Some say this isn't a problem, but every time I play with the current tuner, it's a slash/hook fest.
I think different slider sets can get you different results, but my choice was to use the 1.01 tuner. The penalties are in the normal range and there's a good variety. I make no slider adjustments and I have great games. I use the Full Sim style, though (you didn't say what style you were playing on).
