Gm. 14, Yr. 17 Preview (2026 season): #21 Tulane Green Wave vs. #20 Ohio St. Buckeyes

    GAME 14 PREVIEW

Latest Line (courtesy Bovada - Las Vegas):

    ....................2 1/2....................

2026: Tulane true freshman PK Blake Dunn had ice cold veins, drilling this 32-yard game-winner, giving the Green Wave the lead as time expired and a huge opening week victory.

Last Meeting I: Earlier this year at "The Shoe," then-#9 Tulane overcame a 10-point second half deficit en route to a heart-pounding 27-24 victory over Ohio St. on both teams' opening day. RB Anthony Brown's 24-yard touchdown run tied the game up at 24-24 with 1:30 to go. Then, as the end of regulation drew near, QB Jimmy McBride connected with freshman WR Steve Mosley for two long passes to set up freshman PK Blake Dunn's game-winning 32-yard walk-off field goal, giving the Wave a victory in their first ever trip to Columbus and a 2-0 all-time record versus the Buckeyes.

2025: Senior RB Tony Tompkins was held to just 5 yards on 5 carries in the first half before exploding through the Buckeyes defense for this 80-yard touchdown run on the very first play of the second half.

Last Meeting II: Former Tulane RB Tony Tompkins had one of his signature performances, rushing for 183 yards and 3 touchdowns as then-#10 ranked Tulane defeated then-#2 ranked Ohio St. 34-24 in last year's home opener for the Wave at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. In what was the first ever meeting between the two storied programs, the Green Wave fell behind 21-17 in the third quarter before outscoring the Buckeyes 17-3 the rest of the way, improving to 2-0 on the young season.

Geezy, enjoy Ann Arbor. I still haven't been to the big house for a game despite living like 2 hours or less from it my whole life. More of a Western Michigan fan (and Michigan State until the whole athletic scandal stuff of the last two years; but that's a different topic for a different website).

It's been an agonizing two weeks for us readers, or at least for me. I'm anxious to see how this game shakes out and the contract situation shakes out, too!

Agreed, Geezy. Have a good time at the game. I’m sure it will be a cherished memory.

I’m admittedly jealous, I’d love to see a game there. So far my favorite has been at LSU, I’d love to hit all the big time programs over the years.

No bias but USC games suck, the coliseum is a dump lol

Anyway, enjoy the game and a good memory with your kid!

Hope you had an amazing time at the Big House Geezy! Good luck against Ohio State, hopefully you and your boys can finish the season strong and then coach Geezy signs a lifetime contract with Tulane!

Hope you and your son had an amazing time down at the Big House! You were just miles from where my father works (department chair at Univ. of Michigan) and an area I visit frequently. Sadly I have yet to catch a game there. It is on the bucket list.

Turning our attention to the bowl matchup, I really like your chances in this one. I think Ohio State while having a very solid squad doesn't really have any standout superstars outside of Whitmore. Play simple mistake free football. I don't think this is a game you need to get fancy in. Put them away early and end this season on a high note and give your AD something to think about in his coach contract discussions. Good luck!

Thanks, Big Mike. My son and I had an amazing time out there. What an electric atmosphere.

The wait between games has been agonizing for me as well. The wait has been similar to the real life wait between the end of season and bowl season, so that's cool, I guess, but it is also making me more and more nervous!

I've been to an LSU game, and I must say, The Big House doesn't hold a candle to the noise Tiger Stadium brings. That said, I felt like the Big House's aura and pageantry were significantly better. The place just felt a lot more "special" than Tiger Stadium.

This weekend venture has definitely created a thirst for me to see more college games in person in other parts of the country. This visit with my son though was more along the lines of an unofficial college visit for him - he's considering going to school in Ann Arbor for engineering.

Thanks man...The Big House was incredible.

This upcoming bowl game could mean everything towards this dynasty's future. I am looking at this as a must-win. I really want Geezy to remain at Tulane for several years to come. There is still so much story to be told here.

The Big House was incredible. My son had the time of his life. We flew-in on Saturday, went for a nice steak dinner at Ruths Chris before the game then went to the stadium and had a blast watching his childhood favorite team blow away the Badgers. I'm a guy that's very big on making memories for my kids, and I hope that's one he cherishes years from now when he's an adult with children of his own.

The pregame hype was the best part for me personally. Here is a short video I took, and this was really the very moment that I realized that "Man, I am in a big time, historical college football stadium" -

I feel very good about the Ohio St. matchup, however one area of concern is Ryan Whitmore and Justin Lopez's speed versus our secondary; Lopez especially tore us up last game from the slot position, hauling in 4 receptions for 163 yards and a score. I also have a great deal of respect for their defense, who despite giving up 20 points in our first matchup (7 of our points came on special teams), it felt like they did a pretty good job of keeping us in check until giving up the game in the end.

Off the field, I am a little worried about the layoff between games. Just as teams in real life have to do, we virtually had to wait almost a full month to play the bowl game, though I did get a few practice sessions in so that I am not totally cold. Hopefully Jimmy and the Green Wave offense doesn't come out rusty.

Good luck against Ohio State - I hope you're able to drop 56 on them and just blow them out of the water.
Yes it was a great moment we will both remember for the rest of our lives. He's been a HUGE fan of Michigan since he was 5 years old; we even went to the Sugar Bowl back when the Wolverines played Virginia Tech down here in New Orleans 6 seasons ago. He has had a Michigan bed comforter and posters on his wall for years, and now he's a senior in high school trying to make his college decision and they're one of a handful of schools he is looking at. He has a very impressive list he is working from - Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, Cornell, LSU (home state choice), Texas A&M, and Michigan. I'm steering him towards Stanford or Harvard, but ultimately the decision is his and he's proven to me time after time that he's capable of making sound decisions on his own; he is smarter than his old man ever was.

56 points versus Ohio St. would be very surprising given how they played against us last time. That would certainly be a great statement by the team though if it is able to send Coach Geezy into his contract negotiations fresh off the heels of a blowout win like that.

A win would give us a double-digit win season. A loss would give Coach Geezy his first 5-loss season since 2011, which would not be a good look heading to the bargaining table once the season ends.

Thank you all for your patience...Time to FINALLY get this game in today!

Congrats on your Michigan win. I've been to B1G games before (though not Michigan), and it's a great atmosphere. I actually went to U of Illinois' homecoming game and it got me back into NCAA 14 again haha. Hope you enjoyed!

Game 14, Year 17 (2026 season): #21 Tulane Green Wave vs. #20 Ohio St. Buckeyes

                    #21 31 -- 10-4
                    #20 19 -- 09-4

Following QB Jimmy McBride's first quarter touchdown run that gave the Green Wave a 14-3 first quarter lead, McBride and WR Grant Brady's pre-planned dance celebration was not penalized.

In a game in which many considered a must-win for head coach D. Geezy, #21 Tulane dominates #20 Ohio St. in 31-19 Capital One Bowl romp | QB McBride finishes 19 of 25 for 219 yards and two total touchdowns as Green Wave defeats Buckeyes for the second time this season | Junior WR Lawson also has a strong performance, ends the day with 104 receiving yards and a touchdown in what could have been his final collegiate game | Team now heads into what should be an interesting off-season, with Geezy's contract talks reportedly set to heat up over the next week

Orlando, FL -- For the third time within the past 15 months, Tulane and Ohio St. met on the football field having never met before prior to that. And for the third time within the past 15 months, the Green Wave ended up victorious over the Buckeyes, as the SEC runner-ups came away with a 31-19 Capital One Bowl victory in Orlando in a game that was never really in doubt. Wave CB J.T. Hills' interception on the very first play from scrimmage led to a 21-yard touchdown pass from QB Jimmy McBride to WR Adam Lawson, and the #21 ranked Green Wave never looked back.

McBride finishes the year with a nation leading and school record 183.6 quarterback rating, making him the first ever Green Wave player under Geezy to win that stat category and the first for Tulane since former QB Shaun King finished with a then-NCAA record 183.3 rating in 1998.

Later, after allowing an Ohio St. field goal that cut the lead to 7-3, McBride's 18-yard touchdown run increased Tulane's advantage to 14-3. Then, after surrendering another field goal by Buckeyes PK Lee Dawson, this one from 52 yards away, Wave true freshman RB Teddy Jenkins' 1-yard touchdown pushed the lead to 21-6. McBride finished the game 19 of 25 for 219 yards and a touchdown, while Jenkins finished with 8 carries for 60 yards.

McBride's steady performance was enough to earn him Player of the Game honors. The former 4-star recruit out of North Carolina finishes the year with 4,108 passing yards to go along with 42 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions, earning him a quarterback rating of 183.6, the #1 quarterback rating in the nation.

"Jimmy has become such a technician. I could not be more pumped up about his growth," said Tulane offense coordinator Joe Roberts of the 5-11 redshirt junior. "He has been a pleasure to coach and selfishly, I hope he returns for another season. This was one of the best single-season quarterback performances in the history of this program."

The game would be all but put away in the third quarter when the Green Wave took the first possession of the second half on an 11-play 77-yard march that lasted 3:13 and culminated with a 1-yard touchdown run by junior FB J.J. Williams that made the score 31-6.

The Buckeyes (9-4) did not go away easily and attempted to work themselves back into the game, however two second half touchdown passes by QB Chad Dawson would not be enough. Ohio St.'s late rally would be thwarted when WR Justin Lopez got tackled a yard short of a first down by Wave freshman CB Kurt Blalock on 4th and 4 with less than two minutes to go, turning the ball over at the Green Wave 28-yard line and enabling the Wave to run out the clock to preserve their 12-point win.

Likely playing in his final collegiate game, 6-6 WR Adam Lawson finished the game with 6 receptions for 104 yards and a touchdown. The former Louisiana 4-star recruit will have a big decision to make in the coming days on whether to stay in school or turn pro.
"We really clicked on all cylinders today and early on, the way we matched their field goals with touchdowns really allowed us to build a solid lead from the get-go," said Tulane head coach D. Geezy.

The win for Tulane is its third Capital One Bowl win in the last four seasons and provides momentum heading into a crucial off-season for the program. Aside from McBride's decision on whether to turn pro or come back for his senior season, 6-6 WR Adam Lawson also faces a similar decision. Lawson, a former 4-star recruit and Louisiana native, finished the game with 104 receiving yards and a touchdown, giving him 1,530 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns on the season; he too will have to make a decision on whether to come back for his senior season or take his talents to the next level.

But perhaps more important than both of those two player decisions will be the impending contract discussions set to commence between the school and Geezy, whose contract expired at the conclusion of the game. Geezy, who just completed his 17th year at the school, is reportedly demanding to be paid in the vicinity of $15 million per year, which would represent a 300% annual increase from his last contract signed 10 years ago.

"I'm not going to spend a lot of time talking about the contract because we just beat a heck of a team and this press conference is about the game and our players," said Geezy, who would go on to answer every question regarding his contract status with "next question."

"I have said since contract talks went on pause before the year that I want to coach at Tulane forever. I will let my agent do what he does and hopefully this thing can get worked out and we can move on and start working on winning more championships. We have a hell of a team returning next season and I plan to be a part of it."

McBride and his Green Wave teammates celebrate following their program's third Capital One Bowl victory in the past four seasons.

Tulane WR Adam Lawson prepares to run on the field for what could be his final appearance in a Tulane uniform.

WR Ryan Whitmore and the Buckeyes ran out of the tunnel with revenge on their minds after losing to Tulane 27-24 at Columbus back in week 1.

The United States Air Force performed a flyover prior to Friday's New Year's Day bowl bash.

Junior CB J.T. Hills' interception in front of Whitmore on the game's very first registered play from scrimmage set the tone early for the Green Wave.

Lawson and WR Grant Brady celebrate following Lawson's early 21-yard touchdown grab that gave the Green Wave a lightning-quick 7-0 lead.

SS Jo Jo Price used every inch of his 6-7 height to swat away QB Chad Dawson's pass at the line of scrimmage on third down, forcing the Buckeyes to settle for an early field goal.

Green Wave fans were hyped up after McBride's 18-yard touchdown scramble gave their team a 13-3 first quarter lead.

Like so many other teams have, Ohio St.'s defense had trouble stopping RB Michael Brown Jr. on passes out of the backfield, as the junior finished with 6 receptions for 58 yards.

RB Roy Graham was a load to bring down all game long as the Buckeye senior finished with 155 rushing yards on only 17 carries, however Green Wave senior DE T.J. Pearson, a former blue chip recruit playing in his final collegiate game, got the best of him here on a tackle for a loss.

True freshman RB Teddy Jenkins was a spark-plug for the Green Wave offense, finishing with 8 carries for 60 yards, including this 1-yard touchdown run that made the score 21-6 in the second quarter.

Playing in his final collegiate game, FS Terrell Faulk, a former 4-star recruit, comes away with a tackle for a loss on Ohio St. RB Beau Goodwin.

Junior FB J.J. Williams salutes the man above after he trucked through the Ohio St. defense for a 1-yard touchdown run that gave his team a commanding 31-6 second half lead.

Brutus Buckeye knew the game was pretty much out of reach following Williams' back-breaking fourth quarter score.

CB J.T. Hills held Ohio St. star WR Ryan Whitmore in check most of the game, however the senior speedster got the best of him on this one-handed 4-yard touchdown grab that cut the deficit to 31-19 with under five minutes remaining.

True freshman CB Kurt Blalock's sound tackle on 4th and 4 stopped Buckeyes WR Justin Lopez one yard shy of a first down, turning the ball back over to the Wave and allowing them to run out the rest of the clock.

Redshirt junior QB Jimmy McBride has emerged as one of the most efficient passers in college football and his steady performance earned him Player of the Game honors.

                        Editor's Note:

Alright fellas...so at this stage, I have not yet simulated past the National Championship Game, meaning I have no idea what Coach Geezy's contract fate will be. Needless to say, I am on pins and needles, but I am also ready to accept whatever fate the gaming gods hand down to me.

Once I sim past the title game tonight, I will post the bowl game results and traditional end of season items in the morning, and then spend a few days writing the article on what ends up happening to Coach Geezy.

                        Stay tuned!

Nice job stomping OSU. Helluva job by McBride to finish the season with a 4:1 TD:Int ratio.

Excited to see the end of the season wrap up

I went back and looked through all of my seasons, and McBride's 4.2 to 1 TD to INT ratio is the best ever for any quarterback I have had. Not throwing interceptions was a major point of emphasis for me this season and it obviously worked out very well. Big improvement from last year's 25 TD 17 INT performance by McBride.

McBride ended the season with some solid numbers - 4 to 1 TD to INT is extremely solid. I wonder if he sticks around for his senior season? That decision could be dependent on Coach Geezy staying at Tulane.

One of the most interesting offseasons is before us - I can't wait to read about it. Keep up the amazing work my friend.
I could not be happier about my QB play. If Jimmy comes back for his senior season, he could go down as the best Wave QB of all-time statistically, including the great Jamie Manning (2016-2018). McBride's newly found ability to throw on the run has been a game-changer for us offensively. I feel like I am playing with a mash-up of Russell Wilson, Drew Brees, and Aaron Rodgers when using this guy.

I appreciate the kind words old friend....This will be a very entertaining off-season!
