 Pick to the Chicago Bulls for Ron Artest and 2002 #7 Pick.

New York - The Knicks need talent, and a point guard in particular, so I'm amazed they passed on picking Jay Williams who could solve a lot of their problems. Chicago are happy to move on from Artest who has been a wild child behind the scenes. The Knicks also traded back and grabbed a high schooler in Amare Stoudemire who could be a real sleeper in this draft. Most importantly the Knicks got younger without taking on massive salary again.

Chicago - The Bulls got who they wanted in Jay Willams. Every orchestra needs a conductor, and the young Bulls have found a good one in Williams. They move Artest who has been causing chemistry issues, and get a chance to set the tone the right way now with Williams in the fold.

Washington Wizards Trade Rip Hamilton and Etan Thomas to the Detroit Pistons for Jerry Stackhouse.

Washington - The Wizards wanted a more seasoned pro, and a consistent 24ppg scorer. Hamilton was inconsistent, he had as many 25-30 point games as he did 5-10 points. The Wizards needed more reliable scoring as Jordan could take a big step back this season aged 40. Its a major gamble to give up on the promising Hamilton, but acquiring a UNC alum in Stackhouse sounds like exactly what Jordan asked Ernie Grunfeld to do.

Detroit - The Pistons are going nowhere so moving Stackhouse was the right call. Hamilton will be the main focus on offense, and could develop very nicely if the Pistons grab a point guard this summer. Really underrated trade, and the Wizards could regret it long term.

Cleveland Cavaliers Trade Andre Miller to the Los Angeles Clippers for Darius Miles.

Cleveland - The Cavs haven't had a successful season in a while and have decided to move on from one of their franchise cornerstones. They have their new point guard in Dajuan Wagner, although they tried to move up for Jay Williams. Wagner will have fun running the point with Ricky Davis and Darius Miles either side of him. Expect plenty of lobs.

LA Clippers - The Clippers have struggled these past few seasons but now they have a solid core with Miller, Odom and Elton Brand, who they expect to resign this summer. They gave up on one of their many wing players and bring in a steady experienced point guard in Miller, whom they hope will transform them in to a relevant team.

Philadelphia 76ers Trade Dikembe Mutombo to the New Jersey Nets for Keith Van Horn and Todd MacCulloch.

Philadelphia - The 76ers had a disastrous campaign last season, and missed out on the playoffs. With a superstar like Iverson thats not acceptable. Mutombo may still be an elite defender, but he just couldn't put the ball in the basket. Van Horn certainly can, and will give the 76ers some more size on the perimeter. MacCulloch is a capable starter at center. Grabbing Maybner 'Nene' Hilario was also a solid pick, and the 76ers should have a much stronger frontcourt this season.

New Jersey - The Nets got ousted by Jordan and the Wizards in the second round, and partly down to the lack of defense in the post to stop Laettner and Patrick Ewing. Mutombo addresses that need now and will form an elite frontcourt with Kenyon Martin. Losing Van Horn is a risk, and the Nets will need to bring in some more scoring this summer to offset his loss.
                      .

                        Jordan recruiting begins.

Michael Jordan recruiting visits begin: Portland Trailblazers, New York Knicks make pitches in Hay-Adams Hotel.

                        July 1st, 2002 | by NBA.COM

Washington, DC -- The recruitment of Michael Jordan has begun and it is as much of a circus as expected.

The Portland Trailblazers, led by billionaire owner Paul Allen, were the first to meet with Jordan on the first day of free agency. Allen arrived with Jordan's former teammate Scottie Pippen, former foe Gary Payton and Head Coach Mo Cheeks at the Hay-Adams Hotel in downtown Washington shortly after 11 a.m. on Thursday morning.

They brought a rack full of luggage and computer equipment for their presentation to Jordan. A little less than two hours later the Trailblazers group left with smiles.

"It went well," Payton told The Washington Post, briefly showing a specially-made folder with Jordan's face above a Blazers' logo.

"I would like to comment but I cannot," Allen said, remarking that he thought it was funny that he heard his plane had landed on the radio on his drive into downtown from the airport.

As the Blazers left, they were literally passed by the New York Knicks' on the way out the door. The Knicks were represented by owner James Dolan, president Scott Layden, several executives, star player Allan Houston and recently acquired Ron Artest. About an hour before their arrival, an advance team came to the building with their own luggage and computer equipment for their proposal.

Jordan, the free agent himself, arrived in his black Ferrari a few minutes before 11 a.m. wearing a white shirt, grey suit and flanked by security he headed up to the hotel. He declined to comment to The Washington Post.

The Blazers and Knicks were the only teams scheduled to meet with Jordan Thursday, sources said.

The process is expected to be repeated on Friday, Saturday and Sunday as Jordan hosts five more teams.

According to a source, he is expected to be visited by the Sacramento Kings
on Friday morning, followed by a presentation by the Toronto Raptors in the afternoon. The Minnesota Timberwolves are believed to be scheduled to pitch Jordan on Saturday morning with the Los Angeles Lakers following up on Saturday Afternoon. The Lakers will have a strong contingent with Jordan's former Coach Phil Jackson, superstar Kobe Bryant and the Larry O' Brien trophy carried by Dr Jerry Buss. That will make quite the impression on Jordan who is very interested in competing for a championship this season.

Then, potentially as the last team to present, the Wizards are expected to meet with Jordan on Sunday Morning. Head coach Doug Collins and recently acquired Jerry Stackhouse are expected to be part of that meeting. Christian Laettner and Chris Whitney are also expected to be present.

As the parties arrived at the hotel, they were greeted by a large banner that was hung on a hotel across the street that read "HOME" along with a Wizards logo. It is part of a marketing campaign throughout the city launched this week with various banners and billboards targeting Jordan and playing to his sense of home and community. The people of Washington have really embraced Jordan this past season.

Numerous Wizards employees held up signs of the same nature outside the building and waved them to passing cars, with drivers honking horns.

There were several dozen reporters and photographers camped outside the hotel to capture the events and workers on their lunch break stopped by to take in the scene.

Man, that draft was fun. Great to see Yao in Seattle, that should (hopefully) keep the team there.

Interesting to see Stackhouse still land with the Wizards ... Jordan would approve of that.

Love this recruitment that's going on with him. The Blazers and the Lakers are going to be the leaders in the clubhouse I think; Portland for the veteran talent that Jordan knows and respects, LA for Jackson and Kobe ... I think MJ would like to prove he could win in the West, even at his advanced age. He likes a challenge.

Yep it was really enjoyable to do it. Feel like I'm reliving the early 2000s now with the draft and free agency rumors!

Lots of very good options for Jordan. I've set it up so a few teams have made really good moves to entice Jordan..Free agency next then I'll reveal who Jordan picks...He does like a challenge alright...
